Описание

In her mid-20's, Kelly has been forced to move back to Nebraska. Back to that flat expanse, that seemingly endless sea of rustling cornstalks peppered by rusty silos and rustier towns. A typically intense Midwestern storm is approaching while Kelly is out; she needs to get home.

Three Fourths Home is a visual short story in which you assume the role of Kelly during her drive through the storm. In the 20 miles between her grandparents' crumbling barn and her parents' home, she receives a phone call from her mother. While driving through a stylized representation of rural Nebraska, you must navigate an extended conversation between Kelly and her parents and younger brother.

Three Fourths Home takes a look into a specific moment of these characters' lives and their relationships with one another. The narrative touches on a variety of issues affecting Kelly and her family, including disability, adulthood, and familial obligation.

Gameplay

As a visual short story, dialogue choice is the primary focus of Three Fourths Home. Between the main game and the epilogue, nearly 800 unique dialogue choices shade the story differently based on how you play. In addition to dialogue choice, you must also keep driving in order to keep the conversation going. Stop, and time slows to a crawl. Kelly has to move forward in order to get home.

New to the Extended Edition

For its Steam release, Three Fourths Home: Extended Edition includes an expanded edit of the initial release as well as several new elements, including a new epilogue in addition to a number of extra features.

Epilogue: Idling in the Rubble

Set at a bus stop in snowy Minnesota, Idling in the Rubble follows another conversation that Kelly has with her mother. The 20-30 minute experience delves into Kelly's past, examining her reasons for moving back to Nebraska and her internal struggle following the events of the main game.

Extra Features

Radio
Listen to the soundtrack by Neutrino Effect
Stories
Four new stories penned by Kelly's younger brother, Ben
Photos
Take a look through Kelly's final project for her college photography class

I am in between on this one. On one hand the concept and story are quite interesting, on the other conversations seem tedious, like a chore for all involved participants. Very simple UI. Once more a story about a people who do not know how to communicate with each other. Choices do not matter much but in the epilogue they may lead to a different outcome. Since I cannot give a neutral I would rather go for a positive. I would say it is too short for the current price so get it on discount.

Today, we delve into the evocative world of Three Fourths Home, an interactive narrative that's as emotionally charged as a Shakespearean tragedy, with a splash of modern-day humor thrown in for good measure. Developed by Bracket Games, this unique game takes you on a heartwarming journey through the complexities of family relationships, like attending a family reunion filled with laughter, tears, and awkward moments. So, grab your tissues and a box of chocolates, and let's dive into the immersive world of Three Fourths Home.

A Moving Tale of Family Bonds:
Three Fourths Home is an emotional rollercoaster, like a heartfelt letter from a loved one that touches your soul. The game's narrative follows the life of Kelly, a young woman on a phone call with her family as she drives through a thunderstorm, setting the stage for a deeply human exploration of family dynamics.

The storytelling is as nuanced as a symphony conductor guiding a masterpiece. The game's dialogue and interactions reveal the complex relationships between Kelly and her family, making you feel like a participant in their lives.

An Interactive Phone Call:
The game's unique mechanic of a phone call is a stroke of genius, like chatting with a long-lost friend on a rainy day. As you make choices during the conversation, you'll shape the outcome of the story, much like a choose-your-own-adventure novel.

The phone call is more than just a gameplay element; it's a window into the characters' hearts and minds. You'll find yourself pondering the impact of your words, just like you would in real-life conversations.

Minimalistic Beauty:
Three Fourths Home is a testament to how minimalism can be breathtakingly beautiful, like a single rose standing out in a vast field. The game's simple black and white visuals are complemented by a moody soundtrack, creating an atmosphere that's as immersive as a dream.

The lack of flashy graphics allows the narrative to take center stage, like a delicate flower blooming in a sea of distractions. It's a reminder that games can be powerful storytelling tools, even without photorealistic graphics.

A Slice of Life:
The game's narrative explores the ordinary moments in life, like snapshots in a family photo album. It's a refreshing departure from the epic battles and grand adventures often found in games, reminding us that the little moments matter too.

Through its intimate exploration of mundane events, Three Fourths Home captures the essence of the human experience. It's like a warm hug from a loved one, reminding you of the beauty in the everyday.

Humor in the Storm:
Amidst the stormy emotions, Three Fourths Home weaves humor into its narrative, like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds. The moments of levity add a touch of warmth and authenticity, making the characters feel like old friends.

The game's witty dialogue and clever observations will leave you chuckling, like sharing inside jokes with your closest companions. It's a reminder that even in difficult times, laughter can be a beacon of light.

An Emotional Resonance:
Three Fourths Home is more than just a game; it's an emotional experience that lingers in your heart long after the credits roll. It's like a soul-stirring melody that echoes through your thoughts, prompting self-reflection.

The game's honest portrayal of family dynamics will strike a chord with players, like a heartfelt ballad that speaks to the depths of the human soul. It's an invitation to explore our own family relationships and cherish the connections we hold dear.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, Three Fourths Home is a captivating and emotionally charged experience that immerses you in the intimate world of family relationships. With its unique storytelling, interactive phone call mechanic, and minimalist beauty, it's a game that leaves a lasting impression like a cherished memory.

There's things about this that work, and some things that didn't quit work for me. I think the first main thing is visual presentation and inference; It's very simple and wonderful to look at from an aesthetic point of view, but the visual layout was a bit jarring and unfocused, the illusion of player agency didn't work for me (for example, I never saw the need to control driving the car when it doesn't add anything to the overall crux of the game, it just felt like an unnecessarily feature to make the player feel like they were, no pun intended, steering the story along). I didn't mind the textual-layout in some moments, but in other moments, I found it was hard to read and follow and would actually click to continue without realising their was still text I had missed (primarily on the right side of the screen, Kelly's text); this wasn't a major issue, as I don't think I ended up missing anything, but it would have been nice to allow for a user-friendly layout.
That said, these minor little nick-picky issues aside, the strength lies in it's writing, and I think especially the way it was able to convey so much distant and varied personalities among it's three text-only characters. It's narrative ambiguity might put off some, but I felt there was enough context to grasp your own satisfying conclusions. The maingame length might put off some people (it's not overly long) but I think the gratifying added epilogue gives you more dept that than might appear lacking in the main game to make up for it.
I would say this is worth the AU $8, if you're looking for a beautiful bittersweet storytelling that can you get through in an hour. A solid job, just which maybe there were some accessibility options to adjust the visual presentation.

This was a good story about a girl and her family. I really enjoyed it. It's simple to play. D is to drive, the arrow keys are to make choices, and the space bar is basically your enter button. The graphics are simple, black. gray, and while, yet beautifully done. If you enjoy a short visual novel, this is for you.

This is a pretty decent visual novel type game. The writing is very believable and the characters make sense. The story is also pretty down to earth. If you want something short and requiring minimal effort to play, this is for you. It's also a very easy and fast achievement completion.

I feel like I wasn't supposed to play this. It seems to personal for an outsider to truly connect with the story. The atmosphere and style are amazing! The storm builds suspense very well. But the options you have to choose are to conflicting and the answers too vague for you to understand much of what is happening. The dialogue captures how easily words can be misinterpreted, though. I'm not sure if I can recommend this or not ...

So, let us Start by saying that this is a storybased graphic novel. If you are not in to that, ignore this title!

Contrary to the other reviewers I read here, this game is NOT played through in 2 hours!
You would need around 3-4 hours to reveal every aspect of the Story. Neither finishing the "main game" nor finishing "the epilogue" would count as 'finished'. To unravel the complete story and realising what all of this Story is about would have you read short-stories of Ben and looking at photographs of Kelly and doing every little thing this game offers you to explore.

This complete game is a form of art. Again, if you do not like this kind of game, do not play it.

All of that said, I liked how the game was made. That everything you could do, click, read or see in this game completes the Story
BUT I did not like the story itself. I can not even tell you why, neither would I, in fear of spoilering. And you should experience the story yourself because this is really my subjective perspective.

I bought this extended edition story during the summer sale, and I feel like I should put emphasis on the fact that this is a story. The only game mechanic it has is holding down the button to drive forward. Otherwise you're just choosing dialogue options but those options only effect the mood of the story, which will change how you feel about the ending.

I chose the "nice" options, and I ended up feeling ambivalent about the ending. I didn't have much of a connection to Kelly or her family, and as someone that was born and raised in the Midwest there's really only one way your day can go when a sudden and severe storm system moves in, so I didn't get the "punch" from the ending that other people mention. There's not much motivation for me to go back and go through the other options since I found the first read through tedious enough to begin with.

The other parts of the main game are trying to decide if there's anything worth looking at in the scenery, and quietly interpreting Ben's story how ever you think is correct given everything you've learned from the dialogue up until now and just carrying that with you, or going online to ponder about it with others. The epilogue is apparently where the dialogue branches actually take you to different endings, but I'm not interested enough to read it.

I suppose it's worth the 5 bucks if you look at it as a short story because overall the writing is pretty good and if you play through the epilogue you'll put some decent time in. But if short stories aren't your thing or you don't think you can justify spending the $5 on a story you might not like that much, you can skip it.

A short and quite melancholic game with simplistic design and good soundtrack.

Three Fourths Home does actually hit a bit close to home; not too much but there's still the relatable story of moving away from your parents, temporarily coming back and knowing how things has changed while you're gone. Arguing with your parents over things that in the long run might not matter.

It's one of those games of its time, back in the mid-2010s when the genre of experimental games were huge; for example Kentucky Route Zero and other "mechanic-less" games. There's not much to this game other than the story. But beyond that, there's also the feeling of actually driving through this storm; not knowing when you'll arrive to your destination. If you dig deeper, there's something in that metaphor.

The game is shorter than the 2 hours I spent in-game, this is the time if you want to get all the achivements. In total I'd say the game takes around an hour to finish if not less.

I recommend this game, maybe not at full price but definitely pick it up and try it out on a sale!

Three Fourths Home is a pretty unique visual novel. It revolves around a woman who is having a phone conservation with their family while driving home during a tornado warning. You have to use the arrow key to drive and the conservation stops when you stop driving so you have to keep moving as well as choosing responses. You start to get a sense of why she was out wondering around old family property and what issues the family is going through. The dialogue is some of the best I have seen in a visual novel and the background story is well done. The atmosphere of rain and tornado sirens going off while driving really set a good mood. The soundtrack over the credits was also well matched. There were some dialogue choices that were in brackets and I couldn’t tell if they were supposed to be an inner monologue; sarcasm; or something else. They still got a response from whoever I was talking to so I don’t think inner monologue fit but the responses were always hostile or prompted a negative response. It didn’t seem to fit with the other parts of the conservation. There is an epilogue to play when done with the main game but it wasn’t as well done as the main game. It sheds light on some of the main characters life issues but just failed to hold my interest as much. The text was pretty hard to read at first but luckily I noticed that there was an option to switch to a more bold font which solved that issue for me.

I played Three Fourths Home on Linux. It never crashed on me. It uses the Unity engine. There is one graphics setting as well as an AA toggle. The games used up 2334MB of disk space. I didn’t notice any spelling errors. There is a manual save option you can use at any time but there is only one save slot so you will overwrite the save each time. Alt-Tab didn’t work.

VRAM Used: 802-971MB
CPU Usage: 1-4%
RAM Usage: 2.8-2.9GB

Overall I would recommend the game to fans of visual novels. It tries to set itself apart in terms of content and game play and succeeds. It’s warts are minor and didn’t hurt the experience. I paid $2.33 CAD for the game and it was well worth it for that. The full price of $5.49 CAD is also a decent fit for it although that’s about the maximum I would pay. I finished the main game and epilogue in 58 minutes.

My Score: 7/10

To me, this game basically felt like Twine done well and interestingly. It successfully builds the mood it's portraying, thanks to clever use of simple controls and visuals. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to just anyone, but I see it as a case study in the genre.

To quote some of the bonus material under the main menu:

"[...] Your choices (location, titling, ordering) feel rushed, or even derivative. Possibly even pretentious. BUT! [...] the subject matter you've chosen has the potential to be very interesting. For some reason, this project manages to be better than the sum of its parts."

The artist behind Three Fourths Home has crafted something lovely: it could just be me, but I found its exploration of time past intriguing and heartrending. Like Kelly's photography professor, I find myself willing to give this game a good 70/100 - it has its shortcomings, but it feels like a great game.

Three Fourths Home is a short, read-heavy experience that reflects on life when it doesn't turn out so well, and hits that mark pretty spot on. With that said, the game might not be for everyone; it is pretty much all about the dialogue, with few substantial changes to the environment and few controls (plus the fact that they really should've made a toggle option for driving - you can only hold D for so long). However, if you allow yourself to take in the story, to explore the different options in the dialogue tree and learn about the family, it turns out to be a really gripping tale with some great detailing. The way the backgrounds follows the story (your character says "I'm at the highschool" and it appears in the background, for instance) is also beautiful and is very much served by the scaled down aesthetic, as it really is noticable when something appears.

And then we have the Epilogue, which is a must-play when you've finished the game. While the main game has the plot and the overall story interactions, this is where the heart of the game really lies - at least in my opinion. It hits every beat supremely well and illustrates the main character's feelings in a way that is both artistic and yet very clear (at least for someone who has gone through similar things). The main game is good, but the epilogue elevates the experience in a way to make it great, and with some side content that actually adds to the story and the themes, Three Fourths Home actually manages to become something unique.

If you're looking for a good story with poignancy, I suggest you give this game a try. It will probably be worth your while.

A simple, largely text-based VN with a smattering of choices, Three Fourths Home does a good job of setting mood and getting across the emotions in its story. The plot is only told in small bits and pieces, leaving a lot unexplained. This style isn't for everyone, but I like how the openness left a lot of room for speculation, and relating to things in your own life, or the lives of people you know.

Three Fourths Home is a story based game. It's storming, and you are driving your car through the Nebraska landscape on the way home while having a conversation on the cell phone w/ your parents and brother (conversation in text on the screen). As you drive through the storm you get to know the family's problems and perhaps identify w/ a young adult who's trying to strike out in life for the first time.

The Extended Edition added some new elements to the game, such as the epilogue, an extra scene and the new save system. Overall a good addition to the main game itself, and the epilogue also sheds some light to the main character's past.

Note, this is not a game as much as it is a multimedia presentation w/ a few user interface controls. It has a good story, the art design is nice, and the visuals and sounds create a nice atmosphere, but there's not a lot beyond that. If this story appeals to you go for it, but understand there's not really gameplay as much as reading the story and watching how the visuals interact w/ the story that's happening. It's targeted to a specific audience. For me, it is art, but it lacks some depth either in the gameplay and plot.

The gameplay is fairly simple, all you have to do is simply holding down the Right Trigger button to drive/walk forward (or the right directional key on the keyboard) and then selecting options in order to take part in a telephone conversation. There is not much to do beside that, and I have to wonder why they'd bother adding the button for the wiper, also for the horn. Through the entire time I was driving really slow, afraid I might hit something on the road but nothing really happens.

To sum it up, I was curious about the title, and thought it was well done, but at the same time it won't leave me thinking about it after I've seen it. I'm always happy to try games that do something a bit different, and I appreciate the idea behind the game, but at an hour in length (the rest is used for achievement) and no real resolution to anything my first thought upon seeing the credits role was 'is that it?' Despite the lack of a gameplay, I still recommend this based from my experience with the game, and if you're curious about it, it's a good experience for what it is.

The game is simple. You hold the D to go forward and select a few dialogue options.
I was really excited about the intensity of feelings it evoked using that simplicity.

And there was The Epilogue! The game is worth it just for that experience. Try it, preferrably over a glass of whisky when it's raining outside.

It starts off good. Something different, very unique. Interesting. I didnt connect too much with the characters but thats okay. I was enjoying the ride (literally: the game is your drive home). But then I reached the halfway point. I will not spoil anything but something is injected into the conversation and it feels extremely unnatural. It broke the immersion for me.

What was injected wasnt bad. It was kind of interesting. It just did not fit with the game, or what was happening on screen, and after this not so short segment was over I had a hard time figuring out the point of it.

The wind beat down on her car as the wet road dared to make her rushed driving a dangerous affair. She was Three Fourths Home, talking hurriedly to her mom on the phone - yet it all seemed so far way. She had been gone for a long time. Now that she was back, she wasn't so sure she should be.

Or was she?

TL;DR at bottom!

Story: It can develop into whatever you wish it to, the different thinks you can say change other people's answers drastically.
Graphics: The well done minimalistic design adds to the atmosphere and makes it easy to focus on what's important: the story.
Music: It's delightful! You can play it while riding through the storm (and I strongly recommend you do) and it's sure to make your ride even more interesting.

Final thoughts: This is a game for casual players. People hoping for gunshots, gore or utter action will bore themselves easily. A game such as this is made to be appreciated by people who are into the genre and who have the patience to make choices and read text. This game is not for everyone, like all games aren't. With that in mind, I strongly recommend it - but with the prospect of not doing so for everyone.

TL;DR:

Three Fourths Home is a game about its characters. It's minimalistic in regards of appearance, but deep when considering thoughts, actions and outcomes. It is much like real life, when you can decide to pry, dwell or avoid certain situations and topics. If you like interesting choices, good music and atmosphere and deep thoughts, you are sure to bask in this one's light.

I'm so damn tired of people complaining about paying for art. You don't like it? fine, it's up for debate, but you're really going to complain that 7 measly bucks is too much? and you want multiple endings? more "gameplay"? seriously? this is a damn fine "game" but the word "game" is no longer what it once was. we've moved past it. you don't need points, or kills, or combos, or new game+ or god damn "winning". it's interactive art, if you don't like the art then fine, but stop saying it's not good because it's not "gamey" enough, it's just stupid.

Oh and holding a button down the entire time to drive adds to the feeling of driving through a crazy ass thunderstorm while having some intense conversations. sorry there's no driving mechanic that allows you to crash and lose and start at the last checkpoint, jesus.

Three Fourths Home: Extended Edition is a character study. You learn about Kelly, her family, and the trials that have led to this place and time. Kelly is trying to get in home in the middle of a summer storm in Nebraska. While driving she is talking to first her mother and then the other members of her family. The interactive comes in the form of selecting how Kelly responds during the conversation.

If you are looking for a game with a lot of interactivity, this game is not for you. But I suspect anyone reading this would know that already. If the general descriptions of the game have piqued your interest, then the game is worth your time and money. With that said, make sure you play the second scenario (Kelly waiting for the bus in Minnesota) to get the full sense of the game. Also, the stories that are included as extras are worth your time as well.
