Ryse: Son of Rome

I had to seek out a steam guide to get this game running on my AMD rig (dont know if this applies to NVIDIA hardware) as the stutters/frame drops at the beginning where unplayable, my GPU was not being utilised, now with using RTSS RivaTuner Statistics Server application my game runs with a night and day difference nearly meeting my refresh rate consistently with no drops (144hz) with very high textures.

Ryse is a decent-ish time whilst thankfully being only 6 hours to beat, because sadly this games combat experience is just way too simple for me and aggressively repetitive it outstays its welcome during the early parts of the campaign all the way to the end, I had to play this game in three intervals to get through it, the visuals and story are not enough to get past the overly-simplistic combat system.

Combos dont exist and the enemy are just fodder that there are of which four types of enemies in the game so variety is extremely weak here. You just spam attack the enemies until the skull execution icon appears on their head which then leads you into a colour pattern QTE over and over and over again for the entire playthrough, these are initially fun to pull off but with there being a very limited amount of executions in the game it gets very samey quick, the turret/shield sections are a bore to get through offering no excitement or challenging parts during them.

The visuals are still great to this day for a game from 2013, the plot is serviceable and does an ok job although it does feature a revenge plot that is very similar to another piece of ancient rome media.The ancient rome time period is the saving grace here, there's not enough games showcasing this interesting part of history enough, but that's not enough to save this game.

Without a sale this game is not worth your time, even then with a sale of £2.79 id only consider if you're interested in Batman Arkham esque combat that's FAR more simple than those games and like the ancient rome time period, dont bother if those two dont apply.

This game is as if a Souls game and Assassin's Creed had a baby and DOOM was it's cool uncle.
In other words; I love it.

I guess there is a reason why it's on a big sale, I cannot play the campaign at all without the game freezing and shortly after crashing. Last night it worked with the Gladiator mode but somehow campaign is not do-able.

Got this gem on Xbox Gold back on Xbox One and remember loving it. I will say it plays so much smoother and the controls are really nice on PC. The interact buttons are as annoying as I remember but I will say it was good to play through it again. Highly recommend

Played the game for its story. Story is nice, decent, short and to the point. Combat was interesting at first but became repetitive as the game went on. Visuals are amazing, can't believe this game came out more than a decade ago. Highly recommended for those who are interested in ancient Rome and medieval combat, and for those who want to play something over the weekend. Overall a nice experience.

It is a good game, although it is rather very linear. But I do not consider this feature to be its disadvantage, but rather its advantage. The combat and the plot are well done, it is brutal and bloody. The game is also not too long, so it does not tire with its mechanics. I can highly recommend the game because it is very good 9 / 10.

A bit of fun for a weekend. Boss fights are not too challenging for button-mashers like me, and the graphics, especially with HDR over-ride on Medium, holds up pretty well. Story is fine, and the variety is enough to keep you interested. A few nice jiggly bits, too!

Visually and sound-wise it's impressive, and the context is interesting. But the cognitive challenges aren't there, and the narrative is hilariously bad.

When I played it for the first time, people around me were telling it's more of a graphic and Engine showcase than a real game. I would disagree. It's not extremely long and it doesn't have to be because unlike many games of today, in this one, every minute is just absolutely overflowing with great content. No empty open world one has to pour hours and hours into without any real joy of playing and experiencing something worthwhile. The complete opposite, a great linear experience worth one's time that one had to work through. The fact it was released 11 years ago still makes me amazed, as the graphics are just fabulous. The story itself might not be the greatest asset, however the fact I had it running so smoothly even on different older computers back then, combined with its amazing graphics, really make me think this has to be some kind of a masterpiece (and one can still see even know the CryEngine is the answer for that) concerning the optimization technique as it used to be a thing the devs cared about much more in general, I'd say. A game which one might have frowned upon back then for being soulless but in the light of the later development, those accomplishments were memorable and make it still feel completely new even now.

Bit disappointed overall but worth it when on offer - Finished the story within 6 hours, decent combat but gets repetitive and abit boring half way through. I found it quite glitchy at times too. However, the story line was pretty interesting and I feel could've gone further so shame to only be a 6 hour game.

Very good cinematics overall, as it is famous for. The combat is pretty simple, you parry and have heavy and light attacks and punches with the shield. The enemy will have blinking colors in slow mo and you press the buttons and get XP and Health for combos, yes it's like that. The combat feels somewhat like Hellblade. It is longer than Hellblade but have no puzzles. Easy nice game to turn off your brain to a Sunday. Really enjoyed it :)

Finale was so worth it. Short game, but delightful experience!

- Close combat 95% of the game, destroys your mouse and keyboard
- Poor visibility in some particular places
- Doesn't support any resolutions above 1920x1080 in full screen mode, in windowed mode supports higher resolutions but they are unusable as the game window is off center and cannot be moved

2014 game, yet with good graphics and gameplay. Story is relatively short, but the combat makes the whole of it. 10/10

It's a really great game, you can kill emperor Nero and his sons in pretty brutal ways. yet it is really annoying that you can only just pick 1 of 3 presets for keybinds. Normally this would be a deal breaker, because the controls are not at all what I am used to. However, since the games content was adequate this was acceptable.

Good game if you are looking for a short entertaining spree.

Surprisingly good, won't regret it at this price! It's one of those games you can easily complete in like a day or two.
Gameplay is simple but effective, it has some quick time events embedded into the combat, but they're actually quite satisfying and don't really feel like quick time events if that makes sense. The story starts to unravel a bit towards the end, but it kept my interest.
Visuals looks better than a lot of stuff releasing today, with surprisingly dense foliage and clean textures, however unfortunately the prerendered cutscenes are a low resolution, compressed mess.
It did however have a weird performance issue on my modern hardware, but there's a weird fix where setting an external frame limiter, like Radeon Chill to something like 200 magically gets the game to run smoothly. Without it you're stuck on 10% GPU Utilisation and 40 fps with frequent frame drops. After my hack it ran at 140fps+ no problem

This one is a graphically beautiful game, but it is not a good game overall. Rather than a complete game with a connected, sensible story, it feels like a montage of scenes for Crytek to show off their graphical accomplishments.

The gameplay loop is basically a series of quick-time events, and even if you are okay with them, one can't play a whole game oriented towards QTE alone. There is no free roam as such, which would be okay, if the gameplay itself weren't on the rails as well.

Story is meh, and it is mainly because of the episodic nature of the game. It puts you through one fighting episode to the next, with very little change in the core gameplay loop. Even the enemy diversity is pitiful, and there is a constant feel of an unfinished game lingering right behind the scenes. Most of the characters are one dimensional, moving with their assigned roles of being comically evil, good and nothing in-between.

The only saving grace (apart from the breathtaking and badly optimised graphics for a game this old) is the music. The score tries it best to fill the gaps left by the devs in the story, the battle and even the character-building. Well worth listening to separately.

At about 6 to 7 hours, the game is quite short, and still it manages to fill like a slog in the end. There are seeds of greatness here, but the ultimate outcome is mediocre, if that.

No point in buying this one unless on steep sale.

I usually never have issues getting games to run. This game is a chore to get working. I remember really enjoying this game back on Xbox One but three crashes in 30 minutes along with inconsistent framerates make this one a hard pass for me.

If you're staring at a massive game library and can't decide what to play, Ryse: Son of Rome is a solid pick.
It's a game you can jump into for a couple of hours without needing to relearn the controls. Great for winding down after a long day at work

Ryse is a melee combat action game, set in a fantasized Roman empire around the 60s AD, with famous figures and Roman gods appearing as part of the story. While it is not historically accurate, the choices were clearly deliberate, and the story, while fairly simple, is engaging - the characters, good or evil, are rich in personality, and the range of locations makes for a varied experience. The story pacing is good throughout the eight-hour campaign, which manages to offer a range of settings without any one of them overstaying its welcome.

The story is buoyed in large part by the phenomenal voice acting and motion capture - among the talented cast of voice actors, the clear star of the show is John Hopkins, playing the main character Marius; from tender scenes with family and jokes with comrades, to barking commands in the heat of battle and roaring with anger and grief, he lands every line with perfect confidence. Faces and the actors' expressions are captured brilliantly, with realistic and believable performances reflecting the quality of the voice acting.

The world around the actors is beautiful even 12 years later - armour glints under the sun; forests are lush and verdant; nights are dark and moody; fire crackles and flickers brightly. The graphics are complemented by a well-made soundscape, with the sounds of woodlands and cities providing a natural backdrop during the quieter moments, and the clashes and shouts of battle crashing all around during fights. The soundtrack, despite not sticking in your head long after you stop playing, fits the game well, containing a variety of themes to enhance the emotion of each scene throughout the game.

Clearly the game was made with a high budget and a competent set of developers across all disciplines, but unfortunately, the game's biggest shortcoming is in its most important area - the gameplay is much too simple, and despite Crytek's attempts to add variety, it too often boils down to simply bashing an enemy with your shield, slashing twice with your sword, and repeating until a skull appears above the enemy - this triggers an execution move, in which you must press the bash and slash buttons at the correct time to perform a dramatic kill - mistiming your button presses, or even pressing the wrong button entirely, does not have a major downside however, as the execution will still take place, but you will lose your 'point streak'.

The gameplay is intended to revolve around this streak, with well-timed hits and properly-performed executions increasing your streak multiplier, and giving bonuses to things like health regeneration and damage, but ultimately it is too easy to gain a good streak without having to vary your gameplay. Games like this tend to reward variety and punish repetition (think Tony Hawk's Pro Skater multiplying higher for using different moves, or Batman: Arkham Asylum rewarding the use of different gadgets) but Ryse does not contain the variety required for this, forcing it to allow you to endlessly repeat the same two moves you learn within the first minute of gameplay.

Finally, let's talk about replayability. Ryse's campaign does not offer a great deal of variety, with one playthrough being essentially identical to the next. The hardest difficulty, Legendary, is only unlocked by completing the campaign on one of the three easier modes, so to experience that (and unlock its corresponding achievements) you must play through the story twice. There is an arena multiplayer mode, which allows you and another player to enter the Colosseum as gladiators, taking on various missions such as rescuing citizens from barbarians or capturing and holding zones - these days, you're unlikely to find another random player online, so finding a friend to play with is probably the best way to experience this. The game has a substantial set of unlockable achievements set across singleplayer and multiplayer modes, most of which can be unlocked solo, and the campaign includes collectibles which unlock additional story and art which can be viewed from the main menu.

Ultimately, your enjoyment of Ryse will hinge on how satisfying you find the gameplay - if the simplicity doesn't bother you, you will find a high quality and enjoyable game. If you are used to more complex action games, you may find Ryse's combat too lacking to engage you. However, this many years after release, the price should have lowered enough that you'll more than likely find Ryse to be an entertaining and quality game.

Very good game. Can't believe its a its a game from 2013. Works perfectly in steamdeck and worth the price especially it has deep discount. A good less than 10 hours, linear game.

Great graphics with hack and slash gameplay. An enjoyable story with beautiful cutscenes. My complaints include the repetitive combat without any variation besides 4-5 different enemy types and the very obnoxious PC performance.

TO FIX PC PERFORMANCE: Download RivaTuner and set the max frame rate to your monitors refresh rate. Definitely more playable than the 30-60 FPS at first.

This game would be perfect for gamers fascinated by ancient history and Rome in particular. The combat element is very satisfying and the engaging storyline keeps players in suspense.

Took me a bit to decide to recommend this game. It's...how should I put this...meh. Meh plus. The story is meh, the gameplay is meh, the length is however perfect, as opposed to what some people say, and it looks good. Given the story, which is a sub-standard loss and revenge story with some weird supernatural elements sprinkled in and a hack and slash gameplay that is by nature repetitive, which neededly has one or two different mechanics every now and then, the game might almost feel to long toward the end. Yes, the setting is a plus and so are the graphics, the game looks good in 2025 on a RTX 3070 at 1440p with 1.5x1.5 supersampling. If you're into Roman stuff, a bit of hack and slash and short, linear games, it's almost perfect, and on sale it's a must. Level design pretty great. But if you're expecting something really good, or great, avoid. Not sure what happened in the development of this game, I'm pretty confident it should have been much more/better.

IMPORTANT: Technical issues on my rig, and not the only one. For NVIDIA users at least, go and limit the game's FPS from the NVIDIA Control Panel - to whatever you like and your rig can handle, I limited mine to 143 fps. Otherwise, the game's framerate was horrible, highly inconsistent ranging between what seemed like under 30 to whatever.
