Post in steam launch options to fix fps issues.
Echelon
Is an old classic combat flight simulation in a Sci-Fi Setting where Aliens attack Earth with the help of portals and a lot of flying fighters and other Machines that the player have to fight against.
To accomplish this the Player gets a a variety of different fighter planes to choose from and different sorts of Weapons to equip onto them.
A positiv of the Game is clearly the easy learning curve to come into its control settings as also the nice built up missions where, depending on how good the mission worked, players get ranked up and also can climb the command ladder to be able to send commands to Wingmens in the Squad.
But sadly there is a huge bad Point to mention;
This Game does very likely not work, it does not start or misses any Buttons in the Start-Up-Menue (that can, as far as i was able to find, only be fixed with a patch created by another User who loved this Game enough to provide a fix for this Bug.
But if you dont want to use it, its very likely not able to be played and the Developers have not tried to fix it, sadly)
I am sadly not able to recommend this Game as long as this major Bug is still present (you can read about the *game does not start* bug by searching for it in the Internet)
---------------------------------
My personal Points i give the Game: (Average 5 / 10)
7 / 10 Grafics (For its time it had good graphics to be played)
6,8 / 10 Gameplay (Easy to go into Gameplay, sadly at one Point repetitive)
6,2 / 10 Quests (Clear Missions, but less immersive impact than it could have had)
0 / 10 Major-Bug (High chance that it will not start without a Fanmade Patch)
As already mentioned, sadly has a major bug why i can not recommend this Game. (If you want to buy it you should be prepared that it might not run without the Patch that one Fan has created)
I'm adding my two cents because a handful of [REDACTED] were too challenged to check the 'Guides' section to get this running, so they decided to review bomb this absolute gem.
Echelon is fun. Echelon is ARMA meets the original Ghost Recon BUT WITH SPACESHIPS. Really, I can't downplay how damn tactical this game is. It released in 2001? No way. Echelon is STILL ahead of it's time - and it's been two decades. If you enjoy flight simulators, or tactical/combat simulators in general, Echelon offers a level of realistic difficulty that hasn't been revisited by video games since - I'm not bluffing, I have a few hundred hours on Elite Dangerous (with comparable playtime in Elite and Frontier Elite to boot) - Echelon still catches my feeble mind off guard. My tactics are futile. My life is forfeit. I'm NOTHING to Echelon, and that's exactly how it should be.
Fun fact; Bethesda practically sabotaged this game, single-handedly destroying any chance of a fair release, and bankrupting the original developers. It's quite the heart-wrenching tale, Echelon would have been considered a stepping stone back then, and would be seen one of the many developments crucial to modern video games - had it launched, formally. But it didn't. As Echelon stands, it is a complete game with a few minor inconveniences due to a lack of TLC (thanks Bethesda for being soulless husks). Honestly, it might seem a little petty, but recognising the rich history in Echelon's trials and tribulations has made me regret every cent I've spent on anything owned by ZeniMax - I won't spend another.
The campaign is fun. There are fewer bugs than in modern releases, and it has some interesting little quirks, like a sandbox approach to completing objectives and a very realistic difficulty (fly an Apache over Russian soil right now and find out). The load/save systems can be a little clunky/unreliable at times, and you're really thrown in the deep end with very little guidance - but it really suits the game.
It has on offer what you'd find in some of the older combat/flight simulators (they're more like hardware showcases for the M1A1 and YF-22 to be fair), but in a space setting that really sets the mood. The retro cutscenes are wonderfully atmospheric, there's a dash of crude humour, and the armaments at your disposal couldn't be cooler. When you eventually finish the game or get bored - the multiplayer has bots and there is no (true) limit to how many you spawn - my hardware clocked out at about two thousand (2000) bots as far as I remember, please let me know how many you got in before crashing, or sitting with an unresponsive slideshow.
There's no reason for somebody not to host a server and play the OPEN WORLD multiplayer with a few friends and some bots in 2021 - Echelon supports dedicated servers, has a comprehensive set of console commands, and runs really well on modern systems.
The best example of russian game design from Saint Petersburg. Beautiful graphics, amazing gameplay and interesting story. Best to play on Hardcore difficullty with Joystick. Some missions are a bit harder than I expected.
Requires workarounds and patches made by the community to launch, stay away from it.
Beware
This game is terribly mantained. You'll probably need to edit a *.bat file in order to get it running in anything newer than Windows 7. It really show lack of care from the publishers that they don't properly maintain what otherwise is a cult game well worth playing.
(The reason for that being this: https://www.bluesnews.com/a/268/open-letter-to-bethesda-softworks )
The game runs in Linux, but you'll have to put on some effort editing the .bat file and making shure all the paths go to the right directories.
In its time this game was one of the funnest flight games around. Now it needs a patch to launch single player. Just leave your memories of this great game as it is, memories of the past.
Echelon
fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on,
good game.
Personal Suggested Purchase Price: $0.49 Or Less During Sale
Despite its age, Echelon has the potential to be an OK sort of game.
The graphics are better than I expected, and the introductory videos were interesting.
However, what really spoilt it for me were the controls for the aircraft. Whilst some of the game's controls could be changed, I found, when using the mouse to fly, that the up/down motions were inverted - and, as far as I could see, that situation can't be changed.
So, for example, whenever I wanted to fly up, I had to use the mouse in a manner that I would normally use to fly down in all other games. It was a real pain.
If I could have uninverted the way that the mouse controls worked then I would have been quite happy to play this game for quite a bit - but, as it stands, it is more annoying than enjoyable.

TLDR: Broken - Does not Launch (Win10-64bit)
To be honest I am not a huge fan of flight games like these to begin with, and having to fight to get such a primitive example of the genre to even start is not worth it to me. Even if it did run it would probably just turn me off of the genre even more, I would rather save my open mind for newer titles with better ease of use, nicer graphics and sound and nice physics, and well thought out missions. Removing for declutter
OOOOkay.... so it took a while to get this to actually run... That was very frustrating.. But.. Once you get it to work, this game is very fun. I like the strafe left/right thrusters on the fighters and I like the levels that actually can challenge you and require skille to complete.
I'm going to recommend this title, but with a stern finger wag at steam for releasing a title that requires customers to research how to get the game to actually launch...
Horrendous experience, slight rant warning !
Was looking forward to some Nostalgia, to the good games of old, ...
But i tried as good as everything to get it to run on my Win7 64bit system, but never succesfull.
I was even expecting that an oldy like this wouldn't run smoothly on newer systems
(tends to happen, not first time, not first game)
But after going through this for an extended period of time, i'm throwing in the towel.
I would love if one of these (or both) would occur in the future:
1) devs should rlly ****ing update their games properly, so that they would/could actually run on more modern systems without too much hastle, if they want to sell their games via a Modern & Digital retailer like Steam (or GoG or ....)
The current situation just screws over clients, and its purely negative bussiness.
2) Valve should freaking atleast put a big warning about optimisation or compatability issues. Activly check the games they wish to sell via Steam, and put appropriate warnings in place.
And yeah i hear you, they do that already, but to such a lesser degree its laughable, and definitely not activly (enough)
Way too many (older) games on Steam have issues with overlay, but Valve/Steam won't warn you about that, or that a game would, for a lot of players, not launch, or crash.
You only get that information from the other gamers that already smacked against that wall.
Getting so darn sick of companies only purely after money & power, abandoning decency whenever it suits em, and put a tiny freaking band-aid on gushing wounds as positive PR.
Now for the full experience, and the very near-future Refund ticket:
1) The game wouldn't launch, even after using admin + setting compatibility to win XP Service P3
2) after sifting through all guides and possible unofficial fixes and patches in the discussion section and online in general, I eventually got the game to launch to the main menu (sometimes), but that’s where it would crash again, or at other times I’d only have the option to "Exit Game".
Constantly trying to rewrite / patch the "GameLauncher.bat" file, to force it to work as every guide / patch tries to do, yields varying results and error messages. But I never got to see or get to actually start the game from its main menu (if I even got to the main menu)
3)I’ve checked the Product Website, which yields nothing but generic game info, the Developer website is actually the Product Website, and the (supposed) Publisher, via the “Customer Support Website” doesn’t even have the game in its list of (supported) games.
This doesen't work; tried every trick in the book (ran as admin, modifed GameLauncher.bat and everything!) and still didn't work
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I cannot get this to run even after trying all the fixes in the discussion forums and frankly can`t be bothered messing around with it anymore. (tried on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 PC`s).
The specs say it`ll work with windows 7 or 8.1....
Ummm sorry, but no it doesn`t.
Yes I tried setting the executables as admin, yes I ran the .bat file as admin & yes I tried every compatibility setting available on all the executables.
It might be a good game, but I can`t recommend it as I can`t run it, and from what I`ve seen in discussion threads, MANY people are having the same issues as I am and can`t run it either.
If you can accept having to (try to) fix the issues yourself, and spend a lot of time googling a solution then go for it, but be warned you might end up, (like me), wasting your money and time as no amount of tweaking or fiddling will get my copy to work..
If refunds had been available when I bought this I`d have taken that option, but sadly , they weren`t and I lost my money. The Games now in my "shit never to be played again" folder.
Where it belongs.
Looked good, buuut...
Game would not load at all. Checked discusion on hub. Tried patching game and all work arounds available on hub. No joy. Pity. Do not purchase game until, if ever, the devs get it working.
Faulty game launcher - but that's NOTHING! I was unable to play this game for over a decade! It's originally was made for Win 98 and XP patch not always worked. So setting BAT file launcher to admin permission is forgivable for me.
Game is FREAKING AMAZING, both it good and bad sense. There is some parts that are outdated more than the poop of the dinosaur, but the gameplay is still AWESOME!
Really complaining old good game for 1,3$ - you are insane! If you are futuristic sim-game fan - GRAB IT NOW!
It's like Battletech Aerospace fighter inspired gem!
An old and, for me, classic game, something of a classic example of old Russian game-design, in both good and bad senses of the term. The graphics have not aged particularly well, and the menus are sometimes a pain to navigate, but overall it remains a solid arcade-ish "action sim", with neat gameplay and a bit of originality, some of which has remained to this day even. There aren't a whole lot of these "futuristic VTOL gunship" sims on PC nowadays for some reason.
In regards to the Steam release: Well, the English localization is an interesting contrast to the Russian I remember. And the game did not launch for me the first time around. It took me the unimaginably difficult effort of going to the game's install directory and running the game's launch script as an administrator to set up the necessary registry and be able to play. (:P)
No, I didn't notice the line in the system requirements telling me to run the game as an administrator at first either.
Not needing a CD in the drive (which this tablet doesn't have anyway) is a definite plus over the times I played it in the past though. :P
The game still refuses to run.
Tried a couple of "solutions", none of them seem to work.
It's impossible to run this game.
This is an old game; I enjoyed it back in the day. I don't have any delusions about it supporting 5.1, or modern resolutions, or my xbox controller. However, it should be sold in such a state that it launches and is playable. This game can't be launched, and is not playable.
(note: there are some folks having luck with a 3rd-party patch)
I bought it for few cents, paid too much. This is ablsolute, pure, 100% non-working s***. I tested it on windows 10 x64, windows 7 x64 sp1 and windows xp sp3 (win7 and win xp via virtualbox). The only working part of it is the *.bat file, that has to be modified in order to idle cards.
Echelon is a classic flight sim similar to X-Wing, Tie-Fighter or Crimson Skies. It's fun, but often unreasonably difficult. This release, however, is broken. It runs, but requires a lot of work to get running. Buy at your own risk. Also, for some reason they replaced the old menu music with something awful.
There might be some nastalgia playing into my review of this game. It's recalls my favorite time in gaming, when titles like Terminal Velocity and Descent Dominated PC gaming. The tourtorial is a bit lacking so taking some time learning the controls from the options menu first will go a long way, the instant action option is a nice touch and multiplayer (with some system tweaking) is workable and entertaining at lans.
To address the Negative reviews:
There seems to be a trend of people assuming that this new wave of old games getting re-released on steam are similar to 'remakes' available on consoles. These are more like diving in the bargin bin at a local retailer. They aren't repolished with new fixes for modern machines, most will require a few extra steps to get running and this should be expected if you are buying anything before 2009. This one is no exception, luckily there aren't as many issues as with some other titles. I was able to get it up and running by right clicking on the gamelauncher.bat in the install folder and running as administrator. After running it once this way it launches fine from steam. Just so you don't think I have some odd setup that might be old enough to be compatible:
i7 3770k
16 gigs of ddr3
Geforce 780
Win7 x64
240gig SSD
