If you slow down, speed up, or get hit, the camera shakes. Now combine all 3 constantly when you have to fly into the Trade Federation hangar and you'll be disoriented and not even know what to do or what to shoot at. I had an easier time in Rogue Squadron 3 flying the Millennium Falcon in and out of the Death Star than playing the final level of this game. Game runs well but will always run at a stretched 4:3 even if you set your display to any 4:3 resolution. There's no .ini file to edit or mod to install to fix this, instead you'll have to go into your Windows directory to change something which I'll never do and never had to do for any game from that era
Rogue Squadron 1 except it’s set just prior to The Phantom Menace. I would’ve been all over this if I played it when it came out. Sadly, I get the vibe that nostalgia is required to truly enjoy it, although it isn’t an objectively bad game by any stretch. The game is from the era of manuals, and playing it without having read the manual does feel like I’m missing key information crucial to enjoying it.
It does feel a bit slapped-together, with obvious concessions made to fit levels inside the paltry memory of the consoles that it’s optimised for. Things like enemies coming in very small waves and tiny play areas. The sound mixing is all over the place too, regardless of what you do with the settings. Speaking of settings, there is no way to remap your controls.
The story feels like it could go places as of around 5-6 levels in, especially if you’re a SW geek, but I’m too old to waste time on 6,5/10 games and have many other (better) games in my backlog. I’ll read the Wookieepedia page instead.
Also note that Starfighted’s Deck/Linux compatibility rating is total BS. It runs, but you won’t get any cutscenes regardless of what Proton version you use. It also DOES NOT support the Deck’s native resolution at all - it’s 4:3 or nothing.
Positive… but only just. Blame the second-hand nostalgia, because it does take me back to being 10 purely down to the aesthetic and theme.
It's okay
Do not buy, it does not function on modern systems.
Nostalgic, fun, simple, cheap. Can't complain for the product delivered
I would like this game rebooted with modern tech to help better control the star fighter, same story, same missions just new tech..and maybe better control schema.
What a classic! This game really is peak Lucasfilm StarWars games. My first memories of this game was renting it from blockbuster for the PS2, being in awe as a kid getting to fly some my favourite StarWars ships and getting stuck on the tutorial level for a whole day.
Games where HARD back in these days! I must have rented it 3 or 4 times to finally finish it and that final boss....OMG sooooo rage inducing!
The levels have a good mix of space and planet side combat taking on ground and air targets.
The main thing that makes this game so difficult (once you've actually figured out the controlls) is the damage system.
Your Starfighter can take a LOT of damage but every single time you get hit it knocks the the ship and camera in a random direction usually sending you straight into the ground or an astroid and not taking damage is unavoidable. For me playing though this again 20 years later was a great nostalgia trip with a dark shadow of pain and rage looming overhead. Completing this thing requires mental strength, commitment and perseverance but if you can beat that final boss...the feeling on releaf and accomplishment is absolutely worth it.
10/10 would experience the pain again.
If you're stuck on the final boss i highly recommend cheesing it and hiding in the vents and his missiles don't really work in there.
The sequel game, Jedi Starfighter is such a vast improvement it's not even comparable. This game is not fun. Story isn't interesting, characters are mid. Seriously just go out and play Jedi Starfighter.
