eh
Sometimes I just enjoy an impossible twin-stick shooter than can kick my ass fast, and that's Overture. Too much grind to be considered an enjoyable roguelike, but I think the classes and the challenge can keep you going. Or not. That's ok, too, we all have skill issues.
This game is the biggest piece of diarrhea shit ass buttsuck fuck piece of garbage ever. This game somehow manages to be even shittier than the binding of isaac courtesy of edmund mcmilgen. In the piece of lava diarrhea dog dump game known as Overture there are a vast selection of over 24 classes to chose from, and they all fucking suck so much dick they're even shitter suck more fuck than shit dick cock ass fart octopus cunt fuck suck dick shit piss fuck shit suck fuck. There are bosses: Big Slime, Big Skeleton, Big fucker, Big fucking idiot moron. They have a move where they spawn a meteor and kill you. In this game you load in to the game to suck a big fat dick. For some reason this game has music that's way higher caliber than the game. I'm really bored right now so I'm just loading into the game to hear the music, realize the game is the most disgraceful piece of shit fuck suck retard dick ass pussy cunt fuck, close the game, and repeat. This game really doesn't deserve this music and I have no idea how they got someone to compose a whole score for this fuck ass game unless it was at gunpoint which it most definitely was. The only music this game deserves are 900-decibel diarrhea farts that make your ears bleed blaring extremely loudly into your headphones. This is quite definitely the worst game ever and if you play it you'll become a lobotomite like me, so run for the hills and never look back BEWARE
What a good bullet hell knows, and what Overture doesn't, is that bullets are only satisfying to dodge when you can see them. Overture's muddle of sprites, decals and graphical effects assault the senses and make it entirely too difficult to see what is happening. There's apparently a level-up system at play here, but you'll barely notice the gains as you find yourself dying, once again, at the hands of a threat that is barely legible.
The game apparently wants you to take your time when fighting, something at odds with the warp-speed movement and slippery controls. Your character's starting stats are nebulous to the point that they practically mean nothing. And they may as well, given that progress every run is so negligible and RNG-reliant.
RNG can be masterfully implemented when balanced, something Overture again fails to recognise. Do not be surprised to see levels spawn you right on top of enemy swarms, or to flat out refuse to drop loot for long stretches. Pray that two or more loot drops fall on top of one another too, as is the case with many boss items; let this happen and you've no chance, in the heat of battle or otherwise, of picking up the one you want.
There is the shell of a good game and a truly addictive loop in Overture, which is why I invested the hours I did. What a shame that the execution doesn't only fail to carry the concept, but actively works to ruin it.
Overture
pros:
fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on,
good amount of action and special effects,
cons:
alot of difficult battles.
You must unlock all characters before you can upgrade any character.
frequent mob storms.
alot of times can't see what's happening with too much action on screen.
good game.
Personal Suggested Purchase Price: $0.49 Or Less During Sale
This is probably the hardest game u will play. Its not worth 5$ wait until its 90% off minimal. It is terribly coded and although u can farm attack power u cant farm survival other than the levels u earn that reset each time u die. It took me around 52 hours to 100% steam beat this and get 10 stages on 4 different classes. There are a lot of different characters to use which is nice but holy hell they need to recode this it could be a great game if they fixed it.
This game feels unfinished. Way too many numbers popping up, the balance is quite bad. Every floor feels the same. The game is just bland and unfun to play. I will give 4/10 for it's low price. Only buy it if you like to grind then lose.
I had a hard time writing this review. On one hand, this game is frustrating, has some poor design choices, and despite it's easy controls, it is hard to play. That being said, on the other hand, this game is a sweet old school grind fest. The character classes are samey, but remain fun. The music is great, and it has a crisp graphical style. I will still recommend this game, but you will have some troubles with it's design choices, like the oversized damage indicators that take up WAY to much room, and the difficulty in seeing enemies during the more chaotic moments tthat will lead to cheap deaths. If these things aren't something you will worry about, then by all means pick this up and you will have fun.
This game looks really good but don't be fooled. It looks like an average twin stick shooter but what it is is something much worse. Here are the reasons why this game is only worth $0.50 or less.
Point 1: Controller compatibilty
This is point one cause its the most game breaking. Your usb controller cannot be used for it. You plug it in the option is there but it only functions as a means to attack, pickup items, and open your menu. You still need to use your mouse with it for aiming and movement. Why tease us with the idea that we can use a controller? If the option wasn't there and this game didn't look like a normal twin stick shooter it would be fine but the fact is it is a twin stick shooter that you have to play with 0 sticks!
Point 2: Characters/Upgrades
In most roguelikes its stanard for there to be multiple playable characters and permanent stat upgrades you can get and when you die you lose progress so that next time when you play again you can get further and feel like you still acomplished something. In order to get upgrades; nowever, you first have to unlock EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER. WHY? Just WHY? They all play 90% the same as each other the only variance that feels different is the special abilities and the special ability you will take is the one that A. Will put out the most damage or B. Will make you not get hit by clearing out the enemies. Other then that there are melee and ranged characters but the only difference is melee attack what your mouse is hovering while ranged attacks in the direction that your mouse is hovering. THAT'S IT! How can I be motivated to grind enough to unlock all these shitbags if they play exactly the same? The only thing I want is to buy upgrades so I can actually do better the next time and there is no logical reason why I should HAVE to buy every character first. Let the gamer decide what is worth buying and give us some free will.
Point 3: Execution
Honestly is the most average, run of the mill, twin stick shooter(that's what it is built to be) you will find. The game spams enemies and attacks at you and if u dodge enough you will win. Why force someone to aim when we can make them just spam special ability and spray and pray. Like literally don't spend time aiming unless you are 1 v 1 vs one of the bosses in which case rotate around the room slowly and shoot them and congrats you beat the boss.
Point 4: The Positives
This game can burn 1-3 hours of your life tops I trully believe. Its art style is good enough to make you think it would be good with colourful sprites and projectiles but holy if this game ain't busted and its gameply wears thin fast. The game has steam achievemnts to make it sell better but there are only 4 and you know what they are? Win as warrior, Win as thief, Win as mage, and Win as shaman. Brilliant you je baited me into buying this. The music is also good in this game but I'm pretty sure its not an original soundtrack and your better off with your ipod music or real video game music then this so average music but on the positive side of average.
In Conclusion
The games fair price is the $0.50 I paid for it anymore is ridiculous. Ther just isn't enough game here to enjoy and what is here to enjoy is drowned out by fake features and shallow gameplay. Even the random drops barely matter like now you have more mana so you can spam special move slightly more often. Buy Enter the Gundgeon or any good twin stick shooter this isn't worth your time. For the art and ok music I give it a 1 out of 10. DO NOT BUY unless you really will force yourself through this shit. I couldn't and I've beaten Dark Souls 1 and 2, Double Dragons 1-3, and many other frustrating games but I cant do it with this one.
The game has a good interface, simple and polished controls, it is quite entertaining to play it for a while, yes, but in the absence of unlockables you lose a little the desire to continue playing for much more, in games like for example Overture, is a game Very entertaining with simple controls and an even easier tutorial, but in Overture there is something missing, something that at this time must be present in almost all games, at this time, the minds of young people are dominated by the Internet And everything that surrounds this means, therefore, what would be Overture would be nothing more and nothing less than the multiplayer, this makes interaction more fun with the game, being able to compete with your friends to see who kills more enemies, who improves More weapons and who can pass the level faster, placing achievements so that the players are committed to complete them all. That's something that could be improved, this game could have a great future, if the designers think that it should have,
This game is alright for this price. It was annoying to see my Stats got wiped out after an update, and I had to unlock every charakter again.
I was confused when I read: "You have to unlock all 24 chars to Upgrade"
Then I was like, fuck it. After 1 hour of rushing. I actually liked the fact that I had to unlock first, else I wouldve never known that some mages are fast or that some rogues are hybrid tanks.
Decend original price, Amazing on a sale.
Very disappointed with this game. Screen size is so small, and there's no way to change resolution or "zoom out" to make viewing window bigger; which you really need to be able to do considering the massive spawn rates of enemies you can encounter (which you won't see, since they're off-screen). Gameplay is fun, but die once, and you get to start over. No worries though, you can upgrade your character. But only after you've unlocked all 24 of them; then you can go back and upgrade the 1 that you wanted to in the first place. (And racking up 2000 gold per character for unlock fees take's quite a while. After an hour (ish) of playing, I've unlocked 13 characters. Never beat the Level 1 boss. Highest character level was 8.
Too many little things added up and got in the way. I don't recommend this game. And I only paid $0.50 for it during a sale... I want to like it. It has potential. Just not in its current form.
Has an add pop up for Dungeon Souls within the first few minutes of playing. Not what I expect from a pc game on Steam. Leave this kind of shit on mobile gaming.
I liked the old version because it has the sensation of "just one more round" and now I feel more like:
Do I really have to unlock them all first before upgrading?
Is this another thing Devs do to try as hard as possible to get more playtime out of it?
Why the hell are there ads for other games they made?
Do they really need more attention on twitter?
I first played this game before the 4.0.4 update, when the grinding method was still working.
That was when I was able to finish the game and get one of the achievements, with something like 3~4 hours of gameplay, and of course, lots of grinding.
Did beat the game make me feel accomplished?
Really not! It feels like I wasted my fu#%@ng time.
But at least the game COULD be beaten.
But after the patch, all my characters are locked again, and in order to even upgrade the default one (one for each class), you got to buy ALL of the characters.
AND...the grind bug/method is gone, which means I won't be able to beat the game anymore, because it's unfair and bad designed.
So, if you're thinking about buying it, listen to Olde, who wrote a guide for this game and have some wise words: "I have one important piece of advice, however. Don't bother beating this game. I know the achievements are tempting, but the payoff is so minimal that it's really not worth your time. The game is only designed to be unfair against you"
I wish I'd seen that before I had bought this game.
Pros:
- Randomly generated levels
- Cheap
- Controller support
- Twin-stick shooter
Cons:
- Too much clutter
- Minibosses can spawn on top of you
- Bosses kill you instantly
- Sold in a 4-pack when there's no co-op
Overall, I would say this is a 5/10 game, but I would pick "maybe" if I could.
So I quite honestly didn't expect much from this game. I definitely didn't expect to have a blast (in short but fun bursts). There are many characters to choose from and unlock making the game very replayable. Once you find a class and sub-class that you really click with the game becomes addicting. It's a lot like Dungeon Siege or Nuclear throne but with lootable weapons, armor, talismans etc.. that change your stats accordingly making it an even deeper experience than those titles. Great timekiller and defiinitely worth your time and money.

I don't normally write reviews before I've had a ton more hours on a game..
But I feel like the other reviewers aren't explaining the game quite right.
(We all have our own opinions)
Yes, this is a very hard game to beat.
If you're a completionist I wouldn't recommend this.
If you can play it casually then this game is great to pick up.
You open the game, play your fav class, die after the first boss, close the game, open game after a few hours
(repeat)
I got this game cuz I wanted to kill monsters with magic and pick up piles and piles of gold.
Just for the sadisfaction of it. Because the way picking up gold is animated, is very satisfying.
(though it could use more sound)
For the people who say it's too chaotic, and it's too hard to see what kills you:
You can turn the particles down and turn off the screen shake in the options.
(Helps a LOT)
Then you just gotta do a lot of kiting to deal with the mobs.
You can't just charge in swinging your weapon like a madman and think you'll live lol
You actually have to dodge things, and not just hold down the attack button, cuz that can make it hard to see.
I got this game for 50cents. Worth it? Definitely. 5$? Prob not.
It goes on sale for over 80% off pretty often, so pick it up when it does, if it seems interesting to you.
Around 1% of the people who bought this game have actually beat it. I am the 99%.
On the one hand, the core of Overture's slash-em-up fantasy bullet hell gameplay (with a great soundtrack to boot) is incredibly addicting. Heck, I'll probably go back to playing it after I finish this review. On the other hand, there's not much else to it. The level are all randomly generated squares where the enemies slowly rush you. The bosses (all of which are simply scaled-up versions of normal enemies) all require exactly the same strategy: kiting in an extremely confined space. The upgrade system is one-dimensional and gets very expensive very fast. Some of the classes are unique and fun, but others are only slight variations on other classes and many are simply not viable if you want to get anywhere in the game.
If you buy this game, you'll probably have a few hours of fun with it. I did. But as you play more and more that feeling that you'll never get beyond the first three floors and are stuck grinding more infinitesimal stat increases that you know, deep down, will never give you the edge to win the game, gradually eats the fun out of the experience.
So, how would I improve Overture?
-Better boss designs that required more dynamic strategies and larger, more varied boss rooms (perhaps with traps?)
-More coherent enemies and map combinations to combat the utter randomness. Being rushed by armies of skeletons, spiders, oozes, yetis, ogres, necromancers AND minotaurs in a single level is ridiculous and completely immersion-breaking, especially when the game has several clear map themes (forest, dungeon, lava, etc.)
-More varied enemy behavior and skills, especially for melee enemies
-Permanent stat increases beyond attack power (health, mana, etc)
-Stat and mechanical improvements for the game's less viable classes (Knight, Invoker, Bandit, etc.)
"Roguelike" was never intended to mean "unbalanced."
Game graphics are so poor that it's almost impossible to differentiate between gameplay elements. This leads to setting off monster-spawning traps that kill you immediately because they spawn directly on top of your player. It leads to monster projectiles you cannot see to avoid, thus causing death. It leads to loading into a level with monsters already swarming the entrance. The first boss is overtuned for the beginning of the game and creates a situation where you must get lucky with the random item drops to defeat it.
The class upgrades need more meaning (such as added hp, defense, etc). The incremental price increase smacks of lazy development.
This game isn't worth even the $4.99 price tag.
What is it: a generic roguelike with a focus on grinding and some very, very small RPG elements.
Goal: go over 10 floors populated by slight variation of types of enemies and end-of-floor bosses to win.
Pros:
+ Game mechanics are very simple to learn
+ You can spend a few minutes/hours mindlessly killing your time.
Cons:
- The game has zero depth
- Looks apparently impossible but is actually extremely simple after learning two tricks
- After that, it becomes a long, tedious journey keeping the left mouse button (attack) clicked all the time.
- Graphics are very generic
- Monsters can spawn and stay out of the boundaries of the level
- When you win, you are rewarded by a ``victory'' writing enclosed in a square. Really.
At the beginning the game looks very challenging because thousands of enemies come to you and you die very quickly. It looks like the only purpose of the game is you accumulating ``money'' to invest in better characters. However, after you realize that leveling up makes you way stronger than investing money in your character, you can just obtain the right objects to level up fast and grind your way through the floors.
It does not help that, every time you save, you lose your progress on the current floor and have to kill all the enemies again, but keep your level. Thus, you can actually trick the game and become insanely powerful just by loading, killing monsters for a while, saving, starting killing monsters again.
I spent several hours on this while thinking about something else, just for the sake of beating it. So I guess the joke's on me.
I don't really know what it is about this game, but I keep coming back to it. The 24 classes are pretty fun and varied. I went through them all to find my favorites and now it's just about upgrading the ones I really like. The game could be deeper in terms of like upgrades and progression and the like, but I'm not really complaining. Theoretically speaking, you could upgrade a character enough to eventually beat the game, but barring that, I don't know that I'll ever be good enough to beat it. But I'm fine with that, because just playing it in general is fun. I think half of the enjoyment I get is from the awesome soundtrack. I bought the OST almost instantly because I love it so much. Anyway, I've gotten more than my money's worth from this game, so that's good enough for a recommendation from me.
Firstly, I am not a huge PC gamer. I don't play rogue-likes nor even really understand what that even means, to be brutally honest.
However, it's hard to not fall in love with Overture. There are so many different classes that offer a lot of variety in how you approach the game. The music and sounds are fantastic. The gameplay itself is smooth, fast-paced, rewarding, and frustrating (in a good way).
With that said, the game obviously has some kinks to iron out still (at least, I hope). Difficult games are a thing of the past, and I enjoy the difficulty of this one. The bosses are near impossible... They can hit you, slow you down, and kill you within seconds. It's often not fair, but you can go back for revenge a thousand times over. What I don't like is that loots can spill and spawn into poison swamps or large spike pits. What's the point, really?
Another complaint might be that the difficulty scrolls upwards so incredibly quickly. Floor 1-1 is simple to navigate and make through alive with any class, but to beat the boss and do anything below that floor takes more luck than skill. The blood and whatnot that enemies leave disguise spike traps and other traps on the floor. That isn't real difficulty, that's just being annoying -- and I hope it gets fixed.
I would also like to see more statistics become upgradable in the game. I have one class at Tier 10, and I find the advantage minimal at best. I don't know if armor or items really make that big of a difference, which makes the loot and upgrade system feel a little empty -- which is a huge problem. After playing this game for X number of hours you begin to realize that the developers don't really want to reward you for playing the game, they just want to make it impossible to navigate. It's a little frustrating... Because again, what is the point?
Why have armor when it does nothing? Why collect gold beyond unlocking all of the classes because it feels like it does nothing? Why grind out levels and xp when it does NOTHING. Developers biggest issue is making the game, the items, and the grind feel like it matters... Feel like it all is worth it because your character will kick major ass. That is lacking right now.
Overall, I wish there was more to do with collected gold and the game keeps track of scrolls for some reason I don't understand yet. It's a fun game that you can sink a few hours into, but right now it's nothing to get too serious about. It's worth the $4 or $5 dollars though.
