I really love how this game looks and sounds but when you actually start to play it, it's just not very fun.
It's alright
Should have given this a nod years ago. Loved playing through this game. Went quickly, 18h on my clock right now. I played it when i was down with an injury and it was a great game that week while I was laid up. Chill, cool graphics/dystiopia, really love the look of one of the characters from this game and actually based a D&D character on him that I had a lot of fun with.
If you want a chilled out game to rip for a bit this is a winner. Fun to watch others play as well.
I'd say more specifically but it was a very hot minute ago so that's what I have, an impression of a good time.
bought this just for the beautiful art. the gameplay is not that exciting though. Decide for yourself then. If you're looking for a no-brain required exploration casual game for 30 min after a day of work, it is it
Fun game :)
Highly recommend
This game has so much wasted potential. It could have been one of the best survival games ever made. Instead it's just a fine game. It's a shame because the art style and music is absolutely amazing. If you are looking for a good survival I recommend either The Long Dark or Don't Starve. Both of these games will keep you entertained for hundreds upon hundreds of hours. This one you will be done with it after around 30-40 hours.
All I need is food and water to set me free.
It's a great game, got a beautiful story woven throughout, fun mechanics and a tremendous art style.
Maybe I'm just not good at the game or I'm missing something. I really liked it a lot for the first 1/2 hour but then it gets too difficult for my liking, as well as repetitive. I found it too hard to get supplies and as soon as I got a little further into the game, the creatures came after me and ended the game EVERY TIME. This is not fun. Its a really neat game but just got too hard too fast.
So fun
This game was alot of fun, but doesn't have much replayability
Superb
A little difficult to get yourself started, think 7 Days to Die (without zombies) meets Oregon Trail. Some people hated it, some people are obsessed. But I found it quite enjoyable once you get your feet under you.
Beautiful but boring
I really wanted to like this game, the art style and music are really enjoyable.
But you just wonder down river hoping you find what you need to combat hunger, thirst and sleep. Unfortunately the sleep affliction also affects you IRL.
Great soundtrack, and fun and adaptive gameplay make it alot of trial and error, but fun
I think given the games out there right now, it's a pretty run of the mill survival game which surprised me, because at face value it seems quite theme-rich. You just wander around hoping you find what you need, essentially in an endlessly expanding fetch quest. There are also quite a few UX issues;
I accidentally clicked my raft and left a location, which then could be revisited, despite that it's right there next to me, and hadn't been explored.
How you use traps is not explained well. I got locked in the construction animation and then got ruined by a boar. It wasn't communicated that you have to set the trap up, so I figured you just place it. Killed my run.
Generally the way you're using keys and mouse is fiddly. I just don't like the control scheme and any good options that might be present aren't well communicated.
Overall though, there's just not an interesting angle to it, and it feels weirdly fiddly/uncomfortable to play. The raft travel is a basic minigame. The dog is superfluous. Inventory management, at least early on, is just a hoarding simulation; I don't know what I need, and it doesn't tell me. Personally, I don't like games that demand that I die pointlessly a bunch of times just to learn the basic principles of progressing. I can just play a game where I'm a character who is actually competent enough to survive their situation, at least long enough to actually enjoy the gameplay challenge.
Could have been cool, but fails to explore any interesting gameplay mechanics, or the cool setting.
The Flame in the Flood is more than just a survival game—it’s a journey that speaks to the human spirit, about how we navigate the currents of life and face the ever-present unknown. It’s about embracing the flow of the river, knowing that no matter how much we prepare or plan, we can’t control everything. The game teaches a quiet philosophy: survival is not just about resisting the elements, but about accepting them.
As you drift down the river, scavenging for supplies and avoiding danger, the game mirrors life itself—unpredictable, often harsh, but filled with moments of quiet beauty and reflection. Each stop on your journey is like a meditation, a chance to gather what you need, but also to reflect on the fleeting nature of safety. In The Flame in the Flood, you learn to appreciate the present moment, because you never know what lies around the next bend.
The philosophy here is one of acceptance and adaptability. You can’t conquer the wilderness, but you can flow with it. The river is both your guide and your challenge, pulling you forward, just as time pulls us through life. There’s no rushing to the end, no grand victory waiting—only the simple act of moving forward, surviving, and finding peace in the rhythm of the journey.
The game, much like life, reminds you to make the most of what you have and to let go of what you can’t control. And in that, The Flame in the Flood becomes not just a survival game, but a reflection on existence itself.
All in all, I've thoroughly enjoyed my experience with this game. There is a lot of good in The Flame in the Flood despite being rough around the edges.
I really liked the art direction of the game, this sort of grimdark meets semi-cubist look. The soundtrack is fantastic and fits the backcountry/rural world building. the Campaign has this sort of bread-crumb approach to storytelling: the world has gone to shit and you’re not entirely privy as to why beyond little hints in dialogue, artifacts, etc. And an endless mode is a plus for replay value.
What I disliked about The Flame in the Flood primarily has to do with the bugs. A few bugs I've encountered so far include:
- the timing event for aiming of the bow will often not initiate
- the looting interact interface will break leaving semi-obnoxious black blocks on the screen
- animal behaviour sometimes breaks self-eliminating their threat to the player
- the camera is very cumbersome and will frustrate you as you ram into things out of your periphery
They'll give you achievements for some bullshit, but not killing the king boar
It's short, sweet and deep. Very fun.
Owned the game on Xbox One in 2018 before I got a PC. Eventually bought the game again here and beat the campaign for real.
Good things: The game is just as jank as I remember it, down to every sliding character model and oblivious enemy. The game's difficulty is perfect for me, keeping it a constant challenge. The game includes developer commentary, which is always a plus for me. The story is never pushed in your face, with almost no cutscenes impeding gameplay.
Bad things: The rain is just as annoying as I remember it being, happening nearly constantly. Bosses, such as the Elder Wolf , have somewhat underwhelming rewards. And, of course, the persistent 'ILL EQUIPPED' status that means nothing to me, since there are so many ways to recover lost heat.
Regardless, this game's unique charm and hilarious jank makes up for all the negatives, though I admit that may be nostalgia talking. 100% worth a try at least, especially for the price. It's nice and simple, and you can always refund it.
