this game is a departure from the previous two games, in a bad way.
The camera ruins everything. I still can't understand who even approved this design if they ever take a look at what they've done or better played this game at all. It's frustrating to navigate because the 3D level design which adds nothing more than confusing perspective.
Instead of innovating on new powers, puzzles etc. they decided to gun down the most important part of the game. But good news is they learned their lesson and reversed this anomaly in other games thankfully. Still not recommended of course. This game shouldn't have passed the ideation stage.
Other than that there's really nothing to say here, because of this game becomes a chore rather than fun. You can safely skip this game to move on the other ones in the series. And requiring collectibles to unlock levels is so absurd. It's against the core principle of collectibles which they are optional not mandatory things. I can unlock new upgrades if I want to, game should not be forcing the player to do it.
Each character's "challenge" levels are not needed because it's take away all the fun when working in group (especially for co-op). They are still doing this in Trine 5. If every puzzle or obstacle only one way to solve then what's the point of this game then? Game should foster creativity and let the players do unique approaches to the problems.
Unless you want to experience the nausea effect and battle with camera's perspective all the time, don't go anywhere near this.
I am a big Trine series fan. I loved Trine 1, 2 and avoided Trine 3 up until the price became "reasonable" to take the risk.
I have to say though... While there are some bad things, the game in its current state feels like a breath of fresh air given the Trine's 2.5D repeated formula.
First the bad:
Gameplay length
So... 100% of achievements in less than 6 hours. I did NOT speed-run, to the contrary: I stopped multiple times to admire some visuals, I took screenshots, I streamed the game to another person because they were interested. I tried to "jump out of the map" and so on. This could have easily been 5h-5h 15min gameplay. Buy this on sale for 5-8 EUR and you got yourself a deal. That is, if you discard the abysmal ending of the game which I could not figure out what it was supposed to mean.
If you search around or go through the community posts on Steam, you will find the devs' response to this criticism: the game got cut short because it would require more than triple the money they expected/had (spent >5M, required ~15M USD). If you put one and one together, you realize you really got what feels like a third of the gameplay.
As the devs have redeemed themselves in Trine 4 and 5, I won't hold it against them much. I understand the outrage at the release time and I think that the base price should have been reduced and a proper (at least textual) ending should have been hacked to the back. One 10s-second animation is just NOT it.
Motion Sickness / Lack of perspective
This is a common topic for this game and from my experience, I had close to no issues. I played single-player and apart from the book chapter and Pontius "rotating mining rig" mini-chapter, I didn't notice ANY motion sickness (mind you I am sensitive to this kind of thing) and in that same chapter, I encountered just two instances of uncomfortably losing perspective and getting a bit frustrated. (but I think that my gameplay time & achievement rate is more of a proof than my words).
This is something a lot of people took for granted I guess but I have to praise the devs for this. I expected chaos, I expected taking breaks and I expected getting mad over lack of perspective. None of this happened. I was very surprised how the camera
worked in some spaces - it didn't JUST work, it freaking WORKED, wherever you moved (as long as you didn't explicitly try to reach some areas at the very limit of the screen/map). I would urge anyone replaying this game to pay attention to how the camera just flawlessly handles everything. Sure, you have a static level design but still: they managed to give enough perspective and good enough angles that it felt natural.
What also felt natural despite me being originally scared of it were the controls. After the first few levels, I was getting more and more convinced that I misjudged the shit out of this game.
Breath of fresh air ... with limitations
As someone who perfectly completed Trine 1, 2 (with DLC), and 4 (without DLC), this piece felt... new. I remember playing Trine 4 and being a bit sad about how it seemed too easy compared to Trine 2, seemingly adding a few mechanics and calling it a day.
Trine 3 felt almost magical. I got hit with nostalgia from the time of my discovery of the Trine 1 demo. I cannot describe more. The game just felt "new".
The added dimension allowed devs to create better scenery, more elegant "secrets" and for me, it was a lot of fun. I discovered some parkour techniques and was kept busy by looking for "triangles". Most of the time (>80%), looking at the art and interacting with the new world made me forget about Amadeus' limitations (box conjuring only) and Zoya's lack of arrow types.
It made me sad that the "triangles" were used as a progression mechanism but if the choice was "unfinished/broken" game and this, I would choose the status quo.
There was exactly 1 bug I encountered: Kippo (the fishing creature) did not visually catch the fish. I was able to make progress but the fish just froze mid animation. That's it.
While I do understand the negative reviews at the release time and people valuing their money, I cannot wrap my head around the (semi) recent "mixed" reviews. Current customers have all the information when buying the game. For the price of 5-10 EUR, this is a great game with tons of now-dead potential. Honestly I am just sad Trine 3 got cut this short of both gameplay and features.
Taking into account all of the above, I am convinced I misjudged this game. Trine 3 is a Trine game
In spite of buying the full (at the time) series a long time ago I never got into this game. Nothing has changed. There are better platformers and better fantasy settings, this is a subpar generic version of both.
Couldn't get into the first 2 and see little point in trying hard to get into the 3rd.
Also worth noting the steam deck settings do not work on default, you get stuck on the map, at a guess I think you might be controller 2 not 1, causing you to summon and control the alt heroes not the main so there is nothing on the map you can interact with. Though why you added a map is questionable. It adds nothing.
Either the devs never bothered to test the game, or the testers never bothered to do their job properly. Actually, forget testing, how did this even pass the prototype vetting? The added spacial depth with the fixed camera makes this unplayable in local co-op, and local co-op is the highlight of the Trine series. What a self-defeating design! Such a shame because the Trine series is otherwise charming and fun.
Considering all the hate I saw this game got, I found it pretty enjoyable as a shorter experience that dabbles with a third dimension. I thought the level design was pretty interesting, and not overly complicated, though the platforming could occasionally get awkward. Combat could be a real pain getting swarmed from all sides, but it's manageable enough. The game still looks and sounds very pretty. If you're into Trine, why not give it a shot? If you're not, I might start with #2 first. Still, recommended.
Trine 3 is the ultimate fairy tale game, blending enchanting visuals with a captivating story. Featuring three unique characters, each with remarkable skills, it offers stunning graphics and an unforgettable adventure.
nice little game :D
sad
Great improvement from the first 2. The transition from the 2D to 3D is confusing at the start but you get used to it. The story is still unimpressive and the graphics the same fairy-tale theme. Is it worth it your time? Sure, if you liked the first 2. You can always skip the 2 titles before and start with this one but you'll probably get it cheap in a bundle and try all of them. In the end nothing special or new but you can enjoy your time with this platform game doing skill jumps, some battle and easy riddles.
Skip this one
Co-op was terribly broken. Had times where people just didn't spawn, Camera stuck someplace different from the characters, controls not working or animation/interactions just not working
nauseating and annoying
Whew. Overall a mixed experience: 100% achievements in 8 hours is great. Very little grind, that's good. Somehow though I didn't get any of the story. Compared to Trine and Trine 2, this one was a bit bland. We kept plowing through in co-op not minding much what characters were saying etc.
3D is a bit tricky at times. A new take at Jump 'n' Run games, actually well implemented, but not my taste overall.
That's not a complete "never buy this ever" review. But getting this game on sale will lower the chance of disappointment and might actually still be a good deal :)
Out of the trine series, this is the only bad game. Even the devs make jokes about how bad it was in the later games. Skip this one and move onto trine 4.
i have played all trine, love trine. actually i think the dev want something new in trine after trine 1&2 so they made 2.5D environment in trine3. Trine3 unique, creative but sometime things dont go the way we expected. I am not a hard gamer honestly, i just think this Trine3 dont deserve full price, BUY it at the SALA price !! ^^ if u want to try this unique game-The different version than other Trine1245 ^^
I have not finished the game yet ! Because the 2.5D environment is to hard to play,
Not the best in the series, but I did enjoy the story.
This third outing into the Trine universe is the first to take us into the third dimension. Our three heroes seem to have had their abilities pared back quite a bit from previous adventures and the use of this new engine should have opened up new possibilities in terms of the puzzles but it doesn’t seem to push any boundaries. There are some nice touches and interesting ideas, the levels in the book in particular were beautifully made, but just as thing start to get interesting, it’s all over. Everything seemed to be made with the same love and care as the previous games but unfortunately due to funding, this one ended up unfinished with two more parts needed to complete the story that was planned out. Hopefully one day the devs can pick up on where this one left off, in the mean time I’m glad we still got Trine 4 & 5.
Dette er helt på trine 3
nie
controls and view are bad!
This game is a blight on the franchise. I am glad they returned to form later on.
This game is a misstep in the Trine series, and should be removed from the series, keeping 1-2-4-5! It's unfortunate! The graphics look nice but what they tried here --- having one game become a 3d game within a side-scroller series --- just doesn't work.
It's hard to figure out just how to move around the world. You fall off narrow walkways, etc combat is weird and the camera doesn't know where to go when you have 2 players playing locally.
The Trine series is fantastic otherwise, but this game is one to skip. I highly recommend every other game in this series!
Save your sanity and go play Trine 4 and 5. Avoid this game like a plague.
Some pseudo weird to make everything in 3D but puzzles solutions stays in some way majority in 2D view. It’s a good thing developers understood what a mistake they made and will never repeat this again.
This was so much fun! I played it a bit unsure how much I will enjoy it, but within first few minutes I was swapped. The gameplay, the visuals, sounds, characters and even collecting triangles-- all those brought me a lot of joy. The story does end of cliffhanger, but personally I don't find it problematic. Somewhat, I even like that. Overall a lovely game! <33
A nice game to play and it is quite challenging. It may not have the best graphics compared to other modern games. It is still a game I can recommend to others.
It is a clunky mess and the kind-of 3D/Fixed camera 3D is done very poorly. Additionally, they removed the leveling system that is in every other game which did leave some members of the party feeling useless during some of the encounters (Zoya was absolutely useless during the final battle, she couldn't participate in the fight at all beyond reviving the other two characters).
Not a bad game but I will not recommend it because its a downgrade from the old one.
no more level up or upgrading skill. The skill youve got at the start of the game are the same at the ends of the game, no change.
No more exp bottle of course, we now have triangle, with no use.
Because you cannot improve skill, same puzzle are use again and again... was not impress or surprise by anything.
The only change with this game is Zora can now tide her rope to thing. A good idea but... That it?
3d is nice but camera is fix, some jump have very awkward angle with the camera.
Feel like a incomplete game or a rush game.
I 100% this game in 5 hours. Pretty easy game, last boss was laughable.
:)
trine 1 and 2 way better but this one isnt hrorible
I'm so sad by the fact that they went with a pseudo 3d direction when the first two were really good.
The one thing this teaches is that you really need to look at some ingame footage before buying sequals.
I wouldn't even consider this on sale, it's that bad.
I would say this game gets way too much hate. Me and my friends really enjoyed it. Puzzles are not that difficult and it's not that difficult to find all triangles. Levels are beautiful and last boss fight was pretty challenging. Mini levels are fun too. It's not the same as the other games but I wouldn't say it's horrible, give it a try!
This game I only played for an hour but it wasn't anything particularly special. It's pretty but gets boring fast.
I've played it over 3-4 days with my girlfriend and we both quite liked it. But you have to get used to 3D and it's not balanced well. We mostly played with Zoya and Pontius. Pontius' ability to glide let me move quicker than the others and stomping helps with any spinning or bouncy objects. Zoya's swing is better than in the previous ones, but you really can't aim up or down. And Amadeus is useless most of the time.
The story is cut in the middle. But then again, everyone writes highly about the second game and I don't remember much of it, even though I played it last month. It's a shame this one was released in this state and not followed up, but then again I don't play it for the story. It's just a fun platform game.
Beautiful game with some amazing environments and stunning visuals. Majorly let down by clunky controls. They should've just stick to the winning formula of Trine 1 and Trine 2.
Fantastic game !
The graphics are amazing and as agood as other trine games.
This one has even better battle mode and imo the enemy variety is more interesting than in Trine 4. Basically fighting the enemies is much more satysfying than in Trine 4.

On its own, it is a beautiful and fun game. But as a follow up to Trine 1 and 2, it is the weakest in the series:
The story feels incomplete, the introduction of 3D is hit & miss, it is significantly shorter, and the removal of level-up upgrades makes things feel more shallow.
It's very literally unfinished. It just ends at what you assume is about 40%~ through it, even to the point of introducing what the next major thing (should've) been, then just credits roll.
A bit short, but a big improvement from 1 and 2.
Terrible. So buggy you cannot play - and not a localised or temporary issue but affecting all players. Would get a refund if it wasn't in a bundle with the others. I don't know how this was released or why. Going 3D was a terrible idea.
