Ryse: Son of Rome

Wow I was super impressed by this game. With it being made in 2014 the graphics are really good and the game play is fun. I normally don't leave reviews but I felt that the developers and others should know that this game is great. The story line is fun to follow as well. I am looking forward to seeing if the developers are in the works for a part 2 or something similar. I would recommend this game hands down.

A great, good old linear game. I really enjoyed combat - the moments you switch from 1v1 to be a centurion - nice!
Graphics is fantastic if you think how old this game is. Rome is stunning. CRYTEK ENGINE WAS A MASTERPIECE, PERIOD.

Great story line, was in my back log for years. Beat it in under 6 hours which would be my only complaint

Fun game, story is abit short, only took me like 10h, but its a fun gameplay worth replaying so its ok.
Its abit comfusing with the key-commands at times, but after a few trys you get it.
Something that is incredible is the fact that graffics, story and gameplay is better that alot of new games today over 10 years after realease.

Totally worth trying out.

I never thought this game was going to be so good. I'm playing in 2025, and Ryse Son Of Rome came out in 2014. I didn't expect the game to be so visually good. I would 100 percent recommend this game. The sounds are awesome, this game has the right amount of cut scenes to make it feel like you are watching a movie. Really a great job of everyone that had their hands on making this game.

Great game I remember getting this game on my Xbox one and I loved it. I love games like these and hope they make more similar ones in the future.

For years I had been interested in this game, but I never played it, never had a compatible system. In the end, I got the game for $10 and for that price I would recommend it. It is very repetitive, but in a way that makes a gamer feel badass. I tried the first half of the game with keyboard and mouse, but it was clunky and I did not enjoy it, so I grabbed my PS5 DualSense Edge and had to load a custom profile, but the controller was infinitely better to play with. The story seems to take a lot from Gladiator, but it was rather underwhelming for me. I did enjoy the game, but I also just wanted it to be over with. It took me 8.4 hours, but I was trying to 100% the game in the beginning and you can't skip the cutscenes, which is extremely annoying. Boss fights were really weak and tedious, especially at the end. I don't know, I'd give it a 6 out of ten, it looks really good.

Darth Vader might have the best hallway scene in any movie scene ever, but Marius without a doubt has the best hallway scene in any game ever. Ryse is an awesome game. While some people complain about how it feels like a "giant cutscene," I both disagree and agree at the same time, and entirely for the better. The game's story is really good (although it is just ripped from one of the best movies ever made, but good nonetheless), and the combat makes you feel like the main character, so those two go hand in hand. Very briefly on the combat, while not hard, I think the whole quick time system with the (what feels like) hundreds of slow motion executions is super satisfying and ... well ... fun! It always keeps you on your seat and the sprinkled in Tustedo formations and ballista portions help break up the pace. The campaign is a fun 5-10 hour story that is honestly the perfect length. It doesn't drag itself on like most games do, quick, to the point, but high quality.

Very briefly on the multiplayer. While not the main focus of the game, I thought it was expertly done as well! It's really fun to team up with a friend (or solo) in tons of different variations of the Colosseum, with the same unique combat system as before. The graphics really shine here, and I think despite being from 2014, this game has some of the best I have seen in any game ever. It is worth picking up for the hallway scene alone (one of the best moments in any game), but overall, the parts of the game compliment each other really well and make for a fun experience. 25 hours well spent for any fan of the Roman Empire (which should be all of us :) ).

This game is honestly the most fun I've had in a long time. The multiplayer is still active, and the campaign is very investing. (Despite not being all the historically accurate, as Nero reigned 300 years before barbarians raided Rome in its empire form) The combat and skill tree systems are amazing and fun, and the visuals are stunning. The character dialogue is great, too. I've already recommended this to some of my friends. 10/10, please play!

Short, fun game to play, nice graphics. The story is not original in any way and follow classic narrative about evil Caesar Nero. The Rome is beautiful and I was thinking for myself that it would be nice to have a game with open world, where you can explore ancient Rome. This is not the game as everything is really straightforward run and combo. The end is a bit more pathetic for me. But overall I enjoyed it.

Loved it. This is one of the only games that I would play through multiple times and I have. It's such a shame that there isn't a sequel because this game is an amazing starting point and they could really improve in the sequels. It is a little gimmicky (I think that's the word): enemies are easy to kill, even on legendary difficulties, though that may be because I've played it so much, and stronger ones just have you do a specific thing such as dodge and attack or block a series of attacks. In conclusion, great game, play it, love it, live it and beg for a sequel.

Historical Rome, fight against barbarians with a cool story. So, what's not to like?

Fairly shallow but entertaining, outstanding graphics (still!) and worth playing now that it should be able to run without melting your PC.

Although the game was released in 2014, it remains legendary in terms of gameplay, story, epic combat, and graphics. I hope a new part will be released.

It seems quite evident that this game was made for the Xbox Kinect or something similar.

Pros:

-Visuals are great.
-Combat is somewhat intuitive.
-The hook of the story is great!

Cons:

-Plays like a demo.
-Story is WAY too short. Once you get past the first act, it feels rushed.
-Level maps are far too small.
-Each act of the story is painfully short
-No open world exploration
-Collectibles aren't satisfying

This game had potential if it was given far more attention and patience than it got from development. Each act should've been longer, to the tune of hours rather than minutes. Exploring the map does not feel fulfilling. The phalanx formations and siege tactics should have had more frequent use. The story, again, far too short and deserved hours upon hours of more content. This could have been an amazing game, Game of the Year even. If it was the producer, the publisher or someone else cutting corners to just get a product on the market, shame on you. This game deserved so much more.

Fantastic! This gem has sat in my library for way too long! I'm glad to have played it, it was a bit buggy, but for being a 11 year old game its worth looking past it and playing through it! Will have to come back again and replay it.

Although the story is not long, it took me only 5.8 hours to complete, but overall the story is great, the combat mechanism is great and considering it came out in 2014 the graphics is way ahead of its time, I totally recommend it to play.

This game was ahead of its time graphically and still looks amazing. The game play is fun and the campaign is good. It is on the short side, but if you have a friend who plays multiplayer is also fun. Would highly recommend this game to anyone.

As a Roman fanboy I bought this game years ago and have quietly sat on it until I finally decided to give it a spin over the Christmas break. Holy shizzle, do I feel like a fool for sitting on it for so long.

This is a fantastic game. Visually it is a very good looking game which holds up even now in 2024 which isn't too surprising given this was a headliner game for the Xbox One back in the day and had orgasmic graphics for the time, the combat is fast paced and exciting and the execution-system is really fun once you get into the swing of it. I really enjoyed the story as well, Marius is a good protagonist who we learn and grow with, both mechanically and story-ly as the missions progress, and the story isn't half bad either, it's a good story, the plot has serious and dark moments that are treated and done nicely and treats you like an adult with subject matter, and all around it's just a really fun game. Getting to march in step with my legionaries, form a testudo and then break and start lobbing pilums at the barbarian hordes is such a treat to do.

I absolutely can recommend picking this up, if you're a fan of a good hack and slash in Roman times. I ran through the game the first time on the 2nd difficulty to get to grips on it, and immediately started a new run on the highest difficulty because why the heck not. And though it has been ten years since and Crytek probably has no interest in creating a sequel to this gem, I would love to see a sequel to this game.

A really fun game graphics are ahead of its time and the fighting system is good and well designed. The story is a little short but a fun and enjoyable story. The throwing system isnt the best and could be alot better & the movement is a bit sluggish and could be alot smoother and the climbing system could be better aswell or maybe and jumping into the game. But overall would fully recommended it anyone for a 2013 game it still good today. 8/10

A nice hack 'n slash game, with a nice little story, good gameplay, and good combat. Keeps you going, and definitely well made. Finished a single run in around 6 hours, and unless you either want to go for higher difficulties or do all the collectables, it shouldn't take you much longer either.

Its a small story but honestly a good one! A solid game with very good graphics, the music combine perfectly and making the scenes even better. The mechanics are ok, some times confusing , it takes some time to get used on how to fight. I recommend to buy this game on sale mostly bcs of the size of it but its for sure a must play game. And honey, let's be real, the gladiators in this game are hot. I mean, have you seen Marius? He's a total snack. And don't even get me started on the other gladiators. They're all so muscular and sweaty. It's enough to make a queen swoon.
So if you're looking for a game with some eye candy, Ryse is definitely the way to go. You won't be disappointed.

This game feels like a classic macho action movie, historical inaccuracies and all. The "feel" of being the Roman legionnaire is captured perfectly despite all that.

The story is fairly straightforward, in that same action movie style, and sometimes that just feels refreshing even if some of it is a bit cringe. The graphics are great even today. The big set pieces and varied locations keep the game feeling fresh. The pacing is great as the game doesn't overstay its welcome.

The combat does get very repetitive, and the boss fights especially at the end are uninspired. There is one where you literally fight the same enemy 3 times, just whittling down their health bar 3 times only to see it replenish and have to fight them again, no extra moves, no changes in their attack pattern, just fight them the same way as before. Again. To top it off, their moveset literally requires you to dodge for about 30 seconds to a minute before you can land a strike. So the boss fight lasts about 20 minutes simply because you have to keep rolling around and wait for them to get through the unblockable animations. This more than anything drags the game down, and I remember one of the times I've replayed this, I just quit once I got to the boring boss fights.

There is also no built-in way to change control-mapping. This was a big issue for me coming from the Arkham and Mordor games where X is attack, Y is block, etc. This game's native control scheme threw off my rhythm, but I was able to remap it through Steam, I just had to remember that the button prompts in-game were no longer accurate for some things.

Despite that, I've revisited this game 3 times over the last few years, which actually surprised me. Sometimes you just want a high-adrenaline, high-testosterone linear action game, and this is that. It doesn't try to be an RPG. It doesn't try to cater to every kind of player. And that's probably why I've come back to it when it's been long enough that I ask myself "Huh, was that Ryse: Son of Rome game any good?"

It felt like the good old times, when Games were fun and simple :D

Used to fixes, using fixing solutions, after all, it's a phenomenon it has been going on various games for twenty years.
However I've been trying to run this game for ten years and I can't play it. Solutions just don't work. One shouldn't been using "fixes" in the first place.
Why should I, as a player, bother in 2024 to fix a game with such a lousy technical mess? Total disaster.

nonstop frame drops , repetitive gameplay. Frame drops were so bad that i was forced to play with lock in 30 fps . It didnt matter whatsoever what i changed in the settings,people online had the same issue. The story was annoying too with the nonstop time jumps. Game felt like half life 1 in a way cause they copy pasted the same 4 enemy models. So it looked like i was massacering the same 4 guys for hundreds of times

Loved this game, cool story and simple yet engaging combat

It's beautiful, but it might as well be a David Cage game with the Simon Says gameplay. I'd actually prefer a walking simulator, honestly. It would cut out the dozens of fights with the same 3 or 4 enemies. Yes, this 6 hour game (on hard mode [which isn't hard]) has filler. Don't get me started on the story. I knew this wasn't going to be a historically accurate action masterpiece, but I was at least hoping for a bootleg Gladiator movie video game. What I actually got was short bus God of War. Steam Deck performance leaves a lot to be desired to be considered 'verified'.
