Good adventure game
nice game went to the wire to interact with it and I got fucked up, and the last save was fucked up, and all over again Liking
Outstanding game. Dark, eerie, patient, uncanny.
This is one of the games that used to come as addition when purchasing a random with PC game magazine. I heard of it but actually never played before.
When I realized was on Steam I definitely gave it a go.
I'll point straight away at the elephant in the house: It is an old point and click adventure game.
As such, it's focus is not on graphics or "gameplay" but it's core is narrative, atmosphere, enigmas but most important: it does require patience as there aren't many helps.
Story is very well written, you get immersed quite quickly into it.
Sounds and captions are also very well made and play a big positive impact on the overall Gothic atmosphere.
I din't found many of the enigmas very difficult, exeption made for 3 or 4 that got me stuck a good few hours figuring things out.
I will rate it as difficult mainly beause in 2024 we are not really into this kind of games anymore and some can definitely struggle.
I could finish this game without using any guide so if you take your time you can definitely make it through.

Classic horror point-and-click adventure. The big reveal at the end isn't too surprising, but it's a fun journey with nice settings.
One of my all-time favorite adventure games! Perfect for the Spooky Season with it's gothic ambience, tragic story, and gruesomeness that (thankfully for me, lol) lovingly rendered in very dated 2000s graphics. I played this game a ton as a kid, along with Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring, because both just have so much great atmosphere and compelling mystery stories. In my recent replay on Steam, I would still find myself just standing by the fireplace in the main hall of the castle or by the windows in the dining room while it rains outside just listening to the soothing soundscapes. The graphics are quite dated nowadays but are still quite charming (the video segments not withstanding, lol).
As mentioned, the story too, is quite compelling, with a good (if perhaps predictable, nowadays) twist ending. The story lives rent free in my head sometimes because I do still feel really bad for a lot of the characters in this ultimately very tragic story. This combined with the great atmosphere and charming aesthetics just makes it top-notch for adventure games.
However, there are plenty of issues to be aware of. First, the acting in the English version is, quite frankly, rather atrocious, but that was pretty standard back in the day for these kinds of games, especially translated ones. Also, there are plenty of script errors where dates and names of background characters or events may be off from one level to another.
Also, the game tries to be overly-logical to the point of madness... there is a LOT of time-wasters in this game, where you have to ask someone to do something for you and then you just have to wait around for possibly upwards of 10 minutes (I think you have to visit ALL open location screens in the current chapter in or to progress with them, leaving the game running for 10 mins will not work). The other time waster from trying to be logical is just the tremendous amount of backtracking you have to do. I mean, you have to do this anyway, but a lot of it is because Samuel will (most of the time) not want to pick up, interact, or even see something on screen until you have been told you need it (or just hinted at). Great for realism but major waste of time (but that is another staple of this era of adventure games). Most solutions to puzzles are logical, but do also require a LOT of backtracking and pixel-hunting. For that reason, a walkthrough is almost required, I feel.
Another gameplay issue is having to wait for a character to finish their (sometimes lengthy) animation sequence before they will speak with you.
Oh also, there is a dreaded slider puzzle...
I was playing this on Windows 11 and I had to make sure I ran the game inc Windows XP Compatibility mode and with Admin privileges. The only major issue I encountered was in the last couple of chapters, once it is raining most heavily outside, all outside scenes made all other animations (including the main character's walking) slow down to a snail's pace and thus just a chore to walk anywhere outside.
Still, I would definitely recommend this game, with use of a walkthrough to spare you a few hours of needless time wasting. It is still very much well worth a playthrough!
In general, puzzles that require purely erudite knowledge arent bad. Puzzles that require purely esoteric knowledge and are potentially unsolvable are bad. This game has both. Which means - tumbs down.
The game is good and tbh youd need a guide to really know what to do and where to go but other than that, my only complaint is i wish there was a post credit scene of everything after.
good game
I finished the game in around 36 hours. This game wouldn't stand today's gameplay standards for the lack of replayability, and this is one of the key reasons behind the demise of the adventure games genre as a whole. Nevertheless, if you can get it on sale, and back in early 2000s you were already a gamer (or you can adjust your expectations accordingly), you're going to enjoy Black Mirror.
Besides sentimental value, think Broken Sword 1 and 2 or Jack Orlando (which I recommend if you haven't played them), the atmosphere is definitely there. The plot and the riddles are decent overall. There are some gaps and questionable points in the story but it doesn't take away the fun. It's also 100% linear, but for a point-and-click creation from 2003, it's fully expected.
Best recommendation is that this game left me curious about the next episode so I'm about to install Black Mirror 2.
I first saw this game back in the Autumn of 2004 on a late night Bulgarian TV show. It was late Friday night, the rain gently pouring outside, I was browsing through the channels, when I saw a game, and it immediately grabbed my attention. It was quite unusual to see a game being played on TV. The show continued all night (until 4 AM).
At the time, I knew nothing about this game or the adventure quest genre, but seeing Black Mirror was love at first sight. Back then, having no internet at home, I was completely unaware what this TV show was - the logo was hard to decipher. The next day I watched that channel all day, hoping to see an ad about the show, so I know how it's called, and when to watch it.
Eventually, I found out the show was called Myst, and was aired every Friday from 22:00 to 04:00, and it was divided into two segments. First, gaming news, anime, movies, etc., and around midnight they started playing a game, with viewers calling to navigate the host on what to do, solve puzzles, and essentially play the game together. A bit like online streaming before it was popular or cool.
I spent many long Friday nights watching games. After they finished The Black Mirror, they played Still Life, Aura, Myst 4, Schizm 2. Unfortunately, the show got cancelled, but my love for the genre was sparked.
Many years later, in the 2010s, the host Roro finally managed to get back on air, with a similar show - NEXTTV, this time even longer - 20:00 - 04:00. Together, we managed to play lots of adventure/quest games like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Subject 13, Keepsake, and so on.
***
The Black Mirror is my favorite game of all time. I've played 5-6 times, I played both sequels 3-4 times, I even played the new one, but I was a bit disappointed. What do I love about BM so much? The story is amazing - dark, gloomy, emotional, deep. The soundtrack is phenomenal, hearing the piano of Lady Eleonor always gives me tremendous nostalgia. The puzzles are hard enough, but not insane. The characters and locations are very well-made.
Sure, some might say the graphics look bad, there is pixel hunting at times, the voicing is bad, etc., but that was never something that bothered me that much as a kid. Of course, playing the game now, I notice some of the flaws I overlooked back then, but they still don't bother me that much. I will always love this game (2 and 3 are also very good), and I hope someday it gets a well deserved remaster.

PS: Rest in peace, Roro, and thanks for all the fish.
Weird interface. Right click doesn't seem to do anything at first and left click serves as examine and action key in the environment. But after being stuck for a while i realise right click does occasionally "look closer" at something in order to move the game a long. It would be more intuitive if right click gave a description of a hotspot while left click would be your action button... like every other adventure game. Still recommended so far as the atmosphere and story are good and it's a proper brutal old school adventure game with hard puzzles and good exploration.
I played this as a child, and could not remember what the name was. I'm happy its on steam!
Batesi!
(English) Black Mirror is truly hard to categorize. Compared to modern P&C adventure games it is unforgiving and difficult. There is also a kind of clunkyness in the character animations and voice acting, which, to be honest, is sort of hilarious and grows on you over time; it has a very unique style.
Now let us analyze the difficulty, which is both a positive and a negative. First of all it is refreshing to see puzzles that actually require some foreknowledge of the world. This ranges from the order of astrological signs and their star shapes to the correct way to order basic logic puzzles. Without giving any direct spoilers I will say that these are on the level of the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, give or take. So not overly difficult or anything, but as an avid P&C adventure gamer, it had been a while since I had seen a game 'not hold your hand' to this level. To be honest, this was a great refresher. It felt much more satisfying to complete a puzzle.
The down side of the game's difficulty comes from the forced sequencing it imposes on some things. To give a basic example of this annoyance: You check a box, and the protagonist says there is nothing important in it. Then you encounter a situation that requires an item X, and then if you happen to click that box again (which is at this point 5 zones back somewhere), the protagonist exclaims: "Oh, look what I have found, item X!" At other times, you need to talk to specific characters to 'advance' the story to be able to use an item on something etc. In other words your character is sort of dumb, and he takes time to realize things that you as the player may already be aware of. This can get mildly frustrating when it costs you hours of head-scratching. And the most annoying thing of all is having to 'spend time'. A few times in the game you have to wait for something to occur and you are expected to walk around to spend time. But if you have got nothing to do then it just becomes a chore of clicking through zones for five straight minutes to progress time (which is arbitrary so you have to keep going back to check).
All that being said, the game really does require one to consult a guide/walkthrough every so often to avoid these maddening moments. If you can somehow pace yourself and not overdo the guides etc. the game is very enjoyable and satisfying to progress through. But going in completely guideless would be absolute madness even for a seasoned adventure gamer - trust me! There is bound to be that illogical sequencing or single-pixel item somewhere that will prevent your progress several times.
The unforgiving part of the game is that you can die. There is no warning for this and no take-backs, you just die, and need to open up a manual save that hopefully you had! (First time this happened I had not saved for over an hour). This can be remedied by saving the game whenever you enter a brand new zone.

(Türkçe) Evet Black Mirror gerçekten kategorize etmesi zor, oldukça değişik bir oyun tecrübesi sunuyor. Standart P&C oyunlara gore cok acımasız, her an hata yapıp ölebilirsiniz.
