Good puzzle game with a novel concept: a combination of sliding puzzle and point and click adventure. A great buy for puzzle fans, especially when it is discounted.
Nice little puzzle game where you need to rearrange rooms in the building to make sure protagonist reaches to the exit. Some rooms have special items, that allow teleporting between them, swap rooms etc.
Artstyle is pleasant, soundtrack is cozy, perfect for killing some time in the evening.
This is a really fun puzzle game. I usually don't go after puzzles since they are mostly the same old game, with boring tasks to complete, but this one is different for getting mixed with the point-and-click genre. I just find it a bit expensive, though it presents a lot of content, but I got a coupon for it and they are kinda common.
Rating / Nota: 10 / 10
at its core, rooms: the main building is a simple puzzle game: rearrange tiles to make sure the girl can exit the room and eventually return to the real world (there's a silly story with some point & click adventure elements, not that well-written, but it's more than enough for a game like this). what makes it more interesting is all the mechanics (teleports, rotatable tiles, locked doors, water, dynamite, etc.), and while there's no turn limit, there's an optional timer, and the threefold rating system is based on tile placement. most of the time you'll be able to leave relatively easily, but placing everything in their place to complete the background might provide a challenge.
at its core, it's also very flawed from a technical standpoint. it's more than a decade old originally, the so-called 'steam edition' came many years later and it's still really lacking, but even adding them all up wasn't a dealbreaker for me. no volume sliders, of course, you can't even turn off effects, some of which are pretty annoying, only the music, which in turn is quite good. only three 4:3 resolutions are available to choose from, so playing in full screen on a widescreen monitor is not recommended. and taking screenshots is straight-up broken, not only do they not appear on steam, but the files in the game's folder are all empty, 0 bytes.
aside from these technical issues, the lack of undo is worth mentioning, though it's not a huge deal for the most part, and some mechanics (dynamite and water) can kill you, making you restart if you're not quick enough, but you can also paint (well, slide or lock) yourself into a corner every now and then. luckily, the timer can be turned off, as said above, but animations will play every single time, and some of them are quite lengthy, especially the underground. I would've also liked a brightness slider, as the game is a bit darker than I wanted it to be.
on the whole, I'd still recommend it to sliding game fans, the 100 levels will keep you busy for a while and there's a level editor included, though I'm not sure how much user-made content is available and where, seeing as workshop support is not part of the steam edition either.
Nice little puzzle game. However, the graphic is outdated and the background music is quite repetitive. Only recommend it while on sale.

TLDR: Tileswap object routing game. Get protagonist from start to finish. FMV catches the eye and attention for a bit. Game is ultimately slow and unengaging. Play Munin instead.
Tileswap is a basic staple of most casual games, usually used sparsely it can be a welcome surprise that forces you to think differently on how to get to progression. When overused it quickly becomes tiresome, especially if you cannot hold a tileswapping toy in your hand, or physically interact with it. Having that extra layer to deal with is distracting and ultimately it is a lot easier to just get dis-invested from the whole thing.
To make matters worse the game does not have a very proper resolutions support, and was unable to accomodate 1600x900 fullscreen. The play area also failed to cover the whole screen that was used by the game, making the final play area a small fraction of my physical screen which further hurt both immersion and flow of gameplay as I could not readily recognize some of the objects int he rooms.
There are some tileswapping games that tried to mix in platforming, or gave rotation and tight controls to make up for it. Rooms is not really one of those and the artistic merits of the game does not quite make up for the gameplay.

Love it when I was much younger and still like it when playing this version on steam.
The puzzles are fun (some are quite simple tbh but some are rather challenging), the music is good and I actually quite like the videos they use for the main character's movement, making him a bit cocky and really cute:D
Rooms: The Main Building is a unique puzzle game with great play value and charming mechanics. You move rooms and use the mechanisms&utilities inside the rooms to exit.
Pros:
+ Unique mechanics
+ Nice puzzles
+ Somewhat has positive production values on art department.
Neutral:
~ Soundtrack is repetitive
~ Price is a bit steep for the content.
Cons:
- UI needs some tidying up. Some parts are confusing at first.
- Easy for puzzle veterans. Needs more challenge.
8/10 Overall a unique puzzle game. Its a great company to have some fun on a lazy afternoon. Dont miss it on sale (-50% recommended).
played Demo, now i bought this
i played this 2 years ago... but that was demo
now play this again, steam edition.
-
Actually, there's 2nd series of this. called 'Rooms: The Unsolvable Puzzle'
but i don't recommend that than this.
cuz it same as own puzzle style, just better graphics.
and it also another story.
-
so, how about this?
i made own my puzzle but i couldn't clear myself lol
9/10
This is a fascinating logic puzzle game - move between rooms, and also move rooms around, to find your way to the exit. Teleporters, flooded rooms, clocks, and other obstacles add to the challenge. The interface isn't great, and the game uses pre-rendered videos for a lot of the movement, which wastes a fair bit of time, but the game overcomes the limitations.
I got through all of the levels, but there's a second level of challenge where you have to finish the levels with all the rooms in specific locations, and I failed that aspect on about 10 of the 80 levels.
It's different....I agree.
But I didn't enjoy the experience. I just couldn't wait "to just get through it" so I could delete it from my machine.
It just felt sloppy and childish. Also, throughout the game, I just didn't know what ridiculous nonsense it wanted me to do next. (Sloppy)
It seemed to be torn between a puzzle game and an adolescent adventure game.
However, if you are young, all of my assessments may be mute.
Perhaps I'm being TOO critical of Rooms because I just finished The Talos Principle but I really don't think so.
I'm going to stick to my above assessment.
Rooms is slide based puzzle game that puts you in the puzzle. The objective of each puzzle is to reach the exit, but simply sliding tiles is not enough. Each tile can have different elements such as ladders, teleportation phones, tile swapping cabinets, subway rides, water hazards, and more. These elements add an extra layer of depth into the simple slider concept. The puzzles are very engaging and the difficulty ramps up well as the game progresses.
All these puzzles are wrapped neatly into an elaborate fantasy story that ties everything together nicely--very enjoyable.
Well, nice idea, clever elements and a would be a good puzzle game... but the visuals are bad, the animations and the actions sometimes are buggy... and there is always something... really annoying in the air... However, good plot twist at the end. 4/10
Rooms: The Main Building - Steam PC version - 8 / 10
First playthrough 17 hrs, finished 2015.03.28
I have fond memories of playing handheld Sliding Tile games.... easy to pick up, simple mechanics and satisfying every time. Rooms: The Main Building awakens many of these happy feelings and surprises in the game mechanics department. Innovative, odd and quirky at times, the bottom line is a good little game like this deserves your attention and there is a sequel which is imminent… I will Definitely be picking up the sequel.
Details
Your character must exit from the Tile Grid by walking into The One Tile with an Exit Door. While moving between two adjacent tiles may be as simple as walking left to right or using a ladder to go up and down, most of the game will require skillful reorganization of tiles to get around obstructed walls, teleportation with your cellphone, pumping water out of flooded tiles, tile swapping, taking the subway and more. While the each of the game mechanics are simple, layering them generates complex puzzles. Thankfully the developers showed restraint and the resulting suite of 100 puzzles progress well. The tougher puzzles lend themselves quite nicely to trial and error to open up possibilities when the brain becomes over taxed with abstract rules. The developers have included a tool for generating your own puzzles which you could take to a masochistic level of complexity…. Your personal puzzles are saved to your steam folder and can be exchanged with your homies.
What does not work in this game? There is a simple yet odd adventure story with hidden objects that tie together the 4 mansions, each mansion housing the 25 puzzle rooms; a clunky VN style interface; small video sequences for all character movements that are tooooo long; the audioscape is barely tolerable, there is no voice acting - only zoo zoo pet sounds, and I had to turn off the music; the internal achievement system did not recognize three quarters of what was finished; there are no steam achievements; YET all of this is Completely Forgivable because sometimes a game is just good; in fact this game deserves a 10/10. I am excited about the sequel coming out this year, this is a Definite Buy in my universe.
Buy this game Rooms: The Main Building if you would like a Zen and calming puzzle experience bringing the classic 2D Sliding Tile puzzle game to the third if not fourth dimension. You should buy if you like Different.
This is actually quite a decent quirky slider puzzle with a paper thin who cares story to suit. Basically the object is move your character from one room to the other until you can get through the exit door. However each room will have it's novelty items and obstacles helping and hindering you in which way to solve the puzzle. While there is more often than not more than one way to solve each puzzle. There is however only 1 way to solve it while leaving each room in the correct position so that it lines up a background picture. Achieving this is the only way you will get gold on each puzzle and see a secret ending which I myself am yet to see thanks to 5 puzzles causing me to wish i had more coffee in the house.
Having said that it isn't a difficult puzzle as it is more fun and you should be able to progress through this one alone without the need of a youtube walkthrough.
Bit dated in graphics, but it has steadily grown popularity through its availability on various platforms. I myself played it on the NDS and as soon as I saw it on Steam I immediately bought it. Hoping one day to see that elusive ending.
The downfalls of this game is that 1) There is no Steam Achievements and 2) The map maker which goes with the game is not Steam Workshop integrated so sharing your created master pieces will never be convenient.
If you like puzzle games and looking for that something completely different. This is a good one to invest a couple of hrs on and maybe see what you can create yourself with their in built puzzle maker... A sequel has already been greenlit and will soon appear on Steam.
The 'point and click' adventure aspect of this game is not terribly engaging, but the sliding puzzles are fun, enjoyable puzzles.
This game is not really something that is hard or complex in nature, it seems to be aimed more at the casual puzzler and brings some cute dynamics into the mix which when seeing for the first time is fun to play around with.
It does break some of the repetition by having an area outside the room list were you interact with your "guide" for lack of a better word to progress a somewhat odd story as to why you are doing what you are doing along with an overarching mini game which as you complete brings you closer to your release from these rooms.
I personally experenced a couple glitches that needed addressing but devs seem responsive about looking into problems and making patches.
While the current biggest complaint by a negitive reviewer has been the music and sound, I have actually enjoyed the music which is a rather whimsical tune which is a mix between what you would find playing in hogwarts and an upbeat zelda soundtrack.
First impression.
This is a sliding puzzle game with 100 puzzles and a level editor. (I'm not sure where you would find more levels for download, but apparently you can?) The twist is that you can only slide the piece you're on, so the game introduces mechanics for you to switch tiles: you can use a ladder, teleport yourself, switch out the level, and more. There are also locked doors, keys, explosives...
But wait, there's more, it gets meta. At the same you are moving the tiles, you also need to place them correctly so the background picture will look right in the end. If you manage that, you unlock items. And even more meta: these items can be used in a small point&click that is framing your puzzle endeavours.
It's all wrapped up in some photographic art that, despite being 1024x768 (the game scales it up for you if you like) does the job admirably, as does the slightly jazzy music that gives the game an old-time London feel. But you can see that from the trailer and the screenshots.
Solid puzzler, lots of (up to now) casual puzzles that provide a soft learning curve, and are orginal and fun to do. It took me about 1 hour for the first 20 levels of 100. I'm definitely going to finish this game.
What I liked:
- It works, I didn't come upon any bugs so far
- The graphics are pretty
What I didn't like:
- Having items explained to me by Mr. Book
- The levels are far too simple
Recommended for beginning puzzle solvers only.
OMIGOSH ROOMS IS FINALLY ON STEAM
Well, folks, a long time ago I bought Rooms on Big Fish Games because coincidentally it was the featured game of the day the very first time I saw the site. This was back when the shovelware developers were on the casual PC market bandwagon before they all moved to making iPhone clone games. Somehow, bizarrely, in the sea of match-3 and hidden object games there was what I now consider to be an All Time Indie Classic, Rooms: The Main Building.
Rooms was also released on Nintendo DS where it was largely ignored because of no marketing (that I know of), and despite me stumbling upon the game at B.F.G., it was definitely not getting the attention it deserved on PC. Furthermore, after B.F.G. was hacked all those years ago, it really put me off wanting to install their client again since Rooms was basically the only reason to do so. But now I don't have to worry about it because Rooms is on Steam!
I don't know if Rooms would be in my all-time top ten, but it is certainly my number one favorite puzzle game ever. As much as I love Portal and the Popcap games, I like Rooms even better. Take it from someone who owns almost a thousand Steam games: this is one of the best.
