Finding yourself in mysterious forests you must unfurl a spiritual tale of solace before the unending winter consumes all. There a spirit guide will help you learn the skills of survival and the secrets of the wilds: why you awakened there, their purpose, and how to finally be free from its clutches and malevolent apparitions.
The gameplay focuses on exploration and survival of the randomised wilds. Gathering resources to build gear and sustain yourself, learning new skills and the intertwining interactions between the various areas, seasons, and weather. The game includes 40+ areas to discover and 225+ items, including food, resources, tools, clothes, gear and furniture.

I am only satisfied to be done, not to have played it. I managed to get all the achievements through sheer willpower because no guide was up to date and helpful at the same time, and the Wiki was no help to me either. I think the puzzles and game play is too vague once you're really diving into the story, and once you're on your fourth go around after dying, one can easily lose the will to go on because cut scenes are unskippable.
absolutely fantastic game, kept genuinely enraptured for weeks.
The recent update made this hidden gem much more accessible to players with a low tolerance for esoteric UI. This is a survival zen garden point and click adventure. It is great.
This game expects you to solve super vague puzzles that are really based on chance because the areas are constantly randomized and shuffled around. You're running around most of the time not knowing where you're supposed to go or what you're doing and even with a walk-through it's a frustrating experience.
I've had this on my wishlist for AGES. I finally picked it up and I have to say... I wasn't happy with it. The controls are super funky, and I couldn't get past that. The program itself it quite small. I prefer a more immersive experience. The controls are weird because they look like xbox buttons but have different letters (S, D, A), which prompted me to get out a controller and try using that. It worked... except rebinding. That does not work with a controller. Playing with mouse and keyboard was not something I would want to do with this game. I had a hard time figuring out what buttons I even needed to press. I tried S on the keyboard and that didn't work, so what button IS the special button? I tried B on the controller and that didn't work either. I was completely lost.
I don't recommend this game. The environments are beautiful and the mystery is intriguing, but...
For starters, the gameplay mechanics are counter intuitive. I kept dropping things instead of using them, and fumbling with things costs precious daytime. The days are too short to get anything done. When I played on normal difficulty, I had to spend entire days cutting down trees for firewood, or spending an entire day getting the materials to replace my axe when it inevitably broke from cutting down trees. Berries start out as a good food source, but the closer you get to winter, the less sustenance they provide. The recipes you learn appear to be randomized, so you might have to spend a whole day giving offerings in hopes that you'll get a good recipe, which is especially important for hunting. I switched to easy mode to see if I could concentrate more on the story line, but it didn't help anything beyond not needing to get firewood. I was hoping it would increase day length, which to me was really the most irritating factor, but it did not. I like a good challenge, but I don't think this is challenging in the right areas. I think I'd rather watch a playthrough or read the wiki instead. Purchase at your own risk I guess. The price is reasonable enough.
This game is my "No Apologies" Award game, which also serves as motivation to finally review it because I just love this game. The pixelated style captivated me, the story was just thought-provoking enough, the puzzles occassionally frustrate and yet I've played this game through over and over. It's imperfect, it's hard, it's confusing, and sometimes even downright unforgiving in its survival mechanics, the advancing of seasons, and the limits to how much you can do in a given day, but I straight up love this game. There's a definite satisfaction in having learned how everything works and being able to use that to my advantage and get a little better at the game each time. Now all I have to do is finish finding all the diary entries... unless the creator goes and updates the Achievements again, that is.
This game is a beautiful mystery. I don't know what's going on yet, but each new discovery makes me more intrigued to find out. The tutorial and early game guide you through the basic mechanics, but there's way more to this than it first seems on the surface. It's a little creepy, but kind of relaxing too.
My only complaint is the controls seem awkward to me. I think this would be more enjoyable with mouse control.
Echo of the Wilds is a very sedate experience. If you enjoy such games, it's well worth it.
Additionally, the developer fixed the bug I reported within hours. Judging by the discussions, the dev is very responsive and helpful.
The game itself is good, but it's crashed twice in the past day, and I've lost a LOT of progress both times. I want to play it, but I'm sick of the crashing. Writing this review 30 seconds after the second time, I was about 2 game days away from finishing it. Now I'm about 15 game days away from finishing it. Maybe have it auto save every day? Or two days? Just my thoughts.
I love this game so much. I think it has one of the best art in pixels that I've seen in a game. The sound effects are just perfect and really bring a lot to the atmosphere. Also, the writting is unique and funny to read. Too bad it is so scary that I can only play it sometimes because it terrifies me so much. >.< But if you like horror and survival games, this is just the thing for you!
This game was beautiful and amazing. Perfect balance of survival, crafting and puzzles, took me more than one playthrough to figure out and beat. Great Game
I really wanted to like this game, but I just can't. The pixel graphics are pretty and haunting, the music is nice, the elements of a good game are there, but the deal-breakers are too severe to make it overall enjoyable.
The game has a crafting system. What is the weak part of every game with a crafting system? Inventory management. This game starts you with 6, count 'em 6, inventory slots, and items don't stack. Also items you use to harvest other crafting items break, often before you can collect a single crafting material (it takes at least 2-3 pebbles to collect a rock to make an axe, for instance, or at least 2 thorny plants to chop down a sapling--pebbles and rocks are found in different maps by the way).
On top of that, you can only visit 2, possibly 3 locations per day. Fewer if the storyline decides to teleport you away from what you wanted to do, which it does a lot in the beginning. So you end up with this situation in which you have to either start over a few times or know exactly what you're doing, and run around between locations with exactly the right inventory items, to make your harvesting tools, to keep from starving or freezing to death in the beginning.
Even then, resource management with a tiny inventory and breakable items continues to be the bulk of what you spend your time doing. People are saying they beat the game after 70-100 in-game days, and it's because you can barely do any game elements beyond basic survival, due to the limited inventory and limited exploration time available.
There was a pleasant, fun, short-ish game in here somewhere, that got buried in totally tedious, punishing, and un-fun repetition. If you can buy it for a dollar, play for an hour or 2, not expecting anything beyond seeing some weird things and dying and giving up.
Had a bug happen.
Posted to the forums.
Two hours later developer replies that he fixed it and it should be fine now.
Two. Hours. Dev literally dropped whatever he was doing to fix the bug immediately. That's what I can call dedication!
The game itself is beautiful and unique. Definitely different from any other survival games I've played, the dialogue and text in general are beautifully written and it's very challenging! I still haven't managed to finish it and I'm loving every minute of the challenge.
Definitely recommend!
This game is an different take on the crafting-survival genre. I tried to play it a year ago or so and bounced off it the first time around, so I'll say I think you need to be in the right mood for it. The crafting, the rules, the mechanics -- none of these things are spelled out for you and so you need to embrace a sort of crazy whimsey and dive in head first. Stay alive and discover the world around you. Use the beginners guide if you need to in the community hub, but also just enjoy the exploration and prepare to die and try again! Now with more whimsey!
On a seperate note, if you go to the discussions area, you'll see that the developer has personally responded to the majority of the posts with guidance and advice or even with gratitude for bringing a bug/imbalance to light (and then with actual statements that the problem has been fixed!). Hats off to this one.
Beautiful to look at and the soundtrack is mostly ambient nature sounds, no bleep bloop here. The goal is to survive long enough to unravel the mystery of the Wilds. It requires good time and resource management skills and the puzzles are challenging enough to warrant busting out pen and paper. High replay value if you are the type of person who likes to beat your own score. I've logged nearly 120 hrs on this game and have only completed it twice. The RNG makes each new game progress differently; I still haven't managed to solve all the special areas.
Echo manages to pack a lot in and still feel minimalist. The gameplay is straightforward and doesn't have any hacky tricks up its sleeves (bears won't suddenly raid your camp at night). The pacing feels like old school PC games (Myst, Sierra's catalog): low-stress and highly enjoyable. And not to worry, the love-it-or-loathe-it twee dialog fades into the background after awhile.
Great for anyone who loves nature, personal challenges, and/or the unconventional. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a non-traditional game. 10/10
When I first bought this game about a year ago it was too difficult, but several updates later I have given it another go. It is very playable now. Still a challenging game, but the survival aspect no longer overpowers the puzzle/discovery parts. The style is cool, and the story is unique. Definitely worth buying even at the full price (totally a steal on sale).
Only warning is that there isn't a very interactive community around the game unless you want to come in and make one. The wiki is pretty empty and there is only 1 basic guide. You will be alone in the wildy :P Well almost alone... [*spooky noises*]
Echo of the Wilds is, simply put, an absolutely brilliant game. It requires extensive thought and planning to effectively survive in the wilderness. With the latest updates, death is no longer left to chance. There are a vast number of things to discover, secrets to reveal, puzzles to solve, things to craft, and objectives to complete. Throughout, the game provides a perfect amount of challenge, making the player carefully think and rethink about his every dicision. The story is compelling and strange, the music is mysterious and quite fitting, and the graphics are beautifully done. The game is dazzling.
First of all, I hate creepy games and bland side scrollers so this game is absloutly astounding! Its magnificent! I Reccomend the 8.00$ To get this (Honestly its very generous for a game this good)
Pros:
*Bugs get fixed very Quickly (I Mentioned a bug on the fourm and within less than 24 hours it was fixed, talk about awesome devs)
*Music- any game without music is really bland and gets boring quick, this game's music is mysterious.
*Amazing puzzles- This game some how incorperates awesome puzzles into a 2D sidescrolling survival enviroment.
*Not-Abandonded- Most games get abandonded quickly after they come out, but the devs constantly roam the fourms, and updates come out every 3-4 months.
*Survival- This game is survival one of my faveriote genres.
*Many areas to explore- I haven't even explored them all yet!
Cons:
*Not many/None guides.
*Not much community on the fourm to help you out (Community does not mean awesome devs)
*Near Iron man mode- Doesn't auto save however you can save manually (I Think saves are limited but don't take my word on it... I Don't save often enough)
I've just started playing this game and I already can certainly say that it's amazing!
You need to survive in the forest to find out what are you doing there, what is this place (is it even real or you've just lost your mind) and to find the way back home, if it's even possible. Strange nightmares, visions, hallucinations are all the way.
This game has stunning art design (a bit odd, but really beautiful), atmospheric music and interesting concept.
But there are some annoying moments: days are way too short, you can perform only few tasks per day. Also you have to waste a lot of time getting food and trees (yeah, more difficult, but also boring, considering initially you have only 5 inventory slots). And the controls are bizarre.
And it would be really great to see some achievements that match the game's tone.
So, even if it's not perfect, I highly recommend you to buy this game to support talanted developers.
I absolutely love the visuals and will most likely play it some more simply to enjoy them. However, the survival and adventure aspects of this game are very much at odds with each other. You spend way too much time looking at loadscreens for the amount of gameplay in any given area. Imagine playing an old adventure game like King's Quest, except with annoying and unnecessary visuals while transitioning between areas. Now make those areas about 1/10th the size of a traditional adventure game. I suppose what I'm getting at is the pacing, it is terrible. The process of giving food to find recipes is also boring. In fact, a lot of the survival aspects are just poorly shoehorned into the game.
I like the general concept and I hope the developer attempts to improve upon it.
As simple as the game seems at first, you'll soon be making mad dashes for berries as the sun sets and genuinely wondering whether or not you'll be able to survive through the next day. Cursing your tools for breaking just before felling a tree, finding out that you don't have enough wood to keep your tootsies warm all night..
The gameplay is pretty simple, you're gathering for most of the game with your hands or with the relentlessly degrading tools you can make. The rewards of your survival are even more tools to help you survive longer, so it can be hard to feel like you're really getting anywhere until you manage to get your 10th character to actually make it through the harsh winter. Then it's time to prepare for the next winter.
The game was recently updated with difficulty levels. This was done in response to community complaints about the time you spend just trying to survive presenting too large an obstacle in regards to progressing with the story. There's now the option for a "casual" mode, which will surely make things a little easier and less frustrating for those of us who make mistakes or are just generally unlucky.
