Honestly love this game, but i am so fed up of being banned for leaving games because i cant be asked with gamethrowers and yet the throwers continue to play. i have played this game for years and you always have the same issue. nothing happens to throwers i would gladly be a monitor, this is honestly one of my favourite games but you go through a stage where you have bots stopping lobbies and then gamethrowers. their are so many roles you could create to make the throwers stop

Great social deduction game, good for low-end pcs! I could run it like a dream! ^^
It has great replayability because each time is different, you can have the same role and have multiple vastly different games.

Brownie points for being the original Among Us, but it is no longer new player friendly. Community is very hostile towards new players, and you're probably not going to be able to get a group of friends to play with when other games like Mindnight and Among Us exist. However, unlike those games, there is a much more extreme power imbalance because of the roles. Certain roles are more important than others/need to be played a certain way to win which can be challenging for new players to adapt to.

Used to be fun as a web-based game, now it's toxic as all get-out and NOT new player friendly -- even less so than the second one. Stay FAR away from this one.

I don't know about the PC game but absolutely do not buy it with an email through their website. I spent some money on that game, invested into the cosmetics since all my friends at the time played it. Never again. I will never support this game ever. The website was hacked in 2018. They sent everyone a notice. When I tried to log in to it to change my password via the website, the user name was hacked and password changed. The bullsh!t thing is I contacted their customer service and they told me I'm SH!T OUT OF LUCK, so FU

devs and community hit the shitter, i had hundreds of hours of fun on this game a long time ago. let it die...

this game really makes you think and learn how the diffrent factions and role abilitys work together, and there is a large freindly playerbase waitng for you.

More people need to play this game. It may be toxic at times but it's so much fun and kind of rare in my case that I see any toxicity. Oddly enough, the boring roles are more fun than the roles that are more unique.

Ever since Digital Bandidos acquired BlankMediaGames this game has gone to sh*t. Do not spend a penny on this or Town of Salem 2.

Banned for saying the Escort name change should be reverted, since there is no reason to change it after 10 years of the name being completely fine.

i cannot suggest anybody play this game for the simple fact the developers are immature and abuse their powers. i was wrongfully banned for an "inappropriate name" when my name was kimbo slice and ronnie coleman, so i asked the devs why i was banned and guess what they did, banned me for a day off the steam discussions, so after a day i asked why they did that? and guess what...they perma banned me. so keep this in mind before buying or playing this game that the devs DO NOT care about you and will ban you for no reason and when you rightfully ask them what happened they will brush you off and ban you. so no i do not suggest ANYBODY supports such immature devs, and to the devs i tell say "do better" cause YOU are the reason your game is dead.

toxic game, toxic community, no one does anything to stop the doxxing/crimes being comitted

With this type of game, whether or not it's good is entirely dependent on its community. In this case, the community is horrifically (and almost comically) toxic and, more often than not, has no idea how to play the game. Matches are constantly thrown on purpose or taken into completely avoidable situations by sheer incompetence. On top of that, moderation is basically nonexistent. Nothing of substance is done to prune toxic players, though at this point at least 80% of the entire playerbase would be gone if any real action was taken.

The nail in the coffin is the awful monetization changes made throughout the years. Originally, the web version was free, but then they suddenly made it paid in an attempt to wall off toxic players. As you'd expect, this had no effect. Town Points were also initially the only currency, and later they replaced it with Merit Points as the basic currency, and from that point forward you could only get Town Points by paying real money. Many cosmetics are only obtainable through Town Points, which is shady at best. This isn't even getting into the three separate paid versions that give bare-bones rewards in return, or the cryptocurrency BS they tried pulling a few years ago.

Save your brain cells and either play in a private lobby with friends, or better yet, don't play at all.

How about we don't change things that didn't need changing? You could curb any of the various issues the community has been raising for years. Yet instead you waste time changing things that actively annoy the fan base who played the game despite those grievances.

Would not reccomend at all. Game's anti-leaver system is severe and harsh and will instantly ban you for 24 hours for leaving a game, even if the reason stated, is for an actual reason. The Leaver system ruins what could be a good game. 2nd, they removes Escort and Consort to "remove sexual themes from the game" which makes no sense. Escort as in ESCORTING PEOPLE AWAY TO SAVE THEM. Real nice logic there, genius. lets change 2 established game roles so they match our sequel's names for em, but tell people because its too sexual! Genius idea!" No. Its a casual game with no competitive points. No competitive scene. Nothing to gain from winning and nothing to lose from losing. Unmoderated decade old game. Its retarded when games punish you for leaving what is supposed to be a casual gamemode with no consequences. It's a game, sometimes you have to leave a game to do something. No reason to stop people from playing the game they own. Tldr: The leaver penalty acts like you're leaving a competitive championship for a Call Of Duty tournament instead of what the game should be, ie CASUAL. Why else would it say you "left early" if you don't wait exactly half an hour to an hour or more until your tombstone pops up and/or a "medium tries to contact you" even if you have no last will at all due to dying early on, then if you leave during that, because who would sit and watch paint dry while the cutscene plays out, you get suspended for a day, maybe more if its 5+ leaves, The crux of the issue is the devs need to change the games label from casual to serious/competitive at all times, doesint matter what team you're on, then people would MAYBE understand why the severe harshness of the leaver penalty could possibly be justified, but as it stands, a leaver buster 2.0 system has no reason or logic being in a casual game which advertises itself as such. Tldr: it translates in waiting 30+ minutes, medium not contacting you, and either alt-tabbing or being forced to read trash talk in chat which may or may not be toxic, until it ends. Meanwhile you're better off LEAVING since there is no viable reason to stay, watch nothing of substance get accomplished by your possibly garbage teammates, and surprise surprise! mafia/witches/neutral wins, which means town accomplished nothing, and now you're more likely to not even bother playing because the game forced you to watch your team lose horribly. If i were there, i'd just watch r/askreddit videos with subway surfer footage in the background, ie AFKING, else i;d be peeved anyways, and we can't leave because we're dissatisfied with the quality of the team/match, we just look to chat to vent like its among us and troll people there.Least then you'd get SOME enjoyment and entertainment in an annoying/boring game session otherwise. is CASUAL and COMP/RANKED, one and the same?? Cause that's what it sounds like thats what it's treated as in regards to how seriously the leave penalty is. Wife givin birth? too bad biatch, DAY BAN. Gotta do something that involves touching grass, or god forbid somethin like uh, idk, Hurricane Milton or ANY NATURAL WEATHER PHENOMENON EVER makes you lose power, well f@k you, you get banned for 24/48 hours for leaving a game early. Might as well remove the quit button and force players to stay in the game permanently against their will right? Oh wait, that would make the game LOOK LIKE MALWARE cause they wouldint be able to shut off the game at all! :D Leave the LEAVER-BUSTER crap IN YOUR SWEATY COMPETITIVE MODES AND STOP FORCING IT ONTO CASUAL. There you go, problem solved, don't fix what ain't broke. And yes, I stopped playing a while ago cuz it was:
A. BORING.
B. INFURIATING, why? Because, bad teammates, bad rng, and people being paranoid in general and toxic.
Stay away from this game, and it's sequel, Town of Salem 2.

Update: the "humble" community mod Flavorable banned me from the Town of Salem forums for not agreeing with his opinion. I replied to someone that punishing people even more severely by banning their accounts from the get go if they leave more then x amount of times after certain strikes will only cause people to boycott the game and mass review bomb it, because now, its 5 dollars again, plus the coven dlc whch makes this 15 DOLLARS! which also makes it a scam because you need to pay FOR BASIC GAMEPLAY FEATURES. What do I get for daring to have the incorrect opinion? basically get told "f@k off m8, your opinion is trash cause I don't agree with it."

Town of Salem is not that bad, it's alright.

I know it says I've only played for 0.3 hours but that's because I've been using the web app for the past 4 years. Anyway, after the popular emergence of the hit indie game, "Among Us" a lot of people did a bit of digging into proper substitutes for the funny impostor game. I was one of those people and stumbled upon this game, and was apart of it's community for a couple years. When I first came to it I thought the roles would be really overwhelming but I didn't actually mind them.

I played this game as my go to social deduction game for a while, until I decided to mix the bowl a little bit and go on other games (Mafia.gg, Wolvesville, etc.) I think playing other SD games helped me understand the merits and flaws of each game.

When TOS2 came out, the "hardcore" community for TOS1 stayed, but really I just viewed the game as casual fun. It can be a bit intimidating for a first timer nowadays, because you're going into lobbies with fully experienced players who've at least been playing the game for 1 year+, but I find that the community is actually really lovely. I've never had any problems with racists, hackers or some of the other stuff people have been going on about, and I think this is one of the most healthy SD communities out there (it's got some kinks but that can be ironed out). Speaking of updates.

Digital Bandidos has taken over the cycle of the game (I don't know the specifics) but they made some UI changes, fixed a lot of bugs (thank god, the super roleblock on Pirate was actually so annoying), changed TT Veteran (okay, sure), and apparently most controversial was updating the names of Escort and Consort? What? We had this discussion last year when they changed the names in TOS2. Why are we having this discussion again? I'm going to bring up the same points I brought up last year. 1. Giving someone enough drinks so they're drunk is more PG friendly then forcibly having sex with your target. 2. Making someone drunk so they can't do their action properly is more realistic then having sex with them so that they're distracted 3. Why does it matter? Who cares? It's not like anyone actually likes playing esc or cons (lol)

TLDR; Good game, update is good, seems intimidating but it's actually not that bad just ask for help (we might make fun of you at first but you'll get it eventually just don't feel embarrassed)
Actually I have a story for this, I recently got into Better Town of Salem 2 (modded tos2) and I got made fun of for screwing up fake silenced (don't ask me how please i beg) but I got there in the end right? So happy playing townies!

This game can be a ton of fun and is so satisfying if you win as one of the harder roles - I'm still riding a high from getting my target as executioner on DAY TWO, and getting two wins as the serial killer in a row! (In the serial killer game that was particularly tasty for me, on the last day all that was left was me, the mafioso, and two jesters. We hung one of the jesters, and the other jester and the mafioso voted guilty, and I was the only one who voted innocent. I felt SO EVIL and it was so good.)

Literally just voting "not recommended" because I think at this point, with the game having been out for so long, changing the name of escort to tavern keeper was a boneheaded and pointless move. This is a game which requires a lot of typing abbreviations in order to get your point across fast. In almost every single game I've played since the change, time has been wasted explaining to people that tavern keeper is just the escort. As a community we seem to have decided on tav for short (which is not as easy to type as esc, in my opinion), but the natural way to abbreviate tavern keeper, to me, is tk - but that abbreviation is already in use for "town killing" roles. Besides being confusing just for the sudden change, the name itself has the potential to lead to confusion, which is not what you want in a game like this. ...unless you're the mafia or a serial killer, I guess, but confusion and ambiguity DEFINITELY leads to the death of townies.

Maybe if the change had been to bartender or something I wouldn't be so annoyed. That fits the "alcohol" theme and isn't needlessly confusing.

Edited to add: I recently had a game where the vigilante shot the tavern keeper for claiming tk. So yeah, the change was 100% needlessly confusing. Also, it would appear that they took the escort and consort scrolls from inventories and did not replace them with tavern keeper and bootlegger scrolls, which is rude.

I really enjoy ToS and come back to it every now and then, but it's very odd that they'd start changing names of roles ten years after the game release. It obviously wasn't a problem for ten years, why is it a problem now. All that the changes do is cause confusion in a game where time management, fast typing skills, and clear thinking are imperative. What else is open to change now too? Will the serial killer be renamed? How about the arsonist? The escort and consort in the game role block and no one ever cared about the "profession" behind the role names because it wasn't important. If those professions are so bad, shouldn't the act of killing someone indiscriminately or burning someone to death be changed too? It's a weird hill to die on by my part, but the game has been out for ten years, fix the bugs and work on punishing game throwers, not changing things that don't need to be changed. The publisher also turned off comments on the recent patch notes after getting flamed for the changes, which is an L.

This newest update is just bad. So many pointless changes and still so little moderation in lobbies. There are constant gamethrowers or hackers in 40% of lobbies and racists in the other 60%. Resources should be allocated purely into heavy moderation at this point, not useless updates.

Number of useless updates:
Changes Consort and Escort to Bootlegger and Tavern keeper because lord forgive there are any adult themes in a murder game
Changed the disconnect from "They committed suicide" to "They disconnected from life"
Changed "He/She died last night" to "They died last night"
What is the point of these useless grammatical updates? Do better BMG this game is in such a bad state.

Game is great, art is great, roles are great. Meta rules are... annoying. Particularly in ranked. Sometimes I think people forget how the game is supposed to be played. The culture is hit or miss, sometimes I play with a good group and have a blast, win or lose. Sometimes I play with unkind children and I do not have a good time, win or lose. When possible, play with friends.

Nothing different than you would get in any online game, I suppose. And I keep coming back for a reason.

this game has great nostalgia factor but the staff and community both leave a lot to be desired. with lobbies being consistently thrown, mod support & intervention practically non-existent, and the existing playerbase either dwindling or playing for the sake of trolling, it's sort of a miracle the game still makes revenue. not really worth time or money, & without a doubt has outlived its lifespan. 3/10 but points for being the OG among us

got it fixed up, would still like to see more changes to this game in the future, like reduced scroll prices they are too expensive to be worth it compared to town of salem 2's scrolls also the game now a days feels like nobody even tries any more especially in coven all any, game is fun but I feel like the game overall right now is in an unhealthy game state and I would love to see how it is addressed in the future.

Have loved this game forever, let dead games lie. Role back the flavor updates and changes to TT and work on TOS2, we don't want role names changed or mechanics fucked with. Period.

Why would they edit mechanics of roles when that's gonna fuck with how people know the game works??? Like making it so Vet can't alert on TT if inno?? Thats a stupid mechanic change because now vet suicide tactic doesn't work and everyone is going to lynch vet asap because they're useless to the town and a danger if traitor.

Also why change the role names? Everyone is gonna refer to them as Esc and Cons still, new players haven't been coming to this game for years, let it lie and work on two, don't fuck with a game thats near dead, its not gonna get you more sales or players just piss off the old playerbase whos owned the game since Day 1

Also this doesn't address issues like people using IGNs that are blatantly bad, there was a fucker in more than 3 games recently who was using the name P Diddy inviting people to "partys" theres a massive moderation shortage and this update doesn't show any even mention of attempting to fix that besides a block system. I reported him every time and nothing happened to my knowledge. Because this guy has been doing this for multiple days.

Let the mechanics lie, don't make flavor changes or fuck with roles, it confuses players and messes up the ecosystem, or at minimum put it to a player base vote. If you're gonna update it at all focus on actually important shit like the historic mod shortage in this game that's always been an issue.

Also why bootlegger and tavern keeper?? That's promoting an even worse vice (alcoholism) and the implication is getting someone so drunk they can't move to do their role?? Like- if you ARE gonna change the flavor which I wouldn't be against, don't make it something worse to promote to a young audience which kills people and causes them to hurt others blackout drunk.

If you're gonna change the flavor do it fucking right at least and make it so neither of those things is promoted. This game is a game where you douse people in gasoline and light them ablaze as an arsonist so this change feels stupid and unnecessary cuz I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 18 especially with the poor moderation and dying community.

The patches are fine and the block system is a good addition but fucking with mechanics and known roles is stupid because it fucks up the game ecosystem and in the case here promotes something just as bad if not worse through the notion you're getting someone so drunk they can't move which could *literally kill someone irl*.

This game's mods are absolutely awful. There was someone spamming the N word in one of our matches, constantly... Then he reported EVERYONE else in the match for it, but he spammed it so so so damn much that you could barely see anyone else's words unless you changed the filter for it.

It used to be the best in its genre.

In a game where you find the murderers by interrogating your opponents, you can get unlimited bans due to harassment. Pathetic.

Game is alright, Mods/Admins are so corrupt that you can only play if you pay to win, If you don't pay to win, they will ban your account without notice. You cannot appeal your ban because the mods/Admins do not care about the banning system.

Great game concept but Corrupt Admin/Mods and Corrupt System.

Alot of griefers come in lobbies to mass report players abusing the system and getting them banned.
Mods/Admins will only consider unbanning you if you are a whale in the game.

TIPS:
+ Generate temporary Emails from google and use it to play Town of salem(Browser). Ranked queue is Dead but Public Newbie lobbies are always active.

+ Have a VPN active (just incase the mods/admins bans you)

+ Lynch every TP who reveals in chat.

Years down the line and the devs refuse to do anything regarding the state of the game's community in both ToS 1 and 2. Its very telling when people start doxxing others over stuff that happened in the game, and turn a blind eye to it until the community uproar got bad enough to where they HAD to address it. Its also telling how they push paid cosmetics over game balance based on what the community wants, only to just now suspend battle passes because "oh this is bad hold up hold up our game is dying". Credit to Curtis and Tuba for trying to fix what they can (mainly tuba tbh) but blankmedia otherwise is.. nah. You think they would learn to focus on their community's safety after the data breach way back when, but it seems they have not.


Not much more to stay, steer clear and just play among us or some other type of game instead. If you really want to play ToS, the first is leagues better than the second, but that's not saying much. I'm only writing the review here because I refunded the second one.
