About the Game

Rise to Ruins is at heart a godlike village simulator, but it also throws in plenty of familiar game play mechanics from classic real-time strategy and resource management games like Black and White, Settlers, ActRaiser and many others. It also throws in some twists by melding in some tower defense and survival elements in an attempt to create a new kind of godlike village simulator. The goal is to try to bridge the gap between the depth and complexity of traditional village simulators, the fun of godlikes and tower defense, with the simplicity of real-time strategy games.

Build A Village, and Die Trying!

A major part of the game is village management, and trying to discover new and creative ways to use the tools at your disposal to keep yourself alive as long as possible while you defend your village at night from the raging hoard of monsters, and try to expand in the day time. In this game, you will lose frequently, but with every failure you learn a little bit more about how to survive and apply that knowledge to your next attempt.

Frequent 100% Free Content Patches!

Like getting new content and not having to pay for it? Well, this is the game for you. For years Rise to Ruins had gotten frequent and completely free content patches, expanding the base game regularly!

Several Game Modes

Survival is the game the way it was meant to be played, as a brutal survival style village sim, you will probably die often trying to figure out the best way to survive, but that's half the fun right?!

Traditional is very similar to Survival, but it's balanced much like a traditional village simulator with some godlike and RTS elements sprinkled on top. The monster spawn rates are much lower, and the main focus is keeping your village happy and fed. It's a very easy mode, designed for casual players, or players just wanting to experiment.

Nightmare makes survival mode look like it's for carebears. Mostly, it's just like survival mode, but difficulty levels are ramped up through the roof. This is the masochist's mode.

Peaceful is the mode for you if you want to play a more laid back, classic village management game. There are no monsters what so ever, and no need to defend people. Just chill out and try to keep your villagers alive.

Sandbox, like the name implies, is a mode where you can play around with the game mechanics. Change the time of day, weather, spawn monsters or villagers, or even edit the map while you're playing on it. This is the ultimate "Screw around" mode for players wanting to play with the game mechanics.

Custom allows you to make up your own mode. You can adjust day length, how many days in a season, how many monsters spawn, and all sorts of other things. If you don't like the game's default settings, make your own up!.

Godlike Elements

Not only can you manage your village, but you also have many godlike abilities at your disposal. You can alter the terrain, blast enemies from afar, pick up objects or creatures, heal your villagers, speed up resource growth and all sorts of other fun godly stuff. You're part of this world just as much as your villagers are.

Tower Defense Elements

This isn't a tower defense game, but you'll still be getting some tower defense vibes from it! Use classic tower defense mechanics to defend your village at night, creating walls of towers behind maze walls to help keep your little villagers alive as long as possible, and if tower defense isn't your thing. That's ok! You can also raise an army of golems and recruit guards to defend the village.

World Maps and Regions!

The game has tons of hand made maps for you to select from (You can also make your own if you like!) Every biome follows a certain theme (Forest, Desert, Drylands, etc). Start your village anywhere you like, and slowly conquer the whole world! (Well, try to anyway, you'll probably just die.)

The Soundtrack!

A full original soundtrack, made by Bibiki Garcia that blends orchestral instruments in a way fans of old 1990s era PC gaming will love and remember!

First off, a warning. This game is brutally hard, and should not be considered if what you want is a casual game. If you've played other difficult colony sim games then you'll probably like this. While the game does offer some tips regarding the gameplay mechanics it should be noted that there are no tutorials.

Much like dwarf fortress, you need to be very attentive to what tasks you have your villagers doing, and some professions/buildings don't work exactly like you think they would. Organizers are the haulers of the game, builders will haul stuff to build sites, but they're terrible at it. Regular villagers generally won't defend themselves, so you'll need to start building towers/support buildings very early. Farms are basically a place to assign people to the farmer profession, you'll want to make sure there's some nearby wild crops.

Once you've got the basics down, it's a very fun and ever-challenging game

I really tried to like this game on Survival in its current state which is probably the last state. It is "the way the game is meant to be played", as the description says. Yet, as one of the streamers noted, "the game requires a very strong attention to detail". Moreover, it punishes you when you are not attentive.

Some players like unfair punishment, and this game may be for you if you are one of them. It has a good technical state for an indie game and has a lot of fun mechanics. I get a cursor problem in fullscreen, yet the game can be played in a window to mitigate that. There are pretty visual effects. The price is not steep.

It does not have saves. Bro, in 2024 even Dwarf Fortress has saves. The game does have an emergency pause. This is not a pause I want for a strategy game. I want to carefully examine the situation without a rush. The game has a customly designed pixel font which is very small and hard to read. I consider all this as a form of punishment.

About gameplay.

Can you just spam your spells? No, the game punishes you with a constant drain of "total faith", and you have to help your villages to maintain it. There were a few other impressive actions you have to learn, I know they exist (based on my total faith), yet I have not discovered them yet. On the other side, you get a massive faith decrease when your villager dies.

Do you think you can get food flow from farms? No, farmers are only good at picking up the wild crops. You have to regrow the crops via magic. The information like this is quite hard to come by. People say, "Just build 10 farms". No, you cannot do that on Survival and get profit.

These two mechanics are the worst because even if you backup your savefile by copying it, you cannot win against constant resource drain.

There are some other scenarios when a save backup would help. I sent your villagers to build something near the front line. They decide to attack a graveyard instead. A squad of elite enemy units teleports and destroys my villagers. My total faith is 200 after that, I cannot cast most spells, including the food spell.

The guide says, "to move enemy back build the wall, the line of catapults, the line of fire pits, repeat". I believe this may work. The point is I'm not really interested in repeating this process 10 times to clean the map.

The description says, "Survival has a steep learning curve". No, it does not have a learning curve. You learn to reset the world after each mistake because mistakes are not recoverable. The guides on the game and YouTube walkthroughs are mediocre.

Probably if I have only game to play, I play and learn all its quirkiness and maybe even master it. But today I just switch to another game.

Impossible. You can have 5000 water available but your villager die en masse of dehydration. You can have scores of ammunition but the villagers don't reload towers. You can have dozens of rangers but they all hang out far, far away from the outposts. You can have dozens of builders and one particular building set at top priority but they build it last. You can have thousands of food available but the villagers, despite the 'in game tip' that hungry villagers will go to desperate measure to find food, die of starvation anyway. You can have many fully staffed altars to generate influence but there is no one there when night comes, leaving all your influence-dependent buildings empty.

There is no way to succeed at this game even on the easy settings. The mechanics of the villagers and their tasks are fundamentally flawed. The tooltips lie. Balance is obscenely skewed. The game is either designed to make you fail or it wasn't designed at all.

It's a give or take. This is fun building and tower defense against enemy that just gets stronger and stronger little by little with some rogue like elements.
Problem is, that every map is the same. You start a base, build required buildings and survive long enough to start another base on another part of the map.

Player starts and selects where to place main base and from that you need to expand your influence. Influence is where you can actually build.
Main goal is to survive a year of game time, that is four weeks in different annual seasons.
You build required food, defense manufacturing you need and you slowly get more people to join in and some are given birth to.

Buildings work at minimum of 1 worker, but obviously it works slower then. You can also upgrade buildings to make them more efficient and house more workers. During upgrade process building is fully operational, so you can set them to be upgraded right away.
Eventually they get fully built.
Depending of building they have few upgrades and upgrade paths you can choose.
Like defensive towers can be upgraded to have different elements in them.

Everyone needs a home, food, water and tools, armor and weapons to work there and it's up to player to find the way to handle all the needs. In the beginning it will be hard to handle, but as you progress you will get better, but you will also get bonuses.
Here comes the roguelike element into play.

You will need to doom the world you have every now and then and all the progress you've made will be erased. Except experience, which will grant you chests you open and you get various beneficial bonuses from them.
You open the chests from main map menu. This is also where you select smaller regions you can enter to try to control them.

Problem is, it's every map the same, only the layout changes how you start depending of the region you choose.
You don't even work together with different regions other than you can send material and people from controlled regions to another.
You need to send enough people and material to an empty region if you want to try to control and build bases in them.

When sending something you can only send certain amount of people per day, Maximum amount of people you can send per day is based on how many immigration buildings you've built. If you send more you just have to wait until all possible people have been sent.

When you've played one map, you can expect the same thing to be done in every other map as well.

And the enemy. Player has one day to set up starting point until enemy just appears at somewhere in the map.
Enemy influence keeps growing no matter what and even if you manage to repress enemy base and influence area to disappear, it appears somewhere else on the map, where player has no influence at all.
And it is not possible to easily 100% cover a region with your influence, if not at all.
And enemy can get so strong in longer run if you linger in one region too long, that one unit can literally destroy everything you have.
There is no end to enemy.

So many thing are fun in this, but in the end, it is just a basic survive tower defense base building that offered little changes in the end.

A long term village management & tower defense game with pretty graphics and godly powers.

You assign jobs to your villagers and they automatically do the jobs on the assigned area.
It gets complicated enough for you to always learn throughout your playthrough and it will take 2-4 settlements for you to understand how to set things up correct.

Offers a bunch of Towers to defend your settlement but in the end, corruption always win. So there's no other option than migrating to a different region while your old settlement tries to survive as long as they can.

Yeah, this is that kind of game. Simple to play, difficult to master, and something about it keeps drawing you in. Even after losing the game again and again. But that's by its design. Winning is keeping everything running for one more hour than the last.

Rise to Ruins – The Game Where Your Village Survives (Mostly) Because of You 🏰✨

If you've ever wanted to play god over a village full of adorably doomed people, Rise to Ruins is calling your name! 😂🌄 By day, you're the benevolent overseer, building up your little slice of paradise, managing resources, and keeping the villagers happy. By night? Well, you're desperately throwing up walls and praying those defenses hold against hordes of terrifying creatures that think your village looks like a buffet. 🍽️

What makes Rise to Ruins such a gem is the blend of tower defense with a god game. You’re not just micromanaging; you’re actively guiding, protecting, and occasionally (or frequently) resurrecting your villagers. It's brutal, funny, and, yes, sometimes even heartwarming.

It’s challenging, quirky, and has that "just one more night" feeling down to a science. Honestly, if you enjoy games like Black & White or RimWorld, you're in for a treat with this one. Embrace your inner god (or disaster manager) and see if your village can truly rise to ruins! 🏡🔥

Not a bad game, it can be fun entertainment if say the internet is out or you can't run any heavy programs on your pc for (x) reason, but overall its alright.

Its got good mindless fun, that has a bit of a challenge to it tower defense with colony management. But thats kinda where it ends. The only real challenge is what map and difficulty you're on. once you got your first village going getting all the others is pretty easy since its now faster with a supply line and extra people whenever.

Its basically cookie clicker in a way where you're just watching number go up after the first couple of maps.
There's no real sense of progression outside of god powers which if you know what you're doing are insanely busted.

Kinda wish buildings/enemies/corruption got harder as you progress to difficult map areas but that's not really the case. Everything is unlocked instantly from the get go and its just a matter of getting the people and resources built up which is just time.

Verdict: Buy one sale, def not worth a 15 dollar price tag, 7-8 dollars fits the bill more

When I play Tower defence games, I am basically enjoying watching brainless AI units get destroyed by my gradually improved/upgraded defence structures. It is brutal and not that complex, apart from knowing what to upgrade and when, more or less. That is the fun of that. I don't want it to be too clever. I'm not too fussy - there are lots of tower defence games that work for me.

When I play city-builders or other management type games I am enjoying the complexity. I don't like it dumb. My favourite city builders are Workers and Resources Soviet Republic, Amazing Cultivation Simulator, or, especially, Songs of Syx. I want it deep and complex and I want it to reward my brain cells, not kiil them as so many supposedly complex games do these days.

Rise to Ruins, somehow manages to engage the part of me that wants brainless, along with the part that likes complex, and gets them to play nicely with each other. It is a fragile arrangement, on occasion, when playing my brain will spasm with a "why is the AI so stupid?" but mostly it works. Because undead, mostly.
Also it is, I think, a very cleverly designed game, there are in-game lore reasons why things are as they are and if you cllick with that it is a very fun game with hidden depths.

RtR is a game that I am really happy I have in my library because when I need that particular mix of game-play elements it is really fun.
If you have ever found yourself wondering what game to play, and not quite fancying any of the tower defence games or city builders in your library - this game might be just the thing. Certainly I have found nothing else like it.
I recommend it, works great in linux and if you have problems the dev is very responsive and helpful.

fun colony builder with territory mechanics & tons of lil easter eggs. dev is very responsive on their discord, and will help out if you get a bugged savefile.

highly recommend going to the unstable version- its not that unstable, and the achievement system + new mana mechanics make things a lot more driven and balanced. the difficulty settings are also highly customizeable, and if traditional is too hard for you, you can go in and adjust it for a custom setting somewhere between peaceful and standard. updates are far and few between, but this is basically a full release game as is.

looking forward to modding support!

Fantastic game if you like RTS and tower defense. Unfortunately, the dev has abandoned it.

I bought the game years ago, when updates actually released still. I understand that life gets in the way of things. The development cycle would make for a good read if you have the time to dig it up. IIRC, he had cancer, went bankrupt, hit it big on stocks, promised a bunch, delivered half, and announced a new game that hasn't gone anywhere.

I recently picked up Rimworld and was immediately reminded of Rise to Ruins. I've easily blown past my time played and I have no signs of stopping. It's a shame that you can get significantly more mileage out of Rimworld, especially with the DLC and mods. Your run doesn't die in Rimworld just because time has dragged on long enough. You're not punished for maximizing your efficiency, barring the FPS drops a large settlement has. Development never made it far enough to maximize the unique mechanics offered, and the basics are better expressed by a game that did put in the work.

I absolutely believe this game could have been a hidden gem. It's only lacking enough development to chip it out of the stone it was left buried in.

The game feels unfinished. I played a single map and more or less hit a stalemate with the enemy forces. I feel like I explored most of the game content and as it turns out, a lot of it is irrelevant and the real strategy is about putting down lights as these stop the enemy territory expanding. It doesn't really seem like you can beat them though either.
It's not clear what the other maps are about or how they relate to the first one as it seems like you could/would just continue playing indefinitely on one map. I think it took me two different installs to get to this amount of hours which probably says quite a lot

It didn't do it for me unfortunately and I got bored (twice!). It's a shame as there are some interesting ideas in here and what is there is fairly polished, I'm just not sure it makes much sense

This game is brutal, its hard, and merciless. The goal is to fail, but it is rewarding to see just how far one can get before doom.

I think this game has a lot of potential. However the slow pace of the development might just be what will kill it.
I think this game could spark up once again if some effort was put on Performance and mods.
Create a high performant base, and let the community spark up some alternative gamemodes, buildings and maybe even entire game systems.

As the game is now it is recommendable. But only to a very niece type of people who enjoys these types of games (Rimworld players) or other brutal sims. The game is enjoyable to pick up once a year for a week then let it cook some more, while playing other titles.

For 13,99 euro, this is a steal and the idea of a 1 usd/euro an hour is quickly reached here.

Rise to Ruins is one of those games that really hits the sweet spot if you're into god sims or city-builders with a twist. It’s like it knows exactly what itch to scratch, blending the satisfaction of managing a village with the chaos of survival.

As a god in the game, you’re not just watching your villagers build huts and gather resources—you’re actively involved. You can heal them, control the weather, and even throw down some godly wrath if things get out of hand. It feels like you're guiding them but also constantly reacting to the world. And that balance between control and unpredictability is what makes it so engaging.

What I love most is how everything just clicks. You’re building this peaceful little village, but at the same time, there’s this looming threat from monsters that come at night. So while you're expanding and gathering resources during the day, you’re also preparing to defend everything you’ve built. It adds just the right amount of tension.

And honestly, the game has this really addictive loop. You’re constantly improving things, tweaking your strategy, and watching your village grow from a few huts to a thriving settlement. Plus, the retro pixel art style just gives it that extra charm.

If you’re looking for a game that scratches that god-sim itch while keeping things fresh with a mix of management and survival, Rise to Ruins is a must-try. It’s challenging but in a way that feels rewarding, and you’ll get sucked in for hours without even realizing it.

I feel like i would love this game, but the UI is pretty bad - ugly and odd to navigate. I feel like a lot of it can be cleaned up for higher resolution displays. Down thumb solely because of the clunky UI. If Im going to sink the time into the game for the depth it has, i want a UI that isnt so cumbersome.

This looks like a promising game but the UI is just too bad for me to get far enough into the game to start enjoying it, and the game doesn't have a good enough in game help for new players. I found myself googling to find out what should be simple controls, I was also surprised to find out you couldn't rotate buildings

Solid fun game. Tougher than you would think. City Builder mixed with tower defense. Kinda like Age of empires style game.

It's like if Age of Empires was made for a tower defense game, not bad.

Honestly whenever I pick this game up to play it just annoys me. Way too clunky and terrible on my eyes.

I love this game. It's deep, challenging, but not so difficult I feel like it's impossible. There are tips and tricks you figure out as you progress that help you not do as poorly as you inevitably will when you first start out. My personal revelation was when I figured out if I have enough resources out the jump from my previous settlements, I can actually attack the corruption myself rather than waiting for it to build up and attack me. Now I've cleared at least three separate map tiles completely and have most of the achievements in the game.

I don't remember how much I paid for the game, but it was certainly worth it. If you like games like rimworld, civ, etc, I think you'd enjoy this game as well.

It's rimworld, for people who hate agency and depth.
