This JRPG that reminds me of the Ultima series, the strategy and complexity of the systems working in the background really impressed me. I've been having a lot of fun with it, and fortunately there is an English translation pack that makes this accessible outside of Japan. Recommend! See my video below for gameplay at the beginning of the game:

Steamdeck can run this game, but there are two problems: 1. when play music it will hang when music switch to the next one, disable the music will "solve" this hang problem; 2. Steamdeck can not switch between multiple windows(has some issue) and it has poor experiences when some windows size displayed improperly.

The game runs good under desktop mode on Steamdeck, that's awesome!

An amazing little truly open ended open world rpg. If you love open world rpgs but are kinda turned off by story telling mumbo jumbo, and just want to be an adventurer in a dynamic world who makes their own story, this is the game for you. Super relaxing and laid back. Peak comfy. The graphics may put you off, they don't for me, but if you're a zoomer addicted to 20 something pastel goths acting like freaks on tik tok live, this may not work for you.

I've only made one run so far, but even with only an hour under it's belt I can tell ルナティックドーン 前途への道標 is a unique and fascinating game with plenty to offer. This is essentially a completely open-ended RPG sandbox, I don't know if there's any kind of deep lore or overarching goal, or if it's simply a little world to jump into whenever you feel like it. In a lot of ways it feels like a Japanese take on a western CRPG right down to the aesthetics. The game seems to be centered around various towns you can move between as you please, and these towns have your typical shops, hotels, quest-givers and even dungeons contained within. A quest might ask you to deliver an item to someone in another village or kill enemies in a certain dungeon and once you figure out how the towns are structred it's fairly easy to figure out what to do. I finished a fetch quest fairly easily, then took on an extermination mission, won a couple battles, then promptly ran into a fire trap and lost my healer, only to lose myself to an elaborate trap not long after I stupidly attacked one of my own guys.

When I say open-ended I do mean open ended. It seems you can do just about anything and the game won't stop you from doing something completely stupid. Want to attack one of your own party members in battle? You can! Want to heal enemies? You can! The interface is certainly.... rustic, owing to the game's window's 95 origins, but once you figure out which menu contains what command, it's not too hard to figure out how to interact with the world, and there's even a helpful built-in Windows 95 style help system that even seems to open the appropriate entry at times (for example, when I had my first combat encounter it opened up to the combat section when I clicked on it). The game also doesn't hold your hand on which missions you can and can't take, and will throw easy and hard ones at you in equal measure. What I love is that you can actually ask your party's opinion about a given mission before taking it which is how you gauge if you should even try it. It's a cool mechanic that makes the difficulty feel diegetic. What's also interesting is that it's not just the likelihood of success they'll tell you about, but also their own personal interest or even moral stance on a particular job. I imagine managing moods will become more a part of the game if you get deeper in, but right now I'm just trying not to die.

The music and visuals are all charming and the few towns I stopped by seem to have a lot of character. This is a game wehre you have to use your imagination, so while you won't get elaborate cutscenes the theater of the mind gives you plenty with quest descriptions and conversations. One problem you will run into is that being a windows-form-based game, the graphics don't scale at all, meaning everything will be extremely tiny on a high-resolution monitor. The only way I can think to get around this is to either set your windows display scaling high, or run at a lower resolution for the time being. Or if you're truly into the Sigma Trillionaire grindset you can just play with everything tiny and fight through the eye strain. Another potential graphical issue is that movement through dungeons seems to be very fast when driven by mouse, I'm not sure if that's controlled by framerate but time will tell how much of a problem this is.

The other thing to be aware of is that this game only comes Japanese, though there is an English patch available. I didn't use the patch because I wanted to become a true trillionaire and learn one of the hardest languages in the world so I could promptly lose my eyesight straining to see extremely tiny Kanji on my 1440p screen, but the option is there for the sane among us.

I've only touched the surface of the game, but considering I usually don't even like oldschool RPG's and I'm having a fun time with this, I think it's something I'll be coming to a fair bit, the potential for emergent storytelling is clearly high and the disaster of my first run was already pretty memorable. If you don't mind digging deep I think you'll find a nice little gem here.

I love this fucking game so much, and I wish the others in the series were translated.

ArtDink was a pioneer in experimental gameplay, and Lunatic Dawn PoTB is a marvelous little thing. Best I can describe it - it's a fantasy JRPG world simulator with dungeon crawling elements. The game world continues to spin even after your chosen main character dies. Continue your adventure as one of your party members - bang your ex-hero's wife/husband. Settle down. Die of old age. Stop armageddon. Track a bard across the world. Take bounties. Grow your reputation. Become an assassination target due to aforementioned banging of wife/husband. Watch the grains in the sands of time dissolve away.

For the love of god use the translation patch, and read my translated notes from the official player's guide - it will help SO MUCH! https://steamcommunity.com/app/335420/discussions/0/2673381967531201203/

A very charming, but sort of aimless dungeon crawler. I recommend it, but mostly for the novelty. There's a few unique systems (like character aging) that are interesting, but for the most part the gameplay is deceptively simple and/or not really up to modern standards. Overworld exploration is done through menus, dialogue is randomly generated from sets of phrases, there's no broad narrative to follow whatsoever, combat is turn-based and you only control one character despite having a party, I could go on. You sort of have to make your own fun, which would be fine if you weren't so limited. But despite its shortcomings, the game manages to be very pleasant to play. It has a nice soundtrack, is appropriately difficult, there's not much pressure in or out of combat, and the unique systems that it does have are fun enough to figure out. I'd imagine it would be very boring to play for many people but if you're looking for a relaxing, unique experience, this game isn't a bad choice. Just make sure to get the English fan translation.

With the English patch (check the discussion forum), this is currently the most easily understood Lunatic Dawn game in the store. The Legends Pack also has patches for each of its games, but this one is more complete from what I've seen so far.

Passage of the Book is an open-ended, party-based dungeon-crawling RPG. It begins by having you create a world according to a few simple parameters, and then you're thrown right into it with some basic equipment and money. You recruit other party members via inns and through talking to other adventurers, and over time improve all your characters by fulfilling requests and plundering dungeons. There is no overarching narrative; rather, you're left to do as you like and become as famous/infamous as you please.

Creating a character invovles selecting certain criteria from a small window and selecting someone from a list of generated results. Age and gender can affect one's stats in different ways - a mid-20's character will generally be stronger than a much older one, but an older one may have much more charisma, for example. There aren't strict classes as much as there are stats which determine what kinds of actions a character is best at performing - a warrior is going to prioritize strength over intelligence, a mage will do the opposite, so on and so forth. Again, very freeform and the details are largely up to the player. Party members are NOT created by the player - they are recruited once the game starts.

Passage of the Book is tough. Enemies can be very powerful and there's little indication as to what kinds of enemies will be in different dungeons, but with persistence and a full party you can usually make it out ok. Equipment is straightforward - bought at shops, can be improved X number of times, and different folks are better with different weapons. Inns allow you to talk to various individuals, including your own party members, as well as purchase supplies. Lamps are especially important for dungeons - you can get stuck in the dark without one! There are also item shops, temples, training areas (where you raise your own skills in exchange for money), and an information broker through whom you can search for info on specific people and places.

Battle is a turn-based affair similar to other Japanese console RPG's, in that you select an action then watch as everyone takes their turns. The difference, though, is you only have primary control over your own character - your party acts independently, but can be encouraged to focus on particular enemies or utilize certain strategies (this is largely similar to the other Lunatic Dawn games in the Legends Pack). After battle, loot is divided amongst your party and can be won through a competitive game. Once divided, loot belongs to each person, not to the player exclusively, and dividing loot is also what helps maintain cohesion within your party (members can become dissatisfied and leave).

Here's a fun tip I forgot to mention when I first wrote this: If you want to get a lot of loot/money, head out into a dungeon with some folks you don't care about, let em die, and sell off what they had. You can loot them and folks typically don't have a big issue with it/you can take it for yourself.

Overall, it's a very open, freeform experience that I've never really encountered elsewhere. I'd almost call Passage of the Book more of a sim than a traditional dungeon crawler. Either way, it's a unique experience that fans of old-school dungeon crawling will appreciate, as the mechanics are solid and the sense of accomplishment grows very quickly. Definitely recommend giving this one a go.
