Описание

Vector 36 is Physics-Based Racer set on the terraformed surface of Mars. You pilot a Skimmer, a completely customizable, surface skimming vehicle. With total control over every component, you are responsible for how your Skimmer performs. Piloting skill and engineering make the difference between winning and losing.

Race other pilots through various tracks on Mars. Compete in Sprint, Circuit, or Tournament modes to win credits, parts, or new Skimmers. Race your friends through Vector 36's amazing ghost replay system. Take on the world with Global Leaderboards. Push your machine to the limits until you are the fastest settler on Mars.

Each part of your Skimmer is bound by the laws of physics. Moving internal components will shift the center of gravity, adjusting angles to thrusters will affect its flight characteristics.

Fine tuning is the difference between winning and losing. Choose from a wide selection of parts, accessories, passive weapons, or support gear to adjust your Skimmer to its task. Whether it's a quick sprint at full boost, an endurance race with hardened parts, or a hill climb where lift is more important than thrust; evolve or get left behind.

Witness new skimmers, tracks, obstacles, support bots, parts, weapons, opponents and game modes. Vector36 will be growing over time.

No VR? No problem. Vector 36 still plays seamlessly on your PC Monitor.

Awesome game.. bit of a shame that there is only a small following. Not seen anything like it. Could have some improvement in control mappings but nothing major. Have to say im a bit addicted to it. From the workshop to the racetrack. Great concept, great idea, great physics, great execution. Love it!

This game is clunky, unintuitive, frustrating, and unfair. It is also one of the best racers I've ever played, and definitely the best in the anti-gravity racing genre.

When I say "anti-gravity racing", it's possible that you might think of games like wipeout, redout, pacer, f-zero, ballisticNG and the like. This is a pretty unfair comparison... for those other games. You see, while most of these racing games are just essentially faster, driftier variations of car racers with maybe some pitch control gimmick, Vector 36 goes all the way in the opposite direction, going for a simmy, incredibly complex experience more akin to very low flying spacecraft. Forget about crazy loop-de-looping flat tracks, you are now ripping ass through the uneven, craggy Martian circuits these hovercraft were designed for. There are no split-second, twitchy turns or shield management, instead you will be maneuvering your incredibly fast low-altitude missile through tracks via momentum, strategy, systems management, and physics. In a sense, this is the rallycross of its genre, if rally cars were able to fly at 500+ kmh.

It's not only the fact that you can basically trim your power to lift ratio on the go, or that you will need to make full use of rudder, roll and pitch to keep your craft precariously skimming past outcrops and obstacles, but you can also purchase, swap, install and fine tune the placement and orientation of all the components in your ship, which in turn will also affect its behavior, center of mass, thrust pitch and performance. As you climb the ranks you are perfectly able to simply race on the stock configurations of your ships, but if you really want to get your hands dirty, prepare to spend hours upon hours just fine tuning your components on your garage and test runs to push your designs to their limit. Not only does V36 manage to offer a very unique experience, its complexity and granularity would already stand out even if the rest of the games in the space managed to come close to it.

With that complexity, however, comes a good deal of frustration. The game has a pretty in-depth tutorial that tries its damn best to get you used to all aspects of controlling and building your craft, and the player is given a reasonable amount of tools to gauge how their design will run, however, it will be up to the player to learn and understand the whats and whys of everything that goes into a vehicle. This means that, if you really want to become proficient at the game, you will need to spend more time than one would prefer ever so slightly tweaking a value, and doing a test run to see these changes in action. It's not like DIRT, where you are told in more or less certain terms what increasing your wheel camber will do, moving a repulsor slightly backward and outside, for example, will not only affect the lateral control of your ship but also the lift on that section, which also can alter your pitch, which can also alter its center of thrust, and this butterfly effect can end up in very frustrating moments where you're trying to improve your design, but end up making it worse. It's simply very hard to gauge total performance in the garage, and the process doesn't usually matter too much because, outside of category restrictions, buying a new craft tends to just be a net positive anyway. But when you pull off a modification and it works, it really feels awesome.

The amount of content in the game is alright. There are quite a few circuits to be run under different conditions, featuring jumps, craggy technical sections, tight caves and wide open desert runs, spanning over several formats of tournament which will reward money to be used to purchase new parts and ships. I don't have much complaint in regards to the variety offered, but I would be remiss to not kinda wish for more intermediate parts and vehicles to mess around with. For all the mind boggling variety of construction that the game allows, the 5 stock skimmers feel a bit bland and tinkering with a design, as I pointed out, tends to be more of a frustrating waste of time than it should, so it feels like a lot of its mechanical depth is locked behind this often obtuse facet. There are some custom skimmers available for purchase on the shop, but it would have been dope if you could win or buy templates from your rivals, or get them from other players in the workshop.

Vector 36 also has VR support. And honestly, it feels incredible. When it works. The sense of speed and scale is really well done and I'll be honest, I kinda can't go back to pancake mode now having tried it in VR. But the game can get super stuttery when even relatively small amounts of models are on screen, terrain does tear quite a bit on your peripheral vision, and it's generally just not pleasing to play. I stopped my last session over 2 hours ago, and my eyes still kinda hurt since, not to mention the queasiness. I have played a good bunch of VR games, so something's definitely wrong here. In addition to that, and while it makes a valiant effort to integrate VR controllers into experience, the motion controls are really uncomfortable and imprecise to use, although fortunately, you can just disable them and use either a joystick or a controller to play.

EDIT: Having played it a couple more sessions, I would say you can actually play it for a good deal of time in one sitting, but you will probably need a day or two to get used to it.

VR aside however, the game does also have some weird technical quirks, like locking into a sound output and simply not playing any music or sounds when selecting a different one on windows, its lack of video options beyond a few simple selectors for resolution and general video effects. and its graphical performance isn't exactly great, even in pancake mode. The sense of speed is great and everything is really well modeled and thought out, although even for 2018 standards, the textures and effects already felt kind of cheap, but this is the small price to pay for the niche, complex and uncompromising uniqueness of small team indie developers that would otherwise not be possible when considering the "safer" alternatives released prior or since. I was surprised to see that the developers have kept support up with updates dating as recently as 2023, which is an incredible amount of commitment and dedication that must be mentioned.

The racing itself is really fun, and the AI will sometimes derp out, but you'll see opponents crash, lose components (oh yeah, there's an in-depth individual component damage system, did I mention that?) and nursing their damaged skimmers to pit for repairs and refuel. Likewise, if you mess up, you might need to hang in there with a repair, or even retire for that race and hope to do better down the championship.

Also the music slaps and the menu theme will live rent free in your head.

Overall, it really is a shame that V36 did not make the splash it should have among its target demographic, because it really is a truly groundbreaking videogame, with very solid fundamentals and a mind boggling amount of complexity and nuance, despite sometimes failing to fully accomodate the player into its more advanced features. It is also a shame that its VR mode is physically unpleasant to play for more than a race or two, as even today there is nothing else like it on the genre and with just a little more outreach I am sure would have managed to grow one of those cult followings that persist through the ages. All in all, it is a bit of a diamond in the rough, and a definitely unique racing game that deserves to be experienced.

8/10.
