Bloons TD 5 is the Steam version of the fifth installment in the Bloons Tower Defense series (which is a spin-off of the Bloons puzzle game series). In these games, you select a map and have to use a set amount of cash you earn per wave to place or upgrade various types of attacking monkeys and other units around a path. The monkeys then have to pop floating balloons (the "Bloons" from the series title) before the balloons can make it to the other end of the path. If too many balloons make it to the end of the path, you run out of lives and lose. If you manage to complete all of the waves in a certain level without letting too many balloons get by, you win. Bloons TD 5 introduces new maps, monkeys, and features to the series.
I have a long history with Bloons Tower Defense. The original game in the series was my go-to game to play on school computers because it used to be hosted on websites that schools didn't know to block (like Cool Math Games). I spent hours playing that game while hiding my computer screen from teachers. So, when I saw Bloons TD 5 on Steam, it brought back so many memories. I hadn't played much of the second, third, or fourth games in the series, but I heard good things about Bloons TD 5 and wanted to try it out.
This game is certainly different from the original Bloons Tower Defense experience. Yes, the core concept of the gameplay is still the same, but it's like the genre itself changed from a turn-based strategy game to a pseudo-RPG/idle game. Allow me to explain. Besides the in-game cash that's used to purchase and upgrade monkeys in a map, there's also "monkey money" and "tokens". These other currencies are earned from completing maps, and they can be used to buy several different enhancements for making the game easier. I'll just refer to these enhancements as "perks" for the rest of this review to simplify things. Due to the fact that these perks can drastically affect the difficulty of the game, you'll eventually find yourself grinding maps to farm monkey money and tokens for buying all of the perks. The perks eventually end up making the game so easy that it feels like an idle game. In fact, there's a setting you can turn on which lets the waves start themselves, so you can literally turn it into a real idle game. Now, I have no problem with grinding in video games - I'm a huge turn-based RPG fan. However, grinding just doesn't feel like it belongs in a Bloons Tower Defense game. I recently went back and played the original game in the series again (thanks to the free Ninja Kiwi Archive also available on Steam), and the difference is night and day. Yes, I know I could just turn off the perks or not even buy them, but the problem there is that the game doesn't reward you for playing that way. It's not like there's a secret medal or achievement you can get for beating a map without using perks, and I'm not the kind of gamer who gets satisfaction out of challenging myself if there's no in-game benefit. They could have gone with a more strategy-oriented approach with this game, but they unfortunately didn't.
That being said, I've still sunk a lot of hours into this game. As I mentioned, the core gameplay is still good old Bloons Tower Defense. The idle aspect even became fun for a bit as I played the game while multitasking. I'm on the fence about this game, but I recommend it only if you're a hardcore fan of the series. You should probably play all of the Bloons Tower Defense games in the Ninja Kiwi Archive (or your website of choice) before deciding to buy this one.
Yogi's Rating: 3 out of 5 pic-a-nic baskets
not as balanced as btd 6 but who cares it's great.
amazing game reccomended :)
scratches my brain more than 6 tbh
these old flash games made me fail a spelling test in 3rd year
10/10!
as an individual with a foot fetish, i really enjoyed this game
:)
shoutout to that one guy who keeps adding maps for this clearly obsolete game
Fun game with good design, but with micro-transaction.
Though BTD6 is a lot better, this game is part of the best tower defense saga out there.
im gonna have 500 hours in the game
Great tower defense. It is easy to learn but hard to master.
Sadly it has the problem of getting repetitive on the long run.
Despite being a great and entertaining game, you should get BTD6. It completely replaces BTD5 in my opinion
very fun tower defense game
Better than BTD6 worse soundtrack than BTD4
This Is A Good Game
great game to play
Possibly the greatest time waster in the history of mankind. Anyone who's played for hours on their phone or the school library's computers knows what I'm talking about. Even though it's less balanced, has less content, and is mostly overshadowed by Bloons TD6, coming back for a few rounds every once in a while is always a great time. RIP Bloonchipper.
a simpler, but not worse version of btd6
while btd6 improves on this game in every possible way, btd5 is still a charming game that is equally addictive compared to btd6
worth checking out if you're beginning to get bored of btd6, or a newcomer to the franchise
im not actually a big fan of btd5, i prefer battles 1 back when that wasnt ass when it comes to the btd5 franchise, but its not bad
yes, btd5 franchise, it had spinoffs so btd5 is sorta its own franchise like how persona 5 is its own franchise within the persona franchise which itself is a spinoff
Still good fun to play even in the year 2025
While this is a phenomenal Tower Defense game, Your money is better spent on the sixth game, which is simply a better game in nearly every respect.
I like the way that you can get a max ammo from dog rounds. Makes it really worth playing!
randomly deleted 70 hours of progress from me, not super cool!
didnt uninstall the game or get a new pc or anything, it was just gone
Like TD6, with less options for upgrades for your towers. I think it actually makes it harder, to be honest. Fun game tho. Definitely recommended.
Haha funni monkeri poppergin ballons
Is a fun tower defence game with lots of maps and a good selection of towers to choose from. This is a better version of the flash/browser games from back in the day and is my current favourite game in the series. Like the monkeys popping bloons theme and has a good variety of strategies to try out with the different towers.
Vary fun game with dozens of hours of content.
What can I say, in the last few months I've played this game more than any sane person ever could. And through it all, the moments of both glory and abject failure, I can honestly say I've found a new appreciation for BTD5 as a whole. There is nearly an endless amount of challenge and entertainment packed into this simple game, and as much as BTD6 managed to improve, the 5th game isn't worth forgetting.
Bloonchipper proved me wrong, even after playing BTD6 as my first Bloons game. Anyways, better late than never.
Long time Bloons player here, After intially playing the intial flash games, BTD5 is just a straight up ultimate edition of all those with lots of maps and lots of content, when i mean lots, i mean lots and lots of maps with different modes.
Like:
Map variety
Towers
Random & Special Missions
Dislike:
May feel monotonous if trying to 100% the game and the in game currency, once everything is purchased is of little use apart from reviving a lost game.
Highly recommended for Tower Defense games fans. Have a popstatic time!
Monkey has bigger banana than me
Miniclip introduced me to this game, my money led me to enjoying it again.
Monkey game but 5 :0 But yeah, the bloonchipper is in here and it's still a fun-ass game
It's a retro tower defense game, nothing not to love except for a few exploits and missions. I'm astonished they still give this game updates. Check in every few months, there should be something new.
getting all upgrades and stuff is grindy but the gamepley is a 9/10
very good game. lots of fun but also has some complexity to it which aids in the games longevity. the only complaint i have is that the leveling up takes a while making it difficult for more casual players to enjoy the full game. but that is a small complaint.
lost all my progress due to computer crash, but thats a great game, and a tip for y'all:USE THE FUCKING CLOUD SAVE, don't be dumb like me. (=
good game, but can't sex the monkeys :(
monkey pop balloon, dopamine activated
This game did not disappoint. The first game from NK that I've ever played was btd battles, and this game is very similar. You also have the same freedom to choose the difficulty and map, just like btd 6. The graphics were super nostalgic and I love that they still update this game. NK, you are my favorite company of video games, especially because your slogan is more awesomer. Thank you so much for everything you have done for the boons community.
My personal favourite bloons game. BTD Battles is also very good. Still fun to play after so many years
> monkey apprentice
> banana farms
> save for sun god
> win
10/10
from even my first hours, btd5 is much better (hunderds of hours of experience on btd6 (epic games and mobile sorry)
TW: YAPPING
btd6:
- costs more to play
- relies on internet to do literally anything
- has mr beast collab
- no NAPSFRILLS
- ugly 3d monkeys
btd5:
- invented NAPSFRILLS
- chad soundtrack
- classic btd skins
- tokens and monkey money used instead of real money
- more maps
- more to do after black bordering maps (mastery mode)
- lets you play offline
- is still frequently updated after 13 years
- silly 2d art style
- cooler maps
- cheaper to buy on steam and everywhere else
- 2x cash is bought with monkey money
- bloonchipper
btd5 is just the best one
absolute classic. everyone has either played this, or the spinoff bloons games (btd battles and bmc). i prefer it more than btd 6 tbh, it's that good
I missed playing this game on my school laptop in class, and couldnt find it anywhere on the web to play for free at school, and went for years without this game. After i found it on steam, i knew i had to buy it when i could afford it. so when i could afford it, bought it again, played it, and fell in love with it all over again.
Playing this in grade 4 and 5 on an elementary school desktop will forever cement this game as one of my favorite games off all time. The sheer bliss of recesses featuring monkeys and balloons will never be forgotten. Thank you NinjaKiwi.
