A minimalist physics puzzle game. Kind of charming
Main criticism: the physic was feeling to much non-deterministic.. which lead to some tedious trial and error situations in which I had to blame the game. '^^ But still..
It's a bit tedious but when you solve the level nonetheless.. it feels awesome ;)

I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
I cant even get past level one. No fun.
5/10

Edit June 2021: After trying it again all these years later it magically works now, the game hasn't been updated but my PC specs had changed, buy at your own risk.
Old June 2017: Game does not work for me and many others (specs on profile if you click view more info) developer says "I think it just not compatible with your current system configurations". my system got fresh install of windows 10 on the 10th of June 2017, when I first tried to launch the game I had installed and changed almost nothing on my new system. I have 1.4 hours on record after just leaving it idle after it crashed hoping maybe it would start working but sadly no..
I would refund this game but don't want the 2 hour card drop limit so writing this review hoping for a fix.
You REALLY SHOULDN'T play Inside the Gear.
I don't remember how much I paid (I'm sure it was on sale though), and I don't think it was worth it. At under a $1, it might be low enough that I wouldn't care so much. But really, save your money.
The Short:
- Puzzle concepts are definitely interesting and potentially challenging
- Physics game with higly questionable physics (absurd at times)
- No mouse or controller support
- Sound is awful (but there is always mute)
- Name suggests something more mechanical than actual experience
Quick Tips:
- If at first you don't succeed, try again, or you know, just hit the button again and get different results with the same setup.
- Using your brain is important ... just maybe not for this game.
The Long:
Oh, where to begin ... how about by looking at the few positives:
- Cheap -> Even at full price the game is $5 (USD). Some people might even consider that price as a 'throw away' game. I, on the other hand, don't think it's worth that price, and you get very limited gameplay. Took me 2.5 hours to finish all the levels (I did get stuck twice and I wouldn't say I enjoyed those 2.5 hours), and there's no replay value, achievements, anything really.
- Challenging -> The puzzles themselves are actually quite good in concept and difficulty level, but there isn't a logical organization to the difficulty so you'll go from a puzzle where you get stuck to a puzzle that is extremely simple. A learning curve sequence would have made more sense.
- Laughs -> Did have a couple of good laughs at how the lifesaver (it looks more like a lifesaver candy than a gear) reacted in different situations.
Alright, there really wasn't much else to compliment, on to the problems.
I can't accurately describe how disappointed I am with my purchase of Inside the gear.
- Physics -> Or rather, the altered physics governing the game. I understand that we don't know the material properties of the objects in question, but even taking that into account doesn't excuse the atrocious interaction of the objects with 'physics'. Not even gravity works correctly or consistently in the game...
- Solutions -> Many of the puzzles gave the impression that solving them involved a lot less of using any kind of physics and more just positioning the objects where the dev intended.
- Consistency -> Relates to the other items as well. But when playing a physics game and there are no changing variables (wind speed for instance), then the same setup should yield the same results. This is not the case with this game. Using the exact same setup will yield either the same, similar or even WILDLY DIFFERENT results... WTF?
- Sounds -> They are pretty bad, and if you choose to mute them, you'll miss out on clues to whether the lifesaver is still moving or not.
[*] Controls -> No controller or mouse support. Not the worst thing in the world, but does make things more frustrating. There is also no way to 'fine tune' the position of the items. Had the rest of the game been enjoyable, I would not have cared about this.
If you made it through all that, congrats. And thank you. Hopefully this helped you out in some way, shape or form to not suffer with Inside the Gear.
one of the best $5 games i've ever played! i wish they had more levels!
Awesome game! I had a great time! Wasn't super fancy or anything but the idea-the gameplay-was neat. Great job! (Always wanted to do stuff like that when kid. Make a game out of something basic. Bounce something off this, throw something over there...good times!!)
i love puzzles, but the real puzzle is:
why i buy this game
there will be a documentary about it someday.
Good indie puzzle game. Controls aren't as precise as it can be that's why everyone is talking about it.
Maybe put something like SHIFT + (movekey) to make objects move much more precisely.
Enjoyed the game though :)
Nice potential, but falls short.
There are a total of 25 levels, and most of them are disappointingly easy. There are a few that offer a good challenge. Basically finished this in a single evening.
The levels never get very complicated, unfortunately, by that I mean that you will only ever, at most, have 3 different pieces to play around with. There was potential for bigger maps and more pieces to turn it into some difficult rube-goldberg-machine craziness but that never happened.
Also, no music.
Inside the Gear is a good 'addictive' puzzle game to keep your brain ticking over, despite being frustrating (in a fun way) at times because you can't pass a certain level. It's pretty fun figuring out totally outrageous ideas to get a level accomplished that you would never have thought of at the start and very very satisfying when you finally pass a level.
The game did crash a couple of times (Windows XP) and froze me out but I didn't have to start the levels all over again, it saved my progress when I rebooted it. The whole game is a bit short though with only 25 levels, I completed the game in around 3-4 hours. It could be a little bit more polished but it isn't really that expensive so you can't expect everything. I didn't find the controls too bad, although some reviews have said they are rubbish and the in game sounds do get a little annoying.
Overall it's a fun but short game, I personally think it's worth the money and all in all was pretty happy with it. Highly recommend downloading the free demo first with 4 levels to play, therefore if you like it you will most likely buy the complete game. 7/10
Pros:
- the graphics are decent
- challenging puzzles
- simple gameplay
- cheap
Cons:
- sounds are very annoying (no options)
- phyiscs are unnatural (wheel rolling downhill shouldn't lose speed) and glitchy (if your gear falls over, it will hop around and make a terrible noise)
- feels like a school project someone threw together in Unity
3/10 - Even on sale at $4.94 (CAD), I feel like I got ripped off. I've played better Flash-based physics puzzle games.
I'm not sure what I expected from this game... The objestive is very simple, move the round object to the platform with the other objects. Sounds simpe right, well not all the time. There is close to no intructions so you will have to figure it out, and zero options. It would be nice to at least have the options for sound and a choice between windowed/fullscreen.
The gameplay is just ok, background is boring and the sounds are mute worthy.
Overall I would like to see more
