Remember Dragon Warrior?
Well this game is Dragon Warrior like it used to be...with some added humor. The game plays great...and looks great too from a nostalgic point of view. The humor is light and makes the game fun, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
If you want something that plays like an old NES RPG, then you have found it here. But if you like the current style of games like Final Fantasy 12 and up....you might want to avoid this. That is the easiest way to tell if you can handle this game and have a good time.

This game was great on Vita, and it's amazing on steam deck. On desktop it's a bit rough, since it takes over everything and is a bit of a pain to deal with as a desktop game.
“Dragon Fantasy” is a humorous and somewhat unusual JRPG game – in fact a collection of several short JRPGs that give tribute to older classical games, connected by a central storyline. Main plot revolves around the abduction of the crown prince, and the aging hero of the kingdom that sets out on a quest to rescue him. Aside the main story, there are three branching sub-stories told from the point of view of some of the NPCs. Game features simplified combat mechanics which is slightly different for each story, retro-style graphics and music. Gameplay is reasonably short and not too grindy (with the exception of the main story, where you need to take a bit more time to develop the hero) and can be finished in a few hours, and the price is reasonable, certainly worth buying if you are a JRPG collector.

YES. I own on ios too and I love love this game. Anybody else who is crazy about 8 bit rpgs you need this one. Got it on sale but worth 10 dollars no questions.
Game crashes too often. Seems like it would of been a great game if not for that. Crash seems to be when I go to use an item or spell and cancel the action and/or when I go into a character xp screen and exit out of it. The game crashes and exits me out to desk top. : (
By far the better of the two games, very old-school Dragon Quest feel to it, but with an odd sense of humor interjected into the story to keep it feeling fresh.
Both games are worth playing, but this is the one you'll remember and come back to, the sequel is passable but ultimately forgettable while this hits a Doom and Destiny or Unepic level of indie awesomeness.
As long as you go into this game understanding what it is, and isn't, I think you'll enjoy yourself. The game itself doesn't take things too seriously, I quite enjoyed many of the small jokes and puns.
One thing I'll note is that it's obvious the developers of the game got better as time went on. Each subsequent chapter is generally better/smoother than the one before it. And the last chapter just tickled my funny bone to no end!
Lots of feelings of Nostalgia while playing this. 1st part plays like Dragon Quest I, 2nd part plays like some aspects of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest IV (specifically thinking Torneko Taloon's chapter), and 3rd part reminds me of Locke's section from Final Fantasy VI, or possibly Rogue. Final section, of course is Minecraft. All throughout, you can capture monsters ala Dragon Quest V or Pokemon.
Very enjoyable for the price. :)
Hello Friends! Welcome to my review of Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria. This game plays like how the original version of Final Fantasy IV after years used to play as..in chapters. Basically, you have 4 chapters to pick from, and each has a main hero that you play in it as. I suggest playing them in order of 1,2,3, then M. This game is continued after ending to the second game, which is also on steam. i plan on playing it after this review. Yes, this is a RPG maker game, but it is done well. I did experience an error, and the monster recruiting change building was not explained at all, so i needed to figure that out on my own. So here are my pros/cons list:
PROS:
- Classic gameplay
- Chapter oriented
- Nice music
CONS:
-You may experience a bug where the game just shuts down. I did. I figured it was my screensaver, as this issue has happened with some older games before.
- The fact the game does not end is kinda annoying. The good thing you can continue the story on the next game though. Hopefully it ends on that one.
So i recommend this for old skool rpgers for the graphics and gameplay. I do not recommend for someone that wants graphics and a deep storyline.
Really enjoy this game. It is fairly short but is highly amusing. It feels very similar to early dragon quest/warrior games. It goes on sale fairly often and you can get it crazy cheap. I recommend picking this one up and if you like it grab the 2nd part too.
I had lots of fun completing all the stories of the game. I really like the writing and the humour.

This is a fun and interesting little JRPG. While it appears to be only the first chapter of the "Volumes of Westeria", it works well on its own. Great gameplay, fun plot, and interesting mechanics.
Would recommend getting on discount, but otherwise very good.
Note: There appears to be a sequel called The Black Tome of Ice. I may have to check that out in the future...
I can't reccomend this game enough as an old school turn based JRPG fan! Very Dragon Quest like which I love! A bit grindy, but that's how it was back in the day.
Fun to play and just fun to watch all the conversation and sillyness lol Minecraft chapter was pretty cool with all the game self-awareness hahaha Definitely recommend! Onward to see the continuation of this story...
Dragon Warrior (NES) meets EarthBound (SNES), in a great meshing of gameplay that will have you hooked for hours.
I myself prefer the 8bit mode to enjoy this game, as being in my 30s I've been raised on the 8bit genre - but you can enjoy this hidden gem in 8 or 16 bits (music and gfx toggleable seperately in the config screen).
This game is addictive if you liked the old dragon warrior games on the NES, you'll love this. I won't spoil the fun, but I've gotten through the 1st two caves and found the 3rd one (and died...). Luckily, I had my progress recorded on the imperial scrolls of... well, you get the point. It's just like Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series (with a splash of EarthBound's humor on the monsters/battles and hidden stuffs). Secrets items abound so do look around. Should be a fun play-through for anyone with a hankering for some more 8 (or 16) bit games.
Updated to let everyone know it works with a SNES or USB-SNES controller, use SCANCODE emulation in joytokey program to make it work with retro-controllers.
Fully Recommended.
This is a great game that kicks nostalgia into overdrive.
The game is a little short but still manages to deliver a satisfying story. The first chapter is the meat and potatos of the game while Chapter 2 & 3 add other perpective to the story but are much shorter. The fourth chapter, or the intermission, is more of a joke chapter that can be skipped.
This game follows the jRPG formula to a T. If you don't like jRPGs you probably won't like this game but if you love jRPGs then you should love this one as well. It doesn't try to be unique and then lack to deliver, it tries to be exactly what it is: a classic.
The only negative thing I can stay about this game is that the short chapters leave you wanting more. They are ended abruptly and don't feel like they have been concluded.

Dragon Quest mashed with Final Fantasy. Level-grinding and random turn-based battles in 8- or 16-bit style - it feels like I'm a kid again. A masterful homage to the games of yesteryear.
Great game, if you grew up playing RPG's like Final Fantasy and Dragon's Quest on your NES then this will bring back some wonderful memories. Fun light hearted RPG that's pretty straight forward and all around fun game to kill some time with. Enjoyable poking around and seeing what funny dialog you can find from random bookshelves or NPCs.
This game is a lot of fun and brings back the days of Dragon Quest. I would give it a 10/10.
Pros Great fun ok graphics. easy to pick up. Plays well with a gamepad. Can capture monsters and use them in your group. Only they dont level up disappointing. Awesome Game just completed all the chapters in 11 hours flat short but loads of fun. Probably coulb beat it faster but enjoyed every minute a must buy
Cons Hero is bald!!! yuck!! With out the latest patch the game minimizes to the task bar but does not shut down semi annoying with patch it seems to be ok. Lame attempt at humor. If you are looking for humor than get Doom and Destiny. You notice the extreme lack at attempted humor when the first monsters you fight are Biggs, and Wedge?????? FFVI????? so lame and it only gets worse if you can get around that it is worth every penny Loads of fun. Gridding required but what game isn't
