Amazing game
Played this game when I was a kid on a Windows 98 and it's just as gritty as I remember it.
This one isn't just about nostalgia, I definitely feel like this is one of the best SW games next to Jedi Academy as far as story and gameplay are concerned.
10/10
a classic. you definitely need to fix keybindings and mouse settings, but its worth a play through.
Very jank, but in a cute Late-90's way. I'd recommend playing the game on "Easy" difficulty for the first time through and going from there.
It's not as bad as E.T. was on the 2600 but it's pretty damn close to being that bad.
This game was my childhood. Even after all these years, I still know where each enemy spawns during the first few levels. If you grew up on LucasArts games, you have experienced the Star Wars golden age. Still waiting on that remaster...
It was literally my first Star Wars game, which I got to know in the demo version on the Europa Magazine CD-ROM when I was a child, and in short... the game is clearly a Star Wars DOOM, only infinitely awesome! So I recommend it!
YEEES!
A couple things before you buy
1 - this game is notorious for not working on modern machines. make sure you test it
2 - it is definitely a game of its era and has design limitations based on memory and processing capacity of its time - it's reminiscent of the original doom, but with lightsabers
if you get past those two sticking points, it's still a pretty great game. At the time, It was absolutely one of my favourites (it's one of the first 3D games made).
there are lots of secrets in each level that are quite hard to find - finding them requires a degree of paying attention to your environment that we don't really do these days (just keep your eyes open for places where enemies are or spaces that look like they continue out of your field of view and you'll find many).
also, the use of music is wonderful. since the music plays on a loop, you'll frequently have the perfect music paired up with whatever action you're performing - luke's theme as you jump across a massive chasm, music from Cloud City as you sneak around a corner, and on it goes.
give it a shot to see if it's to your taste. You will definitely know prior to two hours if you want to return it.
I have no idea if this game holds up at all, but it is such a pleasant nostalgia trip for me. This game was my favorite growing up, and it holds a lot of great memories of my first forays into gaming. Dope story, pretty decent live action cutscenes, and exactly the kind of gameplay you'd expect from a 90s pc game (still very fun).
Fun. T: Eriamjh
This shit is like my childhood or something, it's got 90s FPS gameplay, lightsabers, chunky low poly models, cheesy as FUCK FMV cutscenes, choice between dark and light side with cool FORCE POWERS, running so fast that you fucking DIE if you hit a wall and it barely runs on modern PCs, what' not to love?
This game as sold isn't is the best of states (and it used to be worse, it's had some fixes over the years), but with the incredible OpenJKDF2 engine remake, it's near perfect on modern systems. I did experience some minor bugs with it in my recent playthrough (using v0.9), but nothing significant and I was able to finish the game just fine. There are some alternative fixes available as well.
The game itself is really great too, and feels "Star Wars-y", in the best sense, with large, intricate, well-built and detailed levels (especially considering the game's age). And even though it's a "boomer shooter" at it's heart, the force powers and lightsaber enhance the gameplay very nicely. It's not many games that let you run so fast or jump so high you take impact damage from it, but this one let's you zoom around like a true Jedi.
It's very easy to install mods, too, whether that's updated models and textures, or a ton of user made extra levels to play through.
If you like old-school FPS's and Star Wars, it's definitely a classic.
Doesn't work on all modern computers, make sure you test it within the refund time and don't finish DF1 first.
It's pretty old, but honestly, I've always loved the extended universe of Star Wars. And Jedi Knight series gives a lot of that. It's a better story than what Disney has done to Star Wars. Besides lore and story, the gameplay is solid, if you're into retro games. It's not for everyone, but I really loved this era of LucasArts and the games they made.
another classic
When it's good it's fantastic, when it's bad it's downright infuriating.
It's a great game but i do not recommend playing through it on Hard as i did, i'd say that 60% of the game was fantastic, and 40% was just so infuriating that it ruined the rest of the moments.
Expect alot of trying to find barely visible buttons, enemies that mow you down in seconds, and a lightsaber that is useless.
No idea how the other difficulties are though!
How To Play
Firstly, reviews are mixed because Lucas Arts released these games in an unacceptable state, they don't work on a lot of PCs. SO... Use the OpenJKDF2 source port to run these games, easy drag and drop install, they run flawlessly using OpenGL with updated graphical additions like SSAO and Widescreen and many other fixes. find it here https://github.com/shinyquagsire23/OpenJKDF2
Review
Classic Post Trilogy Story
Jedi Knight and it's expansion Mysteries of the Sith are my favorite in the Dark Forces series, but also possibly my favorite Star Wars games overall. With the disappointing Disney Trilogy, I think a lot of classic SW fans will find a lot to love about this series. As someone who has no real interest in reading the extended universe books, the Dark Forces series is an awesome window into the original story line post original trilogy. We get to see the state of the galaxy, Dark Jedi, Imperial Remnant, the new Republic and Jedi Orders, etc.
An Ambitious Star Wars Boomer Shooter
Jedi Knight & Mots are also just really fun Quake era FPS experiences, featuring classic fast paced gunplay, intricate exploratory level design, and the addition of lightsaber combat and force powers. There's also something about the combination of janky early 3D, Pixelart Textures, and cheesy FMVs that just does it for me. They really tried their best to make a Star Wars movie like experience in game form. I love the over the top acting and well written stories, it's so much fun. It really has the same spirit of the classic trilogy, feels like a group of developers flying by the seat of their pants doing things that had never been done. I think out of the entire Dark Forces series, Jedi Knight and especially Mysteries of the Sith are the most interesting and probably had the most work put into them. Jedi Outcast/Academy are the games that hold up the best by modern standards probably, but JK & MOTS are still both a treat to play, especially in context of when they were made!
Golden Era Lucas Arts
I really admire how hard LucasArts went back in the 90s. People forget, but they were among the upper echelon of developers back then. It wasn't just due to the Star Wars/Indiana Jones IPs, but also because they were pushing gaming technology forward. Similar to how Industrial Light and Magic used the Star Wars films to develop new film making techniques, Lucas Arts used their games to set the standards of the time. Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and Jedi Outcast were all at the top of their class, true high budget, PC shredding games that blew peoples minds when they released. That work still shines through, and helps these games stand out and hold up even today.
Mysteries of the Sith
Also I would like to recommend NOT skipping Jedi Knight's expansion: Mysteries of the Sith. It's a great expansion, I actually think it's far superior to Jedi Knight. Level Design is a massive improvement, the locations you visit and the story being told are exceptional. There are a ton of brand new weapons, enemies, textures, models, etc. I actually think MOTS had some of the best level design in the entire FPS genre at the time, and even by today's standards it's still impressive. It does have regular 3D model cutscenes in place of the FMVs which is a shame, but it's a great classic expansion that almost feels like a full sequel. The story in MOTS leads directly into Jedi Outcast (with a time skip) as well so you won't want to miss it.
Mods
There is also a remaster project available for both games, personally I think the game looks better with the original models and unfiltered pixel textures, but to some people it would be considered an improvement.
These games do also benefit greatly from a few reshade effects: bloom, raytracing, ambient light, etc. whatever you prefer, you can really spice up the lighting and post processing of the game without compromising the original aesthetic like the remaster mods do.
