Nice game with great tactical scenarios. I also like the dark atmosphere.
Unfortunately this game is broken and the AI get stuck spinning around trying to find the closest target. But don't let that dissuade you from Hard West 2 as this was a fantastic title.
Xcomlike in the old west with monsters and other spooky shenanigans. The DLC campaign even has a monster building from component parts you find which is pretty rad. It's quite solid entry in the genre with its own relatively unique setting and it goes for a pair of bucks on sales so... I recommend it if you like what you read so far.
Nope!
Strategy/roguelite+Xcomlite with a well done story that drives the game forward. The combat isn't the most advanced on normal, nor is the strategy part extremely fleshed-out - but the sum of all the parts comes off really well.
If Supernatural was a spaghetti western, it would probably be something like this. A pretty chill and entertaining game with janky RNG shooting mechanics. Not too challenging but has many difficulty settings to make it interesting.
Got it for cheap and easily worth my time. The map play is rudimentary, silly and not very intuitive, but easy to take advantage of. The combat makes me feel like a kid playing cowboys in the backyard. The cards in this game are pretty fun.
There does seem to be the occasional occurrence of game breaking bugs that prevent you from progressing, requiring restarting the current mission from the beginning, possibly related to resolutions over 1080p and/or frame rate over 60. Only when I changed both these settings would the game reload properly from the effected occurrence. Even so, it will cause you to be locked out of bounds and unable to progress.
Also, characters glitching out may be related to v-sync not being enabled It played fine for me with these settings
There's also a mod on Nexus to avoid an apparent bug on the last mission.
too clunky with command inputs very hard to navigate stairs are a nightmare. love the art style and story but game mechanic is broken.
A very well thought and clever tactical game in wild west with supernatural elements. One could say what more interesting theme in a video game a person can ask.
Boring.
I am STUNNED at all the negative reviews. I'm not talking about people who might have experienced game breaking bugs, which I haven't personally. In fact, I haven't encountered a single noticeable bug!
But reading many of them referring to this game constantly as "XCOM clone" just proves how ignorant these people are, and of what mindset they come to write a negative review for a game that does not deserve it! Hard West stands on its on solid feet as an immersive exciting turn-based game.
In my view, especially with the edition of the Scars of Freedom DLC, Hard West is a masterpiece! And it is very enjoyable!
I like the idea of this game but I just cant get into it, the mining was confusing but mainly I find it too hard to see and move around the map when fighting, however I got the sequel and its a lot of fun.
Summary: A pretty solid tactics game with a very interesting way of handling RNG. Don't be fooled by the hit chances, you can always know when you are going to get hit in this game. Had some serious stuttering and lag all the time, probably a memory or engine leak in this game. A little buggy. Story is okay, setting is cool. Music is excellent. I would only get this on sale, and luckily it goes on sale pretty cheap. If you are a tactics lover, you should get it regardless.
The luck system is a very interesting way of handling hit chance in this game. Basically, you have a luck stat, let's say it's 100. Every time you shoot at someone - or someone shoots at you - their hit chance is reduced from your luck stat, and they miss. If their hit chance is HIGHER than the luck you have left, the attack with always hit, regardless of what the hit chance of the shot actually says. That means that the hit chance is kind of like a lie, or at least it can be very misleading and weird to get used to at first. This also means that the game basically boils down to Luck Stat management ENTIRELY. This is both good and bad. One, it makes the game have very little actual RNG. The bad is that once you figure this out, the game is kind of just that over and over again.
It has a very common scenario I want to mention too, which I call the Luck Loop. This is tied to the level design. The levels are usually somewhat small and consist of LOTS of very enclosed, small spaces. Enemies get an opportunity shot on you for free if you get too close (with 100% hit chance so I don't think it ever misses). Because of this, there are lots of areas in the game where there's not really any good way to flank, and what this ends up is that you keep shooting really low hit chance shots at each other over and over until their luck is low, and then you hit them for like... 1 damage because they're in full cover. This can really be a grind sometimes but it's also the safest way to play.
Another big downside is the lack of Fog of War. The reason this is a downside is because you can't really tell when an enemy is out of sight or not. A lot of levels you will have a guy run in from what seems really close, but your units have a low Sight stat so they didn't see. This can feel really unfair because there's no line or anything to show you just how far your guys can see. I played the game on Hard and a lot of enemies flanking you will just kill you in a single shot. This is instant game over most of the time and you have to restart the level from the beginning.
This is also a game that has a lot of "stealth" setup stages before missions start and it's just laughable. Enemies will have a vision cone of like 5 feet and you just put yourself in these silly scenarios where it doesn't feel like sneaking at all. It's also a bit annoying because you only have ONE action in Setup Stage. So it takes forever, and then if you happen to die, get ready to repeat all of it again.
The difficulty is actually not that bad except for a couple missions which are just BRUTAL.
The last bad thing I want to mention is the performance. I dunno what it is, my machine is top-end, but as I play the game, the more and more it starts to chug. I think it has a memory leak. Sometimes you press "I" to bring up the character inventory and it just freezes for like 5 seconds. Then in fights sometimes everyone shoots the game freezes. I would stutter even on the overworld all the time. It gets really really bad, but I can't tell if it's like that for everyone. But it's something to consider if you buy the game.
Anyway, the story is okay, and I like the story tying into the re-use of certain levels, it made it feel less cheap. The music was excellent and has a great mix of horror/western vibes to it. The graphics are pretty good, and I think the shots and sounds make it feel really good, which a lot of tactics games miss. The scenario layout itself is a little strange, since you keep "restarting" from scratch with new people, even though a couple items will carry over to shops.
It is a much older game and I am just playing it now. So far to be honest I just want to get through it and try the second part. It's an ok game but I wouldn't say its worth $20. At best maybe $10 - $12 but def not anything over $15. It's mostly text base and I am not huge into that. so I can say to give it a try around the price points I believe may be worth it.
rdr 2 with FPS update
A promising looking modern XCOM clone that glitches out enough to be unplayable. It's preposterous how during a short playtime I encountered a bug that prevents the AI from finishing its turn, because the npc actors get stuck on obstacles thus creating an endless loop. How is this even possible in a grid-based game? Couldn't it simply be fixed by completely disabling some collision mechanic?
The game is a little buggy, but I enjoy the idea of Wild West Xcom. Not sure why so many people have been so negative recently, for the $2 I spent it's a decent game.
Trash. Don't bother
bad bug, you get stuck in a loop that you cant get out of ( movement ) very frustrating , have to restart

“We will return this territory, and build the Great Khazaria – the jewish state –on these fertile lands the same way as, 50 years ago, we created israel.”
-mashiach, menachem mendel schneerson, circa 1994.
The rebbe and living-mashiach of chabad-mafia was the leader of the jewish people from 1951-1994; he is considered to be the most influential jewish figure in the past centuries.
schneerson considered more than Jerusalem and greater-israel as an ancestral homeland; the rebbe had a strong-affinity with his ashkenazi roots as he was born in Ukraine in 1902.
he wished to return to this 'promised land' to act as the global-capital for "the kingdom of jews."
"First of all, we will divide the Slavic nations into small countries with weak and severed connections. For this, we will use our old method: divide and conquer.
We will try to pit these countries against each other, and suck them into civil-wars for the sake of mutual destruction.
The Ukrainians would think that they are fighting against the expansionist Russia and struggling for their independence. They will think that they have finally-gained their freedom, while they become fully-subdued by us (jews).
The same will be thought by Russians, as though they defend their national-interests to return their lands, “illegally” taken away from them, and so on."

"This may be the most important post you’ll ever read because it provides a simple explanation about why our world is being destroyed, by design.
I’m not antisem itic nor a N azi. I’m simply a former hacker with great analytical skills who understands what’s happening in the world.
At the end of this post I will quote from a world domination plan. You will recognize the truth immediately because that’s what’s currently happening in the world. Today’s reality suggests that this plan is real.
When you do your own research you will learn that the origin of this plan was discredited and that the alleged creators have nothing to do with it. But who was the person providing the key evidence?
It was allen dulles. The man who raised money from US industrialists to fund Ad olf Hi tler, his Na zi party and his war. The man who later became the director of the CIA during Kennedy and the head of The Warren Commission that investigated the Kennedy Incident. Why would anybody believe a man with such a questionable character?
The protocols of the elders of zion have unquestionably borrowed ideas from several authors but you can say that about most important writings throughout history. It was called a fabrication and is one of the first uses of the term ‘conspiracy theory’.
Why do zionists have a massive over-representation in the media, politics, banking, and world-affairs? How did such a small community get to dominate all the centers of power and information?
Why can isreal ignore UN resolutions, international-law, and commit a genocide in Ga za, to standing ovations in the US Congress? Why is isreal acting like it is above the law seemingly without any fear of consequences.
Read some of the alleged zi onist world domination plan below and compare it with reality. Is all of this just a coincidence?
“Our power will be more invincible than any other, because it will remain invisible until the moment when it has gained such strength that no cunning can any longer undermine it.”
“We shall absolutely control the media, so that not a single announcement will ever reach the public without our control. In this way we shall have a sure triumph over our opponents, for without the media, they are helpless.”
“We will distract the brainless heads with vain conceptions, fantastic theories, rotten amusement, games, and filthy passions, so that they will be unable to use what intellect they have. They will never suspect that they have been stage managed by us.”
“We shall establish huge monopolies, so that all will go to ruin when the political smash-up comes. We must, at all cost, deprive them of their lands, we must lower wages, and raise the prices of all necessities of life.”
“We shall create an economic crisis, which will stop dealings in all exchanges and bring industry to a standstill. We shall throw onto the streets whole mobs of workers, simultaneously, all over the world, who will rush to loot property and delight to shed blood.”
“In our government, besides ourselves, there must only be the mass of enslaved people, a few billionaires devoted entirely to us, police, and soldiers. To do this we must create chaos and hostilities, and we must use all deceit, treachery and falseness, possible. Our greatest weapon is the media.”
“We shall establish one king over all of earth who will annihilate all causes of discord, such as borders, nationalities, religion, state debts, etc., and get peace and quiet which cannot be secured in any other way. To attain our ends we must foment trouble in all countries, utterly exhaust all of humanity with hatred, struggle, envies, torture, starvation, and diseases, so that the people will be forced to take refuge in our complete sovereignty.”
“Our master card has been, is, and shall be, the destruction of all privileges, on the ruins of which we shall set up our absolute autocracy.”

""How the tables have turned in the past decade. If you were involved at the inception of the culture war around a decade ago then you probably remember an abrupt and distinct change in popular media from 2015 to 2016. There was a surge of far-left and feminist propaganda in movies, television, commercials and even video games that was highly aggressive, perhaps even militant. Some people spoke out at the time and questioned the motives behind the trend, only to be smacked down by angry mobs of activists and corporate journalists with accusations of “conspiracy theory” and “bigotry.”"...
boring and repetitive
Original and creative take on the Weird West genre.
The most important thing to know: This isn't XCOM despite the press saying so based on game featuring turn based combat. This isn't role playing game either. There are different main characters in different chapters of game.
Game has several scenarios, most of them with different main character. Over course of scenario there are characters that can be recruited to main characters crew called posse in game.
Turn based tactical combat is based on two action points system similar to XCOM but otherwise similarity is superficial.
Some characters can use certain objects to skim bullets to shoot enemies they have no line of sight. I'm not sure if height differences (shooting from upper floor down to courtyard for example) really matter for accuracy There are no dynamical objects on maps. No hay bales that could be ignited, oil lamps to set buildings on fire, explosive powder barres or anything like that, nada, nothing. Maps for scenarios are static, no random tactical missions, no base management.
There is what on surface looks like a strategy layer in XCOM on scenarios main (world) map, but outside of shopping ways to solve scenarios presented in dialogue box, you choose option A, or B and sometimes C, there's not much to in terms of strategy as outcome for many of these events can only be discovered via trial and error.
So if you are looking for XCOM-like (whatever that is) this isn't probably for you.
That said, I enjoyed learning about Weird West genre. Niche of niches, which I had very vague understanding before playing Weird West. Writing is quite good, but overall scenarios are very dark. Occult themes may turn some players off too. I completed all main game scenarios and also Scars of Freedom DCL scenario, which is Weird West science fiction scenario.
Soundtrack is really good and well produced and really shines on high end audio system. Main scenario voice acting is where it needs to be in both of quality and quantity, but Scars of Freedom DCL doesn't have same production values.
I can't either recommend or not recommend this game. I got so interested about Weird West that I bought the sequel but that is based rather that I like creative take on things, like mashing up several genres what Weird West genre is about rather than game play mechanics. While I'm a fan of turn based tactics, this game is very basic on that feature and even then manages to make that more convoluted than necessary.
not fun to play
Currently there is a glitch that sometimes a person (occasionally happens to the enemy also but not nearly as often as to your characters) that they wont finish moving into the last square. They just shift back and forth in the square and there is no way around it. I tried quick saving but that doesn't work in mission and the only way to get out of that loop is to restart or exit to menu (which is just like restarting due to the game not saving in the middle of a mission and you cant quick save).
Due to this I have been stuck on the last mission for Cassandra for four or five tries now.
4/10. Sat in my library for ages and finally played it. Great presentation, all the characters are wretched villains or outright demons, the campaign is dark and macabre.
Unfortunately it's a nearly 10 year old stale X-com clone (and combat-wise one of the weakest clones), I forced myself to finish the main game to see the story end but went limp on the DLC, it's all so tiresome
The combat is very entertaining, the best part imo. Couldn't really get into the story myself but it feels like there isn't really much differentiation between scenarios. It kinda felt like I was just going through the motions when navigating the map. click here, click here, click here, battle, repeat. The game reached a point of no further movement during my run on the last scenario for the girl. With nothing fixing movement and after trying everything other than starting over, i'll call it.
Pretty ok game and though the story broke, I did have some fun. Interesting setting but the story and characters were all over the place a little hard to keep interest. Hard to get past the personal shelf moment. 4/10
An interesting and different take on the Old West. Several campaigns with different base mechanics add variety and the campaigns are liberally sprinkled with supernatural elements.
Frickin' zombie outlaw revenge FTW.
Very original. Good story. Nice charecters. My only complain is that it's too short.
Supernatural Old-West X-Com. The computer cheats just as much here, but if you are a fan of that style there's a lot of fun to be had here.
Doesn't work with controller.
Amazing game both the combat and storytelling are great.
If the game is freezing temporarily sometimes try forcing -d3d9 through Steam launch options (type -force -d3d9 in Hard West -> Properties -> Launch Options).
not that good
Played partway into the second campaign but uninstalled due to frustration with far-too-common infinity loops of characters trying to settle into a position. Seemed fun up until that became too irritating.
A lot of annoying bugs that should have been fixed in testing.
I like the game overall, but there is a bug that cannot developer fix in as good as dead, that the player may not be proceed, it's kind make me sick because I have 75% progress in that scenario but should be cancelled and can't finish scenario, but overall the experience is unique and stressing for me at the same time
Decent old school turn based shooter. It forces you to play different "campaigns" so you don't have to get bogged way to far down with min / max. Can't wait to play the second one.

This is a solid Turn-based Strategy game with an intriguing premise. I found it to be a rather puzzling endeavor sometimes.
Pros: The base game is divided into chapters and you play different characters in each chapter - this is a pro AND a con.
There's a decent variety of guns and consumables to use.
The writing and voice-over are very atmospheric but a bit thin in places.
The cards/hands system is a lot of fun. You can spend a good amount of time weighing how to distribute your cards to best effect.
The combat mechanics are fairly basic but offer some neat tricks, such as ricochets to hit a person out of direct sight.
Combat is just challenging enough to make you pay attention, and when you get a handle on the different weapons, powers, and consumables available, it gets to be more about creativity than action.
Cons: The interface isn't super-intuitive and some neat things that would have helped early on only became clear to me mid-game.
Some neat mechanics like Hunger (gotta feed yer cowpokes) appear for a chapter and then disappear.
The game makes it hard to play as a "good guy" all the way through. Ugly choices have to be made. This took me out of my comfort zone, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, so I'd say both pro and con here.
If you're looking for a TBS game with an unusual milieu and atmosphere, this is worth a buy, especially if it's on a good sale.

As a fan of XCom & turn based strategy games, I, for some reason, just couldn't get into Hard West. After 5 hours of play, I gave up, sadly.
I have played many turn based combat action adventure games like Hard West and I can honestly say this is now one of my favorites of its genre. This game starts so typical, and through world building and ever changing mini mechanics, twists and player choice - becomes of symphony of fun. I cannot wait to crack in to Hard West 2 if it is anything like its predecessor. This game has such re-play ability (which I think is a high honor among games.) This has aged well and the graphics are better than some modern top down isometrics.
ALSO
Get the DLC Scars of Freedom. After a lovely main campaign, I think I appreciated the story and macabre of the DLC even more.
Interesting story line that slowly brings various threads together as you progress. Fun turn based combat with a creative use of "luck" as a combat resource. Has a very strong "Deadlands TTRPG" feel to it, which I loved.
I really enjoyed the game until it froze. and then froze again. and then AGAIN. couldn't even make it to the end of the second mission, every single time, an enemy would get stuck after moving and would just blur back and forwards without ever ending their turn. had a read around to find that this has basically been an issue since launch, the devs simply don't care and won't fix it. so yeah, fix this game or I won't buy your next one.
