Town of Salem is a fresh innovation on the classic party games Mafia and Werewolf. It is a game of murder, accusations, deceit and mob hysteria.
How To Play
The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments - Town, Mafia, Serial Killers, Arsonists and Neutrals. If you are a Town member (the good guys) you must track down the Mafia and other villains before they kill you. The catch? You don't know who is a Town member and who is a villain.
If you are an evil role, such as a Serial Killer, you secretly murder town members in the veil of night and try to avoid getting caught.
Roles
Town of Salem has 33 unique roles ensuring a different experience each time you play.
Before a game starts, players are put into a lobby where the host can select what roles will be in the game. Players are then assigned roles at random from the list of chosen roles. Players have an in-game role card that explains their role's abilities and alignments. For an in-depth look at the abilities of each role please visit:
Game Phases
Night
The night phase is when most roles use their abilities. For example, Serial Killers stealthily murder people, Doctors heal people who are attacked, and Sheriffs interrogate people for suspicious activity.
Day
The day phase allows the Town members to discuss who they suspect of being an evil role. Once the voting phase starts a majority vote from the town will put someone on trial.
Defense
The defense phase is when you plead your innocence to the town. Have a convincing story or find yourself facing the gallows!
Judgement
During this phase the town will vote on the fate of the defendant. Players can vote guilty, innocent or abstain. If there are more guilty votes than innocent votes the defendant is sentenced to death by hanging!
Customization
Players are able to choose their own map (town setting), character, pet, lobby icon, death animation, house and a custom name. The other players in the game will see your selections. There are currently 10 maps, 29 characters, 20 pets, 5 death animations and 20 houses to choose from.
Achievements
There are currently over 220 unique achievements in the game. Earning achievements will grant various in-game items (however the items for donation rewards are exclusive to Kickstarter).

For me its a very chill game to play since all you do is yapp in the chat.
The game is full of racist, the game has 11 years and the devs still dont put a filter of words to censor. Im starting to think that they actually are racist, that would explain why they dont care at all. The game is adictive tho, but its imposible to ignore the racists people (that devs dont care about)
super fun game back in the day but its a dead game now unfortunately
Trash game, do not buy. Its dead asf, not new player friendly, Toxic and unbalanced. Its annoying to play the evil roles and you always feel like at disatvantage.
fun game same as TOS 2 except a little more simple
love it
requires a good number of players to start though so if the overall player count is low you can't really get anywhere unfortunately
been playing this game for forever, runs much smoother through steam. great game!
meta has taken over a few times in this game throughout its lifetime, and taken over again. So gameplay is a little weird with others. Also I think ranked practice is the one of the few lobbies with ppl still playing. There are a Few. All that being said, if you play the way you wanna, its still fun.
I left this game open on my computer for like 2 months straight. Pretty good game though!
Town of Salem – The Ultimate Game of Deception & Deduction
Hours Played: 23
Town of Salem is a social deduction game where lying, bluffing, and strategy are key to survival. If you love games like Mafia or Werewolf, this is one of the best online versions—but be prepared for some chaos and toxicity along the way.
The Good
✅ Deep & Engaging Gameplay – Each match plays out differently based on roles, accusations, and social manipulation.
✅ Huge Variety of Roles – Dozens of unique roles keep the game fresh and unpredictable.
✅ Great for Playing with Friends – Backstabbing and outsmarting friends is always fun.
✅ Simple Yet Addictive – Easy to learn, but mastering deception takes skill.
✅ Tense & Hilarious Moments – Nothing beats a last-second defense or a perfect lie.
The Bad
❌ Toxic Players & Trolls – Public lobbies can get frustrating with bad faith players.
❌ Can Be Harsh for New Players – Getting accused or executed early feels unfair at times.
❌ Heavily Dependent on Communication – If players don’t engage, the game falls apart.
Final Verdict
With 23 hours, I can say Town of Salem is a fantastic social deduction game, but expect some frustration with random lobbies. If you enjoy mind games and deception, it’s a must-play—especially with friends!
Rating: 8/10 – Lie, manipulate, survive. 🏡🔪
Role serv

9 misslynches out of 10, would recommend
I fondly remember this game being really fun with lots of replay-ability but I've just launched to try again and I can't even get into a game, been placed in 10 queue's with each queue being 2-3 minutes long, and at the end of each countdown it tells me "There was an unbalanced number of players to fill all games and since you were one of the most recent to join you have been placed at the front of the next queue"
I've been placed at the "front" 9 times, someone explain that to me?
Banned for a minor joke after 10+ years im gonna buy accounts and ruin the game for the remaining players, ill spend 100s of dollars to kill this game lol.
I got this game on Feb 27th, a friend gave me $5 to buy this game on Steam because it has been crashing on web. Since the 27th I have already put in 30 hours, shows how often I play this game. I have played it on web since the game was released in 2014. I wish I could truly see how many hours I have racked up from the web version too. This game has become my life. 10/10 Nothing bad ever happens in this town.
I don't know about now, but the game playerbase has declined incredibly. But overall the game is pretty fun I won't lie.
I would highly suggest Town of salem over its Sequel, since Town of Salem is just more fun than TOS 2 for a lot of reasons.
very strategic and fun game, beware of toxic players and game throwers
Brings me back to being 10, falsely accusing towns people and watching them hang.
its fun. none of my friends play it though
Great game for an ex gamer addict like me because it's casual yet feeds that need to game. Sadly it's dying but you could help solve that by joining the community!! :D
This is an amazing game and worth the pick up!! $5 is a steal for how much replay ability this game has! It only gets better with friends. 10/10 best game
Loved this game and played it for a while, even longer on my phone. Unfortunately the game is riddled with racists and trolls. I had some guy who was upset at me for winning, so he copied my user and followed me into my games and told everyone I was spamming slurs (which I never did) and now I got falsely banned. I doubt new players are coming into this game but if you are, do not play this game.
One of the classic social deduction games, where people use logic rather than random kills (mostly anyway lol).
Need to play this again more as it is SUPER fun.
8/10
Started playing in 2020 and still play this game to this day! i highly recommend! One of the best Social Deductive games available today! 10/10!!!
this is my most played game, and that counts for something
Game itself is fun. Fast paced, easy to lose track. The community can be...unfortunately unpleasant, racist, toxic etc. But by and large they seem pretty chill. At least in casual.
A fun social game inspired by Werewolf/Mafia.
This is essentially the same game as Town of Salem 2 but with different characters/roles & cosmetics. At the time of writing, the number of active players for this game is less than TOS2. However, it is much easier to get into a classic game (better for beginners) than in TOS2. TOS2 really only has active games for an all/any mode which is for advanced play.
If you haven't played Town of Salem, I definitely recommend this version over TOS2. Also, it's worth noting, I've *never* been able to find a game for the coven DLC I purchased. So, unless you can get players for it, I wouldn't recommend the DLC.
Super fun game! If you're new, you'll need a friend who's played for a while to help you along the way, but once you get the hang of it, it's great!
Game is actually really fun and it doesnt take long to find a game in 2025! still active fanbase! its kinda like Among us... but no tasks to do, more or so of a murder mystery type game!
Definitely worth it! Town Of Salem II on the other hand, has very little players.
The haters never let me win when I played this game years ago... #NeverForget
game is fun but if you are trying to win and be civil play with friends
For those who enjoy the One Night Werewolf board game or playing Mafia with a deck of regular cards with your high school theater friends this is another step in the game genre of hidden roles with a select few that are baddies that you have to sus out and dispose of. More recently we have Town of Salem 2 and more genre defining games like Among Us. Despite all that Town of Salem holds a special place in my heart. There are no voice channels, you are using your wit and text based communication to be a great supportive towns folk and do your part... or you are crafting up a perfect alibi as a baddy to survive and hopefully secure a win for your faction. Classic mode you will find a fair amount of new players and comes with some frustrations, and with just about any gameplay mode you will find a amount of toxic and extremely impolite people that you have the misfortune of playing alongside. Despite the bad eggs you may encounter, the simplicity of the game mechanics and sometimes quite hilarious interactions with other players make this game all the more worth it in the end <3
bought it for the nostalgia, and it still holds up
Dumb dead game, go play something else. I wonder why, when they ban you for a LOOSE definition of "game throwing" when you just work together, or what ever, and then no recourse, you wonder why none would play it? or buy anything on it?
Quick note that I have played way more on a browser.
It's a fun game that is let down by just how bad the community is, and how it's encouraged by throwing being a bannable offence and also something you will get accused of for the dumbest of reasons. I return for nostalgia every year or so before remembering why I stopped playing.
Getting banned as Executioner for telling the truth on stand in an attempt to get the day 10 lynch achievement is genuinely laughable. Fix your achievements or change the outlook that is had on unorthodox plays. I fully intended to win by getting the achievement and me getting banned and denied the appeal because "I wasn't intending to win" is as much of a joke as this game is.
Wouldn't recommend especially given that the game is dying and the player base that does exist is as toxic as Chernobyl.
got perma banned for a mildly inappropriate name but I don't really care because the game sucked anyway. terribly balanced, repetitive, boring, long wait times in lobbies, loaded with micro transactions, so many tryhards no one plays chill and they'll scream at you if you don't play your role perfectly
Best mafia-based game ever. There was no IRL mafia meetings that could compete with that :)
great game, not as popular anymore.
**Attention Newcomers**
the only game modes anyone plays is AnyAll and rarely regular besides that the other options are dead.
Great game, claim survivor day 1 if you wanna win. :)
I used to play this a lot, it was a lot of fun. But now it's dead and they ban everyone for no reason. TOS2 is shid tier, shame they killed this game by trying to make a worse version of it.
I'd like to say first that I used to play this game all the time back in the day when it was a free browser game. It used to be a lot of fun. Now it's dead. You will sit in queue forever, and a ranked game will never pop. Your only option if you ever want to play the game is to go to ranked practice. Coordinated groups will go into the lobbies and take turns leaving seconds before the game launches to stall the lobby indefinitely. The same accounts keep doing it, but the devs/mods don't ban them. Who will they ban though? They will ban long term players you've played for years for the most trivial reasons. I received a strike on my account for "leaving the game" because said that I was AFK for one single night. I appealed this strike and the power tripping useless mod tried to tell me that being afk was as good as leaving the game. I pasted the actual rule that said "don't be afk for an extended period of time." He literally responded "yes, an extended period of time. One night is an extended period of time." This C-sucker really told me 40 seconds is an extended period of time. Unbelievable. There are regularly people leaving the game early (you can expect 2 to 3 of them at least every single game). And it's filled with game throwers and trolls. They really shouldn't be able to charge money for this game. The player base is dead, the mods are horrible, and the community is horrible. Do not waste your money.
Used to play this game via the browser a lot, then got it on Steam and played it a bit more.
I remembered having a lot of fun with this game - hardly any long queue times, and so long as people knew how to play, the games were generally entertaining and fun. Even better though if people really leaned into the Roleplaying aspects.
This was all a long time ago though...
Then I joined the Official Discord and after a week had one of the Official ToS Moderators start private DM'ing me and harassing me into joining a Loli Hentai Discord server. I still have this interaction screen-shotted and can still access the DM's.
I have never touched Town of Salem again. If that's the kind of people BlankMediaGames have on their team, then absolutely the fuck not wanting anything to do with their games again. And considering what I know the other team members are like where they can't take a lick of criticism and have no manner of controlling toxicity, they themselves will be the reason ToS eventually fails.
Good game, the most horrid community to accompany it. Imagine tryharding in town of salem
Played this game back in school with friends on a web browser.
When I saw they had a purchasable game on steam to 'support them' I jumped right on board.
Oh yikes, it runs slow and chunky despite being its own game launcher and the UI is abit jank, I'm sure they'll iron it out.
They never ironed it out.
This game is effectively dead and has a toxic player base.
If I could only play one steam game for the rest of my life, it would be this game due to its sheer replayability. Been playing ever since 2016 and I have at least a thousand hours on both the browser and steam versions combined. It's just a shame that the game is declining in popularity. The only gamemode I can really play is Coven All Any
An extremely fun and addictive game that despite the simple mechanics is challenging but in a fun way. This is game I highly suggest others play but be warned it becomes very addictive.
this is actually a $10 game. did i say it's a $10 game? actually it's a $10 chatroom at this point :(
Unfortunately this game has gone down severely in quality, and as various reviews mentioned, this game is basically overrun with trolls and spammers. However, the mods usually ban other people for the bare minimum such as expressing a possibly controversial opinion, a joke, etc, instead of banning said (racist usually) trolls/ spammers. The biggest threat to this game is freedom of speech lol. There are many lobby bots that ruin the game experience, and you have to be very careful about what you say and walk on eggshells to prevent getting banned. This game used to be fun back when markiplier and other youtubers played it, which made me buy it at first, but now I do not recommend this game at all. Save your 5 bucks and buy yourself a coffee instead. I'll keep this game just for the nostalgia but don't ever see myself reaching for this again.
This game is completely un-moderated and full of trolls, racists, homophobes and cheaters. I wanted it to be fun. I played over 200 games. It just isn't fun when all you come by are more and more trolls. And then when ya complain on their discord, the moderators suggest buying the expansion to avoid the issue. Nice upsell /s
