If you couldnt get enough of that game as a kid then this game is right up your alley. Its just a simple racer that brings back that retro feel. It can be quite tuff at times but still fun overall. Physics are great and the graphics are as they should be, definitely check this out if you loved Super Off-Road. Its just a fun lil overhead racer, simple as that.
Abandonware. Last update 18months ago, couldn't even be bothered to get it out of early access.
I was a big fan of the Super Off Road arcade game as a kid and I was hoping to relive that experience with ThunderWheels. I've been following the game for a few years while waiting for the game to come out of Early Access, but finally just decided to buy it on sale.
Unfortunately, my friends and I played it four-player local for about 20 minutes and the first impressions weren't positive. The truck controls are just too finicky and we would easily get messed up beyond recovery. It was hard to tell who was winning or how far we progressed in the race. It wasn't competitive or fun.
In addition, the interface is clunky to navigate for multiplayer. I wish each player could just join the game and make their own car choices at the same time. It isn't clear if there is any difference between vehicles. The music doesn't seem to fit the game and is too loud. You also can't seem to easily quit part way through a race.
Perhaps we gave up too soon, but I decided to get a refund. I might consider purchasing ThunderWheels again with a better sale and/or with improvements. I'd like to see some vehicle upgrades like Super Off Road. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the game has been updated much in the last couple of years besides some minor bugs.
Excellent little sandbox racer very reminiscent of Super Off Road except with more tracks and vehicles. ThunderWheels feels to me like I remember Super Off Road feeling with a few omissions and a few additions. You do not collect nitros and upgrade your vehicle with your winnings, you now earn points based off your ranking in a series of races with the winner determined at the end. In addition to the classic static view there are two other views; the tethered third person camera is preferred to better anticipate the terrain on your vehicle. This game is simple and it runs very smooth. Very much worth the price.
Ignore people complaining about the controls if you were a Iron Man Stewart Super Off Road fan, they are exactly like that.
Game is tons of fun, menus are rough and need work, but this is highly recommended to anyone who likes the old top down racers, I even like the other views.
Worth the money!
while it can be fun and something similar to the old arcade cabinet game offroad. there are plenty of glitches at this review time. not really fullscreen, sometimes hidden objects, my guess is object hit box seperated from image frame, how do you change camera angles to first person? even in offline mode using a controller you cant pause the game to quit, you must reach for the Esc key. online is just playing against ghost recordings of "racers". I hope it gets better, for now it is not bad but not great.
Driving control is all over the place, menus are inexcusably sluggish for a game made in the last twenty years, and for as much as I love SID music, it's way too loud. Not what I was looking for, even at the low price point.
If you liked Ironman Offroad Racing, this is the game for you.
If you're too young to know that game, just know that Thunder Wheels is a proper old school hardcore racing game where skill actually matters and it's not just about pressing pedal to the metal all the time. Physics sim is probably the best in this kind of games. Very recommended!
Great game. Obviously a modern version of Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road. The workshop and ongoing support makes me feel like this game will only get better. Relatively simple, but fair racing.
Honestly I was hoping for a Super Off-Road or Driiftmania experience and then I was surprised in a bad way.
I bought this game and made it a star in a party here in my house. I invited a lot of friends for a party play.
Started a 6 players game and I was very frustated. The controls are not responsive at all. At first I thought that the problem was the type of car that we got, and everyone changed to another one. It didn't change enough the gameplay... the turning was still bad. I even tried to play solo thinking it was a input lag issue, but it wasn't.
Because of that the game is not fun at all. I was really embarrassed because I gave a party for my friends with that game being the main attraction. I thought I would experience the same good memories from other games of the same genre but not. Hopefully the team behind this game can play the Super Off-Road / Ironman (Genesis / Mega Drive / SNES / DOS) and Driiftmania (Wii) to understand how smooth the controls must be in this kind of game and then improve.
For the first time I'm asking for a refund. That's sad.
Great game. Reminds me of Ivan Ironman's offroad for the NES. Controls feel similar and it has that 80's feel. Graphics are clean and not too polished, which works well. Physics are great. If you hit a jump at a certain angle you will barrel roll, etc. Overall - good fun for much less than you would pay for an retro systems cartridge back in the day. I remember buying new games for $35 - $45 in the 80's and 90's. For less than 10 bucks, this is a steal.
This game for those that remember is heavily based on the Amiga game Skidmarks. Back in the day this was one of my favourite racing games and at the time was one of the best arcade racers. Thunder Wheels recreates this beautifully and is a really fun game to play. I look forward to seeing how it develops further as it goes through development.
+ Cars are sluggish.
+ Xbone controller's analog stick understeers loads, dpad oversteers load.
+ Menus are awful to navigate.
+ Couldn't quit my last race, had to finish.
+ Snow/green/mud/sand doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
+ Music was way too loud. No individual sound sliders.
In short: not as fun as "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road
I've only played Thunderwheels for a half hour at the time of writing this.
I'm hooked already.
This is top-down racing at its finest. Everything feels just right. The tracks are fun, the vehicles feel weighty and are just the right amount of tricky to drive.
The graphics are crisp and beautiful. The sound track is awesome too. Throwback to the 80s.
Currently there is only local multiplayer, but there are online run championships which I'm looking forward to competing in.
This one is a real gem and has a bright future if the devs keep it up.
A very nice reskin - reboot of the old Ivan "Ironman" Setewart's Super Off Road arcade game. I used to play that a lot on the arcades!
Pros:
-Tracks are very similar.
-Obstacles are also faithful.
-More than 4 cars !!!
-Great graphics.
-Awesome soundtrack.
Cons:
-Maneuvrability is difficult, both on gamepad or keyboard.
-Tends to crash when pausing a race (hitting ESC and selecting options from there).
-Original used to earn cash (per wining race and bonuses on road) and use it for upgrades (accel, tires, top speed, shocks, and nitros!! (which are also on road bonuses)) This can be a further update (plus if it has the nice girls when shopping and winning).
-Only 1 nitro per race???
Overall a great title, shall try the multiplayer option. The online option sounds very very interesting !!
I really expected to find more items, there's only a nitro boost that you can use from time to time. It's just a rather vanilla one-screen racing game right now, I hope it evolves into something deeper before the final release.
This game is pretty good, albeit simple. Graphics are simple, but when the game is that smooth, graphics don't need to be complicated.
For solo play, this game can be boring as there really isn't any achievements or rewards or upgrades or etc....
But, if you are playing in a group, that really brings the party! Drinking game? absolutely! Almost has the same "fun" as Mario Party!
Give this game a 7/10. They could do soo much with a game like this.
ps. there is no online competitions. LAN or solo only so it appears...
Nothing like the 80's game! Played it for half an hour and hate it! The old game gave you in game prizes and prize money to upgrade your vehicle. Have not seen it up to now! Please tell me later on you can upgrade your vehicle. If no upgrades, then I am sorry to say, not worth it, won't play it any longer!
A must have for any Steam Library! This is my goto game for a quick play with friends.
This game is a lot of fun. First races are quite hard, but you learn how to drive your vehicle fast and in no time you will be winning some races, but don't expect to make it to the top of a season without a lot of trainning. The driving is well calibrated, making the control quite easy once you are used to the physics of your vehicle, but mastering each car takes a long time.
AI is good enough to make every race challenging but not impossible (I haven't tried the Hard Mode, not there yet with my driving). The game is still in early access, but I haven't found any bug so far, although, I wish it gets updated with more tracks soon.
I can´t wait for the Online to be available.
A 3D multi-camera and cool physics remake of the retro-classic "super off road" car racing arcade videogames. The car driving is good and the different cameras create a new experience compared with the old top-view gameplay. Retro graphics and music. Fun to play with other mates in the same keyboard. the AI is decent. It could be nice to have the online!. I would recommend it if you enjoyed off-road.
I've only had this game for a short while, but it's turned out to be everything I'd hoped for. Anyone who has played the dubiously named "Skidmarks" on the Amiga will know what to expect. The physics are very dodgy indeed - as they should be in this type of game - and under my control the poor cars go flying off in all directions. So far I've had around five races on the easy level and have come last in every one of them - but that's because I'm useless at this type of game and not the game's fault!
I'm sure there are people around who would be able to ramp up the difficulty level and still win every time - but personally, I'm still having fun rolling my vehicle all over the place and coming last.
Right - I'm going to stop writing, switch the difficulty level down to "very easy" and have another go. In the meantime, do yourself a nostalgic favour and click "Buy Now"!!!
I've only played for an hour so far but I already recommend this game. It brought me back in time to the arcade where I used to play "Ironman Super Off Road" and "Super Sprint". The gameplay and physics of the cars are really well balanced, AI seems difficult to beat on the first races but is trully challenging and you can see that it's fair, for instance you can crash into the AI (and you will) and the AI can crash into your car and you can see that the AI has no advantage whatsoever.
The game is still in early access and you can see that there's a lack of content to extend the life of the game but is something I hope will come with the time before it is released. It will be nice to have items in the line of the avobe mentioned arcade games (oil puddles, spanners, etc.). Maybe some kind of challenge system will be also nice to have.
