Neat little character-focused RTS. Story is basic, but has a neat twist. The camera is difficult to deal with at times. Overall decent.
This game is great if you like the dual characters as you play. I personally am not a fan of that type of genre. The game runs smooth for never having to play fullscreen. I wish they had a neutral setting for for suggesting a game.
Review at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tFI4J6Vep0&t=16s
Nothing more to add from other reviews in the neutral opinion camp. I just think it deserves a nod rather than a thumbs down. It's really not a bad game for the money if you get it on sale. It just has its flaws. I still generally enjoyed it.
My biggest annoyance... I just wish holding right click would allow for constant group movement in the direction of the mouse pointer instead of all the click, click, click, click, click....click, click, click, click....
I played, actual time, maybe around 25 to 30 hours and finished the game
Wow, blows any diablo-like or dungeon siege-like(1 & 2) game out of the sky ... for a couple of reasons.
PRO
*1 The story
*2 Character customization
*3 Weapon creation
4 graphics (i call the graphics for this game 'happy graphics')
5 OPTIONAL side quests/puzzles
CON
1 ah, yes, the beginning was a little quorky or slow the 1st 30 min.
2 i was not used to the controls (which were super simple) at 1st. But after i figured it out it was not a problem. EXAMPLE: when you are back in town, instead of right clicking every second to get somewhere, click and hold your left mouse button and the character will constantly run in that direction...( it's that AH HA!!! moment right there ;-) )
For a completed game, Pro's out weigh the Con's. I was very entertained all the way to the end. And I noticed those who only played less than an hour or even a couple hours gave a negative review, but i for one stuck with it and SO happy i did so.. The story PULLED me in! And my excitement was not for the end, like pulling a nail out of your hand, but excited for the ending, like opening a package for your birthday. And the ending....i was like "what in squashed red Aesher dung just happened?!" ~Ode to sacrifice~
Easy Controls-Easy to Play
With only the needed use of four fingers of your left hand (customizable) , a mouse in your right, the game was flowing. And when i was far enough and built enough legendary armor and weapons, all i need most of the time was to unlock the camera and the use of the Slow Down button. What is great about some of the controls in battle is the option of using your four fingers or the things you need are just a click away and ability buttons large enough you are not going to miss-click.
Would i play this game again, absolutely, on a higher difficulty, and customize the crap out of my characters.
Sailing in the huge ocean of steam's catalogue sometimes you find a sunken treasure. This is the case with Kyn, a game that every RPG enthusiast should try. Despite not being a AAA game it does have some brilliant solutions that most major RPGs lack.
Pros:
- A lot of good puzzles, challenging but never too intricate or frustrating.
- Rich and detailed graphics, with a unique style.
- Combat situations are varied and force the player do adopt different strategies. Charging headfirst is seldom a good idea!
- Crafting is simple but essential in the long run, since loot is mostly common weapons and crafting materials.
Cons:
- Loot is completely random, which can be frustrating when you explore whole side areas only to find some irrelevant treasure.
- Not many side quests and almost no choices during the story.
In closing, it's a real pity there is no sequel or extra contents. When you finish the game you'd want more!
I was a little worried about what to expect from this game. There aren't many professional reviews and the art style didn't blow me away. But Kyn turned out to be a decent RPG romp. It's not groundbreaking and doesn't contain the same "epic-ness" that some of the old greats like Baldur's Gate have. But it has a fairly interesting story, characters, and combat system. The game is broken up into about 18 missions which each take between 30-60 mins to complete. These individual missions often contain unique scenarios or mechanics, like escorting npcs, solving puzzles to advance through the map, etc. There were a few minor bugs along the way but nothing game breaking. Dropped loot and items from chests throughout the maps was a let down as it heavily focused upon a range of crafting materials. Crafting itself was "ok" and seemed the only was to get the higher tier weapons and armor. If I had to use one word to describe this game it would be "competent". The individual elements of the game were alright, if somewhat uninspired, but in total it was a pleasant experience with fun combat that I don't regret purchasing. I'd give this one a 6/10.
Verdict: 7/10 (2/10)
Light RPG employing combat with tactical pause that will satisfy casual RPG players but will leave hardcore RPG players deeply unsatisfied. Character customization is poor. Item crafting is simple but powerful. Quests are fairly linear, but interesting due to their variety. On sale, it’s a great buy for casual RPG players.
PrivateJoh’s personal (re)view:
Kyn is a game oriented to casual RPG players (the same reasons these will love it will make hardcore RPG players hate it). Let’s me explain why.
Kyn is a party oriented game, form 2 up to 6 characters. The customization of the characters is …, well, original. The skill points can be randomly distributed at any time between 3 characteristics: mind, body and control. This will turn each character into a mage, fighter or ranger at any time, … and as many times as you want. For even further simplification, each character can only equip 2 abilities and 1 seed power (high level ability). So you can see the casual streak here.
The quests are linear, with a few side quests, also fairly linear. You get thrown into a map and just go to the point you are directed. Very casual streak here as well.
The tactical pause in the combat is well resolved. Instead of a complete pause, it’s a slowed down version of the combat. Well done. As for difficulty, normal is fairly simple, but higher levels will put a tougher challenge (however, as Kyn is oriented to casual players, I don’t know whether these levels will be relevant). Now, the 2 abilities and 1 seed power come in really handy and are actually well balanced for gameplay.
Personally, I liked it. My main criticism is that I found the maps rather asymmetric, some being much longer than others. This makes the longer maps feel too long. Other than that, not much to complain about.
In summary:
Kyn is a very interesting option for casual RPG players that get bogged down in races, attributes, skills, abilities, etc, characteristic of other RPG games. Kyn offers effective and simple gameplay with sufficient RPG elements.

This game could be better even can be compared to dungen siege but it has a lot of bugs and limited gameplay
Sound sometimes go off, numbers fly around and your character stuck and you have to either load latest save or restart the level.
Weapons is unbalanced, common weapon has more attributes than epic and rare one WTH!!
If you loved Dungeon Siege you will enjoy this game otherwise dont play this
I really want to like this game. The setting sounds interesting, the graphics are OK, the controls are managable. However, this game is a glitchfest. Save at the wrong spot, and one of your characters will be stuck in Limbo for good. If you peruse the quick save system, this will be the end of your game, you'll have to start over. Also, the entire game has a steep learning curve, you have to learn a lot of the details by yourself. You will often kill some enemies easily, just to go a bit further and die. At that point you'll have to re-load your last save.
This game pretty much consists of mashing quick save and quick load.
At least to the point I got the characters have exactly the same skill set, so the only difference is which direction one specialises. While this sure has its advantages, it also gives the game less variety. In games like Icewind Dale you have different people with different skill sets, here you can switch pretty much any time. Except of course in battle, then you have to mash quick load.
I might have the right mindset for dark souls, but not for this...
Remember Dungeon Siege? That cool looking RPG by Gas Powered Games (currently known as Wargaming Seattle)? It was pretty slow game, but there was certain something in it that makes people remember it even today. Even more so because the third installment in Dungeon Siege series was completely different from previous two and was more like consoles-oriented action game than what everybody used to enjoy. Why am I telling you all that? Well, the thing is, Kyn is a lot like the very first Dungeon Siege. Actually, you can even tell that it's a Dungeon Siege III everybody wanted. In a way.
In this game we get a lot of things we used to like in Dungeon Siege. Familiar controls and battle mechanics (actually, those work even better here thanks to a pretty nice slow motion mode that acts like paused mode in Baldur's Gate), a big inventory with a lot of items, big maps that sometimes require different characters to perform different tasks at the same time... The game looks and feels like a proper Dungeon Siege spiritual successor. Unfortunately, unlike Dungeon Siege, Kyn isn't a big AAA title. It was developed by a small Dutch indie team in a pretty small house that you can easily find and see in Google. It may not be a big problem in other case, but it's a big problem here. The thing is – Dungeon Siege was pretty slow and pretty dull game. It was really fun and addictive, but it was one of those cases, where graphics played a big role. The game wanted you to watch your team running from A to B for minutes with nothing happening at all, but since everything there looked OMG how good, it wasn't really a problem. Quite the opposite, it was fun to watch your team running. Exactly because the game used to give you a chance to stop playing and start enjoying the views. And in this game... there's nothing to see, really. It isn't ugly, no, but it sure doesn't look like Witcher 3. It's barely on Torchlight level even on max settings. So, watching your team slowly moving from A to be B here sure isn't as fun as it was in Dungeon Siege.
And problems don't stop there. Unlike many other indie games in Steam, this one doesn't feel broken and abandoned, but it sure feels like developers wanted to put more stuff in it and just didn't have enough time. The game doesn't have enough optional stuff (every single quest in the game have its own achievement and there's nothing else), every new part of the main quest is done like a separate map and you can't even re-visit the previous areas. Some features (like camera rotation) are unfinished, there are minor bugs here and there, while the balance is all over the place. For example, it looks like the game was supposed to rely on crafting a lot. You'll get tons of crafting materials, even as the rewards from well hidden chests, but crafting itself doesn't even worth it most of the time. Not like I'm complaining, I hate crafting in video games, but it just feels weird to have such a big part of the game relying on something so... useless. Finally, there's a humor... Yeah, that cheap humor that feels more like a complex. Like you know, when developers feel uncomfortable about their product and try to say “Hey! Why so serious?” without having any taste of humor. A lot of indie teams have this problem and that's exactly what we have here. Pathetic, really. Especially since the main story barely exists and you'll want to skip it like you usually do in the MMO games. Like “OK, OK, whatever! Just let me to press buttons already!”
Not sure how I feel about the leveling system too. There's no experience in this game. Instead, after the every mission, when you get in the safe town, you get some points to spend on three (yep, only three) main attributes. In this game we have only “Mind”, “Body” and “Control”. "Mind" for magic, "Body" for close combat and "Control" for archery. The trick is – you can freely move points from one stat to another, which may be pretty fun, because you can easily turn your pure mage into a heavy tank on go in just a few clicks. It is fun in a way, but at the same time it's pretty dull and you'll want to spend more time developing your characters. So yeah, I don't know how I feel about all that.
And still, I don't want to downvote this game. For $20 you get some Dungeon Siege nostalgia that... well... works a bit, I guess. What Kyn did absolutely perfectly is that it captured the pace. When it's about pace, it is Dungeon Siege. So, if you hated that nonsense called Dungeon Siege III and want to turn on some audiobooks, or favorite music and enjoy something slow like the first DS, instead of re-playing it for 9999x time... A single run in Kyn probably worth it. Familiar pace and controls, weird leveling system and cute (unfortunately, only cute) look, together with some nice maps can provide you some good mood during a cold lonely night. And if there'll be a big discount one day, I'd say give Kyn a chance for sure. But don't expect anything big. Even though Kyn is pretty cute title, it's still an indie game that tries to achieve more than it possibly can and failing in oh so many ways.
There was a mission where you had to escort 5 squishy villagers through a map full of unclearable mines and undestroyable rapid-fire towers. If any of the villagers died, the mission immediately ended.
One of the first abilities you get in the game allows you to resurrect people from death. But you can't use it on the villagers.
Pros:
-Crating
-Missions
-Character Resets(Don't want to that guy to be a tank anymore? Reset him to an archer for free)
-Puzzles, some of which are optional, but if solved, reward you with a nice piece of loot
Cons:
-Graphics are a bit lacking
-Bugs
-Clunky camera and controls.
-Game just feels slow over all, like I'm bored out of my mind, and their isn't anything to keep me wanting to play
-Very linear zones
-Most NPCs' dialogs are flat, and don't provide you with anything. Basically if their isn't an icon over the NPC's head, don't bother chatting
-Loot is almost always a crafting mat
-Story or Charactes, or both, couldn't hold my attention
As some others have noted, hard to give a thumbs up or down on this one. It has some good elements, but has some very obvious bugs, like the level 1 trap skill deciding not to activate, even with swarms of enemies standing on it. It is really bad when the first skill you get in the game, has a bug.
Most mobs are easily dispatched, but I find the healing/caster mobs annoying. It seems their full hp heal has no cool down or a very low one. It becomes a bit challenging, on the higher difficulties, if you ever get two of these together, as they will just spam heal each other.
Character development is a bit too bland, you don't get xp points for killing enemies or performing quests, instead you get stat points for performing missions. Skills are unlocked when you have x stat points allocated.
I can't explain why, after 15 minutes of play, the game has a serious logic issue : "neutral" enemies attack you, but your party won't attack them back (and die due to stupidity and lack of survival instinct). This doesn't make sense in an "party-arpg" style of game. Maybe there's a special option or button or maneuver somewhere but the game wasn't "kind enough" to show it to me, so I uninstalled the game.
Been awhile since i touched a game like this, but i don't regret it.
It's been fun to play this game so far.
It may not be the best game ever, but it has enough going on that it stays interesting for atleast 5 hours into the game (how far i have come at the point of this review.)
The story is ok,
the graphics are good,
the combat is fun but not exactly hard (if you want a challenge the higher difficulties may be your thing),
The crafting / loot etc is good.
I haven't encountered any bugs and the only thing that annoyed me was that the load time was horrid on best graphics. (so i changed it to fastest, and it loads up in 10 seconds)
So all in all it's a solid 7/10,
which means: If you like these kinds of games, you shouldn't regret getting this.
Just don't expect an epic game.
Kyn is a unique isometric ARPG, which offers linear missions and slow-mo tactical combat. Skills/abilities are limited to two per class plus an additional based off items. Tangrin based in the Netherlands is essentially a two-man operation. These creators definitely show their love for RPG's and game development but lacked the necessary broad stroke. Kyn suffers in a few areas. That isn't to say it's a bad game. It just could've been more.
The Good:
Visuals mixed with an exciting soundtrack.
Inventive re-working of a tactical combat system.
Level design and interactive puzzles.
Challenging gameplay experience.
The Bad:
Camera controls that feel lacking.
UI which feels generic.
Skills/Abilities which are not expansive.
Underdeveloped NPC interactions.
The Ugly:
Storyline, with the dialogue. It's extremely bland and is underwritten.
Extremely underwhelming animations.
AI tracking system for mobs.
Character customization and item customization.
Overall, Kyn is a decent ARPG. You'll have fun with it, if you're into the genre. The character customization could have been better. Yes, you can craft and ingredients drop from everything but it just had a bland approach. The three skill tree have 80 or so skills all together. Certain skills are more powerful than others and it really didn't feel balanced nor synergized. I will give it a recommendation if you're looking for a tactical ARPG. There are much better options for the $19.99 price tag on the market. Giving it a 6.5/10 score.
I am very torn. I wanted it to be more than it is. Here are a few things I don't like. The UI is very very touchy. They throw you right into the mix with a "good luck" and a prayer. The leveling system seems a bit off. The AI is pretty horrible.
But all this being said, I am still playing it. I hoping that maybe it is just me and that I'll be surprised a few days in. I would buy it again, while on sale. Full price seems a bit high.
I like this game but i feel it needs alot to be done yet... the feeling if like playing Divinity: Original sin really kinda slow gameplay with puzzles...
The things i would like to see implemented to keep playing:
1- Be able to cast more than 2 abilities
2- More coloured and detailed interface specially the character panel
3- Be able to change keybindings
I am conflicted with Kyn.
On the one hand the developers are great at responsing to their customers and have really done a great job in creating such a pretty game. Visually it is a treat and for the most part the game is great. Many people like it and gave it good reviews and they are fine.
I have never had so much trouble deciding if to recommend a game or not as I have with this game, there is nothing wrong in partiular with the game, just a lot of little things that add up to making me regret my purchase. I undersatnd the combat and the skills after playing games like Pillars of Eternity and enjoy the system, but it feels totally unblanced and bland, many skills being worthless and only being able to equip 2 skills and 1 feed skill per character at any time feels limiting.
The maps are linear which is fine, but they feel too big for what they are and many times you find yourself going exploring expecting to find something cool only to be met with a dead end and nothing there. Which brings me to chests. To open a chest the team 'attack it' which seems odd considering chest have hinges and handles and could be just opened, it felt like they ran out of time to make an opening chest animation.
Also the loot is very boring, 90% crafting material and not much actual gear. Which is fine, because there is a lot of things to craft, but again, with the crafting the loot drops are pointless because you can buy all the crafting material from the vendor next to the crafter. It just feels unecessary.
Is a shame cause I was really excited to play the game, but it just feels like an early access title to me, which to the developers credit they are doing a stellar job listening to the community and are in the process of adding a rotating camera, so I still hold hope of being able to finish the game one day, but added to the long load times every time you die I simply do not have the drive to play the game. I really want to get into it, but like a word you are on the brink of remembering I just cannot find that spark.
TL:DR it is not a bad game, in fact in many ways it is good, but sadly it lacks atmosphere.
Kyn reminds me of the first Dungeon Siege. A dungeon crawler with no set class system that focuses on exploring.
Instead of a vast open world we are given a central hub and go adventuring on missions. I'm not too fond of this system but the devs definitely make it work for this game.
The art style is interesting and reminds me of Torchlight. It is a bit cartoony but the colorful enviroments and art style flows well with the feel of the game.
Apparently this game has multiple endings which offer replayability. I've played for 3 hours upon writing this review and I'm still at the very beginning. Each mission is an entire map of it's own and can take up to an hour or so to completely explore it. The devs must have known that dungeon explorers like me have OCD when it comes to exploring.
The battle system is real-time with a slowmo feature instead of completely pausing the game. This feature is surprisingly better than just pausing and unpausing the game to make quick tactical decision.
I was looking for a dungeon crawler similar to Diablo, POE, and etc but what I found was a magnificient gem.
A great game.A lot of variety in the missions. They are well thought out. These missions take an entire map to explore in order to complete. It can take hours to complete one mission.
I like the skill system that can be adjusted on the fly.
The combat is similair to Arklash but Kyn has a paused slow mo on a timer. If you like to individually control each group member, pick their skills and craft their items then this game is for you.
If you play Grim Dawn,Victor Vran,Arklash,Van Helsing or any other similair game then make room in your library as this deserves a spot there.
I guess if your into exploring every corner of the map then your looking at roughly 35-45hrs of game play with time spent at hub getting crafted gear.I'm playing on hard and there are two more harder levels above hard.
I can't imagine anyone enjoying ARPG not liking this.Oh yeah you can control a 6 member party and configure each members play style.
i read someone's review and saw that he was complaining about not locking the mouse in screen when using multiple monitors. and i just saw in update that you fixed it. thank you on his behalf for fixing it.
I appreciate it that devs are listening to other people.
So here is my real review. (my first ever)
I have done about 5 missions now, and what an AWESOME game.
Not only to be created by no less than 2 people, which is a feat worth applause in my opinion.
Pros & Improvements
+ created by 2 people
+ gameplay is effective and works (no bugs as for me so far)
+ not a 3 hour game (looking at my 9,4 hours of gameplay, which includes side quests, and being at the 5th mission)
+ smooth map scrolling
+ the slow time effect DOES give you an strategic advantage (if used correctly ofcourse)
+/- map rotation is a bit of an obstacle (since when looking for chest some trees dont dissappear / fade)
+/- no option to choose what kind of character /class you want to begin with (so you need to equip your character
yourself with desired equipment)
+/- I had one chrash so far (dont know what caused it tho, could be my pc)
+/- Somehow at loading screens it looks like the pc is not responding for just a little time and then it works again. (could
also be a pc problem but this is the first game it occurred with)
So basically it is DEFINITELY worth your money!! Because it doesnt have gamebreaking bugs, and it flows like a riverstream.
And the +/- in my review are definitely NOT the reason why you should NOT buy the game!!
So lets have fun!!
