This game is so broken.
In the Saga gameplay there is a wolf encounter you can randomly get that will guarantee your entire posse dies. It may get better at higher levels, but so far I've never had a new game that I didn't run into this encounter early on. Other than never running into the random encounter squares, I see no way around complete death. But if you don't try the random encounters you don't get as many rewards. This one encounter is a game breaking mechanic that makes everything you do in the game worthless.
Oh, yeah. Wolves can open doors.
Line of sight works in favor of the enemies. You can be in range of an enemy, but can't fire on it, yet it can fire on you with no problem. There is a symbol that indicates you can fire from a square you've selected that works most of the time, but 10% of the time it just doesn't.
80% chance to hit really means 80% chance to miss.
Very nice game which takes a bit getting used to.
The cover system is pretty good and if you like the western setting you're in for a treat.
Play the storylines first because the saga is pretty hard, especially in the beginning.
This is a fun game. It scratches two itches for me: western theme and turned-based tactics. Pros: based on historic characters, not a walk in the park, theme, strategy, character skills, takes up limited hard-drive space. Cons: graphics could be better, no voiceovers, screen angles are limited, doesn't have scroll-over stats for characters, hard to tell which bad guy's health is which without clicking on them. Overall, this game is solid and worth the purchase if you pick it up on sale.
I bought this game as it looked like fun and when you first begin playing, it is! I chose the beginner really easy level because I wanted to learn the game, things were going great, my characters were progressing and I was researching fine. But the game / PC does not like to lose and soon enough you either get several high level 'regulators' come after you, or the opposing Clan turn up with two level ten and three level 5 or 7. Which you just cannot win against because you have not had enough development time. So you save and begin again and it just keep happening. Really sad.
Normally we start with what we liked about the games we play. Normally. But beyond the excited rush it gave us to have a turn-based western RPG come out, we were left wet and miserable,
This litter box needs to be changed, and now. Character development is limited to a this or that selection tier, and weapons and gear are locked in. If your a knife person, you stay a knife person. no guns for you. Want to have 2 guns, no no, just one for you. Not even a selection of weapons in your area to choose from. Pretty much you just upgrade the one you have. Maps are repetitive and combat simple and not enjoyable after the first few fights. We felt like we were just doing the same thing over and over. Story was ok but nothing special and graphics were not up to modern levels. Its like someone offering you string to chase when you know they could have brought a little pole with sparkly catnip filled toys on the end of it. And the wait. We waited a long, long time for this to be released, and remained supportive. It feels like they just put out a sub par product to shut everyone up about when it would finally be release.
Over all a 3 out of 10 for us. Playable, yes. Worth the money, hardly. Sorry but two tails up and a walk away view of our behinds from us for The Feud.
A reluctant thumbs up (now altered). I have only done 6 hours and I am nearly at the end of the first story but it is enough to warn people. Get this on sale and a good sale at that. I think the game is great but it isnt finished it is not polished and there are too many bugs to enjoy 100%. The main issues already are slowness of the game with all the pointless diaglogue, poor camera operation and slow panning to the next fighter. Moreso, however is the very poor positioning of your squad. If I click on a square which puts me in cover I expect the game to put the person where I clicked. It doesnt, 1 in 10 which is rising as I go on, my character stops one short so he is not in cover and gets blasted by the enemy. This happens every scenario and is getting very tiresome and ruins the game as I am too angry to get the enjoyment. I have even clicked on the space next to me to put me in cover and it has moved the character forward and back tothe same spot so still not in cover. Also in the last scenario I had three characters all occupying the same space (bizarre) and finally after the last scenario I am trying to equip items and when I try to move them they disappeared. Really, a finished game???? Such a shame because overall this looks like it should be really good.
Update from yesterday the game has become unplayable because of the lack of accuracy with movement played one of the end scenarios for the Hatfields where surrounded and every turn it comes up short for the cover. what a useless waste of a game.
Has chance to be good game but not at moment - has the same issues as XCOM. Too many misses at 95% for my cowboys and enemy hit me half way across the map when i in cover - its just silly and forces the rage quit too much - hope it improves.
There's a good game buried in here somewhere. The easiest level for Saga (which should be a learning level where you have to try to lose) is so difficult I'm constantly wiped out. Once this game is patched or cheat codes are released it could be a lot of fun. Right now it's the equivalent of telling your girlfriend she looks fat in those pants. Even so, I like the game overall if the difficulty could be tweaked it would go from a good game to a great one.
I really wanted to like this game: XCOM in a western theme-thumbs up.

I could go on and on but the bottom line is I've tried to give the game a fair shake even playing through 4 time and each time the results are the same-early success followed by being steamrolled by characters 3 to 4 levels above you even though you were having early success.
If you were looking for a game that gave you the excitement that XCOM gave you, sadly this is not it it.
I'd pay $5 for this-no more.
This is my first review despite 50 games on steam so you know how much this game disappoints.
My Favorite "Western" Turn Based Tactical is Hard West , so I was overjoyed at discovering this game, so far im 4 chapters in for the first story campaign, enjoying it alot ! Fun game so far ! Will update after I get a deeper into it.
Update I have taken a break from the story mode, and am now getting into Saga mode, at this time Saga mode is probably my favorite mode. The town management is not overwhelming , and I like shopping for hired guns , exploring the map and the battles . The random events you encounter are not forced on you, you can bypass them if you dont feel your posse is ready for it , and come back later . Dealing with other settlements/ gangs is challenging, so you do have to eventually pay more attention to your towns defenses. I am really enjoying the game and I can still recommend it .
Got to admit, this game really surprised me. After playing all the excellent Desperados series games, I often looked for something to scratch that particular itch again but never came across anything close to it, until I came across this gem. There's far too much here to go into detail so in a nutshell; XCOM meets the Wild West, if you can get past the dated graphics you'll find a brilliant 4X-style game with near endless replayability, surprisingly hardcore difficulty and satisfying combat.
This is a game I truly want to like, but just can't recommend it. I love TBS and the western theme. The graphics are decent for the genre but character customization needs major improvement and character creation needs to be a thing.
The battles are repetitive and another reviewer mentioned that the missions all come down to kill the other side. They do. No matter what the mission says, you'll be killing your way to victory.
The XCOM influence is apparent but just not up to par. If you want a good western TBS, go look at Hard West. Way better.
In it's current state there is no way I'd recommend it for $30. I regret the $21 I paid. It's a good buy at under $10.
For those into Strategy Games, or Tactics games, or both - this game does not disappoint!
Set in a western theme (which is a nice breath of fresh air for turn based 4X Strategy games) You take control of an old west faction and battle it out on a world map, capturing territory, resources, researching tech, and finding new friends along the way. It's also one of those games that's easy to "get in the zone" while playing, where you look up "moments later" and hours have gone by.
Highly recommend this game to anyone who's into Turn Based Strategy games - I think you will find the complexity of the cover system and combat system in general; very refreshing.
Just getting into the Unlimited Frontier Content update - can't wait to start a new Saga campaign!

X-COM meets the "Old West". Campaign plus skirmish mode (which I like), with XP added for the dozen or so main characters, which transfers to next skirmish. Pretty good little turn-based game, fun, but well overpriced for what it is. I got it on sale at US $20 or so, but really should have waited for a bigger sale, say US $8-10 at most. If you see it on sale for a few bucks, and like turn-based combat, grab it! :-)
Overall a great idea. Fun to play. Average graphics - but good enough to get the job done. The theme is awesome - Wild West empire building and character development.
I hope the developers continue to develop the game further.
For example the "Western Saga" 4x style empire builder could have a choice of from two to four players (player vs 1 AI up to player vs 3 AI) rather than limiting to four players only. Also there could be a garrison approach to adding town defenders - in any town, mine or farm defending garrisons could be purchased and assets made formidable from AI attacks if enough money is invested in defence - allowing the player's posses to go on the offensive more.
There could be a customization feature to create your own heroes. This could include equipping them with weapons to suit your play style.
There could be the "shootout" skirmish option where two large posses (size customizable up to 8, 10, 12 etc) can fight over a random map - choose terrain type (town, desert, forest, etc). Or there could be a large reinforcement pool and maximum number of fighters on each side at a given time (for example, a pool of 50 on each side and as one fighter dies a replacement spawns until one side has killed all of the opponent's reinforcements - this is how Battlefront plays out).
Plenty of options for further development.
Adding voices would add more colour to the game.
However the game deserves two thumbs up already - money well spent!
A good if slightly clunky Turn-Based Tactical game. It is fun enough for the cost, but lacks many things that would make this a truly worthy title.
Comparisons to X-COM (and the like) are fair only in that it is a Turn-Based game. The story, graphics, and overall feel of The Feud is far below what I would consider an independent title. It has the look and feel of a one-man creation in an old version of Unity. The User Interface (UI) could use a plethora of quality of life improvements, as it is far too burdensome to use.
I know all of this sounds negative, and here I am recommending this game. Well, it is an okay game. A solid 5 of 10 star title. Small things like Voice Actors, sound effects, a completely revamped UI and a story where you feel that your decisions have a point... or, in this case, any decisions at all.
The setting of the West Virginia/Kentucky border during the late 1800's has it's appeal, but for this game it is the main selling point. Overall, I rate this a solid, "Meh."
This is a great new turn based game, set in Kentucky in the 1800's, a pretty rare situation.
Ignore the other reviews about this game being too tough. The game was quickly patched after release. It is still hard but after the patch the new normal can be won without save scumming. You will need to win 50+ battles and kill 100's of enemies to win the Saga normal game. You will have losses and defeats but you can tough it out and win.
If you really need it there is an easy mode but normal makes for a better game if you have any experience with turn based games. There is also hardcore and other tougher modes to suit your skill level.
Things happen slowly on the main map as your posse travels at horse back speed. Over time you need to find better gear, improve your hero and hired hand skills and recruit better hired hands and horses. You will need to occupy towns and mines etc in order to boost your income to pay for everything.
You can research many changes to the game but one of the most important is extra hired hands join your posse for battles in your own territory. Having 6 guys versus say 4 for the enemy is a huge advantage for you. All research is expensive in resources and often competes directly with your need for cash for new hired hands.
Characters come with quirks and perks. Some of your hired hands would rather get drunk than fight. Higher quality hired hands have more perks and fewer quirks. Character progression is slow. Even a level 10 character is still just a guy/gal with a gun or a knife. He may have slightly better accuracy or a little more health but can still die quite easily if you are careless.
In battle be prepared to either flank your enemies that are in cover or overpower them with superior firepower or rush them. Long range one-on-one shooting matches are to be avoided as you will lose half the time. The AI is pretty good at flanking and surprising you. Badly injured hired hands need to be pulled back before they die as replacing them costs precious cash. Unless they suffered a severe injury they will be at 100% health for the next battle if they survive the current battle.
Unlike many other turn based games, terrain and cover are very important here. Cover behind high rocks is a lot better than cover behind an evergreen tree. Of course some cover obscures your visibility as well. You can peek around cover to see and shoot. There is over watch in the game called lookout. Shooting in lookout has penalties to accuracy and damage as the enemy is moving. If you put your posse in good cover with long range guns the AI is smart enough to wait for you to come to them. Rarely are there time limits and even then there is time to easily accomplish the goal if you try. I never liked the scripted XCom 2 battles with only 6 turns to turn off 3 bombs.
Lots of maps, some in the wilderness and some in towns with buildings with doors and windows to shoot from cover. Randomized starting positions and playing the many maps in different directions means high replay value.
Overall a great new fun game. Give it a 2 hour try at least if you are into turn based games.
A western style strategy game sounds great in concept and I was so excited for this game. Unfortunately this one misses the mark.
Firstly, the gameplay suffers from many other XCOM-like games in that it gets very bland very quickly, and while XCOM has some variety to its missions, The Feud's missions are essentially all "Kill all enemies". Even in the missions where you have to collect something, the maps are so small that you can't avoid having to kill all enemies before you can get to the targets. There's no stealth either, so its usually just a free-for-all from start to finish.
The character designs were good, but it just lacked variety. Some, like Kate, had abilities that control the battlefield, but most others' abilities are just different ways of shooting the enemy. There's no customisation involved either; your riflemen will be riflemen throughout the game.
As for the story mode, the game likes to stack the odds against you, and although it is satisfying to beat the odds, it relies HEAVILY on RNG. A critical hit by an enemy can turn any well-laid plan on its head, and sometimes a guy with a knife tanks 8 shots to stab one of your ppl to death. Again, maps are small so there's not much variety in how you can approach the mission. Sometimes you just have to do it again and hope for the best.
However, the RNG gameplay would have been manageable (XCOM, one of my favorite games, had times like this as well), if not for the inability to save in battle. When you start a mission, which could take between 30 to 60 minutes, you're committed to finishing it, no matter what happens, even if your power cuts out. Fair enough? Well, then there's the technical issues. What triggered me to write this review was that, when I was in the final mission having killed the boss and surrounded the one remaining enemy, the game just froze. No autosave, no way of continuing where I left off. It took 3 tries to get to that point (again i needed luck), now I have to restart the entire battle.
The Western Saga mode was also something I was looking forward to, thinking it was an overarching strategy game, but unfortunately it felt more like an afterthought that was added on to the Story Mode. The missions were largely the same, and the feeling of ALWAYS being outgunned is even worse. While you start at level one with 3 hired guns, the AI starts with several level 3-5 mooks and for some reason, they'll have more goons than you. This means you will almost ALWAYS lose encounters with the AI, even at the lowest difficulty. Again, it seems they don't want to make things easy, but it feels like playing chess against an opponent who already replaced their pawns with queens.
Overall, this is a heavily flawed game that feels very rushed, and you wonder if they had done any testing at all before putting it out. But this game (and I hope, this series) has a lot of potential if things get cleaned up a bit.

Let us begin with the pros:
The Game-play: Its actually quite fun, I am not a huge fan of the turn based shooter but I gave it a shot, and damn did I
have fun. I am new player to this kind of genre. Not once did I struggle to understand the game mechanics and in fact I picked it up rather quickly, the strategy is what really hooked me into the game. The AI are always trying to out flank you, or does their best to force you out of your position to expose you. I like that, since it gives me several options and strategies to out outmanoeuvred them / take them out. Its not difficult but its not a walk in the park either.
The Story: So far the story isn't Taratino or Clint Eastwood good, but it works well enough for the game-play. You are constantly fighting in a new locations with different types of covers. The characters are interesting enough for you to want to level them up and give them the best stats possible.
Sounds: The sound is pretty good, not amazing but again does the job right. This is more of a personal opinion but I'd like them to have more of a punch. It uses a lot of the same sounds repeatedly and some diverse gun shots for the weapons would be amazing. Other than that, the footsteps and the cracking of the snow, branches sound quite realistic.
NO BUGS: Pretty self-explanatory. No audio bugs, no falling through the floor, no missing textures, little to no clipping through objects. So far so good.

Now with the Cons:
The Graphics: Look I know that this does not define the game, however its always the icing of the cake!
Its 2020 and at this point having higher resolution models as well as textures is expected. I do understand that this is an indie game however with the talent put into the other things, I have no doubt they can achieve this, so let's see.
( But please, don't turn yourself away from this game because of this, the game play does make it up.)
However its always a big plus.
No Voice acting!: WHAT!? The characters are interesting, with cool designs and they don't have voices, its all silent, which really saddened me. Not even a light grunt or emotion. I hope in the future they can add some voice actors to give them more life.
The text when they 'speak' moves to quickly, especially when the dialog is long, sometimes I don't have enough time to read it all!

First impressions: Nice graphics, music and sound effects but the aspect ratio makes me believe this game was developed for tablets; even at full screen setting it does populate my widescreen monitor. This often causes some of the dialogue to be cut and with the lack of voices during cut scenes can often cause you to miss certain words.
Although the character sprites are well designed, the lack of actual customization will limit player involvement. Special skills and abilities level up as per usual with branching choices. Cover system is as per for this type of TBS game but with four levels of cover instead of just two. (ie. quarter shield to full instead of half/full) So far enemy AI isn't too challenging for anyone with years of experience playing these games.
Overall, enjoyable and pleasing to have another Western TBS game and would be a good intro the genre.
