The market for cheap little abstract puzzle games is large, and this game is at most average. So I would only recommend it to insatiable puzzle game lovers who have already played through all the really good ones.

The basic idea is sound, and it's not one that has been overused. There are a number of lasers in a square grid and a number of targets to which you must redirect the light, using various tools that you can place in the grid. The main complication is that each laser, and each target, has one of 7 colors: red, green, blue, a combination of two of these, or white.

Up to the point where I lost interest, I found the puzzles OK though not very inspiring. It is not clear to me why this 2D game is presented in 3D form. In my opinion, the effort should have gone into making the various tools clearly distinguishable instead. As it is, they basically all look like white balls that differ from each other only on second sight.

Unfortunately I got too bored by the tutorial to continue right after it, wasn't really motivated to return sooner than about a month later or so, and then felt I didn't want to play this game, after all. The balance between the challenge of the puzzle itself and the challenge of understanding the rules and interface again just wasn't right. If I ever see a 2D reimplementation with more visual polish and revised puzzles, I will seriously consider it, though.

The best part, well not the best, but the most surprising to me was how the challenge progressed. Great design.

A good logic game which uses light paths to solve different levels. The game does a pretty good job of mixing things up as you go through the different chapters. The difficulty can be a little uneven at times but getting to the end should give you a good brain workout, especially if you are focusing on getting clean solutions.

I got my money's worth with this one! Hours and hours of puzzling. I like being able to toggle between a 2D and 3D views. The variety of logic gates confused me at first. I've played through this a couple times, and still have to peek at the guide for some levels.

Prelogate is one of the most underrated puzzle games I have ever played. It is a logic puzzle game similar to the programming-oriented titles such as Spacechem and Human Resource Machine. Honestly, I enjoy this game more than both of those titles. The length and difficulty are a lot higher than Human Resource Machine while the interface and mechanics of the game are more casual and simplistic than Spacechem. The best part is that unlike some other games in this genre, it is entirely graphical and very easy to learn with no programming background required.

After playing the game for eighteen hours, I have finally reached the last chapter, and I am so hooked on the gameplay that I have no desire to stop playing even when I hit a wall. Prelogate consists of ten chapters and while some chapters are quick and easy, the difficulty increases significantly about halfway through the game. The most difficult chapters I found were 4, 5, and 10. There were numerous instances in which I thought the game was a bit too easy, but Chapter 10 blew that notion out of the water. Even now, I am still stuck on the third level of the last chapter, so close to the end of the game yet so far.

Since this is a niche title and not a mainstream puzzle game like Portal 2, it really isn't for everyone so you are most likely going to either love it or hate it. The expert puzzle gamers might consider this game to be mediocre compared to games like TIS-100 and Spacechem, but as an intermediate puzzle gamer who is not a professional programmer, I found this title to be much more accessible than many of its counterparts. If you are interested in logic-based puzzle games but you don't have the coding background to enjoy the more technical programming-based games, Prelogate serves as a great starting point and makes for an enjoyable experience.

If anyone out there loves laser puzzles and logic gates, this right here is your jam. If lasers and logic aren't your thing there's nothing to recommend it, but if that's your wheelhouse holy shit it's a good game, especially during a sale you really can't go wrong.

I'm about half way through playing this, and I haven't been able to put it down since getting it at the Summer Sale. If you liked the laser beam-path games from about 10 years ago you're going to enjoy this very much. It's worth getting at full price, and definitely worth it at a discount. In addition to solving each level, there's the challenge of optimizing your solution and checking the leader boards to see how you stack up. And it has Steam acheivements.

Definitely worth the two bucks I payed for it.

Edited to add: Finished the game (all 64 levels) after a total of 30 h of playing time. Haven't gotten all the achievements yet for clean solutions, but did find an Easter Egg. Forgot to mention earlier that the ambient music is quite good, sort of like the game Defcon.

Elegant minimalist path-finding puzzler, with the extra touches of combining and splitting the laser beams and having some puzzles with multiple layouts that all have to be fulfilled by a single solution. Runs well on Linux.

+ Excellent puzzle/logic game manipilating light beams.
+ Starts simple and gets complicated quick.
+ Relaxing, soothing background music, a good wind down after a stressful day but the music can be turned off.

Details: Light transmiter devices must be routed to the correct light receiver devices.
~Mirror devices change beam directions.
~Simple splitter devices expand a single beam into multiple beams.
~Specialty splitter devices seperate a white beam into seperate color beams or the reverse.
~To achieve the highest scores use the least number of devices and the shortest beam lengths.
~But if this still sounds too easy, some levels require solutions for multiple steps in which the light transmiter devices send different colors or none at all and their counterpart light receiver devices require receiving different colors or none at all.
~Oh yeah, did I mention the logic gates?

Abstract

This game is quite the mind bender. In fact, it bends your mind so much you may swear you can hear it screaming for you to stop. Prelogate is pretty much what it says on the main page; A game that uses lasers and mirrors to solve complex problems. The game itself is pretty straight-forward in that you just have to solve the puzzles. The music selection is slow and ambient, which is nice, but felt grating at some points. There's a...sorta plot, but at the same time its not entirely a plot. While the game itself is a challenge, it gets to a point where the challenge is excessive and one relies more on solution codes than spending 3 hours on one stage. While I would recommend it, it's not something I'd recommend to just anyone.

Gameplay

The gameplay is, as said before, using lasers and mirrors. Cool, right? Who doesn't like using lasers for weird stuff? Unfortunately, the fun part wears off pretty quickly. The game starts with simple mirrors and lasers, relying on reflection and splitting to get to an endpoint. This lasts for a few levels before the game introduces logic gates; IF, OR, AND, XOR. Naturally, anyone with a smidge of computer science learning, or fumbling around in programming, knows what these are. So it's rather an unhappy moment when you realize these logic gates don't really...feel like they belong. Sure you know how they work because of the small text window, but that's all you get. You have to figure out how they work entirely in the levels they give it to you, because it does not get esaier after this point. It is here you realize the game is about to turn from difficulty curve into a full blown Kleiner's bottle of difficulty; no matter how hard you climb, you never really escape it. Solutions become downright maddening just to clear one step out of eight. Again, it is here you start to rely more on solution codes than actually working it out.

Music

It's there, sure. It's pretty basic, nice space-like ambience to make you feel relaxed. Which doesn't help because this game needs you to fire all cylinders in your brain. Strange how that works.

Plot

The game has some...interesting mechanics outside of the actual game. However, these interesting mechanics are simply superficial; They're there to just sit there and look nice. You can interact with the pre-level UI in some ways, but it doesn't really do much. Can't explore who you are, why you're there, what kinda people are working with you. It's just for kicks. Part of me thinks it was going to be a part of something larger, but was scrapped for reasons unknown. While the over-arching plot is you making AI systems with lasers, I felt like there could've been a little more.

Overall

I personally just could not enjoy the game after getting halfway through it. The logic gates really made the puzzles far more mind-bending than they deserved to be and the unfortunate reality to feel like I was too stupid to figure it out for myself, let alone for the rest of the game, really gave me a terrible taste in my mouth. The game does what it sets out to do, and does it well. That said, don't be surprised if you fall short of what the puzzles ask for and end up flailing hopelessly because you just don't entirely understand it. Thankfully, the pricetag is quite an enticing factor, so even if you don't really like it, 3$ for 64 levels of puzzles is a pretty rad deal.

I'm reluctantly recommending it on the off-chance people are masochistic and love a good challenge. Don't say I didn't warn you!

I rather like this game. The early levels are a bit easy but it's nice to have the opportunity to get to know each new part and use them several ways before the more complex and surprisingly difficult later levels. Part of what I found really fun an interesting is that there are times that you must use simple gates to create more complex one. Like, for instance, using xnor's to make other logic gates. There is real world practicality in figuring out these problems, as these types of puzzles are at the heart of computer and electronics technology and some of the very same challenges faced in real-world engineering. The relaxing motif and approachable presentation make it a rather fun diversion.

It's probably one of the hardest puzzle games I've played (I'm not a big fan of the genre though, but I like riddles and spend time solving them every now and then). Sometimes it makes you wonder if the options that you have aren't limited due to a bug... But then you find out that you still have something to learn about the mechanics. Simple, yet tricky to solve.

It feels like it's been released too early, but I don't mind. The riddles are what this game is about and they are good, so who cares that graphics are quite primitive and the "story" texts are repetitive and boring? Not me. Especially, considering the low price.

Prelogate is quite what it says on the tin. "Solve puzzles by redirecting laser beams, mixing them and controlling them with logic gates." There is really no better way to put it. If that sounds like something you'd play, go ahead!

Even so, though, I only reluctantly recommend this game. While the concept is certainly sound, the level design is rather flawed. Some levels in the later parts of the game, for example, are extremely forced (in that there's only really one solution that's completely obvious) and are therefore a waste of time. Others are repeats of these "extremely forced" levels. Furthermore, said levels are often placed AFTER levels with much harder solutions.

Furthermore, there are a few gates that would REALLY help the game: for example, a "MIX ONLY IF THERE ARE TWO INPUTS" or a "LET COLOUR THROUGH IF NO INPUT" gate. It's really annoying to keep constructing these gates manually in each level that needs them.

Finally, the game allows a 2D mode, but if you're playing some of the later levels (with raised blocks), this makes the game impossible to play. Likewise, many "colourblind mode tags" are obscured by "incorrect input" tags on 2D mode.

If you can look past these problems, then at heart it is a good game flawed by implementation.

Prelogate is a puzzle game in which you attempt to direct a series of lasers to their designated output, while using logic design in order to be able to compensate for various combinations of inputs and expected outputs. Lasers can be one of three primary colors (red, blue, green), and outputs can be any combination of those outputs, allowing for a number of difficult scenarios.

Lasers are manipulated through the use of mirrors, "mixers" which combine lasers, "splitters" which act as mirrors but also allow the laser through, "diffusers" which take input on every side and send out on every side, "prisms" which take white lasers and split them into the three primary colors, and logical AND, OR IF and XOR gates.

In addition to the general "find a solution" challenge, there are a series of other challenges relating to number of items used, length of lasers, and whether or not you have any "dangling" lasers which don't connect to anything.

The UI can be a little cramped on lower resolutions, but there's a lot of variety in how to approach the problems (fully rotatable, can be tuned into a top-down 2D view, etc). All in all, this is an excellent puzzle game which is well worth the asking price. Think of it as a game which is to logic design the same way Spacechem is to programming. I had to crack out K-maps for the first time since college, and it was delightful.

Exceptional programming puzzle game. Instead of finding a single solution, you build your very own solution. Later puzzles can get very tricky when you have limited space, but everything is solvable if you think and plan hard enough. After you have solved everything, you can optimize your solutions further to enhance certain aspects like f.e. the number of used devices. If you are competitive enough, you can add a lot of play time this way while climbing up the leaderboards, and I am far from done with 17 hours played.

However, this game is not for everyone. You need a strong analytical mind to have fun here. If you enjoyed SpaceChem, TIS-100 and/or Infinifactory (you will most likely know these games if you belong to the target audience), you will enjoy this one as well.

I didn't know I wanted this until I saw it in the store and all the memories of old school laser-bouncing games came back...

DEFINITELY worth the <$4 cost. Worth more than that, honestly.

Redirect lasers to their endpoints, combine colors together, use gates and mixers and prisms to build logic games and solve multi-step puzzles.

The difficulty ramps up pretty severely but the game only gets more satisfying.

A great game for those who prefer a more relaxed, thought-provoking experience. It's very simple to begin with - just a few components and a tutorial - and becomes more and more diffucult as you progress through the levels, as you'd expect from any decent game.

However, I feel that the game has a rather steep learning curve (e.g. you aren't told that you can't place parts on dark tiles) and the logic gates aren't explained.

Overall though, a decent experience and definitely worth the investment!

It's Spacechem with lasers.
Not as polished, and there's some difficulty spikes, but it's still a pretty good puzzle game that allows for multiple solutions.

For the price, if you're even remotely interested, I'd say buy it.
