Just as fun as I had expected this to be!
As someone who has never read/watched Hamlet, I really appreciate the 'canon' options being marked, so you can speedrun a Shakespeare play.
Very funny game. Also alot of achievements to collect for my fellow achievement hunters ;)
If you're looking for a completely unique gaming experience, To Be or Not To Be is it. This is not your traditional visual novel or point-and-click – it’s a full-on choose-your-own-adventure with countless hilarious options and endings. The humor is spot-on, often irreverent, and it takes Shakespeare’s Hamlet to places I never thought possible (but always wanted to see). The illustrations by amazing artists add even more character to the already witty dialogue. There’s something so rewarding about making a decision and seeing the crazy consequences that follow. Definitely worth multiple playthroughs to explore every ridiculous outcome. Highly recommended for anyone who loves great storytelling, humor, or just plain weird fun.
I had fun with this, Shakespearian shenanigans indeed! It's a lot of reading and absurdist humor. Every now and then, after the game rewarded you for a wild choice, it will punish you quickly for the next wild choice, and... well, there's a lot of death and dying involved there. I suppose death and dying is sort of its own reward in this game, though, as every time you find a new way to die, you get to see another piece of illustrated art, and if you feel like it you can try filling up the whole art gallery! (I don't feel like it, that's too much work.) You also get art pieces when you reach an end, SOMEHOW, where you don't die! The deaths definitely feel more frequent, though.
I do think there is, at the base, an appreciation for the original (stolen) work of Hamlet in this. It sure refreshed my memory of what happens in that play, in a way I think I will never forget.
On the one hand, I feel the experience is better conveyed through the original book format; on the other hand, I made Ophelia become a serial-killer (multiple times) and committed cannibalism. So I'd say YEAH good enough
