Best WWII flight sim if you can get past the older graphics

Classic Second World War flight sim with an amazing modding community keeping it alive to this day. Absolute cinema.

This was my first proper flight simulator after Microsoft combat flight simulator 2 and 3 and this definately surpasses those two titles. The different campaigns and choice of air forces is brilliant and has provided me with many happy hours of flying.
compared with Battle of Stalingrad the graphics are lacking somewhat thats because of its age where it beats BOS is it allows you to fast forward to waypoints in the mission, this means that you dont have to fly for 20+ minutes before you get to the action which I prefer. This game also has an excellent community around it with a wealth of knowledge and multiplayer game access availiability. My favourite game by far

I played this game for the first time upon its release when my dad picked up this, and pacific fighters at a local best buy. I remember the exact moment this game was purchased by my father and the row of which it was picked up on. For you younger folks out there, you used to have to buy these games and install them using a collection of CD's that you would then put in the computer, nowadays computers don't even have a slot for a CD player. And before this, most if not everything was put in using floppy disks.

with all of this being said this game provides a certain amount of nostalgia for me, and every pixel represented within this masterpiece takes me back to a simpler time.

The overwhelming amount of mods put into this game on the SAS forum and other IL2 forums contain more and more additions to the game making it even better than it was straight out of the box. This being an exclusive title to add to your simulator collection. This simulation has infinite replay ability and often times puts you in pretty difficult situation, as the AI are smart enough to dogfight you and give you a run for your money. They even comprehend the use of drag and bag tactics, where you will pick a target, follow him, and then he will run to a friend which will then begin to pursue you.

The AI also has a pretty insane accuracy rating and will most of the time make mince meat of your fighter, This within bomber formations as well makes your approaches more difficult, and makes you have to think and use legitimate tactics to defeat your enemy, campaign or not.

The game has some funny features about it though. For instance, I was playing a mission that was based on a scramble against a japanese airfield assault. The problem is, I was flying a P40 somewhere in indonesia and I was being attacked by that large force with only me and another AI pilot. With having no airspeed from taking off and having no chance to climb to get to a proper altitude, the enemy aircraft that swarmed made quick work of both of us, leading to a mission failure and a complete loss of my airframe. Such things occur and the game becomes extremely difficult, however entertaining as that is probably very realistic to what would actually occur. You can't be the super soldier everywhere.

EDIT: Modpacks like Ypack, BAT, and VPModpack add substantial detail to the game, This combined with campaigns on the SAS/Mission4today forums are amazing and worth all of your time, and its all free!
It really captures the world war II aesthetic with huge maps with long transits to each individual objective. Once I was in a Beaufighter, and had to fly all the way there in a formation and then once there had to strafe a German airfield. The mission was historically accurate and only rudimentary AAA was set up, Still, as we were strafing the airfield and the airplanes, once I got close I could literally see people running around trying to crew airplanes or save their lives from the incoming threat. Absolutely crazy experiences with this game, and everyone should give it a shot.

Very good but would have loved a flyable B17 and Lancaster

I have been playing this game since its inception. Forgotton Battles, Pacific Fighters, Ace Expansion, Pe-2. Back in the Days of Hyper-lobby. This will always be the game that set the standard for future flight sims. Way ahead of its time when UBI first released it. My favorite game ever.

excellent dogfight simulators. i know it got no good graphics (its from 2006), but the experience playing it is miles better

its an older flight sim but still holds up very well, the low price point makes this an easy recommendation to any flight sim enjoyers

Though not as "shiny" as the more modern titles in the series this is still a lot of fun. Very grateful for the ability to speed up time for those long bomber flights and for the inclusion of a few of the early jets.

Game is great, but of course has outdated things (It's almost 19 years old as I'm writing this). The worst thing is I'd say crashes and performance issues on vanilla, I'm still trying to fix them. Having a great run only to crash just before landing has really made me feel mad but oh well. The modding scene is pretty huge, and overall the freedom this game gives is immaculate. It's the fraction of the price what the new IL2 is (considering DLC's) and I'd say is a great entry for those with low-end pc's. A flight joystick is a must I'd say but you don't need anything fancy. If you can get the game running smoothly, I'd say it's a pretty worthy investment.

Do you like war thunder but hate the grinding? Escape the snail and this is the game for you. With having mod content added from a third party website it opens up a lot of variety of options for this game. Whats even great that there is a custom editor mode for a campgain so with some knowledge it can be a like sandbox game, plus some MAPs are bigger than the DCS slop. I'd recommend 10/10 despite the game from 2007.

This is probably the highest quality simulation for its price point. Maddox uses community drive to keep their simulation at a near 1:1 historical experience. My first dynamic campaign is Stuka dive bombing Leningrad, as a long time history enthusiast, i was ecstatic when i learned about the Stukas automatic bomb release and recovery feature. So simple a child could use it, with little to no training. That's only one aircraft, every aircraft gets this treatment. Manuals and operation guides of the time are very valuable when playing this sim. I strongly recommend to anyone that calls themselves a history buff.

If you buy this game, it gives you immediate access to IL-2 BAT mod from the SAS website, which gives you like well over 2 thousand aircraft across decades of aviation history, and hundreds of maps plus so many other things including incredible campaigns. Somehow after 20 years it is still actively updated.
