yes it is janky yes it is 90s as heck but I still had fun playing it
.
I would really, REALLY like to recommend this adventure SO BAD, with its cartoony charm, its bizarre, ridiculous and acid British humor, it's memorable characters and situations, its crazy puzzle solutions... but I just can't. This game, sadly, has lots and some of the worst vices of design from the era, making it a frustrating mess in the end. Not only there are LOTS of cheap deaths (although funny to watch, I must say), but the save system is HIDEOUS and you'll have to repeat large chunks of gameplay over and over again. If you manage to understand how to have infinite saves and have LOTS of patience, maybe you'll enjoy this bizarre and funny blast from the 90s, but if not, if you are not willing to get in the correct mindset, don't get even close to this game.
I haven't finished the game yet, but I've played enough that I feel I can say that most of the negative reviews are unwarranted.
First, complaints about how well it runs or the fact that it runs in DOSBox. Anyone that plays older games will recognize that many of them have to run in DOSBox due to changes in OS. This isn't anything unusual, and really shouldn't be treated like it is. I've been playing it on Windows 10, and aside from minor graphics glitches during transition screens, it's been fine.
Second is complaints about the story or humor. Since I haven't finished, I can't comment on the story to any great depth, but it's been pretty good so far. While being humorous, and a little bit of a spoof, the story is easy enough to follow, and the humor is typical British humor for the time.
That said, there's a little bit of learning curve, and you really need to read the manual to have any clue how to do anything. The limited saves is fairly novel for a game of this type, but annoying when there's so many unexpected ways to die.
Overall, I'm enjoying the game, and I plan to finish it. If anything major shows up, I'll mention it.
It's called The Quivering because you'll be a quivering mess after you're done playing it
it's like undertale but with more zombies
11/10
I didn't like that you have to kill the little demons to save the game because they are cute <:( but I liked the sheep book so I give
5/10
this game is horrific. the swamp maze makes me want to die, and the imp save system is beyond frustrating. i think about it every night as i go to sleep and every morning as i wake up. big d resides in my subconscious forever now.
10/10 must play
A great comedic point&click game
One of the kind point and click adventure game. A true weird masterpiece.
Thought a game from the end of the last contury would run smooth an current hardware. However, this is not a remake and not even an adjusted version but simly the original binaries that run inside a DOSBox x86 emulator so don't expect it to run smooth on a Windows Tablet. It does not even run smooth on my i5-4440.
There is no text output and for a non-english player it's somethimes hard to follow the dialoge.
Since I've played only about half an hour I cannot recomment the game nor can i give you any advice to not try it. Maybe you like it more than i did.
Franken-Elvis at a Netherworld Funpark: Brilliant Game a true Oldschool Masterpiece. Love the Dark Humour and the UK voice acting. The save system involving Imps that are also needed object puzzles gives the first chapter a survival horror feel that does not exist in most point and click adventure games. Very much reminiscent of the original Discworld, Discworld: Noir and Zack McKracken, and yet a style unto itself. This game is wholey underated on Steam and steal for $4. As one of the most challenging and enjoyable games Ive played recently, I heartily recomend this game to any serious fans of the genre.
I honestly could not believe it when I randomly searched this classic game from my childhood today and it popped up as being able to be downloaded on Steam. This game is and always has been an absolute gem. Undoubtedly the games strength lies in the voice acting and sense of humor and irony and it's very well done and genuinely hilarious. There's an underlying British-type 'An American Werewolf in London' style of humor that everyone might not appreciate, but I honestly haven't found a game since that has made me laugh so much (The phantom of the opera is my favorite character). The story is a good length split across two parts and there's some very scary moments (The Fun House still haunts me to this day and I'm 21). It's PACKED full of references to classic horror films and the game-play is a point-and-click style typical of games of this age, and the graphics are too, don't expect a graphical phenomenon; saying that the cut-scenes (And there's a lot of them) still look pretty good. Lots of puzzles too, usually involving using items in conjunction with one another.
I had the pleasure of talking to one of the developers on the game a few years back and they had such a tiny development team and audience it's incredible that it's up here. Thanks developers, thanks Steam!
