Cryptark gets what it means to be a roguelike, at least for the campaign mode.
Everything is a calculated risk and investment of your main resource, money: for example, before committing to a mission you choose what weapons to bring with you, for each weapon you pay more the more ammo you bring, and you do NOT get anything back for unspent ammo.
Same for consumable items, such as repair packs and nuclear demolition charges.
Ammo-less weapons, such as melee and energy options? Those have a price too, and they might turn out to be far more expensive than conventional counterparts if you don't get enough use out of them.
Passive upgrades? You guessed it, you have to pay for each mission you want to bring them with you, also they take up an item slot each: sure, immunity to environmental hazards is nice, but is it really worth it over higher damage (and thus more bang for you buck)?
More mech suit armor, aka more starting hitpoints? Pay up.
You find a repair pod on a mission? You need money to use it.
Even dying is just a steep repair bill, and as long as you can afford it you're free to try again.
And if you want to earn more money, you have no option but to pick harder missions and complete more bonus objectives.
The mission themselves can get pretty brutal, which I also like: defense turrets on the outside of the ship that basically guarantee damage if you try to cross their firing range, factory systems creating drones indefinitely and at a concerning pace, repair systems steadily undoing your progress, shuffle systems invalidating long term plans, nuclear systems being nuclear systems...
Of course, if you manage to keep the costs low in the early missions you can bring out bigger and badder guns for the later and harder ones, and maybe even afford a couple deaths.
Only two things persist between mission in a campaign: your money, and the tech you discover on ships (which unlocks weapons and items for you to use).
As a result, the success of a run depends almost exclusively on your skill, both in the mission itself and in the planning before it: there's no getting carried by a couple lucky finds as in so many roguelites, you need to get good and consistently make smart choices the whole way through.
The rogue mode is, oddly enough, much more relaxed: no buying anything, just equipping what you find in missions and replacing it once it runs dry, and what you can find is far more plentiful than what you can afford to bring in campaign mode.
On the negative side, the game is full of technical issues, mostly hard crashes: thankfully the missions are not too long (usually 15-30 minutes for the late game ones) and the game USUALLY allows you to reload back to the start without losing anything.
Sometime you can also see badly generated missions, for example unreachable core/shield systems making things unwinnable, but that's pretty rare in my experience.
This is a good ass game. You can complete it in an hour or two, sure, but it is worth the price.
Gameplay is fast, action packed robot bashing fun. Like playing Armored Core with a light mech. And the customization options both give you awesome tools to hack some bots and also play into the planing.
The game demands that you plan your path ahead and taunts you to put holes on that plan by giving you some extra cash and goodies so you are always thinking about what compromises you will take so you can get a sick weapon for your exosuit on the next raid. Every weapon, expendable equipment and armor point you put on your exosuit weights on your pocket, and you must be sure that you will have a profit at the end of a mission.
You will need every penny and the best gear possible when you get to the last level of the game. So plan ahead, try out different combinations, learn the game so you can complete missions with optimized gear, and make every bullet count. I would wish you good luck, but you'll need more than that if you want to destroy the Cryptark.
Pros:
Music
Graphics
Concept
Customization
Voice Acting
Vibes
General Concept
Cons:
Gameplay
Glitches
Crashes
Unbalanced enemy design
Unbalanced Ship layout
Enemy Hyper mobility + The ability to travel through walls and doors
The sheer enemy amount makes most modular aspects of the game pointless
I don't think the game does enough to balance its self out to warrant being recommended to the average person.
You play as a guy in a mech suit scrapping large ships for sale later. These ship all have their defenses activated of course.
Almost no single idea in this game is bad, its when combined it becomes obvious the developers just decided it was good enough and sent it out.
You collect many different and unique weapons throughout the game, but none of them are cost effective when combined with the number of enemies you'll be facing endgame. The weapons that are cost effective for what they are don't hit hard enough and the ones that do are far too expensive. I think the game intends you to balance that out, but there is no balance. It simply does not work out. You always need more. Health, ammo, weapons.
When exploring the ships the most dreaded enemy for me personally is the most basic melee only stabby boys. They're way too difficult to hit, depending on the ship they're literally endless and can teleport, and have a lingering hit box that you'll likely run into after they're done attacking. Picking up specific weapons to deal with them is an option, but those same weapons aren't useful anywhere else. Your basic melee as useless against moving targets as it flings you around violently.
The giant heavy armored guys are just a slight nuisance in comparison. All enemies can move through walls and doors, even attack through them. You cant of course. Which adds to the absurd difficulty in dealing with many enemies at once.
In prepping these ships for sale. you have to take out certain systems in order to get to the brain. Again, fine at the start of the game. Repair systems are the worst. Ships can have two more then a minute apart in a straight journey, effectively making finishing the ship off impossible, as it only take a minute to fully repair a system. Example. To kill the core you need to destroy two repair systems, and bare minimum two shield generators. And do it within one minute. That's already very difficult without being hounded by hoards of bots. Ideally you want to take out the repair systems and deal with the rest, but it literally doesn't matter when you can barely make it to the other repair system even if you make a B Line for it. This is also compounded by the fact that you may not have a map to work it as the ship might have a cloak system, which also needs breaking.
There's a mechanic in the game where to open certain doors you need to use the directional keys, requiring you to take your hand away from the mouse, which is how you aim and shoot. A fine and interesting idea on its own, but when combined with the fact that 60% of the time it glitches and doesn't work forcing you to do it again, certain enemies can lock you in place and force you to do this. Which might not be so bad except for, again the sheer amount of bots later on in addition with how you've handled your loadout. You may not even be equipped to be in a massive cqb. In which case you're just screwed.
There's also the matter of bots just not being hit by you randomly. The bullet (or whatever) goes right through them and nothing. The game likes to crash pretty often as well.
This game is comprised of many pretty moving parts that just don't go well together. It needs adjustment. I've seen people compare this to FTL, but FTL is an infinitely more balanced game where the difficulty makes sense.
The thing that could be done to make me change my mind is an overall readjustment of enemy number or re-balancing of equipment cost. Everything else I can let go, but I feel these two particular aspects ruin the fun. It's just not fun to play.
Review after 15 Hours: A Unique Roguelike Sci-Fi Shooter
Cryptark delivers a challenging and engaging experience that combines tactical planning with fast-paced action. With its procedural generation, unique suit abilities, and satisfying combat mechanics, it stands out as a rewarding roguelike shooter.
Pros:
- Replayability: Procedural generation ensures that derelict ships have unique layouts each time, making every run feel fresh. The variety of suits also adds depth to gameplay, encouraging experimentation with different strategies.
- Atmosphere & Soundtrack: Excellent lighting effects and immersive music create a gritty sci-fi ambiance that pulls you into the game’s world.
- Satisfying Combat: Shooting mechanics feel impactful, with a wide range of weapons and tools to customize your playstyle.
- Intruder Suit Gameplay: The Intruder suit brings a methodical, stealthy approach to missions, offering a refreshing change of pace and making strategic planning essential.
- Challenge: Missions require careful resource management and strategic targeting of ship systems, rewarding players who plan ahead.
Cons:
- Steep Learning Curve: The game can feel overwhelming at first, especially with multiple systems, weapons, and loadout options to master.
- Difficulty Spikes: The mid-game (around derelict ship 3) introduces a significant jump in challenge, and the final ship, Cryptark, is on a completely different difficulty level.
[*] UI Controls: The UI interface in the menus of the game feels clunky at times. Better mouse integration could improve the overall flow.
Final Thoughts:
Cryptark is a must-play for fans of challenging roguelike shooters with a strategic edge. Its procedural generation and variety of suits keep gameplay fresh and replayable, while its combat and atmosphere are top-notch. However, players should prepare for a steep learning curve and some punishing difficulty spikes.Rating: 3.5/5
If you enjoy tactical gameplay, tough challenges, and a gritty sci-fi aesthetic, Cryptark is well worth diving into.
Roguelite is just an atrocious excuse for
"we couldn't figure out how to balance things"
or
"You won the game, now what? We don't know either."
A very enjoyable and strategic roguelike which is challenging without being absurdly difficult. The aesthetics are excellent and the gameplay is tight enough. I've mostly played this on the PS5, often in coop. Recommended, 8/10.
tickles that 'plan a heist' part of your brain something good
I was looking for a new game that would get its hooks into me. This one did it. Great little game.
Little bit of jank, but a fun little roguelite.
The campaign is more of a tutorial and most of the meat is after the fact.
Enjoyable!
Wanted to leave some information about getting Cryptark to run. I was getting an error "no suitable graphics card found" when I attempted to start the game. I eventually figured out that by reducing my laptop screen from 4k resolution (3840x2400) down to 1920x1080, that the game would actually start. Hopefully this helps some people out who are searching for a solution on Google.
