Love it!!
Buy it!
Hearing "gunship" may make you think of AC-130s and all but no you don't use those in this game, you use helicopters. There is a few different ones including a Russian helicopter and there's like 4 campaings. American, German, British and Russian. The game is old, controls are weird like I have to press left mouse button which lets me actually control the helicopter but sometimes it doesn't work and I need to press the right mouse button then the left mouse button again its janky, its old.
+Doesn't look too bad, its great that there are 4 campaings and 4 helicopters to use.
-Its old so the controls are janky, the sound effects are not that good, the training missions make my game crash and its surprisingly very low FPS. Idk why my PC has a hard time running it but its probably because its an old game.
Its the classic experience you get with really old games. I got it in a bundle with a bunch of other very old Microprose sim games. I don't think the bundle exists anymore but honestly you're not missing anything.
Played it for nostalgia: it was my first videogame and of course it felt awesome back then. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else though, the controls are frustratingly bad even for an early 2000 game, at least with mouse and keyboard. I just wish there were similar games for current gen consoles, the multiplayer would be epic.
The fanta-political premise of the game has almost become prophetic as of 2022...
I actually have about 20 hours logged in the game. I loved this one back in the day, but the hassle of having to get a 3rd party plugin just to make it playable is a bit much. Without the plugin, you are absolutely FORCED to use a very SPECIFIC joystick, a Microsoft FlightStick Pro, from cerca 1999. I still have mine and it works, but I very much doubt anyone has the dongle to convert it from an ancient pin-socket to USB. I do not recommend soley on the joystick requirement, Steam should have placed a "Know Before You Buy" label about that.
If you have a joystick that will run with this or know how to emulate your inputs, its an absolute gem of the late 90s. Otherwise, its one I hate to say is best left in the museums.
Great Vintage Game. However buy it for $5 from GOG.com. MUCH more stable and runs at 1600 X 900 @32bit amazingly!! Even the Map key works without crashing the game.
After playing gunship 2000, I had to give this game a downvote.
This game is just an inferior version of gunship 2000 except the graphics.
Gunship 2000 offers more various helicopters, controls are much better and easy to understand, and making waypoints are simple and easy unlike this confusing mess.
Just download amiga, DOS, or the PS1 port of gunship 2000. Gunship 2000 also offers randomly generated missions like roguelike games today, so replay value is almost infinity.
Wow... CPU with 8 cores (16 threads), 32 GB RAM.... and the game still stutters like hell...
Additionally: The game only starts when you run the game as an administrator.
I had 'Gunship' once on an old Atari ST and even that was much faster, smoother than that crap.
Completely dissappointed.
Not playable at all.
Waste of money, even the 6 Euros I payed.
I had to start the game now again, although I don't want to play the game again, because I can only release a review after playing the game for 5 minutes....
So far I had only 4 minutes.. because it's so bad.....really bad.....
I am a massive fan of the original Gunship on the C64, I must have played it for weeks, so I was very excited to play this. Sadly, despite a promising start (the menus talk about support for HOTAS) you can only run the game in Software Rendering mode which forces a resoltuion of 640x480. If you try and run in Hardware it crashes immediately when you click on "Take Off". You could argue that 640x480 is still higher resolution than the C64...but it's the fact that the game offers up to "1920x1080" and I can't help but feel cheated being forced to play in such low-res.
great game after installing the files from the ms folder into the game map like how its said in the discussion forum here.
For anyone having issues with old games like these on modern systems (including mechwarrior 3) try dgVooDoo. It's a simple process and it has my Gunship! running at 1600x900 with no graphical issues on Windows 10. If you can't figure out the instructions send me a message and I will give you a step-by-step on using dgVooDoo

Great game EVEN IN 2022.... after reading several forums posts u get it to work fairly easy.
Its 2022 i have gtx 1080ti and win 11 x64 - no compatibility mode, no launch options changed :-) , and still works great back in time i tried it with win 10 and it works great too. Runs in 1920x1080 32bit and ultrawide 3440x1440 32 bit color mode.
Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog does not work, unfortunately.
Initial problems with hardware mode was that steam doesnt support dx7 anymore, although game is optimized for it, ironic isnt it ? Follow these steps to enyoy full hd resolution if you get error:
DX7 Application Error
Error destroying D3D objects
hr: DDERR_GENERIC
i am quoting steam user that helped me:

I was getting the same error message,I just figured it out for WinXP64, might work for XP32 too. Download DGVOODOO2 version 2.52 Extract the MS folder from dgvoodoo2 2.52 to your gunship folder. On XP64 it's Program Filesx64/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Gunship Then open dxwnd.ini and change ver0=7 to ver0=8 I have two Nividia cards so it worked in nvidia for me in the game settings, you'll have to try the different settings, or maybe ATI shows up in your game settings I don't know. Let me know if that works for you, good luck!

vodoo stuff that you probably need:

I used to play this game years ago and loved it. Unfortunatly it does not run well on modern hardware.
Game is very unstable in Windows 10 and crashes frequently even when ran in compatability mode.
ifyou get the game patched up and add in some of the mod stuff out there, it is pretty good actually - its graphics are still superb and the in game sounds and variety of missions are great, there are alot of custom made missions out on th eweb too and even some landscape mods - like Time of Sand Beta
Ahh, Gunship!, so many childhood memories are locked in this game.
So many failed attempts to fly and subsequently crash into the ground too...
Man I wish I still had my old Joystick so I could experience being 6 again...
The controls are not explained at all, but after about 10 minutes of pressing buttons everything came back to me. And as far as graphics go, I must say this game has aged well, it's not up to par with modern games at all but damn it still looks cool.
Also, as a side note I still have the disc for this game, it doesn't work with newer systems but hey! Still have it!
Now I just need Comanche 4 again and I can die a happy man.
Probably not worth it if you're only interested in the latest and greatest, but a definite must-play if you like this kind of game. Also a definite must-re-buy if you played it in the past. GIVE IN TO YOUR NOSTALGIA, YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO.
I guess that Nostalgia shouldn't be the motivating factor when buying PC games because when they don't work - like this game didn't - you're sure to be disappointed and feel cheated.
This game did not run (read: crashes endlessly) on my Windows 7 PC.
Spend your $7 on a hooker instead of this game, it'll be money better spent.
Great game, brings back lots of memories. Download the modm8 here to fly the AI helicopters and a few more, you need to use wayback machine though: http://www.quantumhammer.com/simwarrior/gunship/utilities/gsmodm8v3.exe
I had a bad start after installing and couldnt get the game to run until I set the exe file to "run as administrator" But after that it was ok, I also had to increase the graphic settings as the default settings seem to be on super low, the game runs well and the gameplay is great.
I hope an instruction manual is going to be introduced as the tutorial only covers the bare minimum, ( Im still trying to work out how to use Chaff and flares), I suggest tapping keys in game to access some nifty features, I used the F4 view and tapped "e" and "r" to change the camera views.
Great game but not enough info provided :)
Update regarding the manual, I basically google for one and found one, there are a few "gunship" games out there so be sure to get the right one :)
A fun memory into the good ol' days of my com64c. Crashes petty often on win 8.1 system that has all the bells and whistles.
If you like the old Gunship franchise, this may be for you. If you do not own a joystick, get one. Or get stuck in the gunners seat giving directions to the pilot where to go. Store page really should get the key reference card from "Replacementdocs" (see forum) since there are plenty of them and keys are not bound to normal ones, i.e. i expected Map to be on M (Mike) not on N (november). I do not get the "Gunship feeling" from this game, its more a feeling of "Havoc" or "A10 tank buster", even if it says that Microprose published it. Unlike what IGN said, you can get realism in flight by changing flightmode to - realistic (Duuh).
So - should you buy it? Why not, chopper sims are not that common - and this is one of the better ones.
This game was a wonderful surprise!!!!!! For a game that came out around 2000 (or so) it still has a lot of WOW to it. Thre graphics are a bit dated but the immersion factor is definitely there!!!!........being of the old school (the early years of PC flight simulator games) this is a big plus for me. I have windows 7 (64 bit) with an average computer system and the game runs perfect....no problems what so ever.
Okay,
First things first. Gunship! is NOT a new game. As a matter of fact, it's so old that most young gamers probably never heard of it. But, that's not as bad as it sounds, because Gunship! is a good game.
It's not perfect on all fronts, but the fact that you can play this in Co-Op is awesome. (Pilot/Gunner)
Yes, I know, the store page doesn't mention it, but it has multiplayer Co-Op support.
If you experience any problems with the multiplayer part you might want to start a single player game first. (You had to do that all the time, prior to hosting a session) That's what worked back then.
