Cliffhanger Productions-remember the name and avoid it.
They abandoned this title in 2018, then released Jagged Alliance: Rage in 2019 under a publisher. Very definition of take the money and run. Don't waste your money on this garbage developer; go purchase Wasteland 2 or 3 by inXile if you want a turn-based spec op tactic game with a solid developer behind it.
Game doesn`t even start. Servers are down. WASTE OF MONEY, DON`T BUY!!!!!!!!!!
Game wasn't even good, not bad either but far away to even be considered good.
They closed the servers back in November 2018.
They won't make the game run offline, proves how incompetent they are and that's a fact.
Verdict: Don't ever buy again from them (again), just don't, they don't deserve your money if they're just to end up being a bunch of worthless incompetents good at nothing but screwing over people.
This game was already a joke to the series, now that the servers are gone, it's even more than just a bad joke.
I won't ever buy a game from them again and so you shouldn't either until they decide to be competent, starting by adding an offline mode to this game, yeah yeah they'll have to do some stuff over again, their problem, not ours, if they're too incompetent and greedy to do it, that is their problem, they should have done it the right way right from the start, but coming from some idiotic incompetents, it's to be excepted isn't?
WARNING: do not buy this game. The servers closed on Nov 30th, 2018 and the game can't be played offline. It had a nice campaign, but nothing works anymore
I bought this game due to some nostalgic feelings. However I am deeply disappointed. I started to play the first tutorials and it seemed like the game had potential. Then I started the first missions and the aiming behaviour and line of sight is ridiculous. Sometimes you stand at point blank range to an opponent and have 0% hit chance while he can easily hit you. In some other occasions you cannot see an opponent that is 2 fields away even though there is no object blocking.
It is sad as I loved the old JA, Commandos, Xcom, etc. But this game is a total failure.
The only goal of the game is grinding money. You get a few thousands from mission and need tens of thousands for every item. Combat system and equipment are both extremely simplified - no CQC, it's hard to tell when you have been detected during your turn. Equipment: there is only weapon, armour, helmet and medkits, no grenades, melee weapons or any utils.
First few hours is fun, but it quickly becomes extremely boring and highly repetitive.
I have 117 hours on the Steam Edition (discontinued), so disregard my .4 hours for this game. I only bought it because it was on sale and I wasn't really liking the idea of playing from the discontinued version, despite it not actually being any kind of issue.
On the plus side, all of my Steam Edition stuff carried over; if you own the Steam Edition and have been thinking about getting this copy as well, do it. Right now for $2.50 + ($.74x4) you can have all 4 of the perm mercs; if you already had them with the Steam Edition, you will get them again. This is great on paper, but be prepared to powergrind for cash/mats to kit them out. ;)
Also, any Achievements you have will transfer between the two titles, so there's that if you're looking to pad your cheev stats a little.
If you've played the older JA games, don't expect this to be anywhere near them. It's quite lacking in a side-by-side comparison.
The character development is somewhat lacking, as you only have a handful of physical stats and weapon skills (each with their own skill point pools to spend from as the merc levels).
The gear is somewhat awkward.
- Head/Body to be equipped with Light or Heavy armor; there is no middleground and you're more or less forced to spec into one or the other.
- Weapon 1&2; you have 2 slots that can each hold any weapon of your choosing, but with the limited merc class:weapon skill setup, you will likely end up going with archetypical stuff (sniper mercs will have sniper/pistol, scouts will have rifle/shotgun, etc).
- 3 Ammo Belt slots; this is where you put your actively-used ammo for the weapon(s) you carry in battle. Generally, 1 box of ammo per weapon + 1 special ammo type for whichever weapon you prefer (AP for your close range, perhaps)
- 3 Hip Belt slots; this is where you put your consumables such as medkits, injection kits, energy drinks, etc.
- 6 Backpack slots; you can carry additional weapons, ammo and consumables here and transfer them to the appropriate slots during a mission. This is also where you will usually place the loot you pick up during missions (unless you equip them in their corresponding slots, of course).
-- None of these categorized slots can be upgraded to expand their capacity, unfortunately.
Further, the weapon/armor crafting becomes somewhat tedious. It isn't /terrible/ but it's very farm-grindy. Do handfuls of missions to get a couple hundred thousand dollars, then spend $30k+ to do the crafting itself (for 1 item), +thousands of dollars more for 'insurance' to keep your components from breaking on failure, and even more $ on the crafting kits needed to actually craft anything to begin with. Failure results in loss of money and components (unless 'insured'), so this results in a potentialy COSTLY experience. Just for a singular item.
You can both farm and purchase nearly every component needed, but eventually at higher levels you'll generally have to buy a small crate of each item, then craft a number of those items together to up-tier it to a better 'quality', then craft a number of /those/ up-tiered components to make even better ones.
Then you take the required components and craft-combine them with "craftable"-flagged weapons/armor to advance said weapon/armor to its next state. When you max out at L50, you'll pretty much end up with a bottlenecked set of gear you can modify, and that will usually only have 1-2 different craftable options (based on components used).
It could be so much better than it is now, but even now it's so much better than the trainwreck garbage it used to be years ago.
Your headquarters is where you will be able to hire mercs and buy/sell gear. There's an on-site 'hospital' and mechanic shop, both of which can be upgraded by gathering the proper resources + $. These upgrades will add passive bonii (different upgrades boost different stats) to mercs' stats, or add storage space for armor/weapons/ammo/consumables.
While this is a neat-o thing to help further enhance the already-limited mercs, it does add quite a bit of grinding to the game.
I won't get into the missions, mainly because it's been so long since I've gone through all of them; however, they were all generally interesting and had a decent amount of replayability. Some more than others, some not at all; many will be forgotten while others will be required to farm along the way for cash/components/resources ('Back to the Roots' to get TREE SAP <--- This will be your endgame grind for a while)
There's also Warzones and PvP, which I didn't personally do any of. A few warzones here and there to see what it was about, but never any PvP.
Overall, I'd say it's worth any JA fan to at least look into. However, I would not suggest getting hyped about it being anything near what JA2 or JA:BiA was (BiA was real-time garbage; but that's a whole different review). It does a much better job than the recently 'revisioned' JA game.. "Flaming Pile Of Wet Fart Garbage" was its title, I think? Anyhow, it's not a nightmare like that failsauce, but it's nowhere near the originals.
Absolutely brilliant: is how I would describe this game. I played the JA of old and loved them I’m glad to see this fabulous game available today. It’s little different from its predecessors, but maintains their charm. I've played this game for a few days now and have enjoyed every moment. Easy learning curve and the short-ish (how I like it) missions go on and on; similar to the first JA which many others and I fell in love with - and when you're ready you can PvP! The community seems very friendly. I like the purchasing of equipment and bullets and other merc management things you can do. You should buy this game ;)
I tried JA:Online when it first came out, whenever that was, and a lot about it was bad. I played for a few hours and decided it was another dead-on-arrival JA game. But... as so rarely happens, the devs fixed the game!
No longer do you need to register for an account on some random website, no longer do you need to spend real $ in-game -- in fact, you don't need to spend any money past the purchase price, at all!
The game itself is impressively well done. It's different than JA2, but in a lot of good ways. The interface feels smoother, the graphics are relatively sharp. I've only put in about 30 hours as I write this review - but I found myself instantly hooked as soon as I started playing.
The Good:
- Smooth interface is pleasant to interact with
- Gun shop and mercenary hiring interface is intuitive and looks modern
- Lots of guns
- Same turn based action you loved in other JA games
- A lot of original voice and sound samples from JA2
- Upgradable base
- No magic
- Real gun names
- The over-the-top stereotypical expressions from mercs
- LOTS of different types of missions, with different objectives
- Every level or two something new opens up in the game
- Pretty good looting, lots of usable items not just garbage
- Game is challenging, but relatively forgiving
- Replay value to hit all mission bonuses
- Some missions have multiple ways to achieve the objective
- Online PvP - have yet to actually test this, though
- No way to save in case you fuck up, forces more planning
The bad:
- No way to save in case you fuck up, limits creativity
- Click and drop system gets old fast when adding mercs to missions every time
- No one online for PvP but I only tried a few times so far
- Not as much humor as JA2
- No real gamplay options, such as basics like scrolling sreen with mouse
- Not enough cover - sometimes you just have to get shot at, which sucks
- No grenades or mines
- Very limited destructable environment
- Enemies make weird, jerky movements prior to shooting
[*] No prone position
Overall, like someone else said in another review - this is hands down the best JA iteration since JA2 - and for $10 it's a total no-brainer for anyone who enjoyed the older JA games. It's fun, it's addictive and it feels good.
If you'd never played the JA series before, it's an awesome - semi-realistic, break from magic and dragons. If you're played the new Shadowrun series, this feels similar, but I would even say a bit more streamlined.
Excited to see what else the game has in store, many more hours to come and the ($ spent / hour of entertainment value) ratio is strong!
I recommend the singleplayer experience of this game. Multiplayer is almost completely abandoned (or at least I haven't run into anyone since I bought it last week). Apart from that, the game is really good. I played it back when it was free to play, but got turned off by pay walls and stuff, now that the game is buy to play, it seems people aren't interested that much, which is a pity.
Overall, I think this game would be a hidden gem if it had at least somewhat of a community. This way, it's a rough precious stone, buried deep in the caves, but who knows, maybe it gets to see the surface one day.
Tried to like this game but it's pointless. Owing to the low money you get for missions, you can't equip all of your team with decent equipment. Subsequently later levels become an exercise in frustration. Only rarely, after repeadtedly redoing earlier levels, did I ever manage to get some decent equipment, but no extra cash (in game). Can't even afford medical equipment much less decent weapons and body armor.
Not that it matters, no matter what I do, my mercs are instaintly overwhelmed and cut to peices within three-five turns. Repeated requests to fix the imbalances have been ignored such substantially lower the prices in the store and increaseing the rewards would help. Most other games your characters can use things like explosives and knives, but they seem to be unable to add those items here.
So unless you enjoy hour after hour of frustration and tedium, avoid this game. And hope that one day soon someone will finally make a truly great new Jagged Alliance game.
Game is OK, but... the bigest problem with it is that it does not live up to original title. And I am not talking about graphics or physics, but really balancing a game. some of example that are really anoying are:
you can only see (and) shoot a person with sniper rifle from distance of some 20 meters. So you shoot ar a person in the head and most likely that person will run into you and shoot with machinegun. there is 0% chance to hit with a rifle if a person is cjust next to you. No grenades. No knifes. Lack of logic in general behavior.
In short it is missing some core components that made Jagged Alliance a great game of that time.
I will still recomend it for people who did not play original.
JA Reloaded got a lot of negative feedback mainly due to a couple of things. One is the name Jagged Alliance because it makes you compare it to JA2. The Gameplay might not be nearly as deep as JA2 but it is good enough on its own to make the game worth playing. The other thing is the connection problem it had on launch. The connection issue has been fixed and while fixing it the devs tried to explain what is going on and not hiding and stay silent which was very nice.
At this point I'm 14 hours in and there is a huge amount of content I have not yet seen so the below is based on the missions I've played so far.
The gameplay cannot compare in complexity with JA2 and it is not something revolutionary which doesn't mean it is not worth the price. There are plenty of missions in variety of locations. Each mission is divided in several sub-missions. The level design is not allowing approaching the target location from multiple directions as in JA2 . In some levels you can use alternative routes and that's about it. The gameplay focuses on utilizing the different character classes and using the environment (cover, explosive tanks) to your advantage. The mercenary classes are not that strict and you can put the points you get wherever you like. For instance it is wise your sniper character to get a few points in a short range weapon like pistol, shotgun or smg since the sniper rifle is not effective at short ranges and if enemies get close you will need a short range weapon. In general you need team which consists of different classes that complement each other. Till now I've encountered one boss battle so there are bosses too. The variety of weapons and armor is quite nice.
There is a light base management part in which you can upgrade your storage and clinic but it only consist of upgrading the building when you have met the requirements. There is also multiplayer although since the player base is not very big you first need to ask in global chat if someone wants PvP so you can setup the match.
There are some things that I find oddly missing from this type of game: no grenades, no hand to hand combat, no melee weapons which means that stealth is useful only for taking better position and setting ambushes, You cannot move the camera so sometimes is hard to click at the place where you want your character to move. These are the things I find the game is lacking.
JA reloaded might be not that complex(something a lot of tactical tuned based fans are looking for) but the action oriented gameplay creates a fun and fast paced experience.
I was nostalgic about JA2 so I tried it out.
I don't care much for PvP (I'm likely a tiny minority here) so just wanted to try single player and get back into turn-based shooting carnage.
And I did enjoy it! The details and variety of the mercs, weapons, armour and crafting options was cool. I like to do a bit of micromanaging anyway. Of course, there's no grand strategy mechanics like in JA2 - just playing bland missions after another. It's a good way to kill time while I'm rendering my videos.
Genre - Turn based squad combat
I was never a massive player of the orignal Jagged Alliance games, but got quite into the online version and enjoy these type of games.
They have now released a one off payment version of the same game with added achievements etc. As the price was quite reasonable I thought I'd give it another go. It kept all my progress, which is handy and I have been able to play a couple of missions. The game plays the same as the online version without pesky micro-transactions. You unlock missions across the map as your mercs progress and can upgrade their weapons/armour/ammo with those you buy or find. You also have a mini-base to upgrade, if that takes your fancy.
It is a fun turn based game and although there are some limitations like no higher ground or explosions. The combat is still enjoyable and now it can't be accused of being P2W. Although I think they would be silly not to offer some mercs as permanent DLC. Luckily I was able to carry two of mine across already.
At a price of £5-£6 I think you should definately get your monies worth for a casual turn based combat game. The developers also appear to be fairly active and hope they will continue to support it. There is also a multiplayer mode if you want to fight other pesky humans,
However, I have been told it is isn't the best JA game, so you will have to ask a real fanboy for that.
A fun game that gets increasingly challenging (and a little less linear) as you progress. For long-time Jagged Alliance fans, this is more similar to JA: Deadly Games than JA1 or JA2 due to it's mission based approach. If you buy this expecting an open world, RPG/Strategy game like the classic JA2, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a well made turn-based strategy game, then JA Online Reloaded might be exactly what you are looking for. Just give it time because the difficulty of the missions, and the quality of the AI, improves after the first dozen or so missions.
I also want to quickly say how impressed I have been by the responsiveness of the developers. There was a major issue on launch day that prevented me from playing the game. A developer responded to my query within 30 seconds of asking it and they worked through the night (on a weekend) to fix it.
I liked orignal JA series and i now its not suposed to be JA 2.0 or anything but game is seriously lacking. Played only few first missions but ... where are my grenades and other explosives ? where is CQC ? Stealth system is very basic and tactical options for missions are very limited. VSS Vintorez (Buns premium equipment) is VERY loud .... thing got integral silencer but noooooo big a@@ red ring with every shot. Ok granted is cheap enough and you can get few hours entertainment out of it. PVE missions are wierd ... merc outfit chasing cheating husbands and biker gangs ? Dark alternative universe or what ? I dont want my money back but i am saddened :(
Loading issue seems to be fixed, still wouldn't recommend it.
Between this and SRC, both of their games, I would say SRC is better, but both seem lacking. They don't really live up to the names behind them...
To put it simply they failed to heed this advice:
Never half-ass two things whole-ass one thing.
-Ron Swansons
There are little things like not being able to rotate the camara so when there is shit in the way it's hard to postion your mercs and the boundries for max movemnet like to fade away...
And then there appears to be a huge problem with how low income is in this game is. Maybe I'm doing something horribly wrong but it seems like it's impossible to get enough money to equip more than one merc with good gear. You get like 1k or 2k for indivudal missions, the price of things such as a single med pack is 2.6k and leveling a merc is around 1k at this reward level.
Then you get around 10k the price of one good peice of equipment for completing a contract...
So by the time I finish a contract I can get 1 weapon or 1 piece of armor for one merc and by the time I complete the next contract that gear is shit and needs to be upgraded...
Can't recommend in its current buggy state. Most of the time, the game gets stuck in the initial loading screen. On the rare occasions when it starts, the game frequently loses connection (even during single player campaign) kicking you back to the desktop.
So far so good. I'm having a lot of fun. I am not into p2w titles so much prefer buying and owning the game and all content with no paywalls or microtransactions.
To me it is well worth the money. Is it JA 2 with patch 1.13? No, but it is still fun.
It has moderate base building, so far the story mode and combat has been entertaining. I am not sure how pvp works at the end game, but if it takes 60 hours to get to it, and I don't enjoy the end game, getting to it and having fun is still a great deal for $10, or 8.50.
In my opinion there's no reason to buy the original "F2P" version of this. It's like twice the content for half the price. I got my company back from when I tried the f2p version, kept all my campaign progress.
Seems a little buggy atm, might just be my laptop. Got most of the way through a campaign mission and the end turn button bugged out. Still had alot of fun though. Good tactical combat, can build stealth characters, combat is similar to that XCom feel. You've got cover, line of sight, spending extra action points to aim, level system, gear customization.
It's been a long time since I played this. My sniper had some pretty sweet special gear I think I got from some side missions. I think it's kind of cool that she's got gear that provides next to no defense but gives her lots of crit chance and some percision to help aim.
I dont remember what the economy was like in this game, but they said they rebalanced it to feel less grindy. I'm really glad they did this, but one thing I'm confused as to why they kept it in the game was that you have to pay upkeep to refresh your contracts with people you've hired. Your main character is free forever but I had to pay a little to refresh my contracts with my old sidekicks. Thankfully I already had enough to re hire them. I think it would be better to just have a base price to hire people rather than having to renew their contracts, it's not all that expensive but I think it's kind of annoying to have to keep money for that. But as for everything else, I definately think there's alot less grind for gear. Plus there's that dank side mission reward stuff.
I'm an absolute sucker for this kind of game. I love tactical combat RPGs. If you like strategy games, tactical shooters, squad based RPGs or any combination of the 3, you'll like this game.
NOTE TO THE DEVS: I love that you put this game into one package rather than having its old F2P stuff, but there's still some things that make it feel like a F2P game, such as renewing contracts and whatnot. Base upgrades, Im not sure how I feel about yet, but I guess having some sort of base progression could be nice. I'll update my reveiw upon playing this version more.
