Ylands is a whimsical sandbox adventure where you can build, explore, and survive in a world that looks like it was crafted from origami by a hyperactive child. You start as a shipwrecked adventurer with nothing but a loincloth and an unreasonable amount of optimism. From there, the world is your oyster — assuming oysters come in low-poly and occasionally try to eat you.

The game offers a plethora of activities:
• Crafting: Combine sticks, stones, and sheer willpower to create tools, weapons, and questionable fashion choices.
• Exploration: Traverse diverse biomes, from tropical paradises to icy wastelands, all while questioning your life choices.
• Building: Construct everything from cozy cottages to elaborate castles, and then watch as a wild boar decides to move in.

Multiplayer adds another layer of chaos. Team up with friends to build a floating fortress, only to realize none of you know how to sail. Or engage in friendly PvP, which quickly devolves into a slapstick comedy of errors.

While Ylands has had its share of controversies — like locking key features behind DLCs — it’s made strides in improving the player experience. Recent updates have addressed many concerns, making the game more accessible and enjoyable. As one player noted, “I played it for a good bit with some friends and enjoyed it a lot. Ships and sailing are what initially drew me into it but the rest is quite enjoyable too.”

I like that the game is free but i don’t like it is a micro game while yes many stuff in shop is amazing i specially love the blueprint side but i also hate it as a gorgeous elven ship costs £1000 just for a blueprint while yes you can get money in shop by achievement but is not enough and that price is stupid for a blueprint for the actual ship to spawn in world? Yes but a blueprint !?? No so i will give this game as smooth it is on controls and eyes and as gorges it hides i will sadly give this a 50/50% recommendation

Don't buy this. It's a grindly, pathetic, pay-to-play microtransaction riddled nightmare.
In early access days it was a nice building, exploration single player / co-op game, think something like minecraft + freerange ocean sailing. Now you can't even play free co-op with a friend on a server without being railroaded into insane level of tutorial quests and bombarded with idiotic stuff they want you to pay real money for.

This game has departed so far from the original concept that early access people should get a refund because the product we paid for doesn't even exist.

Game is dead and discontinued... Servers are dead so you cant enter the game,just dont waste your time. Thank me later

Not a bad game... but this game was a lot better few years ago, when it was simple single / co-op game. I sadly dont like adding currencies, online mini games and all this kind of stuff that made this awesome simple exploration game in my opinion worse. it was like cartoon the forest, but now, with all the micro transactions... uh

but in the end, idea is great, graphics is cool, world is nice, just the "recent updates" are not that great

also, now, you cant really play like before simple co-op game, as there are quests and they are not shared across players and friends, meaning its literally single player where you can see your friend :(

I played this game the moment it hit the Steam store. Bought it before it was a free-to-play game, so bear that in mind going forward.

I love the gameplay loop and the game is generally fun. Obviously it was pretty bare at the time but it has had some nice content drops over the years. It seems like they are focusing on building a community experience rather than a solo one, which is fine, but bear that in mind if you plan on playing by yourself.

I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay loop of building boats and sailing them, finding unique locations with unique loot. Some of which requiring preparation to even get to.

Combat is somewhat underwhelming but it isn't too bad. There is unique equipment that you can find and that helps it feel a bit more rewarding.

All your typical open-world survival type experiences are here; hunger, weather, etc.

The art style is simplistic or "low-poly" which is a nice style but a tad overdone. Having done modelling myself it's fun to make and can come together to make a cool style, though it begs to make me wonder where that extra development time went if it wasn't on the modelling, I digress.

The gameplay experience is probably a solid 7/10, nothing crazy but it definitely has it's moments.

However, there is a massive negative black hole that has sapped all good will from the developers... the store.

The monetisation is absolutely bonkers! Over time the game has been monetised to hell. Every chance to get money from you, they take. It's plastered everywhere and it's constantly in your face.Also, the store page and especially the store video are clearly marketing the game to kids, which makes the monetisation seem even scummier and incredibly predatory. They are treating us like we are stupid. A polar bear!? Wow!

Honestly I had high hopes for this project. Even got my buddies to buy this game and play with me around release, boy what a mistake! I feel only embarrassment and the devs should feel shame!

4/10 for the overall experience. I do not recommend.

Playing the game soon after it released was relatively fun, but a little too janky to enjoy. Returning was just a punishing mess of pay-to-enjoy monetization mechanics that resulted in an entirely different type of gaming experience. It's difficult to determine what the people behind this game were thinking, but the sell-out, cash-grab factor was dialed all the way up and, combined with changes in the overall direction, drowned out what enjoyment might have been possible. The entire evolution of this title wreaks of the shameful practices that permeate many modern games.

I've owned this game for a while now and it's gone through plenty of changes. I'll say however that it's latest major updates have changed it for the better quite a bit. The exploration mode (which costs in game currency) is actually really fun and can earn you lots of in game currency just doing quests. But the exploring aspect is quite well done now and much more interesting than the early days. For new and old players, I'd say now is the time to come back and take a look. My only major problem is that the melee combat is a little weird but it's not too bad.

TLDR: New updates make to exploration make the game worth playing.

So, I played this game when it first came out and LOVED it. It was an amazing open world with so many cool generated structures, and the building system was great. When exploring I was always finding new things.

Fell off the game for a bit, then came back a couple years later only to find it was pretty much an ENTIRELY different game. It was more like roblox than anything. Even the exploration mode was so much worse.

Came back AGAIN a bit more recently to see if anything had gotten better, and while it has improved since that middle stage I still have to say they just haven't lived up to the initial version of this game. I mean what was the point of changing it so much? They had an almost perfect game to start with and instead of being smart about marketing or something to get more players they just....make an entirely new game, and then try to go back to the first version but still make it worse???? What????

Anyway, maybe its changed AGAIN since I played it last but the exploration is so boring now, it feels so....linear and not open world at all, etc etc. Don't recommend it.

every time i try and play it it says i have wifi issues (my wifi has never ever ever gone below 500 mbs download speed) itll launch properly 1/15th of the time and its a great game when it runs....

i paid money for this.
