Super causal but also very engaging!
This game has autosaves/1 save slot only and at no point does it warn you that some of the content will be missable if you reach a certain point in the main quest. Because of this I will not be able to fully complete the game, and I'm not slogging another 6 hours to try to complete the quest again. This game should have a manual save feature and it's baffling not to have one in current year.
In addition the middle portion of the game is a slog having to build and supply up your ship, it took like an hour and after that point I wasn't having fun anymore, kinda killing the pacing and my interest, ending itself was alright but the second half of the islands feel a little lackluster.

The best game in the series, lots of hidden objects, a fine story and the different gameplay elements seem to fit together best here. Very cute and relaxing, perfect casual game for surprisingly many hours.

How did I end up finding and playing this nice chillout game?
I was looking for something to play with my son.
This seemed to be a nice adventure game, where you explore various locations, listen to people and their troubles, complete simple quests, go into a dungeon or two and eventually become a hero and save a kingdom. It seemed like playing a fairytale for kids.
And it delivers exactly that.
I think it is a nice game for kids and will write about it as such. You never see your avatar, you are instead looking on the map and clicking on things that can be interacted with. That invokes a unique action based on the type of object. You get a text describing a situation, conversation… Art style tries to imitate drawing from a fairytale book. The map really looks like a rendered drawing on a parchment. Color palette favors bright tones, but caves and dungeons are exactly as they should be. Locations are various, filled with details to spot and click upon, collecting mushrooms, eggs…, spotting half covered crates, chests, pearls near the shore. Kids will get their exploration dopamin. Will care about country people, will help them with little troubles and will get renown and access to more troubling quests. Some involve fighting. But that is done in a very sensitive way. On the map, among other things, there's only a moving drawing of the creature and when engaged, your weapon's image will appear on top of the creature and will strike it 3 times. Dust will appear after each blow, the creature will make a sound and disappear from the map. No blood. The only thing my boy was sad about was hunting animals. Again there is a picture of an animal on map, when engaged arrows start to appear pointed to the animal with a woosh sound. Again they make a sound, disappear, no blood.
You learn various talents. Everything has some form of achievement. Kids love those things, they feel rewarded for their effort and it works here well.
Story is about pirates, but it has nothing cruel and not appropriate for kids inside. Also there's a good twist at the end. Bad deeds will be punished, good intentions rewarded.
As the developers were doing more of these games, later titles became more user friendly. I remember that in the first game HotK1 you could spend a resource you would need for later quest, but here is nothing of that sort. You are free to use common resources as required by your play style.
Nice point and click adv. Works great on steamdeck.
Point and click a lot, still good with some upgrade from the first one. A bit challenging yet fun game. And again a good monitor is a must.
If you played Hero of the Kingdom I then this is more of the same, with a better story. The quest line is longer, with a lot of sidequests, some which appear in an area you'd already visited once you've hit other checkpoints. If I had one criticism, it would be there are some points when you feel you are being wrung out for every single gold coin on your person.
