Intense arcade action
Fight against waves of enemies using a diverse arsenal of weapons. While the first levels may start out easy, the later parts of the game will pose a formidable challenge for even the most hardened shooter fan.
Highly Competitive Design
Everything in Hangeki has been designed with competitive players in mind, starting with the scoring system. All levels are scored by time. No arbitrary points. No arbitrary multipliers. Just you, your skill, and a finish line. How you get to the end is completely up to you. Will you play it safe and focus on staying alive? So not a single person is going to talk about the inertia or the stacked OMEGALUL sounds that will pop your speakers if you don't turn down sound in game huh?. It's unavoidable in later boss fights i.e. icicles all popping at once or the 5th boss with lightning popping all at once. I wonder if a single person that wrote a positive review got far enough into the game to experience any moments with stacked sounds or not.

We met circa 2016... many moons ago. You were far more ugly and rough back then(much more polished and smooth now btw ;) Yet still, you managed to show me something special. You had a unique way about how you interacted with others, I was immediately impressed. A welcome twist was found! You were literally da Bomb! On every level, just when I thought I couldn't take anymore, in you came to instantly provide clarity to move on. That is what sets you apart from the other "spaced-out invaders" vying for attention. You remain refreshing to this day, and for that, I am grateful.
You've always had great taste in music too! Always knew how to set the mood. Often I'd call ya up just to rock-out for a few minutes! Sadly, you never could "cut-a-rug", your moves were slightly sluggish and erratic at times. Someone needs to teach you how to dougie(you seem to move forth and back pretty well but your left and right steps are as-if underwater ;p). Anyways, this being our 6th Anniversary, I just wanted to thank you after all these years. You are the perfect 20 minute romp when I've got those copy-cat blues. See ya next month!?

This game is very cool and fun if you like flying arcade shooters
Story Time: Around 2015 or 16 I went to Anime Expo in Los Angeles and the makers of this game were doing a panel discussion on making a video game. I got to see the early examples of game design and play, and how they realized at a certain point the game became more repetitive than fun, so they tried to time game board wiping mechanics in for player enjoyment. It was also fun to see the many iterations of level, weapon, wave and sprite designs and little adjustments that were made with each design update. It was a great 30 minute presentation that made me really respect how much effort went into making this game fun, and how developers were constantly changing aspects with a goal of player experience. Also this presentation was one of the best I have seen at AX, which says a lot and obviously almost a decade later I'm talking about how impressed being shown how they got to the final version and the journey. Sadly I can't find this panel on youtube as would love to watch again. It made an impact! if anyone has a video of the Anime Expo presentation would love to have a link posted here.

Unlocking all the weapons was a fun challenge even though many of them aren't too useful.
Its good
tl;dr: Space Invaders, but you use your combo to power increasingly stronger and varied special weapons!
There's nuances, but every other mechanic complements that premise. For example, to make it easier to keep a combo (i.e. not miss) as you thin out the crowd, when you beat enough enemies in the current wave, you get a screen clear (the eponymous Hangeki) to move to the next. Also, if you do mess up and die or drop your combo, you do slow down, but you can get some of your gauge back by just getting the yellow thingies from clearing the current wave.
TIP: pick up the yellow bits that dead enemies drop! They're the actual gauge juice. Move around a lot: don't clear one column at a time, else you'll have to choose between picking them up and not missing shots (and your gauge drains when you're not comboing).
You equip four weapons (out of many unlockable ones) at the start of a stage, on top of your autofiring base gun. Your power gauge can fill multiple times, and more powerful weapons cost more gauges - they're worth using, as they'll usually destroy enough enemies to appropriately fill the gauge back up. You use the weapons that cost 1 gauge more often (at least when you're new), but it's exciting to strive to keep your combo up for just long enough to get to gauge 2, and even more as you get better at it!
Beating a stage or challenge gets you a new specific weapon to play with, and beating the par time on a stage gets you another weapon. Note that unlike many games with combos, it doesn't *force* you to keep a single huge combo from beginning to end of the stage - it just improves your time overall, there's no all-or-nothing score multipliers.
I haven't fully grasped some mechanics, and the acceleration on your ship is a little weird for such a frantic game (though you also get dodge buttons), but it really felt like I was playing something new!
Hangeki is an interesting evolution of Space Invaders and modern vertical shoot em ups, that is focused completing stages quickly versus getting points. It has a very low budget appearance, which brings in the $10 price tag into question. What I've played of it is kind of easy thanks to a forgiving hit box and 20 life limit per stage. While chaining enemy kills and leveling your ship per stage to unlock and upgrade weapons is a somewhat unique mechanic for a shmup the overall experience is a bit mundane, even though there some neat weapons and the screen clearing Hangeki attack. The more difficult waves that shoot multiple laser attacks and mortars make the game a bit more fun at least.
I don't recommend getting Hangeki unless you get it for cheap - it is kinda neat to wipe out giant waves of enemies a couple times, but that wears off quickly. The boss battles are fine, but nothing to buy this game for alone.

Take classic "Space Inavders". Throw away the fire button. Make it all about highschores, powerups and picking up small coins (looking very much like psuedographical zeroes)... Sell it on Steam as a novelty game. PROFIT.

Horrible Controls. Floaty and Imprecise.
Headache inducing strobing when the "Hangeki" is powered up.
Poor HUD design and location which makes it very difficult to see what exactly is going on. Though it doesn't really matter as this game boils down to being a non-strategic button masher-pad/stick flailer.
There are some fine ideas buried here, but the game itself isn't fun and presents no compelling reason to continue to play it more than as an initial curiosity.

EDIT: Whoever said this is a good "starter" for shmups, NO. This is hard as all-get-out. Infuritatingly so. This is for pros and experts. I am bashing my head into the wall over the frustrating difficulty.
It is not unfair, but very, very, VERY challenging.
Lot of fun and nice challenge! Maybe 10eur slightly overpriced, but got it on sale at 50% and definitely worth the price!
A very solid shmup. Starts off extremely easy on stage 1, but ends up being sort of like a Space Invaders type game with bullet hell shot patterns.
The main goal is to wipe out enough of the wave to activate your hangeki, which moves on to the next one. At the end of the normal stages is a boss. Hitting enemies with your normal weapon, increasing combo, and picking up yellow dots increases your meter which are used to activate the crazy weapons in the video.
Weapons go from weaker level one weapons with quick cooldowns to wave clearing level 3s. They are all very different and there are over 50 to unlock. Some of them are very difficult to do so however. Clearing stage 10 without dying in particular would be brutal.
Overall, a really fun game to play through and experiment with different weapon combinations. Very good for a shmup fan like myself, though it could potentially get a little frustrating towards the last couple levels for someone new to this sort of game or a completionist.
As a veteran SHMUP girl but also a casual player, I do recommend this game!
It's got retro graphics but it's intense, it's fun, and there's lots of weapons; even if someone isn't a top shooter, that person still will get even at least one weapon per stage cleared, adding lots of replay value. The further one goes and does well, the more he/she gets better weapons (like in Silpheed: The Lost Planet) and can edit up to four in prep for the next battle (Gradius)
The soundtrack has quite a catchy beat and is quite charming (like in Stage 3 on the Highway Zone, it's catchy!) as well as can get quite badass (like in Stage 2: the Supercell Area), and even up to how tense some bosses can be in familiar titles like Deathsmiles, Castle Shikigami, and Touhou (such as the final boss) adding a hint of sudden hard-rocking atmospheric music to a powerful climax of an opponent!
Speaking of which, the game has a fair difficuly curve as well, one can do quite well in the first few three stages and then it will challenge a/the pilot(s) of the Hangeki fighter(s) to how well he/she/they can fight. Stage 4 is where the action may kick up and become really exciting (in my oppinion).
Make sure to learn how to utilize the fighter's weapon settings well, as the hostiles will not hesitate to litter the screen with lasers and streams of bullets later ahead of the game! There's plenty of lives and infinite continues regardless of not doing so well, so it's also very benevolent regardless of how strong the opponents later can be. Never give up.
There is ONE gripe however, beware of a sudden "Out of Memory!" error which could hit harder than the game's true last boss himself!
Oh but one last plus: Did I forget to mention that one can bring a "wing in arms" along the way locally? (There is Co-Op!) and this will make many of the fights much easier! Have fun!

Wonderful homage to the arcade and genesis era. It's so much more than just a reference, though. I would consider it the evolution of the genre.

Worth it just for the first levels bgm, sooooooo goooood!!!! And the game is badass!
HANGENKI should be stuffed into an arcade cabinet with beefy speakers and brought to 'Dave & Busters' or 'Round 1' ASAP!!!
Games like this really could help to ressurect the arcade scene.
I'll tell it to you straight, Alien Invaders on extreme steroids. Many different weapons to experience and tons of challenges. Very entertaining.
This game takes all the fun of Galaga and quadruples it. Definitely try it out.
