An up-and-coming scholar named Charlotte L. Wells has had her interest piqued by this local legend and desperately wishes to study it in person—but of course, Harlech Island is no place for an unescorted young lady. To aid her in her investigation, therefore, she enlists the help of an old childhood friend and fallen knight who agrees to accompany her on this adventure.
Arriving in Harlech and catching sight of Castle Strangerock almost immediately, Char dives into researching the mystery head-on, leaving her companion to explore the surrounding environs on his own in search of any artifacts that might help trace the origins of this ephemeral stronghold.
Sadly, this almost immediately leads to his death at the hands of a mysterious swordsman seemingly displaced in time...but death is to be only the beginning of his adventure.
Xanadu Next is an exploration-centric action RPG from Nihon Falcom, the acclaimed creators of the Ys and The Legend of Heroes RPG franchises. A late entry in their immensely popular Dragon Slayer series and a spiritual follow-up to the late ‘80s cult classic Faxanadu, Xanadu Next puts players in the shoes of a gravely injured knight given a new lease on life through ancient magic who must now seek a legendary sword called “Dragon Slayer” to ensure his survival.
Players will fight hordes of monsters in real time while exploring the lush, mysterious and perilous environments of Harlech Island, along with the ruins of an ancient paradise known as Xanadu that was partially inspired by tales of the Mongolian emperor Kublai Khan. Along the way, players will uncover bits and pieces of Xanadu’s past in the form of ancient stone tablets and memorandums, piecing together a complex tale of magic, war, an ancient dragon, and a mysterious figure known only as the “Black Bride.”
Features
An Interconnected World Full of Secrets
- Icy peaks connect with fiery caverns, old waterways, mystical forests and magical ruins, creating one single giant map to explore with countless secret passageways, alternate routes, shortcuts, hidden items, deadly bosses and new techniques to uncover.
Real-Time Combat with Dozens of Unique Abilities
- Fight ruthless enemies in real time, using a wide variety of skills to aid you. As in Ys SEVEN, skills are attached to weapons and can be learned through repeated use of those weapons, adding an element of excitement and promise to every new armament found.
Exploration Rewarded with Rich Backstory
- Stone tablets and old letters are scattered throughout the ruins on Harlech Island, each written in an ancient tongue. Fortunately, your companion is an accomplished scholar who can translate them for you in real time, providing valuable insight into important events and mythologies from the age of Xanadu.
Unique Gameplay Systems that Keep the Experience Fresh
- Players can choose to level-down in order to tweak their stats, fuse themselves with “Guardians” to gain new passive abilities, learn spells, and even carve keys from monster bones to lessen demand for pre-made keys and keep their prices low.
Atmospheric Visuals and Music in Classic Falcom Tradition
- Inspired by hardcore dungeon RPGs of the '80s and created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Xanadu, one of Japan's action RPG forefathers, Xanadu Next mimics the gritty, medieval look of its ancestor, but in full 3D and with ample amounts of subtle detailing, as well as a foreboding and wholly unique soundtrack composed by Falcom's venerable Sound Team jdk.

its a good game that reminds me of Vagrant Story, and that's high praise. Its got some 2005 jank, but I would whole heartedly recommend.
Good-ass game.
Fantastic "little" game that got me addicted. Very simple but effective mechanics. It's repetitive but doesn't stretch your patience for too long.
But more than the gameplay being gripping, it's very atmospheric and neat in the art department despite the somewhat underwhelming graphics.
It treats its story with respect, keeping a nice mystery until the end. My favorite thing was the soundtrack, with clear references to A Link to the Past in several songs, while sounding like the best late 90s/early 00s synth/orchestral cd stuff.
It also has some proto-souls elements, from the workings of some items to the touch of darkness in the atmosphere.
This is a really, really great dungeon crawler from the PS1 era that never caught on because 1. it was originally released on the Nokia NGage and 2. the controls, while something you can get used to, are kind of baffling.
Eysometric zelda x dark souls
Heard very good things about it, bought it and was enjoying it.
Got to a boss and was having a hard time defeating it and needed a break, so I respawned to my last save (right before the boss) for a last time, and quit the game. Came back not so long after and the save I got back into was 1h30min earlier than the last save I had actually done. Honestly, kinda petty to leave a bad review for this since it wouldn't take all that long to reach where I was, but I'm doing this more as a warning for people who don't want to lose progress in a similar situation than anything else.
For now, I'm done with the game. Will reinstall it maybe on my steam deck and finish it there (and update the review after), but until then I'll leave this negative review as a warning for those who want to get into the game. Regardless of my grievances, when discounted the game is definitely worth its asking price and can be quite enjoyable.
Well...ehh...err...WOW...I cant describe the game honestly.
The story, the lore and the world are great, I love learning about Xanadu through the memoirs and tablets, nice way to tell the history of the world in short but "necessary" texts, it makes the ending feel a bit different. The gameplay is simple just pay to attention to some mechanics and you will be alright. The music is catchy and memorable and I loved the boss fight music.
9/10.
Good game. Has a mish mash of a lot genres and it all works together. Definitely shows its age a bit in certain mechanics but overall a classic and perhaps ahead of its time.
GAMEPLAY:
-A basic yet tight and satisfying gameplay loop that stays fun until the end.
-Fun old-school level design with simple puzzles and minimal exploration.
-Little to no grinding is required.
STORY/WORLD:
-A fun and chill fantasy story that is surprisingly very well told.
-Interesting characters that grow as the story progresses.
TECHNICAL:
-I had a couple of visual bugs that sorted themselves out.
-The Xbox controller didn't work for me but the Dualshock did. (Note: the game is designed for M&KB but I prefer using the controller, if you do too then keep in mind that you'll still have to use the mouse to use the shops, and equip gear/spells.)
This game probably won't work for a lot of people. It's a classic JRPG wearing the skin of a Diablo clone, and I mean CLASSIC - this is the company that made Ys 1 and 2, and it shows here. Expect grinding, and a lot of it; you are expected to be most, if not all of the way to max level before you complete this game, and you'll frequently find yourself dealing 1-2 damage with your normal attacks because you've wandered too deep before your levels and gear could catch up to you.
That said, I've always found a certain kind of charm to games like this, and if you're in the mood for a grindy JRPG, there's a lot to love about this one. There's a fun variety of skills and spells, and the game focuses on experimentation and flexibility rather than committing to a build as in other Diablo-likes, which I think is the right choice here. The combat is also surprisingly nuanced for this type of game; your main combat loop involves baiting enemy attacks to get behind them for critical damage (there's that Ys influence again), so precisely positioning your character is more important than ever. Overall, a solid game if you approach it with the right mindset.
8/10, much better than the Nokia N-Gage version.
(That's not a joke, this game had a Nokia N-Gage version.)
One of Falcom's most overlooked games. The setting is pretty unique for a Falcom game, feeling darker than anything else I've played from them. The area and dungeon designs are good, as usual. You have a simple hub, and through your exploration, you find shortcuts that return there. Finding these shortcuts gave a good sense of progress and helped make the world feel interconnected. Combat was relatively simple, but the game provided freedom for your desired character build. The story is also straightforward but still engaging. While I did not find Xanadu Next as enjoyable as the Ys and Trails games, it is still another great game out of Falcom's catalog that deserves more recognition.

Good! Next!
i dont like it, control is very horrible and outdated, for a 2016 game it is very dated, reminded me of a bad port of an old game.
Seru banget
Stop making me use the garbage weapon on the final boss Falcom
A fun dungeon crawler with a nice interconnected map ala Dark Souls 1 that leads back to the main town/hub area. Puzzles are a good difficulty, and there are some nice secrets to explore if you pay attention. There's also a bonus dungeon at the end if you still want more after beating the game. I really enjoyed this game. A hidden gem for sure.
one of the BEST games i have ever played in my life. i love it.
if you're ever played any of the original Ys games, or any PS2 RPGs in general, you will get a lot out of this!
It's a decent game that probably was great for its time, but aging has not been fair to it. However, I can honestly say that this would make a great contender for a remake with new visuals and combat, much like how the SNES version of Trials of Mana got remade for the PS4. I would not want to play the SNES version of ToM but I loved every second of the PS4 remake.
Some things about Xanadu Next:
- Very basic combat (gets repetitive)
- Interesting (but simple) bosses
- Interesting story and big parts of the story are optional (manually reading tablets and grimoires)
- A lot of leveling customization, allowing for more than one playthrough (mage vs fighter mostly)
- You can min-max late game if you wish (but there is no need to)
Nonetheless, I cannot recommend the game in its current form, unless you somehow are driven by nostalgia. It just does not hold up very well 2024.
Well... what is there to say. Its Nihoh Falcom. They're incapable of making a bad RPG.
cool gam.
Good game.
Flawed but fun gem of a game
补票了,当时那个选择较少的年代给我提供过不少乐趣,永远支持falcom,祝越来越好。
Purchased for old times sake, and in those days when there were fewer choices, it provided me with a lot of fun. I will always support Falcom and wish it all the best.
GOTY 2024
Feels like a classic PS2 rpg, but on PC. It's kind of like the older Ys games, with a mix of rpg conventions, hack n slash combat, and platforming puzzles.
It has controller support, and controllers really feel better in this game than mouse and keyboard, tbh. With a mouse you're holding left click and dragging your character around like an old-fashioned mmo. With a controller it has action controls, like an ys game.
Great sense of progression, rewarding exploration, fun combat, and doesn't waste your time. The game has a satisfying, old-school feel (no hand holding), without the old-school clunkiness (fairly smooth gameplay). Easy recommendation.
Thanks to PrettyCody's YouTube review for bringing this game to my attention.
little sister packs u undercooked chicken for lunch, best game
Dark souls and Zelda had a ps2 era baby
Just what the doctor ordered.
the gameplay is suprisingly fluid. this is nice
The classic gameplay loop of kill monster > return to upgrade is strong in this game, and I love it. The story is quite good, a lot of it is told through Logs which were localized well. it's pretty much a Diablo made by early Falcom so if that sounds appealing to you go for it!.
My only complaint is the crate puzzles they do be annoying especially near the end as there was a sequence where you do three puzzles nearly one after the other.
skyrim but with good dungeons
This game is amazing for what it is. The story and gameplay feels great even in it's clunkyness (game is old). But this is a true hidden gem really.
Xanadu Next, was an entertaining arpg. I really enjoyed the level grind - level ups. They were a huge difference in levels. Same goes for gear in the game. You really feel the difference between the weapons and armor. It was a decent length so I feel like I got my money's wroth out of it. It is not for everyone but for the old school arpg fans pick it up and give it a shot.

Dungeon crawling bliss. Combat is quick, simple, and satisfying, and the dungeon -> town -> dungeon loop is super crispy. Highly recommended.
Xanadu Next
There’s something special about Xanadu Next that’s hard to put into words.
From the moment I set foot on Harlech Island, I was hooked.
It’s not a game that dazzles you with spectacle or speed.
Instead, it invites you to explore its quiet, forgotten world at your own pace, and that’s where its magic lies.
Atmosphere | 9/10
The atmosphere is absolutely haunting.
Every step through the misty ruins feels like you’re uncovering a long-lost secret.
There’s a real sense of loneliness and history that sinks in as you explore the decaying world.
It’s beautiful in a way that only something forgotten can be.
Exploration | 9/10
Exploration is the heart of Xanadu Next.
The world may not be huge, but it’s packed with secrets.
I loved retracing my steps, finding new keys or clues that unlocked areas I had passed earlier.
Every discovery felt earned, like I was piecing together a puzzle no one had touched in ages.
Combat | 7/10
The combat isn’t flashy, but it’s satisfying.
It’s slow and thoughtful, rewarding patience over recklessness.
Every swing feels meaningful, and it makes the battles tense and rewarding without being overwhelming.
Music | 8/10
The music really adds to the experience.
It’s soft and melancholic, perfectly matching the game’s tone.
It’s the kind of soundtrack that stays with you, making each quiet moment of exploration feel even more personal.
Difficulty | 8/10
It’s challenging but never unfair.
You’ll die a few times, sure, but it never feels frustrating.
Each defeat teaches you something, and coming back stronger always feels rewarding.
It’s a steady climb rather than a brutal struggle.
Story | 7/10
The story is subtle, and you have to work for it.
But that’s part of what I loved.
It’s told through artifacts and small moments, giving you just enough to keep you curious.
It’s not a grand narrative, but there’s beauty in its quiet, mysterious unfolding.
Puzzles & Progression | 7/10
Progression is slow but meaningful.
It’s not just about leveling up, it’s about solving puzzles, finding new paths, and discovering hidden areas.
Every step forward feels earned, which makes even small victories feel like big accomplishments.
Graphics | 6/10
Yes, the graphics are dated, but they have a charm that fits the game perfectly.
The fog, the worn-down structures, and the muted colors all add to the feeling of being in a forgotten world.
It may not be cutting-edge, but it’s full of atmosphere.
Xanadu Next is one of those games that quietly pulls you in and doesn’t let go.
It’s a slow burn, but if you’re patient and enjoy unraveling mysteries, it’s an unforgettable experience.
>Focus on lore over plot
>Melancholic and bleak atmosphere
>Dark fantasy aesthetics and setting
>Backstab heavy combat that's more difficult than the average game
>Hub area where all the NPCs reside at
>Only being able to increase your stat points with the help of a religious female NPC who revived you from the brink of death after the tutorial
>Metroidvania style level design that loops in on itself and unlocks shortcuts to the hub area
Xanadu Next is Falcom's Dark Souls and it predates Dark Souls by 6 years.
Alright in all seriousness though.
Xanadu Next came out in 2005 in Japan, but other than a port to Nokia's N-Gage of all things, Xanadu Next never left Japan until over a decade later in 2016 when XSEED released a worldwide localized PC port for it.
Xanadu Next is a pretty unique title for Falcom because not only is it a spin-off of their iconic and influential 1985 action RPG Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu and the first Xanadu title to be released in over 10 years, but also because it's more of an old-school Western style RPG, Diablo-like dungeon crawler with a dark fantasy aesthetic more akin to the Kings Field or Dark Souls series than the more traditional anime style Falcom have become known for with their Trails and Ys series.
I think the first and most important thing to mention about Xanadu Next is the atmosphere. Out of every Falcom game I've ever played Xanadu Next has the best atmosphere bar none. It's a dark, melancholic and bleak atmosphere which is fitting of the dark fantasy setting. The lore of the world, the environments, the music, it all helps enhance this atmosphere. Speaking of the music, this score is much different from what Falcom does with Ys or Trails, this isn't the heavy melodic rock with electric guitars or violins that those games feature, but a much lighter sounding, often times ethereal and orchestral score fitting of a darker and more atmospheric game like Xanadu Next.
In Xanadu Next you play as a dishonored and disgraced knight, you can name them whatever you want as this character fills the role as the common silent protagonist type. This knight is accompanied by a scholar named Charlotte L. Wells who is much like a sister to him as they both set out on a quest to investigate the ruins of Harlech Island. However after an encounter with a mysterious swordsman at the start of his expedition he is mortally wounded and undergoes a life saving ritual which binds him to the island. Now the only thing that can truly save our protagonist and give him his life back is the fabled, legendary sword the Dragon Slayer, so he sets off on an adventure to find this legendary weapon.
The main narrative itself is solid with some unexpected twists, but it's further enhanced by the actual presentation because there's not much dialogue or many cutscenes and instead as you're exploring the island of Harlech you can discover ancient tablets and memoirs with bits of lore that tell legends and myths of the ancient lost city of Xanadu. I would go as far to say that if you don't read these bits of lore you would probably think the game doesn't even have much of a story until the very end and then you'd be confused about what's going on. This is a very similar storytelling approach that FromSoft and most Souls-like in general apply and it really helps enhance the atmosphere and world-building of Xanadu Next without pulling focus away from the frenetic action packed combat as you get the option to slowly piece together the mysteries of an ancient civilization on each of your returns to the main hub area after exploring dungeons and this also allows the player to see how these legends are often relevant to Charlotte and our Knight's current situation.
Falcom are masters of world-building, I'd say it's what they're best at and Xanadu Next is certainly no exception because reading every bit of lore was so rewarding especially once I got to the finale of the game and the twists were revealed. Much like Trails and Ys, the few NPC characters in the main hub area town all have dialogue that refreshes after each main event and go on their own mini story arcs, they aren't static people with stock text, they're all people with their own goals and worries and that always makes the world and setting feel even more immersive.
Xanadu Next tells a solid narrative with fantastic world-building, but that isn't the main focus of this game, much like the older Ys titles this is a game that focuses on giving a great gameplay experience through rewarding combat and exploration and that's exactly what it does best. As previously mentioned, Xanadu Next despite being a J-RPG takes a much more Western approach to its design which only takes one look at the inventory screen to see it was clearly inspired by Diablo and other classic isometric style C-RPGs.
Combat in Xanadu Next is simple at first glance, but has a lot more depth when you get deeper into the game. Like most dungeon crawlers basic combat is just walking up to enemies and hitting them with the attack button, but positioning is important as well because hitting an enemy in the back deals more damage and critical hits and hitting them from the front gives the enemy a higher chance to evade your attacks. Another important factor of combat are the skills and spells, skills are special attacks tied to weapons that you can permanently learn by maxing out that weapons proficiency meter, these usually mess with enemies positioning by knocking them down or moving them to the side, spells are elemental and every enemy has elemental weaknesses and resistances so the right spell could deal serious bonus damage or accidentally heal an enemy instead. The strong emphasis the combat places on positioning, skills and spells and deciding when to use them (They all have finite uses until you refresh them at a save point or in town) or which ones to use really gives the combat in Xanadu Next an extra level of strategy. It can certainly be janky at times and difficult too especially at boss fights, but it's also incredibly satisfying as well.
Combat aside, the other major focus of Xanadu Next is the actual exploration, this is a dungeon crawler after all. Exploring the various caves, forest and ruins of ancient civilizations was always a joy because of all the new equipment and secrets that are being thrown at you, also plenty of Zelda-like puzzles to solve where you might have to equip a certain piece of gear that gives you special abilities to walk under water or crush walls to make it to the next area. There's also a LOT of puzzles involving moving boxes and those can get a bit tedious. However I am a big fan of how the level design is very Metroidvania style where you're constantly finding shortcuts that loop back around to the main hub area much like Firelink Shrine in Dark Souls. However since this is an older game some of the dungeons can be a bit maze-like at times and the environments can get a bit samey, but thankfully you always have a map so it's not as bad as a lot of other games like this.
Xanadu Next is a dark and atmospheric dungeon crawler with a narrative that is mysterious and compelling enough that it makes you want to set out on the adventure and lore and world-building that keeps you constantly engrossed and immersed as one would expect from Falcom combined with fun and addictive combat that has a surprising amount of strategic depth and exploration that is constantly rewarding making Xanadu Next a true hidden gem among Falcom's catalog and truly like nothing else they develop nowadays (This is coming from a massive Trails and Ys fan btw) which just makes me love and appreciate it even more and whether you're a big Falcom fan or not if you want a game to scratch that fast paced dungeon crawler itch and you don't mind a more difficult experience than most games or a bit of jank at times, Xanadu Next might just be the one for you.
It's a no for me.
Very Fun game it's like classic Zelda, but for the love of god use DgVoodoo to improve performance.
hidden gem
There should be more games like this
First off, the story is great. But also everything else, great dungeon crawler.
Speaking as someone who has bounced off the Ys games, I am really glad I gave this title a shot. It's a super charming, simple-but-refined action rpg that confidently understands what it's going for.
It doesn't do anything new, it just does everything it sets out to well. Gear is limited but impactful, as every new weapon brings with it a new skill. Combat mostly involves baiting out enemy attacks and circling behind them for an accuracy/damage boost, but this is made interesting in group fights where you are trying to juggle multiple foes at once.
Boss fights are a real highpoint, despite these simple mechanics they are varied and involve unique mechanics and phases. Most of them took me a few tries to complete, but I never felt they were insurmountable, I just need to refine my build and strategy, maybe purchase some new armor, and get back in there.
The story is fine and does not get in the way of the gameplay, and the visuals and audio are pique classic 3D rpg. The soundtrack deserves special mention.
Easy recommend for anyone that likes aRPGs, it's even got an optional endgame random dungeon with unique loot if you want to spend a little more time with it after the campaign!
Great Game Defintely worth the price. I have 0 complaints
WARNING
Do not go full magic build. There is a boss later in the game that is immune to magic. A hybrid build is best or just going straight into weapon based stats. That being said if you are able to get past this boss and max magic you will 1 cycle any boss with likely 1 spell.
I like it.
After playing this game for nearly 40 hrs i can say that Xanadu next is a hidden master piece but with some flaws that can be fixed in future installments, the game nailed it with the theme, music and vibe, but the battle mechanics and the controls feels alil wonky, ill be honest the moment i got used to the controls i never looked back and enjoyed my experince but i can see how this problem can scare new comers, if you want a classic rpg crawler with damn good style and music pick it up and enjoy it in your own way, im giving it a solid 8
Super fun little isometric action dungeon crawler with an alright story, pleasant characters, fantastic game feel, music, and atmosphere. The overall package is a good bit more than the sum of its parts and for that, I gotta recommend it. I will say, it isn't mind blowing or anything, but the world is packed with secrets, plenty to explore and lots of satisfying progression. Kind-of reminds me of a 2D zelda title in that respect. After a certain point I will say that gameplay gets a little underwhelming but is still very satisfying and fun, even if not all that challenging. The bosses all kick ass though and are a highlight of the game.
Overall its a solid B+. Pretty great!
