Gold Rush! takes you back to the year 1849, when gold was discovered in California. It was certainly one of the most exciting times in American history. Gold Rush! includes the three routes tens of thousands took to the gold regions. Become Jerrod Wilson and experience each trek as you travel from New York to California.
Whichever route you decide to take, you will see many historical sights. Try going overland across the Great Plains and huge mountain ranges, crossing the Isthmus of Panama, or rounding Cape Horn on the tip of South America. If you survive and arrive at Sutter’s Fort, the adventure is still only half over! Many other puzzles remain to be solved before you achieve your goals in California.

At the start of the game there was no indication of what to do.. where to go .. etc -- I couldnt even last 5 minutes - quit and asked for a refund
Gold Rush! Anniversary is a remastered version of the classic adventure game released by Sierra in 1988 that promises to deliver a nostalgic experience with updated graphics and modern controls. You control Jerrod Wilson who must travel to California during the Gold Rush to find his long lost brother. The remastered version stays true to the original story line including the three alternative ways of travel to California.
I am quite tentative to recommend this to someone who has never played the original. In this modern age of Adventure games, this title feels like a whisper in the wind and will most likely only appeal for nostalgic value.
The scenery is lovely, game have some issues, so save often :)
You love the classic, you will love this too
I loved the original game from 1988 and when I saw they remade it as a point and click, I had to play! Playing 35 years later, I still remembered the story and most of the puzzles came right back to me. Great memories of my childhood! Recommended!
This version of Gold Rush is a mess and probably not worth trying for most people, even those with nostalgia for the original. It feels more like a mid 2000s adventure game than something from the mid 2010s. It was buggy when I played it and the cheap 3D models and backgrounds lack that simple yet endearing vibe the original has.
Well its not that bad, i wont tell you BUY it but its not a bad game either its something special.
Some might enjoy it some not.
I liked my first trip and had fun but i wont do another so
its more of neutral then positve but more positive then negative.
Thats why the thumb is up and not down cause steam dont offer neutral ones.
I play a lot of adventure games... This one sucks.
Crap animation
Crap graphics
Crap voice acting...really really cringe worthy kind of crap
and I felt tortured by trying to play it...
Why is this a game? It may have been OK 20 years ago but nowadays with the quality of adventure games out there now... this is a waste of data. Sorry devs but its bloody awful...
If you played Gold Rush when you were young you may enjoy it, but as a modern game it's short, with tedious boring parts and dead man walking situations and the graphics and voicing are poor at best.
Just not worth playing in my opinion.

TLDR: Inconsitencies in interface. Sterile feeling environments and rather flavorless setting.
The engine would routinely fail to recognize inputs from the radial menu. Simple things like trying to interact with a gated fence for example would just close the radial menu with no message.
Voice acting sounded home made and delivered without great passion or energy. They had NPCS walking on paths but did not keep consitency across screens meaning someone walking off in the opposite direction in the distance could show up walking in the next screen right next to you as if they teleported in the scene.
It is generally accepted that this game is to be enjoyed for nostalgia value and after a brief testing I can confirm that this remake does not really expand on the appeal to a larger audience.
To make matters worse there are reports that this still uses a word parser, a worse one than the original. It also lacks the charm and authenticity of the original release.
That leaves this title very little to recommend it for. I will be removing it from library permanently for declutter and will be avoiding sequels or other chapters.
As a sidenote the developpers behind this game are notoriously sensitive to any criticism. Going so far as to go in people's reviews to leave snide comments, and I had a review years ago flagged as abuse by them and it took a lot of patience and calm years after the fact to get them to lift the flag so I could edit the review and set it private.
Conclusion: It is a subpar game made by unhappy people.
Those who don't like this game probably don't understand where it's roots are and how these games were back in the day. That being said, it is vaguely like the original. If you like the old Gold Rush game, this is totally worth the money. If you wanna see other games like this and get a feel for it's roots, try out Police Quest, Hero's Quest, and/or Space Quest. They have the originals on Steam as well. Perhaps seeing those games can help others get a better appreciation for Gold Rush. I feel like the graphics give new players a false understanding of what kind of game this is. To a newcomer, they probably think this is a stupid indie game, when in reality, it is just a polished up version of one of the best games of it's time. My best advice for newcomers is to remember that exploring is the key. It is not a race to the finish like games today. You may have to load old save points. Save often and make multiple save files. Try everything you can think of. You will also need to use the command lines for a few of the required tasks. I noticed trying to get the note out of the desk is impossible via point and click.
A faithful reproduction of the original Sierra classic! The remake is more accessible and forgiving than Gold Rush with fewer random deaths and places to get completely stuck. The 'travel' sequence from NY to California was particularly well done thanks to voiceovers describing the voyage and the passengers. (I chose the 'long' way around Cape Horn). I plan on going back to try the other routes to Cali. Good job, Sunlight Games!
Disclaimer: I completed the original game at least a dozen times in the late 1980s.
This update takes the original look and feel and just makes it more playable (i.e., no more text parser). If you played the original and could not beat it then this version gives you a chance to replay it without all the guessing of what to type and when. This of this game as less of a remake and more of an update to allow point and click and you will enjoy it better.
I bought this game for about 2 USD and even then I decided to get a refund. First time in 6 years! It was very annoying to play, and it looks like it's been made in 1995. In the reviews I read that the original game was included, but that's not the case. For that you have to fork out more. Avoid.
I liked that there is a lot to do in town and lots of Information. That ales the storyline interesting. I also think that its funny that you can get run over by the horse and carts . but this game doesn't have a whole lot of direction . I would have liked more info on what to do and where to go and why. It is entertaining. I need to play more to figure some stuff out though cause I have never made it very far. I record.end giving it a try if you can get it for a good price.
The voice acting is awful (and for Christ's sake, voice actor they hired for this, you're supposed to be a guy from Brooklyn, stop saying "sorry" like a Canadian), there are multiple misspellings and bugs, the interface is pretty awful, the graphics look like a shareware game from the late 1990s, and worst of all it doesn't really expand on the original game at all. You'd be better off downloading and emulating the original, because at least that came from old-school Sierra programmers who knew what the hell they were doing.
I really, *really* regret paying money for this game. Actually, I kind of feel bad that I played this game without getting paid to do so. TERRIBLE.
What an incredible update (graphically) to a great old game. It's not the most complicated of games, but it sure does take a bit to work out what to do if you're not following a walkthrough.
Overall, I'd have to say that this is a great game and a welcome revival for a genre that is sadly laking in our current gaming market.
I was quite disappointed by this rushed remake. The voice acting is really dull and liveless. The graphics lack detail. The animations are choppy and ridden with glitches. Overall this game does not do the 80's original justice at all. In fact I recommend playing the original over this one because it still is the better, much more polished game despite its age.
I bought this against my better judgement.
Right off the bat it greets you with an into with a narrator that sounds like a foreign film dub.
The voice acting is full of awkward pauses, as if it were all done in one-take.
I had to skip the intro to make the cringing stop.
On to the first scene. Ok. Nice shiny graphics. Then a horse cart comes along. Its graphics look too CGI, too clean-and-shiny, like the early days of 3D modelling. Think the 7th Guest and Myst1. This is a 2014 game? Maybe if they'd done animated 2D instead of all the wasted effort on the overly clean 3D backdrops? I dunno.
I talk to people in the streets. Badly edited cuts. Again like it was "one-take, we'll edit the pauses out of it in post".
This is King's Quest 5 levels of bad voice acting. Are the people supposed to sound like non-native speakers? One of them did sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was pretty awesome.
It feels like a bad fan remake, except it costs money.
Worth < $5. Possibly $1?
Do not buy this game. scripting doesnt seem to work so you cant get out of the starting town. wasted my money on this one
This game has several dialogue issues of all kinds. The voice acting sounds stilted and forced. The text parser is bad, much worse than the original. With the price of this remake you'd think they would have fewer issues and improved more than just the graphics. Not at all worth the price, even at the 50% off I paid for it.
If you reallly want it, wait for an 80% off sale. That would be close to the actual value of this game.
