Look i get what they were trying to do and actually i like that kind of stuff, when its done right...
When you are going to use "lies" in stories you have to make it so it will matter, when you use it too much or use it wrong you cant tell what is truth or what is lie, when that happens you wont care about it anymore.
All that build up all that character development just to waste in the last chapter.
They could make it so it still matters but no it did not matter lol. Some people like the ending i get it in concept its actually a good plot but like i said it makes us feel like it all did not matter, danganronpa 1-2, ultra despair girls, danganronpa 3 anime, these all have connected plots that we followed through this journey and it makes sense all together. They either changed this games story or they did not planned this "story" from the start. And thanks to that all the things i played and watched feels like it did not matter at all.
If this was a different game and not connected to the danganronpa at all i would have enjoyed the ending 10x more, it really is a shame.
Game itself is good, first and the fifth cases (especially first one) my favorites in all games they were really good. Thats why im angry this game could be the best in the series...

it took like 2 and a half month for me to finished this game. compared to 1 and 2 this is the longest. it's not good and it's not bad. it's just the way it's supposed to end.

a truly piece of art this is. i'm so grateful for the game for bringing all these morals and the topic of point of view. most people are negative about the ending, but the ending is what really made the game so great. thank you for the game, thank you for it all.

I love all of the Danganronpa games and this one is no exception. Story and plot is amazing, however, the mechanics are not so much. Despite this specific version being marketed as a PC game, all of the controls seem to built for a game controller? It's extremely hard to use especially during trials where you have to click buttons and move your mouse to initiate certain functions to progress the trials. It constantly gives you hints on how to navigate the game but the controls on the keyboard and the directions on the screen do NOT match up! This game is amazing but do NOT get it on a PC, rather only if you are able to use a controller for it. Otherwise you will spend half of the game searching up which controls will align with what keys and it will make your experience kinda bad.

Peak cinema!! No matter how many years since release this is still an amazing game with such a deep storyline. Although your favorite characters *may* get killed, it's still a great game.

Might be one of the worst, if not the worst ending to a game ever concocted into existence, why did the creator go out of his way to create such an amazing game with 10/10 soundtracks and graphics, characters (except Himiko), etc, just to take a huge shit on it at the end? Is he st*pid? Makes no sense.
          lame .

A detective game where you solve mysteries and reveal the truth. Except you get 3 of the 5 culprits and the mastermind spoiled by the TRADING CARDS.

          endings sucks too

It's REALLY bad for a mystery game since the majority of the characters are very stupid. I was fustrated for most of this game. This game definitely appeals more to Anime fans than mystery ones. Also, the "open ending" was beyond terrible, if Ace Attorney (actual good mystery game, go play it) ended like that I'd be hella pissed.

Definitely coming in late to the party on the review and opinion. But when I saw one of my Steam friends giving this a negative review for its ending, I honestly thought it would be the same plot twist as the other games. But when it came to it, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, and frankly, I am glad that it ends like this. With the existence of Danganronpa S as an added insult to that ending, it honestly could not really get better than this.
Thank you for all the experiences, stories, and emotions you've given me, Team Danganronpa, and farewell.

          V3 is a controversial game.

Billed as the end of the series (as we know it), V3 caps off the Danganronpa game series with a meta-textual, cerebral, and uneven finish.

Would I recommend this game? If you played Danganronpa 1 & 2, then yes. But know you won't be sastified.
Otherwise, no, I wouldn't recommend it.

          Deeper spoiler thoughts:
The Danganronpa story from the original games really ends in the Danganronpa 3 anime. Yes, that's correct, the story arc of Hope's Peak isn't in V3. It's the anime. Which is very worth watching.

So what's V3 actually about? Well, it's actually about the fans. For those that don't know, and I'm positive there are a ton of people that don't, Danganronpa originally gained popularity in online forums like Something Awful. Danganronpa 1 was released in Japan in 2010, but it took until 2014 for it to get a Western release and translation. In those four years, fans on Something Awful and Tumblr took to translating the game themselves and showcasing it in Let's Play forums and blogs.

This created a culture where the Western fans developed entirely independently of the creator's intent. Characters meant to be loved become hated in the West, and hated characters became loved. Fans even took to making their own original characters and trails, and then modding them into unofficial translations. The series was Flanderized in front of the creator in real time.

V3 is about that cultural dichotomy. The big ending twist is that V3 is actually the 53rd iteration of the series where the game is no longer maintained by people, but by fans and corporate interest. Danganronpa is no longer a story about high schoolers finding hope in despair, but a multimedia franchise anchored by a game show. The twist villain turns out to be the Ultimate Cosplayer cosplaying as Junko-- a fan since she was a child that's now running a game show that tortures people. She's backed by an unseen company who makes insane profits from the Danganronpa franchise. In fact, all the participants are fans who have brainwashed themselves into being unwitting contestants.

The shock-and-horror of the first game is long-dead. Junko and Naegi are dead. All that remains is the game. And now viewers are so delighted by the carnage that they willingly participate in it themselves. The villain is only defeated when the fans demand an end to it... by no longer watching or playing.

This is the creator calling out his fans and himself. But its told in a messy way. Most of the cases/trails in V3 are pretty bad, involving hidden floorboards in spike cages and ziplines across shark-infested tanks. You could argue this is over-the-top satire. I'd argue that it's still an uninteresting slog. The game is strongest in its first and fifth case. The first case is oddly touching, with you, the player, being the murdered victim, and you see how your absence affects the other characters. The fifth trail is a mind-bending case where you have a rotating cast of body-doubles while trying to investigate a character who constantly lies.

But the main point is that final trail, where you find out all the carnage you've seen (this game is especially violent compared to the rest of the series) is all in service of a game show. The creator, by revealing everyone in the game is a fan that has destroyed themselves for this game, is asking you, the player, to empathize with them-- to detach yourself from the fiction and examine why you find this series entertaining. He's asking us to see the characters as more than characters, but as people that had lives that were cut short.

The real case, the real trail, is on you: the player.

That's really why this game is controversial. V3 sidesteps the story that's been told from Danganronpa 1 to instead deliver a metatextual analysis of itself and its fanbase. It's a very interesting case, but it's told in an extremely clunky way.

Honestly out of all Danganronpa games I think trials were the best in this one. Overall it's a great game, Killings, mysteries, trials, characters were all top notch and I really had a great time with this game, it's been a while since I was this invested in a game. Ending on the other hand was mixed to me, I can see why so many people hate on it but at the same thing I don't think it's that bad, it's just that it could've been done much more better. I definitely recommend this game to everyone, trials and plot is really interesting and captivating, you will definitely get invested in it like I did

This is incredibly fun and a lot simpler for those that are not too great this type of game, me being that person heavily. The executions, murders, trials, story, beginning specifically. I loved it all, BUT the issue of the keyboard and mouse presses not being detected has made me damn near lose my mind. It's been anywhere between 2-14 clicks before it finally goes to the next message, especially annoying during class trials when it refuses to fire, or more so in the final argue where none of the WASD keys did not register for a whole 20 seconds. I looked up the issue and it seems to be a known issue with other people. By all means I highly suggest this game and absolutely love it, but just be very aware of the lack of keyboard and mouse optimization. If I didn't love the series as much as I do, this would very easily be a game killer for me.

          Completed, 8/10

          Pros:
          - A return to the gameplay of previous Danganronpa games, which was great after playing Despair Girls.
          - A very good early twist that I didn't see coming.
          - I very rarely had to pull up a guide to figure something out. The cases were a lot more similar to Trigger Happy Havoc in terms of difficulty than Goodbye Despair.
          - A lot of new, interesting ultimate abilities.
          - Danganronpa finally got its teeth back and is willing to actually kill likable characters, which is good to see after watching the Danganronpa 3 anime, where they retconned like half of Ultra Despair Girls.
          - Absolutely insane ending. I had a few theories as to what was really happening, and none of them were correct.
          - I very much preferred the new trial minigames introduced here to the ones in Goodbye Despair.

          Cons:
          - There's some characters that I genuinely dislike. Not in a "meh" way, but a "wow, I wish they'd just die already" way.
          - The slot machine seems to be all but guaranteed to give you profit in the long run, making the only limiting factor to the casino purchases how long you're willing to let your game run while having your controller/Steam Input spam Y. Just needlessly tedious.
          - Maybe this was my fault, but I was unable to max out anywhere close to the amount of bonds that I was in Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair.
          - Very few cases that spanned more than a few rooms. This is a pretty significant downgrade when compared to cases in earlier games, especially since the map is so much larger here both early and late game.
          - The MonoMono Machine is still very tedious to use. I wish there was an option to quickly do a bunch of spins with a set number of Monocoins instead of having to do each spin individually.
          - The Monokubs were an interesting set of characters, but I don't like how they made Monokuma seem weak due to not being able to pilot the Exisals. In Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, he was an almost omnipotent character who was not to be trifled with. In V3 he's the guy that runs the class trials and occasionally tells jokes or gives hints.
          - There's a few minor translation issues where a wrong word is used. Not a dealbreaker, but it does make the English translation feel a bit cheaper.
          - I really don't like Monokuma's new English voice.

All in all, while I still think I prefer Trigger Happy Havoc, V3 Killing Harmony is a close second that I feel wraps up the Danganronpa franchise nicely (though I wouldn't be against a sequel).

horribly buggy mess for something that is essentially just a visual novel. pc controls get messed up constantly and controller support is just as ugly. minigames during trials aren't really that interesting either, hangman's gambit is now my least favorite version of itself.

I hadn't touched the series since the release of the second game, but I happened to see this was on sale over the holidays, and I decided I'd see how they finished things off. And I was impressed.

It is a rare thing for a third game in the series to be the best, but for me (at least), this has been my favorite of the three games I have played in the series. The story line was gripping. The cases were intriguing. The characters! I do not remember feeling emotionally involved in these games at all in the past, but the characters and all their emotions really hit me! There are characters who are endearing and wonderful and pure. I don't recall ever almost crying in any of the previous games, but some of the outcomes of some trials and some scenes had my heart wrenching in this.

I went into this game not expecting much. Just something to kill the time. When a series goes on for too long, things normally start to get very silly and the quality of games will go down. What I got what a gripping story and feeling a bunch of emotions that I never signed up for. And I loved it.

I do love it when a game surprises me.

So if you are on the fence about giving this one a try, give it a try. It may surprise you, too.

          DANGANRONPA GRIND 4/5:

          Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

          Review

This is TECHNICALLY the last Danganronpa game I have to play as S Summer Camp isn’t canon so while I will play S Summer Camp, it won’t be as in-depth as this one will be.

V3: Killing Harmony is the third-ish game in the franchise, to understand more of this game I had to watch 2 animes and a special which were all mid and didn’t matter. So jumping into this game without knowledge of Danganronpa 3 is fine. While this game improves upon the qualities of the gameplay and trial, I think the story, cast, and especially the ending are some of the weakest I’ve seen in the series (besides Ultra Despair Girls). V3 is my least favorite in the series, I normally don’t want to include spoilers in these reviews because I want to encourage people if they should play it or not but for me to judge this game I will be spoiling the game. So spoiler warning from here on out.

The first thing I want to talk about is the cast of characters because I have a LOT to say. The cast of characters is not my favorite, but I may like some such as Miu, Maki, Kaito, Ryoma, etc. But I don’t know… I just did not feel engaged with these characters as I did in the first two games. There were some amazing emotional moments like the piano scene with Suichi and Kaede in her ultimate lab, Kaito’s final speech and moments, Ryoma finding out that he has nobody in his life that gives a single shit about him and Gonta finding out that he killed Miu. But besides those amazing well-done moments, everyone else just felt bland. Kokichi is the quirky Tumblr boy similar to Nagito from the 2nd game but compared to the two of them, Nagito was way more interesting to learn about meanwhile Kokichi was just lame in my opinion. It's a boring version of Nagito who I got tired of by the end of the game. Maybe that was the game’s intention? But Nagito felt fresh and felt like a guy going from “wanting hope!” to immediately going insane from despair and causing his death to be this cat-and-mouse mystery. Kokichi was a dumbed-down version of that death. Keep in mind, I don’t hate any of these characters including Kokichi (well besides Tenko lol. I hate her) but they just weren’t as interesting as the previous cast was.

On a much more positive note, this game is gorgeous. The art for the characters, lighting, cutscenes, death, executions, etc look so fucking good. And I know that it’s mostly because it’s a newer game in the series, There wasn’t a moment where I went “Wow! This game looks like shit” but it doesn’t, it still looks like a Danganronpa game that could be released to this day!

The gameplay of this is a lot better than the other two games! In the last two games, I didn’t personally care about the trial as I just went “eh.. Whatever let’s investigate” but here? I found myself wanting more of the trials because they improved it. The new games you play are really good, the mine sweeper one I disliked but never hated. Psyche Taxi oozes with charm and the music makes me bop my head as I’m doing it. The sword from the previous game that I hated has been improved drastically, instead of moving your mouse like a crackhead, you click on the left and mouse buttons and have control over the sword. Hangman’s Gambit has also been improved and is WAY better than the 2nd game. The only one I hated was the panic one as for some reason it made me some input delay as I pressed the WASD keys, It got annoying fast. And unrevealing the truth is a lot dumb down than the last game which I wish it was like the first game but whatever. Not only have the trials been improved but you got a casino in the game which made me gamble like crazy in this game. You got slot machines, a game where you catch fish which is a lot like this version of Hangman’s Gambit, Treasure Hunter like Minesweeper but was my least played from the casino and finally, the outlaw run where you drive a car. These are unlocked as you progress through the game but you can unlock them all when you begin chapter 3. You use the mono casino coins to get skills, presents, and school handbook themes which I grinded for that miu theme. This is such a cool thing in the game and I wish that the previous games let you customize the school handbook!

The executions in this game are fucking brutal and more unforgiving than the previous two games. Kaede’s execution was a sign that it was going downhill from here, It feels like a car crash that you can’t help but not look away. Some of them even made me feel bad like Kiyo and Gonta’s execution. The one I didn’t like was Kirumi’s execution as I felt it could it could’ve been better.

The environment of the location is mid as hell in my opinion. While I liked that abandoned feeling of the location, Danganronpa 2’s location is A LOT better. It oozed you in and made you comfortable without you feeling like a kill wasn’t gonna happen. And that happened because of the island and its bright colors and saturation. The academy in this game is a lot hollow and supposed to endure despair however I’m more of a fan of reeling you in and then completely crushing everything.

Now that I’ve praised this game, time for my biggest issue that not only I have but seems like a whole lot of people have and that’s the ending. The plot twist is that the first two games were fake and never real and after those events, the future of the games involved real people participating in these events, having their entire memory wiped so they can partake as basically an OC. As much as I would’ve liked this ending, considering that I love the movie The Truman Show and this ending tries to do that, it doesn’t make sense and was executed poorly. I do like the idea that even though everything, that this is a fictional series, you felt real feelings and connected to these characters. But… the fact that these characters aren’t “canon” made playing the first two games plus Ultra Despair Girls is a waste of my time. Sure I had my emotional moments with a lot of characters but retconning everything just because the creator doesn’t want to make another Danganronpa game is disappointing. And Tsumugi could not be telling the whole truth as she says the events of V3 are fictional and while she tried to cosplay as Kaede, she had cospox. It could be because she put makeup on while Kaede wasn’t looking but why didn’t she say that if the world is fictional? I’m writing this review as I finished it and let it simmer a bit in my brain so the ending will grow on me but man… I’m disappointed.

As much as I loved V3, I still prefer the first and second games. Will one day return to this game and try to love it as I did with the first two games but who knows if that’ll happen. Weakest entry but not a bad game at all, just not as great as the first two were.

what an absolute trip of a game lol. this is one of those moments where i wish steam had a neutral review option because wow my feelings could not be more mixed. a lot of this is because i have insane beef with kazutaka kodaka, who is the entire reason i give this game a big THUMBS DOWN!!!

aesthetics wise, drv3 is a masterpiece. everything about the presentation of this game (minus the occasional wonky looking cg) knocks it out of the park. everything else.... eh. i can't say i hated it, but it's certainly one of the weakest dr entries.

the mysteries are good (its a danganronpa game, so of course), but wow. the instances of "oh wow they died welp onto the next chapter"-isms were at an all time high. if you weren't the chapter 1 killer you were basically chopped liver lol. also a bit mad at how out of place chapter 3 feels. the devs stated they wanted the whole case to be like a horror movie, and i would grade them a 1/10 on that factor. it was so stupid i was rolling my eyes at every development post the first body discovery. i would take story relevance over a fun idea (that was poorly executed to boot) a thousand times over. also, the return of kodaka's favorite (re: most infuriating) trope: fridged female characters for the sake of boring male ones. yippeeeeee

the fanservice in this game is arguably my biggest problem. i'll admit that it can sometimes land when done tastefully, but in drv3... why y'all.... just why. i do not need to see naked high school girls nearly as frequently as i did in this game. some of the love hotel scenes (interesting concept, insane execution) made me feel so uncomfortable i had to take a break. looking at you himiko. it's all just so painfully unnecessary, to the point where it genuinely detracts from the experience. after the 300th boob shot, you just start to feel annoyed anytime a character's rendered chest takes up 2/3rds of the cgs. who this is supposed to be for again, other than freakdaka??? i hate this.

ironically, i actually thought a lot of the meta-commentary ( especially in regards to how fans will continue to demand content from a series even after it's reached it's natural conclusion ) very interesting to consider, but it seems a bit....preachy?? almost as if the devs are saying "wow you guys are such MONSTERS for demanding more death game content. thats so AWFUL that you would keep asking for people to die for your entertainment" as if there isnt a very big distinction btwn dgr and finding excitement in actual tragedy (which is almost unequivocally agreed to be a bad thing). incredible lesson from the high schooler oogling incest lover.

all that is to say... i still liked v3. sigh. i think it's a massive letdown compared to the previous installments, but at the end of the day, it's a fun ride that leaves you with some interesting ideas to brood over. i would only suggest playing this game if you really, really liked the first two, or if you just want to join the cultural experience of having Played Danganronpa. do NOT pay $40 for this though, definitely wait for it to go on sale.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony while definitely has a weaker plot and writing compared to the other titles in the series, does improve a lot of aspects, specifically the minigames within the class trials. The signature Danganronpa aesthetic returns with potentially one of the better character designs within the series. Even after finishing the game, there is a lot of content in the form of the Ultimate Talent Development Plan and the Despair Dungeon, both of which are decently enjoyable considering they are an extension of the main game as well as additional post-game gamemodes that exist throughout the series.

Overall the game is a solid finale to the series despite having a controversial ending.

The ending wasn’t that bad guys, this whole game is pretty good even if there are some writing issues. You should play it if you liked the first two, but get it on sale because it’s way overpriced. Worst Mainline game in the series from a writing perspective but still really good

Aside from the wishy washy ending the game was great! I still stand by 1 and 2 though for sure. I'd say this game is definetly better in a lot of areas but the real downer is the ending. If you look at this entry as a standalone and it not being connected to 1-ultra despair girls- 2 - and 3 (the anime) its solid but it ruins the hopes peak story in my opinion. I will say though that this isn't a bad game by any means!

This is my favorite one out of the three games and that's primarily because this one hits the balance between good story telling and good gameplay:

          The Best Class Trial Gameplay:
Class Trials in the previous games were fine. They served their purpose in helping you figure out the crime. To say I had fun with them would be a lie. This game helps shake up the monotony of class trials in a number of ways. First, it has the best minigames in the series: The best version of hangman's gambit, and logic taxi (mind mite is also there). Additionally, there's mass panic debates and scrum debate. The former is a great chance of pace from normal non-stop debates while the later has banger music.

          Exploration:
After the lackluster setting of the second game we are now back to first person 3-D exploration. The setting of this game is cool visually and it certainly feels great to explore though it doesn't capture the same feelings as the first games setting.

          The Mysteries:
They were all pretty alright for the most part. None really stands out in my mind outside of chapter 4.

          The Story:
The story is pretty divisive and it is for good reason. Let's just say I like the ending and think it's the perfect ending for this series.

          The Side modes:
This is the true strength of this game. The prior games had absolute jokes for side modes, but here? We've side modes that helps capture what everyone always wanted.

First, the resource management modes of the prior games have been replaced with a dating sim. Makes sense.

Second, there is a board game mode that helps show you a what if scenario where all the characters from all 3 games went to school together. No killing, no strings attached. I loved this mode. Seeing how certain characters would interact is great and the game mode has loads of replayability.

Additionally, you level up the character you pick for that board game mode and can then use that character in a rudimentary dungeon crawling turned based rpg mode. I'm a sucker for turn-based rpgs as long as they aren't slow and boring, which this one isn't.

So yeah. I like this game because of the gameplay mostly. That's why it's my favorite.

V3 (and the series as a whole)'s ending hits like an iron ball dropping on your head, expect it actually misses, so the author has to come out of his hiding maul with you an iron ball himself, after which he blames innocent people for having bad taste (because they liked something he wrote).

But you know what, that's taking the ending at face value, in the first place I didn't even identify with the "outside audience" shown in the last trial, I genuinely was just confused then lol. I can do some lifting myself and try to cherry pick which parts were the final mastermind were lying about and which parts are true, as well as make assumption about K1-B0's true nature to arrive a conclusion I would be personally fine with (because it is oPeN tO iNtErPrEtAtIoN, god I generally dislike such type of ending, I want to see what someone else wrote damn it, not "imagine what you want to see"). And I did, now I feel like I have become the Ultimate Cope (and makes me feel like I'm defending the author, which sucks because I don't want to do it, people bigger than me should fend off for themselves), though this prevents the previous parts of the series from losing significance at least (hostage situation).

Or you know, you can also just follow "this takes in an alternate continuity", that's from the author himself I think and its the easiest way around (in the case you dislike this one's ending). Although personally I like making things harder for myself.

10 out of "I'm having unholy thoughts about Kaede".

The visuals have improved quite alot, the music was good, character cast had its highs and lows as usual, the cases were also solid. All in all what you would expect from a Danganronpa sequel, if ther wasnt the awfull writing which cumlulated in one of the most cringe conclusions to a strory I have ever witnessed.

I dont want to spoil anything here but the intention from the writer was quite clear to whine about how he did not want to create another Danganronpa and to tell the audience to fuck off. I mean he could also just not make the game instead of scamming money off people to make them witness that tantrum disguised as storyline.

It is very tempting to click "not recommend" here after watching that trainwreck of a conclusion unfold, but that would not be fair since all but the final Chapter was an quite enjoyable experience all things considered.

TLDR: 95% of the game is good, the last 5% is atrocious

Danganronpa V3. we've done this song and dance before, we all know what's to come. even more students taken from our privileged hopes peak trapped in some random academy this time. Monokuma's back with... kids? That's right, the Monokubs are a new edition to this third installment. This time we follow along with kaede through this death game with more mini games, more murder and heartbreak. So exactly what we'd expect. The story is pretty good this time, and the murders are good if a little too long. the ending is one of those endings where you either love it or hate it, Personally I liked it but you decide for yourself. Overall I like this game, would recommend it if you liked the first two.

Danganronpa V3 is by far the most controversial entry in the entire series—somehow even more so than the Danganronpa 3 anime, which is saying something. I’ve seen people call it their absolute favorite, while others rank it as their least favorite.

My opinion on this game is all over the place, but overall, I’d recommend it—though it’s my least favorite of the mainline games (not counting the anime) when everything is taken into account.

The best thing about V3 is how consistently entertaining it is in its moment-to-moment scenes. It’s not necessarily because the character cast is the best—that part is mixed—but the game really goes all out to mix things up, even while sticking to the typical Danganronpa case formula. For example, the beginning has two protagonists waking up in lockers, being chased by mechs, and meeting the other students in an over-the-top, chaotic intro that even includes a sewer platforming minigame.

Case 1 stands out as the best first case in the series. It’s not just the introduction of a female protagonist, but also the unique and tragic ending. Compared to the first cases in Danganronpa 1 and 2, which felt like the culprits deserved their fates, this one is much more heartbreaking.

Visually, V3 is a clear step up from its predecessors, with its higher-quality sprites, detailed backgrounds, and smoother animations. Even small details like the classroom debates and map sections feel more polished, which reflects its development for PS4, Vita, and PC.

As for the cast, it’s a mixed bag. The standout characters and their arcs are excellent, and the group that sticks around until the end is surprisingly compelling. However, the game leans heavily into gimmicky characters, and a lot of them are hard to like. Angie feels more dumb and annoying than endearing, Tenko’s man-hating shtick wears thin fast, Korekiyo is just creepy from start to finish, and Kokichi… well, he’s divisive. I know he has fans who appreciate his gremlin energy, but for me, he was more irritating than anything—mean, chaotic, and constantly getting away with it. And then there's the MonoKubs, I don't think I've seen a single fan of them.

Beyond Case 1, V3 follows the usual Danganronpa case structure. While the story is entertaining and quirky, looking back, it’s hard not to notice how closely the formula mirrors Danganronpa 1 and 2. To me, it feels like writer Kazutaka Kodaka was running out of ideas—or maybe even getting tired of the series.

Which brings us to the most controversial part of the game: the ending. This is where opinions truly diverge.

I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I appreciate that they tried something completely different from the plot twists in Danganronpa 1, 2, and even the anime. On the other hand, it felt like a negative deus ex machina—an out-of-left-field twist that seemed like Kodaka’s way of bowing out of the series altogether. The fact that there hasn’t been a new mainline Danganronpa game since only reinforces that idea.

The ending didn’t ruin the game for me, but it did lower my overall score from an 8/10 to a 7/10.

Overall, Danganronpa V3 was decently enjoyable and kept me entertained from start to finish. But its flaws—unlikable characters, a predictable case structure, and that divisive ending—make it a game I only kind of like, when I really wanted to love it.

PS: My favorite girl was Kaede Akamatsu.

You know that "media literacy is dead" meme? It unironically applies to many people who hate on the ending. I'm not saying it's perfect and that you're wrong if you dislike it but the entire theme and the new mechanic of this game is lies, we don't know what is true and what is a lie so saying this game "invalidates" previous ones is just dumb. We can't even know for sure how much if anything from the ending reveals was true. When they go meta at the end they straight up say that "it doesn't matter if it's fiction because it can still impact the real world" so even if we go with the doomer interpretation of "only DRV3 happened, the rest were fiction in that universe" it still impacted the real world (and let me remind you that all 3 were fictional so the 3rd one taking place in a fictional world where 1 and 2 were fiction doesn't mean the previous ones were "any less real").

And of course all things must come to an end at some point, they ended the storyline with the DR 3 anime but people wanted more danganronpa so they got one more danganronpa game to go with it albeit in a tongue in cheek way pointing out how it'd always be the same, people die, class trial, hope wins.

Also a side note about the ending but I found it funny how they basically reused the ending from the spin off title (ultra despair girls). It made sense there as it wasn't a mainline game so they played into it by rejecting the choice between hope and despair, while here they did the same thing exactly because it's a mainline title so they could break away from the established pattern of hope always winning
