But with the mob on his back, the Great Depression on the horizon, and the Sunshine State’s idyllic waterfront only a hurricane away from total devastation, Alfie finds much more than he bargained for.
Based on actual events and featuring real life locations and historical figures, you must guide Alfie on his journey to reach the top of the real estate game as he deals with shady salesmen, cutthroat bootleggers, corrupt politicians, and much more, all while swept up in the events surrounding the inception of Coral Gables, The City Beautiful.

I didn't know what to expect, but I wasn't disappointed. A period point and click set in early to mid 20th century America, A Golden Wake is a well crafted and brilliantly voice acted game. The puzzles are challenging enough to keep interest but not so bewildering as to restrict the flow of gameplay. The setting is conveyed accurately with a respect for detail without exagerated flair, adding to the legitimate feel of the world and characters, all of whom are written with a sense of reality. That's not to say that the game is boring or dull. There's plenty of laughs and action to be had without detracting from the more serious aspects of a period plot. All in all, a good play.
In my consideration "Lamplight city" is much better than "A Golden Wake", but this game is lovely too. It reminds classical quests of 90's and has it's own unique atmosphere, so rare nowadays.
Don't take this as a negative review, as there is no Meh, mid, or neutral choice, but compared to many of the new wave of classic point and clicks this one didn't grab me.
Competent, and will give something to dedicated adventure game fans, but not essential.
A great short original adventure game with cool art, interesting situations, no frustrating puzzles and kick ass music.
omg best coming of age game I've ever encountered.
I really enjoyed playing through this game! It's got a great story that keeps you interested and good voice acting and music as well. I am playing Lamplight City now and enjoying it also.
Let me start by saying the trailer doesn't do it justice. It's all over the place, and not very representative of the story.
A lot of people in the reviews speak of the stock market and how it's a boring setting, but that's only 2-3% of the story and honestly you don't have the time to get bored by it.
Those reviews made me afraid the game would be no good, and to be fair, I didn't think I'd care about the 1920's.
Yet, despite that initial apprehension, I loved the game. Fact is, the 1920's were a 100 years ago, and whilst we often see stories that take place during the world wars, we almost never see a story that takes place entirely between them.
See, I found that the story isn't so much that of your character, but rather the story of Coral Gable, this project city that you help develop. Your actions give result to, or are the result of local historical events, and whilst Alfie is a salesman, what you sell is a dream! I think your enjoyment of the game will depend on wether you're able to buy into Coral Gable's dream or not. The musics are interesting, lovely for the most part, special mentions to Doc Dammers's theme and the Cuba tracks.
Yikes. Just, yikes. I've said before I'll always give a Wadjet Eye project a chance, even if it's widely panned or conceptually dumb, but A Golden Wake is the first game published by them that I would recommend you absolutely stay away from.
A Golden Wake is just pretty bad. It reeks of edu-tainment, which normally I'm not against. I think games in general have a huge and largely untapped potential for being informative in a more effective way than books or documentaries can be, but this is a really bad example. First off, the historical setting is just really dull. 1920s America doesn't really interest me, but it's also set in Florida, so it's somehow even more boring than I expected. What's worse, rather than playing through the life of a historical figure, you're instead relegated to inhabiting the role of what may be the most boring point & click protagonist I've ever borne witness to. Alfie Banks is a a real estate agent (ew) who's entire motivation is "Eh, Miami sounds nice enough, guess I'll move there and just do whatever the first businessman I meet tells me to do" Being a fictional agent in a historical setting, he lacks any amount of agency or influence over the events of the narrative, instead he spends the entire game running around doing inconsequential errands then whinging about them. Blergh.
Worse than the narrative perhaps is the gameplay itself. The puzzles here are fucking dire. Patronisingly simple, most of them take the form of uninspired fetch quests across the boring, ugly world, persuading NPCs to do whatever you want through babby's first LA Noire knock-off. All this and Alfie can only move at a top speed of 4mph led me to just standing up from my PC halfway through because I was so damn bored.
I did eventually come back and finish the game, but I kind of wish I hadn't. There are infinitely better, smarter, prettier and more interesting point & click games out there, so for the love of god, do not bother with A Golden Wake.
Yes.
