RIGHT BACK TO THE 90'S . AMAZING DETAIL AND DEPTH OF GAME. WORKS SMOOTHLY THROUGH STEAM. THANKS
I would definitely recommend this game it has come out before I was born. the depth and realism of it is great even tho its retro as long as you can get past the old old graphics I really do recommend this game
10/10
Would lose my whole platoon defending a point again!
Unlike 1942: The Pacific Air War or Task Force 1942: Surface Naval Action in the South Pacific this game lacks a tutorial.
The game system when you have three screens without the ability to go full screen on one, seriously impairs the game experience.
it is good!
This is an old game from the early half of the 90s. It was marketed as a simulation and I remember waiting with great anticipation for the game's release. It was very ambisious for its day. In my opinion it is a tactical/opeational game, with some First Person hands on feel, which may justify it being called a simulation, but for me it never really was a simulation, and definately not by today's standards. The learning curve is high, and I found then, and now, that the frustraion level is reached by many gamers before the game is mastered. I eventually learned to enjoy the game as I was raised in the 60s and 70s with board games from Avalon Hill, and I found this game to be an animated board game with first person feel of the "simulation" especially at the time when computer gaming was still novel. This is one game I would like to see remade with today's graphics, computer technology, and with and internet multiplayer option Remember, we did not have the internet when this game was first released. For a $1.74, it is worth having in your Steam Library, for that occasional traveling back to another era of computer gaming.
beware this game just as xrays at ure dentist can give u cancer. :P waste of time and money i had expected more from microprose luckily i didnt buy it 20 years ago at full price ;).
really dated,goodbye game
Game is a lot worse than I remember, must have been wearing those rose tinted glasses
Positives
+ Fighting in a tank at the same time as commanding the force is a fun concept
+ Campaign gives a sense of progression
+ Interesting time period and combatants
+ Reasonable depth (unit variety and off map support for example)
Negatives
- Fighting from your tank is a lot less fun than you might think given the tiny screen. You'll be shot across the map without seeing what killed you.
- Interface is bad (want to cancel an ongoing artillery barrage to save your suicidal tanks? Nope)
- Interface is bad (want to know how long until your artillery barrage is ready again? Nope. You're not allowed to know that)
- Interface is horrible (want to see a company's waypoints? You have to hit the company info button on the toolbar, navigate to the company with the left and right arrows, then hit waypoints, then hunt around the platoon map for the lines because they don't appear on the strategic map)
- Interface is really horrible (want to give your army a simple move order? How about setting your army's starting orders from the same screen you deploy them? Nope, you have to give each company individual orders, and you have to quickly cancel the automatic starting orders if you want control over how the engagement proceeds from the start)
- The AI of your units is completely unpredictable. Will the "assault" order make your company chase the enemy across the map, turn around and flee, drive in circles, or scatter in every direction? Roll a dice! It could be any of these!
- Combat is completely unpredictable. There're no indications as to which units can see the enemy or even what the range of their weapons is. Foot infantry can defeat medium tanks.
- The pathfinding is almost braindead. Your units often head in the opposite direction to the waypoint you gave them. They will rush into enemy units when you told them to stay still. They will move around a forest when you told them to take the road going through it.
This game gave me flashbacks
10/10 would invade Poland again
JUST DO IT!
:D
Pretty awesome game. Plenty of replayablility, reminds me of the days of Red Barron and Aces Over Europe with the old permadeath and persistant campagins. Manual can be found online with a quick google search for those who are bitching about it. For the price it's a nice trip back to the days of old.
An interesting looking game with neat music and features, but I don't know what the f*ck I'm even doing... clicking random buttons.
If you've never played this before, good luck getting the concept down.
1/10
This is an interesting one, i have a real fondness for this game, it was trying to be like Harpoon but for ww2 western front tank combat. unless you have a love for retro games and all the difficulties they present UI wise some of them, you wont like this one. It offers the option to play at just a platoon level up to companies and battalions - at the platoon level, there is no much you can do. You can deviate from teh rest of the company but if you do so you will likely be destroyed as soon as you come across the enemy. it offers a 3d sim window but it is a novelty at most- you wont be able to get close enough to see the enemy before they destroy you, so its better to leave gunnery up to the AI unless you are with alot of support.
a battle can be confusing as to what unit you are in, at first, but you get the hang of it. the ai on all sides will go back forth on the battlefield as morale and loss dictate though it can just look like every unit is just running around like a headless chicken. despite all the flaws, i like teh game for what it is trying to offer and it can play as a strategy game, though if you wnat something more current then go with Graviteam Tactics Operation Star or the Close Combat games
Brings back a lot of good memories. This game was amazing when it first came out, in the heyday of Close Combat and Panzer General. This game isn't the easiest and it sure ain't the purtiest nowadays, but if you love World War 2 strategy with BN/CO level leadership thrown in, then I highly recommend this game. If you're more of a quick game/or pretty graphics type though then this probably will disappoint you.
i really wanted this game to work-very fond memories of the origional-it doesn't!! small screens and no manual make things worse-you really need to be a BIIIG fan of retro gaming to chance this ,even at leess than four quid : (
The game has a few nice concepts but it does not seem to be very playable by today's standards.
Consider this more as a collectors item.
Old DOS game and unless you like old DOS games, strategy games, and commanding Panzer Lehr you can go heck yourself
Game's great tho
