A flawed game but I enjoyed my time with it. I had to look at a few fixes to get the aspect ratio fixed but other than that I didn't have a ton a technical issue. It's not a super long game but it was really cool to see the art direction DE went with this game and what eventually became Warframe's art style. There were also a number of themes in this game that reminded me of Resident Evil which was funny.
the good old dats
Ah, Dark Sector, the game that asks, 'What if a ninja had a boomerang... but make it emo?' You play as Hayden Tenno, a grumpy dude who wakes up with a mutant arm and decides, 'Yep, time to use this to decapitate people in slow motion!'
The Glaive—a three-bladed frisbee of death—is the star of the show. It’s like a Swiss Army knife for sociopaths: Need to cut a guy in half? Glaive. Need to solve a puzzle? Glaive. Need to impress your friends at a deadly game of catch? You guessed it—Glaive.
The story is what happens when you mix 50% secret government experiments, 30% Eastern European grimdark, and 20% ‘we’ll explain this in the sequel’ that never came. Meanwhile, the voice acting hits the perfect balance between 'brooding anti-hero' and 'did this guy just stub his toe?'
The gameplay is fun until you realize it’s basically a series of murder-puzzles interspersed with bad guys yelling generic villain stuff. 'You can’t stop me!' Well, actually, I can—with my boomerang of doom!
Oh, and the infected arm powers? They’re great until you realize it’s just the developers going, 'We could’ve made another Resident Evil, but nah, let’s throw a cool frisbee in there.'
But let’s be honest, you didn’t come for the plot. You came to throw the Glaive, watch it spin, and cackle like a madman. For that, Dark Sector delivers. 7/10—would Glaive again.
old
one of my all time fav games
ive only just started playing and i already have a couple of gripes with this 15 year old game (that i bought before it went free, only now am i getting to it in my backlog)
firstly; despite the resolution selecting going up to 2560x1080, it doesnt actually support 21x9 resolutions. and while we are on the subject the code that tells the game what aspect ratio to use is actually bugged in the game requiring manual modification of the config file.
second major issue with the PC release is the massively blown out audio and the seemingly broken sliders. the whole first level all i could here was this loud peaking wind whistling noise. turning it down did seemingly nothing.
3rd issue is a personal issue. it feels like a hilariously generic pre-2010 third person shooter... which is probably exactly what their publisher at the time wanted. bland- boring- grey and brown. this coupled with the nebulous health indicator, seemingly no cover system or movement to speak of, and just truly strange controls for mouse and keyboard that bundle like 90% of actions to space for what ever reason make it pretty awful to play. i truly feel that this game is so bad **because** of DEs old publisher and it makes me glad they are self published and making stuff they want to make because holy shit is Warframe and Soulframe fantastic (and the Amazing Eternals... RIP to the second hero shooter to grab my attention after TF2)
despite the review i will probably chip away at this while i wait for Warframe 1999 just for the story. (and so i can look for little refrences and eastereggs when 1999 drops) if the game gets good i will strike through this review and revise it.
so this is how warframe begins, plays sorta like GOW (Gears Of War) but is kinda jank in some places, a little on the harder side of things in some spots but over all a decent game 7/10
Fans of warframe or sci/fi action rpg's
TLDR: The game definitely shows its age (2008) and certainly doesn't stand up to other titles from that era game play wise. Game play: 6/10. The story is compelling enough for Warframe fans to want to finish it, but lacks depth and development. Story: 6/10. All around, not bad for a $10 game and a 6-10 hr playthrough and even better since it was made free by the developer to promote their new expansion to Warframe. I'd still recommend it as a good play through on a weekend where you're not sure what to tackle and looking to round out another game experience.
First off: this game is very much a prequel to the MMO Warframe. It's made by the same company and was their first game. If you like the world setting of Warframe, this is a good place to get a little background lore for how things started off. (Emphasis on little, although there are plenty of Easter eggs that warframe players will notice like enemy inspiration and mod types) As with a lot of the newer quests and expansions for Warframe, the plot is a little on the contrived side. The game doesn't truly explain a lot of the "why" behind the decision points in the plot, stuff just sort of happens. It does successfully introduce the concepts that are the core of the world experience in Warframe much later on, although it doesn't make tons of sense with the time gap of thousands of years between the events in this game and in Warframe. You'd think things would have changed more than they actually have, or so it would seem. Also, the characters aren't well rounded enough to get truly invested nor do we get enough time with them to understand all their motivations, flaws, and development. (Mild spoiler) For example, the game basically states that the main character "was a misunderstood bad boy who pushed people away" at the start and at the end "he was made a good man". The plot says it, so it must be so, but we don't really see tons of development or flaws to begin with to notice much of a change. The storyline is engaging enough to see it through to the end. Overall, the story is a little above mid as a whole.
The game play definitely feels clunky if you're used to modern FPS or 3rd person shooters. It feels similar to Resident Evil, but then also occasionally pulls out boss fights where you have to go full Warframe fighting style to make it through. There's also a cover mechanic (that's never truly explained) but true to its 2008 form, the main character super glues themselves to the strangest walls to take "cover" and can still be shot by almost every enemy in the area. The weaponry is limited, but gets the job done, and lets the player experiment with a couple of different gun play options. I'd personally recommend against the sniper. Scoped in, it feels like the character is drunk and high at the same time with how much the cross hairs move. The pistol and glaive weapon are really the stars of the show and you'll have to use them quite heavily to succeed. Oh, and grenades are basically made of rubber, so use utmost caution when throwing them. Overall the game play was clunky and sluggish at times, but generally paced well enough to keep your interest and you don't get bogged down with too much of the same thing before getting a new ability or weapon to try out. It definitely takes some getting used to, but after about the first hour or so you get the sense of what you're supposed to do when you enter a new area.
GOOD GAME
This game requires some manual work to get it to run. Such as getting an application to Uninstall every version of PhysX you have and then install that one that's within the game's files, and then editing a configuration file in order to fix the aspect ratio.
But after that, it's pretty good. Still slightly janky, but I'm still having fun going through the game.
It's worth it. But remember that this is an OLD game and you need to put in some effort to make it work. But it WILL work.
Old but gold.
The prequel to Warframe. Honestly I kinda like it more. These days it is a pain in the ass to get it running right.
for the love of God could you guys please put achievements in this game
A product of its time for sure, I wouldve loved this as a kid and do now, and I mightve heard of Warframe earlier had I known about this game as well lol
I remember this game being really fun!
DE in an absolute power move decided to give the game away 10 days after I bought and played through it. 😭
Well worth it tho, for what it was for its time and the bs the devs needed to deal with in order to get the funding needed for the game. Honestly, without Dark Sector turning out the way it did, who knows if we'd get Warframe the way it ended up being developed and it honestly may've been for the best.
Graphics still hold up fine to this day imo and there were parts that were genuinely challenging to tackle but remained both fair and fun. Overall a solid experience in my book.
The OG!
Great action game! Very creative with nice graphics and gameplay. It plays like the action-oriented Resident Evil games.
DE, remaster this and put it in Warframe as a secret. Or resell it for $10, like something please this is such a fun game. It's buggy, sure, but the bugs are all funny. The gameplay is still solid, story is entertaining, just fix the post processing and the 16:9 resolution please I beg you.
Its just good.
I played DarkSector back when the game first launched on PS3. I instantly fell in love with it as well as following Digital Extremes games for many years (My Dad played their pinball games, I played Unreal a fair bit.)
So, once DarkSector released I jumped on it after playing the Demo. This game honestly surprisingly aged well, I can still play this and enjoy it like I was first playing it back on the PS. The controls are easy to pick up, the story is fun, the glaive is just my go to (Especially in Warframe lmao)
I recommend people give DarkSector a go, especially if you adore Warframe. Trust me it hits hard when you played this before joining Warframe.
There is no crazy story that will hook you in, at this point most probably know that this is a prequel to Warframe.
Game's old, it hasn't aged all that well and with that in mind it feels like a solid game for its time.
Even now, on the steam deck, the game looks amazing and plays really well. It can feel clunky at times.
The game's just a great time on the steam deck.
PSA if you do plan on playing on the steam deck, make sure to select proton GE 7-0.6 otherwise you'll have a bad time with very frequent crashes, hope this helps.
I remember playing the OXM Demo Disc for this a ton! The game is pretty good! :D
John Sector attempts to stop some russian morons from causing a widespread epidemic that turns people into angry metal people.
its a fun game to go back to but if you have a AMD GPU "DO NOT BUY THIS GAME". you can only play it if you have a Nvidia GPU, found that out after I switch to them.

I only played this game so I can catch any similarities in the next Warframe update. It was worth it for that I guess.
I am loving this game so far. 2 thumbs up. I am playing this game on the steam deck, and it should be steam deck verified. This game needs achievements.
Not original enough. There is no story there. Boring.
yes
You're probably only on the store page of this game if you know of Warframe, or are prolific in its community. You do not want to play this. It's one of the clunkiest shooters I've ever played, and is rife with technical problems, and gameplay jank that I cannot abide by, even for a 2008 game. Getting the game to work was almost impossible, and getting my warframe-trained brain to work with it was even harder.
-Sprinting severely impedes your strafing movement
-Enemies spawn in waves during each encounter, and these encounters last 5 times longer than they should
-Once you upgrade a weapon, you CANNOT SWAP THEM OUT FOR NEW ONES
-If you sell a weapon for money with upgrades on it, you do not get your upgrades back, or any money from them, just the weapon you sold
-No sense of direction, or forward progression is given by the game in any respect, and you will be completely stuck without a guide on your first playthrough
-You will be forced to kill the strongest enemies with only your glaive, since you do not get many bullets, and the guns are even more inaccurate than in Borderlands 2, so the bullets you do get are wasted very easily
