About the Game

You are born falling from orbit, a new mind in a body once occupied by the Changing God, a being who has cheated death for millennia. If you survive, your journey through the Ninth World will only get stranger… and deadlier.

With a host of strange companions – whose motives and goals may help or harm you – you must escape an ancient, unstoppable creature called the Sorrow and answer the question that defines your existence: What does one life matter?

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the thematic successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved role-playing games of all time. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric, narrative-driven role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Numenera universe, and brought to you by the creative team behind Planescape: Torment and the award-winning Wasteland 2.

Features:
  • A Deep, Thematically Satisfying Story. The philosophical underpinnings of Torment drive the game, both mechanically and narratively. Your words, choices, and actions are your primary weapons.
  • A World Unlike Any Other. Journey across the Ninth World, a fantastic, original setting, with awe-inspiring visuals, offbeat and unpredictable items to use in and out of battle, and stunning feats of magic. Powered by technology used in the award-winning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment, the Numenera setting by Monte Cook provides endless wonders and impossibly imaginative locations for you to explore.
  • A Rich, Personal Narrative. Thoughtful and character-driven, the story is epic in feel but deeply personal in substance, with nontraditional characters and companions whose motivations and desires shape their actions throughout the game.
  • Reactivity, Replayability, and the Tides. Your choices matter, and morality in the Ninth World is not a simple matter of “right” and “wrong”. You will decide the fates of those around you, and characters will react to your decisions and reputation. The result is a deeply replayable experience that arises naturally from your actions throughout the game.
  • A New Take on Combat. With the Crisis system, combat is more than just bashing your enemies. Plan your way through hand-crafted set-pieces which combine battles with environmental puzzles, social interaction, stealth, and more.

Short version: If you're a hardcore CRPG fan and have played all of the most well known games in the genre then yeah, give this a go. Otherwise, don't bother.

Long Version: Where to even start. Firstly, it's only Torment in title. Compared to PST, it's less polished, worse combat, worse dialogue, worse lore, worse story, worse companions, more bugs and has zero connection to PST. In fact, I'd say the same things when compared to any modern CRPG such as DOS, POE, Tryanny, BG3 etc etc. That's not to say this is a bad game, but it's not great either.

While I can't prove it, there's this overwhelmingly feeling I get that this has a lot of cut content from it. Some characters just have too much dialogue for no reason. This would be ok if the world was interesting but it just isn't. From my understanding, the devs based this version of Torment on an upcoming TRPG called Numenera that was being Kickstarted at the same time, most likely for budget reasons. For lack of a better term, Numenera just feels like it's 'trying too hard' and doesn't even come close to the genuine bizarre yet interesting feel that is found in Sigil.

There is way too much descriptive text that eventually I just started to skip it. The Merecaster system initially comes across as interesting and different but ends up just being annoying as it's just a mini choose your own adventure novel often having to get 'good endings' down to luck or repeated save scumming. You can basically just talk your way through the entire game or resort to combat. The combat is passable but very easy and minimal. If you're not interested in combat then you can just persuade speech check (or some other skill check option) your way through basically everything. However, it never feels interesting when you do this. When you have the option to use persuasion on almost every NPC you talk to it starts to not feel like an accomplishment.

As mentioned above the game lacks polish. A lot of quests are buggy and often people would be unresponsive when you try to talk to them, resulting in multiple attempts to start dialogue. If loot drops but someone is standing in front of you, you can forget about that loot. There's even a bug where if you talk too much in a single dialogue box, the game slows to a halt. Often I'd have to choose half of the dialogue options, exit conversation, then start talking to them again to avoid this. This is very frustrating in such a dialogue heavy game. I can only assume that due to low sales, the devs stopped providing patches.

Honestly, the ending just felt like a padded out slog and I was glad to be done with it. However, I love this genre and I still somewhat enjoyed this game. It's still an ok CRPG and in such a niche genre I welcome it. I really wonder if the devs were happy with the final product of this game. I'd give it a 6/10 if you're a fan of the genre. Otherwise you'll probably hate it.

It's excellent fantasy/sci-fi Visual Novel, thick one, like 500 pages book.
Interesting, though provoking, funny sometimes. Beautiful art.
Puzzles and dialog are good too.
As an RPG, it has unusual, creative inventory and character properties.
Technically RPG it's not really up to date, especially battle system.
I mean there is no any inventory sorting, slow and sometimes buggy battles and quests.
But overall it's definitely good and recommended, if you like stories and reading!

Masterpiece. A mysterious world, deep characters, and every pixel is interesting, giving you that rare feeling of a classic, high-quality game.

I thank you for it. I hope a game like this will be made one more time.

Its storytelling and world depth is very high. There is a lot of detail and the quests and characters are very engaging. I feel like the dialogue is worth the game and the world is very diverse with lots of interesting elements everywhere. The 2 companions I have met so far have backstories that make you want to know more and the areas and citizens are diverse. If you don't like a large amount of dialogue then you won't enjoy the game but the game is worth the dialogue as you end up immersed in the dialogue and storyline.

The lore and world of Numenera are compelling and interesting, but it’s unfortunate that they’re trapped in one of the most bafflingly boring games I’ve ever played. Having to read what feels like a novel every time I interact with a character only hinders the experience. I’d love to see another take on this world, with better dialogue (ideally voice-acted) and more engaging gameplay

If you will play this one, and I'd advise not to, play as Nano (mage).
Anything else, and you'll likely be cut from tons of content early on due to skills checks all being heavily designed for intellect character.

Seriously though, why are there 3 quests, that are all impossible to be completed peacefully if 1 (single, one!) skill check is failed? That's just horrid design.

Bit of positives though, world building seems incredible. Lore around stuff is amazing, well written and interesting, really drawing a person in if you spend enough time reading.

On subject of reading though, not every single NPC, no matter how irrelevant, needs a book written about them. The amount of unnecessary exposition is excruciating.
There is a small bar early in the game, 6-7 characters inside.

I've spent about 2 hours talking to them, going through dialogue options.
Was it needed? No. Was it interesting? Some of it. Was it fun? Hell no.
Some of dialogue was great, some was highschoolers first book, first draft quality.

Cardinal sin though, the game is boring.
Enter area, talk to 20 characters, each with 10 book chapters of dialogue, get a quest or two.
Move to next region, repeat above.

At the time of dropping this game, I have about 15 quests in my quest log, with grand total of 3 completed.
Not that I don't want to complete them, it's just none of them are in my area. All require travelling to another region, where I'll spend another hour or so reading new NPC characters dialogue and get more quests.

On topic of quests...oh boy...

And that's it.
A game with insanely good world building with mediocre writing, horrible quest design, lack of alternative options to solving quests (peaceful or agressive. Peaceful is skill role based, so have fun with intellect checks if you're not nano, and even more fun with HORRENDOUS combat) and too much reading.

For a game that bears the name Torment, this one lacks everything that made Planescape fun.

Didn't expect anything in particular.

Amazing game, very fun and has great replay value. Such a good game, left wanting more so it feels a little short but it has so much you can miss that multiple playthroughs make it absolutely worth the price!

This is a Gloriously beautiful game! The mechanics are very cool, unique items and a very cool and interesting story line and potential NPCs. All in all i completely agree this is a spiritual successor to the original.
