Town of Salem is a fresh innovation on the classic party games Mafia and Werewolf. It is a game of murder, accusations, deceit and mob hysteria.
How To Play
The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments - Town, Mafia, Serial Killers, Arsonists and Neutrals. If you are a Town member (the good guys) you must track down the Mafia and other villains before they kill you. The catch? You don't know who is a Town member and who is a villain.
If you are an evil role, such as a Serial Killer, you secretly murder town members in the veil of night and try to avoid getting caught.
Roles
Town of Salem has 33 unique roles ensuring a different experience each time you play.
Before a game starts, players are put into a lobby where the host can select what roles will be in the game. Players are then assigned roles at random from the list of chosen roles. Players have an in-game role card that explains their role's abilities and alignments. For an in-depth look at the abilities of each role please visit:
Game Phases
Night
The night phase is when most roles use their abilities. For example, Serial Killers stealthily murder people, Doctors heal people who are attacked, and Sheriffs interrogate people for suspicious activity.
Day
The day phase allows the Town members to discuss who they suspect of being an evil role. Once the voting phase starts a majority vote from the town will put someone on trial.
Defense
The defense phase is when you plead your innocence to the town. Have a convincing story or find yourself facing the gallows!
Judgement
During this phase the town will vote on the fate of the defendant. Players can vote guilty, innocent or abstain. If there are more guilty votes than innocent votes the defendant is sentenced to death by hanging!
Customization
Players are able to choose their own map (town setting), character, pet, lobby icon, death animation, house and a custom name. The other players in the game will see your selections. There are currently 10 maps, 29 characters, 20 pets, 5 death animations and 20 houses to choose from.
Achievements
There are currently over 220 unique achievements in the game. Earning achievements will grant various in-game items (however the items for donation rewards are exclusive to Kickstarter).

the only people moderating this game are 30 year old liberal redditor cat ladies with no families that should tell you all you need to know
I don't know why I keep coming back to this game to play with trolls and racists, but I do.
i got banned for reasons that i do not know of. my user has always been the word silly, and then i get banned for it. WHY? I LOVE THIS GAME PLEASE UN BAN ME
So, what exactly is Town of Salem all about? It's basically a new take on old party games such as "Mafia" and "Werewolf" where 7-15 players are randomly assigned as Town members (the good guys), the Mafia (the bad guys) or as solo roles that don't belong to a team (such as the Serial Killer, Jester or Executioner). The goal for the Town members is to determine who the bad guys are before they are killed by them but you will have to spend time gathering evidence and eventually trusting the right people in order to bring the Mafia and Serial Killer down.
The base game has 33 roles to choose from (although some are only available in particular modes); 49 roles are available if you include The Coven expansion. Once players have been assigned their roles the game starts. The game is broken into two phases: a night phase and a day phase. During the night phase, most roles are able to use their abilities such as investigating people, killing people or healing people. During the day phase, players discuss who they suspect of being a bad guy and they can vote to put someone on trial. The accused are given a chance to convince the other players they are innocent before another round of voting decides whether they are guilty or innocent. If enough guilty votes are passed, they are lynched.
If the Town members manage to lynch all the evil roles, they win. However, if the Mafia manage to eliminate all of the Town members, then they win. The Serial Killer wins by killing off everyone, and roles like the Jester and Executioner, have other goals, which result in much misdirection and mischief in the process.
it is good so yes play the game if you have the money for it you will like it if you give it time
Thanks for reading
I love this game - easily one of the best social deduction games out there. The problem is the devs refuse to actually properly manage or moderate it, so it's essentially just full of racists and trolls now. The sequel is good, but good luck actually finding a lobby. At least for now, stay away.
Good if everyones on the same page, feel voice chat would enhance it.
game has become almost unplayable, every game is 6 of the same dude who spams slurs and instantly tells everyone who maf is. devs do not give a shit.
Really fun party game. There are different variants of this game but I think the most popular is one-night warewolf. Great game but will challenge your trust with your friends. Definitely a great party game!
Game 1 with 3 classic town role scrolls: Godfather
Game 2: Godfather
Game 3: Godfather
Game 4: Framer
Game 5: Jester
Game 6: Serial Killer
uninstalling this garbage
great game been playing for a while. Needs a better reporting system so you can report people during games tho. But also go play Town of Salem 2 instead, its better i just need to learn it. Its easy to learn if you havent played this.
It was fun and great till people started taking risk to kill people just because. It also doesn't help that youtubers made this game popular, much like among us, it was fun till it got popular and people started to imitate their favorite streamers/youtubers. Then it just went down hill.
If you like mafia, I'd either try to get enough friends to play it alone or if you like chaos then go for it.
takes a while to get the jist of everything but it can be very fun
Was good years ago, but don't bother now. Game is on its death bed and has, honest to god, the most toxic community I've ever experienced in anything. I played League of Legends. I played WoW. Many, many multiplayer games. This game wins. By a large margin.
And due to the nature of the game, you cannot just ignore chat. Most modes are completely dead, and due to the game having such a small playerbase now you will probably get the same toxic asshole every game if you do get into one (if you got a really big asshole, you could easily get into a game with different people when this game was popular) You will get called actual slurs for doing anything someone didn't like/making any form of mistake. Even the "new player" modes are dead these days, it's right into the lion's den with you. One of the reasons this game struggles so much to attract new players now. Some of the saddest, most miserable people you'll ever meet play this game religiously. This game always had a toxicity problem in all honesty, but it was nothing like what it is now. It's gotten much worse.
I loved this game when it was peak popularity, but avoid it at all costs now. The time to play it was, unfortunately, years ago. There is nothing here. I would only consider buying it if you have a dedicated friend group that is large enough to fill entire lobbies - that is the only way to still have a good time with this game.
goated game i loved it for years town of salem 2 is out but i still come back and play
ban yemişim isimden ben bir şey kaybetmedim ama town of salem bir oyuncu kaybetti haydi iyi günler dilerim al oyununu başına çal zaten bi kaç seneye oyuncusu kalmaz
For me its a very chill game to play since all you do is yapp in the chat.
The game is full of racist, the game has 11 years and the devs still dont put a filter of words to censor. Im starting to think that they actually are racist, that would explain why they dont care at all. The game is adictive tho, but its imposible to ignore the racists people (that devs dont care about)
stupid ahh game. got my mail stolen in 2019 because of data breach & still suffering from it
super fun game back in the day but its a dead game now unfortunately
Trash game, do not buy. Its dead asf, not new player friendly, Toxic and unbalanced. Its annoying to play the evil roles and you always feel like at disatvantage.
fun game same as TOS 2 except a little more simple
love it
requires a good number of players to start though so if the overall player count is low you can't really get anywhere unfortunately
been playing this game for forever, runs much smoother through steam. great game!
meta has taken over a few times in this game throughout its lifetime, and taken over again. So gameplay is a little weird with others. Also I think ranked practice is the one of the few lobbies with ppl still playing. There are a Few. All that being said, if you play the way you wanna, its still fun.
I left this game open on my computer for like 2 months straight. Pretty good game though!
Town of Salem – The Ultimate Game of Deception & Deduction
Hours Played: 23
Town of Salem is a social deduction game where lying, bluffing, and strategy are key to survival. If you love games like Mafia or Werewolf, this is one of the best online versions—but be prepared for some chaos and toxicity along the way.
The Good
✅ Deep & Engaging Gameplay – Each match plays out differently based on roles, accusations, and social manipulation.
✅ Huge Variety of Roles – Dozens of unique roles keep the game fresh and unpredictable.
✅ Great for Playing with Friends – Backstabbing and outsmarting friends is always fun.
✅ Simple Yet Addictive – Easy to learn, but mastering deception takes skill.
✅ Tense & Hilarious Moments – Nothing beats a last-second defense or a perfect lie.
The Bad
❌ Toxic Players & Trolls – Public lobbies can get frustrating with bad faith players.
❌ Can Be Harsh for New Players – Getting accused or executed early feels unfair at times.
❌ Heavily Dependent on Communication – If players don’t engage, the game falls apart.
Final Verdict
With 23 hours, I can say Town of Salem is a fantastic social deduction game, but expect some frustration with random lobbies. If you enjoy mind games and deception, it’s a must-play—especially with friends!
Rating: 8/10 – Lie, manipulate, survive. 🏡🔪

9 misslynches out of 10, would recommend
I fondly remember this game being really fun with lots of replay-ability but I've just launched to try again and I can't even get into a game, been placed in 10 queue's with each queue being 2-3 minutes long, and at the end of each countdown it tells me "There was an unbalanced number of players to fill all games and since you were one of the most recent to join you have been placed at the front of the next queue"
I've been placed at the "front" 9 times, someone explain that to me?
Banned for a minor joke after 10+ years im gonna buy accounts and ruin the game for the remaining players, ill spend 100s of dollars to kill this game lol.
I got this game on Feb 27th, a friend gave me $5 to buy this game on Steam because it has been crashing on web. Since the 27th I have already put in 30 hours, shows how often I play this game. I have played it on web since the game was released in 2014. I wish I could truly see how many hours I have racked up from the web version too. This game has become my life. 10/10 Nothing bad ever happens in this town.
I don't know about now, but the game playerbase has declined incredibly. But overall the game is pretty fun I won't lie.
I would highly suggest Town of salem over its Sequel, since Town of Salem is just more fun than TOS 2 for a lot of reasons.
very strategic and fun game, beware of toxic players and game throwers
Brings me back to being 10, falsely accusing towns people and watching them hang.
its fun. none of my friends play it though
Great game for an ex gamer addict like me because it's casual yet feeds that need to game. Sadly it's dying but you could help solve that by joining the community!! :D
This is an amazing game and worth the pick up!! $5 is a steal for how much replay ability this game has! It only gets better with friends. 10/10 best game
Loved this game and played it for a while, even longer on my phone. Unfortunately the game is riddled with racists and trolls. I had some guy who was upset at me for winning, so he copied my user and followed me into my games and told everyone I was spamming slurs (which I never did) and now I got falsely banned. I doubt new players are coming into this game but if you are, do not play this game.
One of the classic social deduction games, where people use logic rather than random kills (mostly anyway lol).
Need to play this again more as it is SUPER fun.
8/10
Started playing in 2020 and still play this game to this day! i highly recommend! One of the best Social Deductive games available today! 10/10!!!
this is my most played game, and that counts for something
Game itself is fun. Fast paced, easy to lose track. The community can be...unfortunately unpleasant, racist, toxic etc. But by and large they seem pretty chill. At least in casual.
A fun social game inspired by Werewolf/Mafia.
This is essentially the same game as Town of Salem 2 but with different characters/roles & cosmetics. At the time of writing, the number of active players for this game is less than TOS2. However, it is much easier to get into a classic game (better for beginners) than in TOS2. TOS2 really only has active games for an all/any mode which is for advanced play.
If you haven't played Town of Salem, I definitely recommend this version over TOS2. Also, it's worth noting, I've *never* been able to find a game for the coven DLC I purchased. So, unless you can get players for it, I wouldn't recommend the DLC.
Super fun game! If you're new, you'll need a friend who's played for a while to help you along the way, but once you get the hang of it, it's great!
Game is actually really fun and it doesnt take long to find a game in 2025! still active fanbase! its kinda like Among us... but no tasks to do, more or so of a murder mystery type game!
Definitely worth it! Town Of Salem II on the other hand, has very little players.
The haters never let me win when I played this game years ago... #NeverForget
game is fun but if you are trying to win and be civil play with friends
For those who enjoy the One Night Werewolf board game or playing Mafia with a deck of regular cards with your high school theater friends this is another step in the game genre of hidden roles with a select few that are baddies that you have to sus out and dispose of. More recently we have Town of Salem 2 and more genre defining games like Among Us. Despite all that Town of Salem holds a special place in my heart. There are no voice channels, you are using your wit and text based communication to be a great supportive towns folk and do your part... or you are crafting up a perfect alibi as a baddy to survive and hopefully secure a win for your faction. Classic mode you will find a fair amount of new players and comes with some frustrations, and with just about any gameplay mode you will find a amount of toxic and extremely impolite people that you have the misfortune of playing alongside. Despite the bad eggs you may encounter, the simplicity of the game mechanics and sometimes quite hilarious interactions with other players make this game all the more worth it in the end <3
bought it for the nostalgia, and it still holds up
