NetHack
Nethack is the most celebrated member of the ancient and honorable family of games descended from Rogue and hence known as “roguelike”: bare-bones ASCII-graphics adventures set in randomly generated dungeons, in which the player fights monsters and collects items until he or she dies.
Vulture
Vulture for NetHack in an isometric graphical interface for the roguelike engine: NetHack. Wrapping the original ASCII text dungeons of NetHack, Vulture brings this great game into the graphical point and click world while still preserving the original keyboard commands for those wishing to play as it was intended.
The adventure
Recently, you have begun to find yourself unfulfilled and distant in your daily occupation. Strange dreams of prospecting, stealing, crusading, and combat have haunted you in your sleep for many months, but you aren't sure of the reason. You wonder whether you have in fact been having those dreams all your life, and somehow managed to forget about them until now. Some nights you awaken suddenly and cry out, terrified at the vivid recollection of the strange and powerful creatures that seem to be lurking behind every corner of the dungeon in your dream. Could these details haunting your dreams be real? As each night passes, you feel the desire to enter the mysterious caverns near the ruins grow stronger. Each morning, however, you quickly put the idea out of your head as you recall the tales of those who entered the caverns before you and did not return. Eventually you can resist the yearning to seek out the fantastic place in your dreams no longer. After all, when other adventurers came back this way after spending time in the caverns, they usually seemed better off than when they passed through the first time. And who was to say that all of those who did not return had not just kept going?
Asking around, you hear about a bauble, called the Amulet of Yendor by some, which, if you can find it, will bring you great wealth. One legend you were told even mentioned that the one who finds the amulet will be granted immortality by the gods. The amulet is rumored to be somewhere beyond the Valley of Gehennom, deep within the Mazes of Menace. Upon hearing the legends, you immediately realize that there is some profound and undiscovered reason that you are to descend into the caverns and seek out that amulet of which they spoke. Even if the rumors of the amulet's powers are untrue, you decide that you should at least be able to sell the tales of your adventures to the local minstrels for a tidy sum, especially if you encounter any of the terrifying and magical creatures of your dreams along the way. You spend one last night fortifying yourself at the local inn, becoming more and more depressed as you watch the odds of your success being posted on the inn's walls getting lower and lower.
In the morning you awake, collect your belongings, and set off for the dungeon. After several days of uneventful travel, you see the ancient ruins that mark the entrance to the Mazes of Menace. It is late at night, so you make camp at the entrance and spend the night sleeping under the open skies. In the morning, you gather your gear, eat what may be your last meal outside, and enter the dungeon...

Nethack is the oldest, hardest, and most valuable game I've ever played. You can think of it like a DnD session with the computer being your DM, while you are the lone party member. Your objective is always the same, but the means in which you get there, as well as the various obstacles stopping you, vary dramatically across different playthroughs.
Please note that what you are paying for is a third-party mod for Nethack that applies various UI and QoL changes to the game. You can download the original Nethack for free from their website, or you can play online on your browser, also for free. Purchasing this product provides a ready-to-play instance of Nethack with all of its add-ons prepared to launch at the click of the play button.
I've been getting into NetHack for a while now, but the original version's bare-bones visuals and cumbersome use of keyboard commands makes even the simplest of play sessions take a long time and feel more like work than play.
Vulture goes a long way toward fixing that complaint. I feel more engaged with the game when playing this version thanks to it having actual graphics and sound, and the gameplay feels less like work and more like play thanks to the ability to use the mouse and contextual menus for so many actions.
It's not perfect, and you'll almost certainly still need to consult the wiki a lot, but so far this is the most accessible way I've found to experience NetHack.
After performing the invocation ritual, there are so many bugs on the last floor of this game. It just keeps crashing is nearly unplayable. It also crashed at the castle without having a backup to restore. However, I found the save file and it had a .e extension i removed the .e and the game reloaded to the castle. I'm not sure if the castle crash is spawning so much issue with the final floor.
Since that save file seems to be there forever I am now back down to the vibrating square on what is like a 2nd or 3rd life and each time the final floor is bugged in so many ways.
My pets vanished and I cant enter as a Vamp Lord, now I cant even enter as a human.
The steam version I had to purchase and it has more bugs than the old free game that worked flawlessly. Quite disappointing to have this right at the end.
It's one of the best ways to play the best game of all time. The graphics, audio, and quality of life features are all well worth the price—that said, NetHack is of course free to play standalone or with other open source programs; however, if you aren't used to roguelikes or MUDs or other games played in a terminal, I would actually recommend buying Vulture before trying to compile NetHack yourself—reason being, the graphical interface and point-and-click controls vastly improve NetHack's learning curve, making shortcut memorization a matter of convenience rather than one of necessity.
I'm 22 now, and Vulture's Eye is how my dad introduced me to 3.4.3 back when I was only 5 or 6. I've been hooked on NetHack since.
I'd also like to use this review to let people know that the old Android port of NetHack is still maintained on Github, despite the Play Store release being broken. You can find it by googling "gurrhack". Like Vulture, I consider Gurrhack to have been an instrumental part of my childhood and of the development of my NetHack addiction.
Finally, Vulture's Steam release also comes with Vulture for Slash'EM and Vulture for UnNetHack (the single most influential NetHack derivative and a strong contender for the second, respectively). I wouldn't recommend trying either out until you've ascended a few characters in NetHack and are really looking for the extra chaos and change of pace, but Vulture's support for the two does increase Vulture's already astronomical value.
