Town of Salem is a fresh innovation on the classic party games Mafia and Werewolf. It is a game of murder, accusations, deceit and mob hysteria.
How To Play
The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments - Town, Mafia, Serial Killers, Arsonists and Neutrals. If you are a Town member (the good guys) you must track down the Mafia and other villains before they kill you. The catch? You don't know who is a Town member and who is a villain.
If you are an evil role, such as a Serial Killer, you secretly murder town members in the veil of night and try to avoid getting caught.
Roles
Town of Salem has 33 unique roles ensuring a different experience each time you play.
Before a game starts, players are put into a lobby where the host can select what roles will be in the game. Players are then assigned roles at random from the list of chosen roles. Players have an in-game role card that explains their role's abilities and alignments. For an in-depth look at the abilities of each role please visit:
Game Phases
Night
The night phase is when most roles use their abilities. For example, Serial Killers stealthily murder people, Doctors heal people who are attacked, and Sheriffs interrogate people for suspicious activity.
Day
The day phase allows the Town members to discuss who they suspect of being an evil role. Once the voting phase starts a majority vote from the town will put someone on trial.
Defense
The defense phase is when you plead your innocence to the town. Have a convincing story or find yourself facing the gallows!
Judgement
During this phase the town will vote on the fate of the defendant. Players can vote guilty, innocent or abstain. If there are more guilty votes than innocent votes the defendant is sentenced to death by hanging!
Customization
Players are able to choose their own map (town setting), character, pet, lobby icon, death animation, house and a custom name. The other players in the game will see your selections. There are currently 10 maps, 29 characters, 20 pets, 5 death animations and 20 houses to choose from.
Achievements
There are currently over 220 unique achievements in the game. Earning achievements will grant various in-game items (however the items for donation rewards are exclusive to Kickstarter).

Used to play this game via the browser a lot, then got it on Steam and played it a bit more.
I remembered having a lot of fun with this game - hardly any long queue times, and so long as people knew how to play, the games were generally entertaining and fun. Even better though if people really leaned into the Roleplaying aspects.
This was all a long time ago though...
Then I joined the Official Discord and after a week had one of the Official ToS Moderators start private DM'ing me and harassing me into joining a Loli Hentai Discord server. I still have this interaction screen-shotted and can still access the DM's.
I have never touched Town of Salem again. If that's the kind of people BlankMediaGames have on their team, then absolutely the fuck not wanting anything to do with their games again. And considering what I know the other team members are like where they can't take a lick of criticism and have no manner of controlling toxicity, they themselves will be the reason ToS eventually fails.
Played this game back in school with friends on a web browser.
When I saw they had a purchasable game on steam to 'support them' I jumped right on board.
Oh yikes, it runs slow and chunky despite being its own game launcher and the UI is abit jank, I'm sure they'll iron it out.
They never ironed it out.
This game is effectively dead and has a toxic player base.
If I could only play one steam game for the rest of my life, it would be this game due to its sheer replayability. Been playing ever since 2016 and I have at least a thousand hours on both the browser and steam versions combined. It's just a shame that the game is declining in popularity. The only gamemode I can really play is Coven All Any
An extremely fun and addictive game that despite the simple mechanics is challenging but in a fun way. This is game I highly suggest others play but be warned it becomes very addictive.
this is actually a $10 game. did i say it's a $10 game? actually it's a $10 chatroom at this point :(
Unfortunately this game has gone down severely in quality, and as various reviews mentioned, this game is basically overrun with trolls and spammers. However, the mods usually ban other people for the bare minimum such as expressing a possibly controversial opinion, a joke, etc, instead of banning said (racist usually) trolls/ spammers. The biggest threat to this game is freedom of speech lol. There are many lobby bots that ruin the game experience, and you have to be very careful about what you say and walk on eggshells to prevent getting banned. This game used to be fun back when markiplier and other youtubers played it, which made me buy it at first, but now I do not recommend this game at all. Save your 5 bucks and buy yourself a coffee instead. I'll keep this game just for the nostalgia but don't ever see myself reaching for this again.
This game is completely un-moderated and full of trolls, racists, homophobes and cheaters. I wanted it to be fun. I played over 200 games. It just isn't fun when all you come by are more and more trolls. And then when ya complain on their discord, the moderators suggest buying the expansion to avoid the issue. Nice upsell /s
Town of Salem has devolved into a cesspool of unrestrained bigotry, and its report system is an absolute farce. I’ve been playing and reporting racists since 2014, only to be mocked and harassed with zero consequences for those spewing hateful filth!
It’s sickening that a game supposedly built on community interaction can’t be bothered to protect Black/ir any form of players—or any kind of ideology—from vile, repetitive hate speech. The developers clearly don’t give a damn about accountability; they’d rather ignore the problem than ban the worst offenders. If you’re thinking of playing, don’t. Save yourself the heartache of being relentlessly targeted because the creators can’t be bothered to enforce their own rules. Town of Salem is the last place anyone who values basic human decency should spend their time or money.
If you’ve ever loved the thrill of outsmarting your friends in a game of Mafia or Werewolf, then Town of Salem is your next obsession. This online multiplayer game, developed by BlankMediaGames, is a treasure trove of strategy, bluffing, and pure fun. Since its release in 2014, it has drawn in players from all over the world, including me—and let me tell you, it’s been an absolute blast.
What makes Town of Salem so addictive is the sheer variety it offers. At the start of each match, you’re assigned a random role, and the anticipation is half the fun. Will you be the brave Sheriff hunting down the Mafia, the cunning Godfather orchestrating murders, or maybe the wild-card Jester, whose goal is simply to get lynched? With over 30 unique roles, every game feels fresh and exciting.
The gameplay is split into Day and Night phases, and this is where the magic happens. By day, you’ll argue, accuse, and defend yourself in a whirlwind of chaotic chat messages. By night, you’ll quietly execute your role’s abilities—investigating, protecting, or even eliminating others. The balance between strategy and social interaction is perfect, and the unpredictability of human players keeps you on your toes.
What I love most about Town of Salem is how it brings out everyone's personality. I’ve had moments of triumph where I outwitted an entire lobby as a sneaky Serial Killer, and I’ve laughed out loud at the absurdity of being lynched as a Doctor just because I “looked suspicious.” Even when I lose, the journey is so entertaining that it hardly matters.
The community is a big part of the experience. Sure, you’ll encounter some intense players, but most are just there for a good time, and the camaraderie (or friendly betrayal) adds so much to the game.
Whether you’re a seasoned strategist or just looking for some lighthearted chaos, Town of Salem is a game that will leave you grinning, plotting, and hitting “Play Again” far too many times. Trust me—it’s worth it.
I'd like to say first that I used to play this game all the time back in the day when it was a free browser game. It used to be a lot of fun. Now it's dead. You will sit in queue forever, and a ranked game will never pop. Your only option if you ever want to play the game is to go to ranked practice. Coordinated groups will go into the lobbies and take turns leaving seconds before the game launches to stall the lobby indefinitely. The same accounts keep doing it, but the devs/mods don't ban them. Who will they ban though? They will ban long term players you've played for years for the most trivial reasons. I received a strike on my account for "leaving the game" because said that I was AFK for one single night. I appealed this strike and the power tripping useless mod tried to tell me that being afk was as good as leaving the game. I pasted the actual rule that said "don't be afk for an extended period of time." He literally responded "yes, an extended period of time. One night is an extended period of time." This C-sucker really told me 40 seconds is an extended period of time. Unbelievable. There are regularly people leaving the game early (you can expect 2 to 3 of them at least every single game). And it's filled with game throwers and trolls. They really shouldn't be able to charge money for this game. The player base is dead, the mods are horrible, and the community is horrible. Do not waste your money.
OH THIS GAME. How this game makes me want to throw my phone across the room. This game gets some getting used to in order to be considered fun imo. This is a social deduction game where you try to find the evils and lynch them before they take majority of town over. I have seen many new players in the game and let me tell you the Town of Salem community can be harsh to beginners so if you ever want to learn how to play the game I would be more than happy to help!
The game is not bad, my review goes for this new playerbase,
I am an OG player, And after a few years decided to download the game again.
The people in this game are brain dead, 0 iq, dont know what they are even doing, which ruins the entire fun of the game, and You cant go ranked because theres no players so you are stuck with classic morons. im uninstalling only for that.
This game has the most horrible community I have ever seen.
I have 90+ hours on mobile.
Playing with randoms in this game truly sucks. As with any imposter-style game, the loudest person wins the game. This isn't even Town of Salem's fault. It's the very nature of this TYPE of game. But it is completley unfair that in the RANKED mode, people are allowed to actively troll and grief games and avoid punishment from devs. People will pretend to not know the rules of the game so they can troll. They know. This is ranked. This is a ranked mode. They know. They are trolling. People ruin the integrity of games so often there is practically no point in playing anymore. Your average townie will win the game for evil classes most games. The people who play this game are either braindead with drool coming out of their mouths or trolling. It is the latter, of course.
I'm saying not recommended, not because the game is poorly made, but because the devs refuse to moderate this horrendous community. From the outside looking in, as a new player, this game looks wholesome and a bit nerdy. A good time! Among us but for grown ups! No. I had more to type but I had to delete it or the review will get striked.
If you are going to buy, get it on sale, and play with friends only. Or never care about winning.
Fun game, I like it much better than the sequel. Though I have my issues with it, it's a fun take on the social deduction genre, where there are a myriad of interesting roles to be and no one is just a boring "villager" with nothing to do (aside from maybe Survivors). I wish it had a larger playerbase, but most everyone's migrated to TOS2. Coven expansion is definitely worth it. (Coven) Town Traitor is the most interesting gamemode, but (Coven) All Any gets the most players.
if they didnt ban every single person permanently for literally everything this game would have over 1k players right now but its dead.
its a really good and unique game tho and sadly theres no alternative.
i was perma banned for a bad in game name, NEVER HAPPENED!, i have been given no chance to defend myself, the comapny that rook over this game doesnt care about its player base at all and bans without ever looking into a report, im so insulted and angry its making me wish ide never heard of this game!.
This game is better than the second. Wish it at least got a new role every couple months, but a solid game.
This is Mafia that works on potatoes, mobile and browser. It has normal, ranked training and ranked games. It tries to keep it serious about rules without taking the fun out of it.
I can argue that the game is a bit too slow in ranked and there is no forfeight vote, but its possibly for the best because people can ruin the most unlosable situations just because someone said something wrong during downtime.
It also has Coven gamemode with alternative ruleset, cosmetic microtransactions and an ability to disable said microtransactions, an ability to earn ingame currency for good sportsmanship and report players for bullshit behaviour.
One can say that devs do care about the game and amount of players is reasonable to find normal games relatively fast, but probably majority of people are playing ranked, which is why it isn't super fast.
Anyway, game is good, costs like a bag of chips.
It can also give fun scenarious like Trump as a Jester denying townies a win because their alive Investigator who leads the game is named Kamala. I shit you not it was literally a few hours ago and I wasn't even mad about it.
My friends don't want to play this game with me, they say I will sweat all over them.
Very Fun even after all these years wish it was more active tho, Good Game.
the only way i can describe this game is the song Hell ya Fucking Right by Drake
me when I get killed for claiming sheriff (I was the jester)
A good community and a very fun game. Takes a few goes to figure it out but really fun playing the different roles :)
opened game, made account, got banned before even loading in, refunding
i love this game but lobbies without gamethrowers are rare
Quality game, mechanics are what you want them to be for this genre. No complaints!
Mods be banning people and not caring trying to force players to TOS2 which sucks.
This game is a fun interactive with direct connection to players.
It's still as fun as I used to play this on browser. It pains to be a medium though as most folks disconnect & won't finish the game.
Play this game if you are into politics. Basically what you do is lying and gas lighting someone. Highly recommended. 9/11
Such a fun game! Especially if you love the game Mafia
A good idea on paper, but almost every lobby is either filled with trolls or wannabe IRS agents. Instead of ruining the lives of middle class workers, though, they've decided to make each and every lobby of Town of Salem completely uninteresting. Everyone speaks in code and just kills you if you don't understand their prose, and nobody is willing to teach you because everyone in this game is unfriendly and seems to hate their life and everybody else's, too, much like the IRS.
most of the negative reviews are by bigots, this game has fine moderation and its only "strict" if you are spewing hate speech and other bigoted nonsense, maybe dont break the rules and you wont get banned? just a thought :)
Seriously, this game is great, bigots pop up from time to time but they get swiftly dealt with by moderation, its a great experience.
great great game
Great mind game that's somehow still active after many years of being out. Some people may call it "OG among us" but either way its way better than among us. 9/10
Great social deduction game!
Game is good, people are sheep. Build credibility early and people will follow-
Kidding (kinda). This game is great. I've always loved this game and keep coming back to it, I've played it for years. If you enjoy social deduction this is def for you. There's a learning curve (as there is for all games) but once you get over learning what every role does, it's so fun to use your knowledge to be deceptive. Every game is different and all endings are limitless. Favorite mode is All Any for a very random experience. Highly recommend to anyone, even just to try it out.
This game is great to teach you exactly how stupid the average person is. And man is it way worse than you think.
Probably the most toxic and stupid community in gaming history.
If you're a racist or like being with stupid people you're gonna be in good company. Moderation seems non-existent. Enjoy your game thrower every other game. The other games will be with people calling themselves the n word in the lobby. It wasn't always like that, but it is now.
Town of Salem expands on the classic Mafia formula with more roles and complex strategies. While it’s engaging, the added mechanics can overwhelm newcomers, making it less accessible than the simpler original.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Amazing game 8/10 Hillaries
My pillion loves this game.
Was amazing when it came out, now the lobbies take ages to fill so I don't play it anymore, you may have better luck if you're on American time
Obsessed with this cheap little game.
lol better than the 2nd one
Great game! Lie and deceive people or work together and find the evil players. Great way to test your ability to see through lies or lie to others. Played this for many years, TOS1 will always beat TOS2. Do not play TOS2
Honestly love this game, but i am so fed up of being banned for leaving games because i cant be asked with gamethrowers and yet the throwers continue to play. i have played this game for years and you always have the same issue. nothing happens to throwers i would gladly be a monitor, this is honestly one of my favourite games but you go through a stage where you have bots stopping lobbies and then gamethrowers. their are so many roles you could create to make the throwers stop
vrery good
dies on n1 every game :,)
Haven't played in months but came back to a permanent ban, can't create a new account. No reason quoted. Steam refuse to refund.
