Boring. Cookie-cutter puzzles. Story even worse than average for the genre. Creepy gnomes. Creepy Furby-like collectable critters. Just no.
Nearwood - Collector's Edition is FRAG (fragmanted hidden object game), adventure, point & click puzzle game.
Plot summary - Your name is Jane Lockwood, you have been living with your aunt almost your whole life, until one day your aunt passes away. You soon reveal the truth behind your Lockwood family, including your mom and dad. You travel to your family's old home in the woods and meet fantasy creature called Fey in there. He tells you that there is something horrible happening in the other world behind the mirror called Nearwood. Nearwood is filled with all sorts of fantasy creatures all cutesy and lovely, gnomes and mermaids for example. There's also a timekeepers, who keep the time running nice and smoothly in the lock tower, but some time ago Jane's father messed up with the time and freed ancient old evil from it's grave. Jane's mission is to help restore the Nearwoods peace and find her parents.
Extra chapter summary - You need to travel to the fantasy world of Nearwood again, Fay has asked your help with a monster who freezes everything to a snow and ice even tho Nearwood has always been summery warm place.
I really liked the plot. Even though the base lane of the plot wasn't anything special (beat the bad guy, restore peace.), it was executed nicely. Characters were decently interesting and even when there was predictable plot twists and ending, it wasn't deadly boring. I watched all the cut scenes and discussions without even wanting to skip.
What comes to the artwork it was amazing, if you have enjoyed My Brother Rabbit, i think you going to like this. It's so colorful, fantasy themed and resembles some old dreamy children's books. Game otherwise don't resemble My brother rabbit tho, so don't misunderstand me. Music and sound ambience was quite fitting and decent, if i'm being honest i didn't paid that much attention to music while playing so can't really say much other than that i know it wasn't repetitive or annoying, since i didn't make any noticeable remarks. There was decent amount of voice acting and it was surprisingly well executed. Sometimes you get hit and misses in games like these and not so funny scenes turn to amusing ones, because voice acting is so bad, but i'd say this game it was pretty good.
Game mechanics were great, didn't encounter any glitches, typos, bugs or anything else that would interfere with the game play. Playing itself was somewhat easy, getting forward in the game was pretty easy, but i'd say some of the puzzles took me a little longer than usual. So the game wasn't just mindless clicking and end. There was decent amount of HO scenes, variations to them and they weren't repetitive. Have to say that there was boss fights, which aren't really common in games like these, even though i have seen them few times. Also got have to say that there wasn't free use of fast travel and you needed to wait some time to it recharge, which is somewhat unusual in this genres game. Usually you can just travel whenever you want without waiting. You can also collect cute little creatures to unlock pages from the storybook, which i thought was nice addition.
I would say this game is good to all ages, but i don't think that smallest kids let's say under 10 would get the puzzles without any help. Plot wise this game could be suitable for kids, it didn't contain any gore or nightmare material. Maybe together with a parent so they could help with the harder puzzles?
I like that there is extra chapter after completing the main plot and extra content in the lobby, but this game does not have steam achievements to unlock. I personally like to play complete games to my profile, so it's kind of a bummer when i play games that doesn't offer the opportunity to raise my achievements.
Summary from review and price - If you like fantasy themed point & click games and you like the artwork of My brother rabbit, i would recommend this game. Price isn't something out of this world, but i still would wait it come to a sale since the game itself doesn't that long to play and games like these often are played only once, since there ain't anything new if you would play it again.
Pros
• Beautiful artwork
• Decent plot line
• Extra content & chapter
• Variety of puzzles
Cons
• No steam achievements
• Price
• Maybe not suitable to younger kids due to puzzle difficulty

A beautiful HOG =)
The story is good, the world design is amazing and the puzzles are fun to solve :3
This is a real hidden gem, and I'm glad I was asked to play it, or I wouldn't have discovered it. Nearwood has everything you need in a hidden object game: a good story, a beautiful soundtrack, and gorgeous artwork. The story is about Jane, whose mother died mysteriously, and then his father disappeared. She grew up with her aunt, who later asked her to go to her parent's old house to discover a great family secret. The journey is very nice and entertaining.

I can't get past the artwork's beauty, details, and color scheme; all of them are outstanding. The voiceovers are excellent, too. This game didn't fail with its soundtrack as well. I'm glad we could listen to them in the extras section once you finish the main game.

The hidden object scenes are few, and this game plays more like an adventure than a regular HOG. However, it is still fun, as there are varieties of puzzles to enjoy. Some of them are tricky and require good thinking to solve. The characters' styles are cute, and the whole game's art looks like a fairy tale. The collectible creatures are so adorable; they are called Snoop-Sees; when you collect three of them, you'll unlock a page of their Snoopedia to read their journey.

There is no journal, but the fast-traveling map is handy, showing you where the objectives are. However, you can't just fast-travel randomly because it has a cooldown, like a hint button.
Pros:
+Beautiful detailed artwork and locations.
+Good story.
+Beautiful soundtracks.
+Variety of puzzles.
+Good hidden objects scenes but few.
+In-game strategy guide.
+Collectables (Each three will unlock a page of the Snoopedia)
+Bonus Chapter.
Cons
-No journal.
-No Steam achievements.
I could play the game again; it was so entertaining and beautiful. Pick up this one if you are looking for a relaxing game with gorgeous artwork and soundtracks.

Good game. Pretty decent VO.
It is a cute hidden object game, would be nicer if had achievements other than just collect little critters, mini games are not extremely challenging which i like. I would play more from this company if like this game.
I bought this game on sale, and it is a nice little logical, point and click/hidden object game, with some reasonably challenging puzzles. The graphics are lovely, but the story is similar to other games that I've played. There are more puzzles than hidden object screens, which I prefer. It took me 9 hours roughly to complete, but I did choose to skip one rather infuriating, but well thought out, puzzle. A very enjoyable few hours.
This game is great! A fantastic little world with plenty of interesting puzzles and gorgeous visuals. I got very invested in playing through this game and thoroughly enjoyed it every step of the way. This game is absolutely stunning and varies its puzzles enough that it never gets tedious or boring. I finished in about 3.5 hours, but I could see it taking 4 or 5. This is absolutely worth your money.
It was alright. I rather enjoyed the art and the SnoopSee book was interesting, though I was just short of finishing it by the end of the bonus. I would have liked a brief thing where Jane explains to her friend what happened, though I might have clicked through it accidently. The voice acting for the enemy in the bonus was pretty good. Was a fine game, my friends and I had fun.
I LOVE this game! Very well made with a great story line, beautiful music, and keeps you hooked from beginning to end! I wish there were more like this one.
Excellent game! Great voicing, incredible graphics, neat story, and really nice puzzles - some were quite challenging. Long load times is the only downside, and this game is totally worth it. Where's the sequel?
Good but not extraordinary.
I can recommend this game with a couple of caveats.
The biggest indignation that makes me not want to recommend this game is the separate fetch quest that not only between the main game and the bonus chapter but also has no way of going back to once either part is completed. The nitpick I have is the weird faux 3D animations on the NPCs.
Other than that, the game is good. It doesn't suffer from the same problems some rubbish HO/PNC games on Steam have like bad translations, moon logic or straight-up bugs.
The story is okay (though cheesy) and the graphics and voice acting are good.
It's also a decent length, so I'd happily spend $10+ on it. $20 if it weren't for the fetch quest problem.
Plus, it comes with the usual CE features which are neat.
Well, all I can say is it was a visually attractive game and collecting the little animals was fun but, afraid to say, I was bored! Having to wait whilst the transportation button charged was time consuming and never seen before on the many HOG games I've played. I skipped nearly all the cut scenes as they were tedious and the main point of the dialogue was repeated in short at the end of it. I was even too disinterested to play the bonus game. A real disappointment.
Nearwood is an endearing HOPA with lush visuals that draws you into its imaginary world.
Jane Lockwood has returned to her old familial home under a mysterious summons to finally resolve the truth of her parents disappearance. Transported to a magical world she must outwit an ancient force to return time to its normal passage.

Narrative
Nearwood is fairly simple in scope. Unlike similar tales of crossing into fantasy lands, Jane is limited in her exploration and never quite faces the dire situations that a certain Jane, Peter, Edmund and Lucy face for instance. The primary issue here is not the techniques of storytelling within the game but a lack of tension and suspense. Jane has already been living as an orphan for many years and despite her desire to help the adorably cute inhabitants of the land, she risks nothing. She can still return to the normal world, her parents have already been lost and she is already independent. This lack of tension leads to one tepid scenario after the other.
Characterization is limited and marked primarily through the artistic design of the sprites. Many of the roles here are stereotypical… and only The Evil itself and Fey (your gnomish assistant) transcend this and relegate more to archetypal characteristics.
The other concern around the characterization here is the complete helplessness of the characters. They are utterly incompetent and unable to help themselves. Request after request you resolve for them, and I personally became frustrated at their seeming lack of agency. Other games resolved this dilemma by showing the character busy with another task whilst you assist them with it but here they are completely idle. I found myself feeling resentful when each quest was resolved and they offered another even though pursuing their silly errands was, ultimately what drove the plot forward.
So this was an issue as well, what should have been side-quests were actually the main quest, or linked to a resolution in the main quest. Whilst doing this can create more cohesion in a game and provide more motivation to complete side quests, here I felt forced into completing aimless errands that didn’t really convey the primary story. It’s storytelling at its most frustrating.
Gameplay
Nearwood is a tight and solid experience in the gameplay department. It works incredibly well with the mouse, and despite some puzzles and minigames being clearly designed for a touchscreen they still worked well with the PC control scheme.
While playing HoS the mouse is responsive and even if I slightly misclicked near an object it would still note it as selected. Whilst this does make gameplay easier it is far better than the frustration of clicking an object only to not have it register.
Movement through the world is smooth and the scenes transition quickly whether you switch from an exploration area to area or switch to a puzzle or HOS.
The world itself slowly expands as you advance through the story, and gated areas provide a compelling reason to figure out how to bypass them to see the next area. Another refreshing change was the fact that once unlocked; all areas can be returned to. This helped make the world feel more expansive than if they had limited areas of exploration at various points of the game. A map is available to return to areas, and whilst the game does have some backtracking, it never felt too repetitive and was definitely alleviated by the gorgeous scenery.
The collectible items here are Snoop-sees, strange Totoro like creatures that inhabit the world in a productive and mischievous way. What I enjoyed about them as rather than merely unlocking an achievement (which this game doesn’t have) They unlock a small additional fairytale like story in a book. This actual reward of content within the game itself that enhanced the lore was a welcome inclusion.
Graphics
Visual are were Nearwood excels. They are lush and effervescent, teeming with a pastel colour palette that is as soothing as the casual gameplay.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1480802005
The environmental backdrops convey an idea of distance, hinting at future areas to discover. The openness of the horizons in many scenes give an idea of expansiveness, that there is more to explore, which is one of the finest reasons to play a fantasy game… simply the curiosity of exploring the new and unknown territories that await. Environments do vary from mushroom filled caverns to floating islands the game runs through a gamut of areas to explore.
The creature designs are excellent as well. Bizarre and strange conglomerations of beasts; they are alleviated from scariness with their childish proportions and enlarged eyes. Their appeal lies in their cuteness. And this lack of threat they embody assists the idea of a temperate and serene environment distorted and twisted by the malevolent evil.

Sound and Music
Soft orchestral arrangements that are melodic and dreamlike accompany your exploration of the game. Woodwinds provide the base accompanied by the shinier higher tones of harps or xylophones that add a magical expression to the earthen tones. There’s a traditional folk music appeal that enhances the quaintness of the world. The songs are short though, weighing in at about 1:30 each which can become repetitive, however the game is quick enough that it shouln’t be too much of an irritation.
Conclusion
Nearwood is an endearing fairytale world. It showcases the inventiveness and creativity that makes fantasy such an appealing genre. Despite being simplistic in execution, its high production values make it a charming experience that is well worth a purchase if you enjoy the fantasy genre or HOPA games.
Terrible | Bad | Poor | Mediocre | Great | Superb
A delightful game which I completed in 6 hours on normal mode. Graphics were gorgeous and it was a wonderful world to play in. This is how I imagine a fairy land to be!! Music was good and so was the voice acting. HO scenes were easy and limited. Some of the puzzles were quite hard, but I used the guide to get through by cheating! You are supposed to find all these little creatures to open up their storybook. I found 100 and still didn't complete their story!
This game is suitable for children who will need guidance. Even the opening titles are lovely. Watch as you glide along the river, go over a waterfall and into a desert. I give it 8 out of 10 as a lot of care was put into this.
This one was fun!
As far as hidden object games go this one was quite a pleasure to play. Recently i haven't really been feeling the long and time consuming games, yet this one is somewhere around the middle. It wasn't too long and it wasn't too short. I managed to get around 4 and a half hours of play time out of it. Including the bonus chapter at the end.
The story is decent, i particularly like the fantasy type world you stumble into. It's nothing too enthralling but it's definitely a decent play and helps it stand out slightly from all the other HOGs.
I've been playing quite a few recently and this is one of the better ones i think.
The item finding itself is a little odd in this one. It's not the usual 'list' kind of thing. It was more so shorter item-finding scenes where you are looking for ten or so outlined shapes rather then a long list of named objects. It's something a little different I guess but i found it quite odd.
It also doesn't feel like there is actually many item-finding scenes in this game. In ways i liked it, they focused a tad more on the story and i guess it's always good that the game isn't entirely dependent on that factor of the game. But i personally would have enjoyed it a little more if they were a little more frequent. As i quite like the item-finding side to HOGs.
The voicing acting, art and puzzles are all pretty standard as far as HOGs go really. As in, the voice acting is always that tad bit cheesy, the art is always quite nice and the puzzles are always fairly similar.
None the less, i enjoyed it. As these kind of games are great for few hour time killers.
When it comes to this genre of game, i think all positive reviews tend to be very similar. It's just usually the bad ones that differentiate and usually for good reason.
For a HOG to be bad they must be really bad.
*Cough* Amazing Adventures Around The World *Cough*
Excuse me.
All in all, this is another decent hidden object game for the collection, i'd definitely recommend this one.
TL;DR : Another decent HOG, pretty standard but stands out a little from the rest with it's fantasy setting.
Just a quick question first...
Have you ever combed a giant snail?!
If I had to pick a single word for the game it would be 'CUTE'. Like extremely, very-very much so.
- The puzzles are numerous and varied, a solid mix of classics along with some fresh and interesting designs. Some are casual, some are harder than most, but each one can be skipped.
- The visuals are...It's just...well, you do have the eyes + all those screenshots, don't you?
- The voice-acting is surprisingly good for it's genre\price.
- The story is there for you. Not something too originall may be, but satisfying nontheless.
- It has the Snoopseees!..:P So much loving and effort for the simple (and optional) 'spot-them-all' mini-game? Thank you, devs!
Game Information
"Nearwood" Collector's Edition is a Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure game. The game was developed by MagicIndie and published by Viva Media.
Since this is a collector's edition, it comes with extra features that are not available in its' counterpart; the standard edition.
The Game Review
Game Visuals
I want to mention that the visuals in the game are nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game's option menu.
Game Audio
I want to mention that audio for the game is well done. Even though the audio is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. The audio can be adjusted in the game's option menu as well.
Gameplay
There are three different difficulty game modes to choose from: Casual; Normal and Expert.
The notebook keeps track of progression in the game. Such as story events and clues.
There is an interactive map in the game. It allows the player to fast travel between each location quickly without having the need to constantly backtrack. It also indicates that there are a variety of tasks that can be completed at various locations within the game. The interactive map is automatically given at the start of the game.
There is a padlock feature that is available to lock the inventory in place to make it stationary.
There are some interactive items in the game. Some of the interactive items may require extra components before they can be interacted with. All interactive items are marked with a symbol in one of the corners.
The hidden object scenes consist of the following: Fragmented items; Reverse Objects. Fragmented items are several small pieces of an object that makes up a whole. Reverse objects are placing items back into the hidden object scenes. Some of these hidden object scenes may require little or no interactions.
The puzzles are fairly easy to solve without having the need to skip any of them.
There is a collectible in the game: A creature called Snoop-Sees. They are scattered throughout the game for the player to find.
Since this is a collector's edition, there is a bonus chapter, but it can be accessed only after the main story is completed.
Miscellaneous
The extra content features: Bonus Chapter; Concept Art; Soundtrack; Wallpaper and Game's Strategy Guide. Most of these extra features can be accessed only after the entire is completed.
Final thoughts: I have found the game enjoyable to a certain extent. The replay value for the game is low. I would recommend this game, but not at the game's full price value.
I must admit, this is my first Hidden Object / Adventure Game I've ever played, so I really have nothing to compare my experience with it. However, reviews should never be in comparison to other Games, but purely on the enjoyment that one recieves from playing it.
The Voice Acting was well done, the Art Style and Music is just beautiful, and the Story was interesting enough to keep me intrigued. The puzzles and Hidden Objects I found were basic enough to not get stuck on, although I did have to search up the Constellation Puzzle.
My only problem I found, was I got lost a lot going from Screen to Screen. After an hour I just used the Hint Button to help me Navigate back to Area's of Interest, which eliminated my frustration of wandering around endlessly.
The Collector's Edition comes with the Soundtrack which you can Download to your PC through the Game [not sure if this was only accessible after completion], A Bonus Level to add onto the Gameplay, an extra activity through the Game to collect critters which unlock Pages in the Snoopedia, and also Desktop Wallpapers, which on my 1920x1080 Resolution weren't all that crisp.

One of the better Hidden Object games. Lots of content, some good puzzles, and an immersive fantasy atmosphere, which is important to get you invested.
Definitely recommended.
Now before I begin this, I want you to know that I've played around 20 hidden object games in the last couple months so I am well versed in this genre.
Nearwood blew me away. It is one of the most visually stunning hidden object games out there. I was excited everytime I accessed a new area - every scene is beautiful. The characters and creatures look great. Some of the animals are the cutest I've seen. Voice acting is better than average for this genre. The music is lovely AND you have access to all the songs since this is the collector's edition. The puzzles range from very easy to "ack, this is hurting my brain" but you can skip any of them, if you so desire. The length of Nearwood, especially with the bonus game, is longer than most hidden object games. And there is a very cool "boss battle" that most puzzle games lack. I do have to warn you, the hidden object aspect of the game is limited and when you hit them, you're only searching for specific item parts. However, the game is SO good that the lack of "normal" hidden object areas didn't bother me in the least. I really could go on and on about how much I enjoyed playing this. I'll just finish with - I highly recommend it. :)
A cute adventure game with pretty pastel scenes reminiscent of a Thomas Kincaid painting. Fantasy atmosphere. I wouldn't call this a hidden object game but more a lite adventure There are not any traditional hidden object scenes, but there are a few mini-games where you need to find 10 pieces of pipe (or whatever) in a background. Most of the gameplay is going around trying to find objects that unlock functions on things that allow you to get other objects, like a standard adventure game.
The bonus chapter is along the same vein as the main story. There are no replayable scenes as extras.
This game is a series of puzzles ranging from simple to MENSA level mind breakingly challenging. With such excellent visuals no puzzle gaming fan should be dissuaded by this. There is a guide to help if you get stuck, or just skip the puzzle. The only puzzle that seemed to be guesswork was the seasons puzzle shown in the screenshot, there is a shoe, and an umbrella, I guess those are only needed during certain seasons?
(For summer, the shoe coulda been a flip-flop. While for Fall, the umbrella coulda been anything like a pile of leaves. What is that umbrella even for in the fall?)
While solving puzzles be on the look out for little creatures that tell their own bonus story in the snoopedia of the hard life of living in a fantasy paradise. We need more games on this level of awesome, to appeal to the masses those puzzles need to be toned down to more human levels outside the realm of needing to be an Einstein. Noone wants to bring shame and dishonor upon their family by resorting to the use of the *gulp* skip button on a clever puzzle.
Loses one point because you cant replay the game with the same profile, you have to delete your profile or create a new one to play it again losing your snoopedia progress. Don't know what a snoopedia is? Then you havent even lived!
Rating: 9/10 Value: $9.99
i really enjoyed this game. it is a favoriite in my household. we enjoy it a lot.
i'd give it a 8/10 (if they fix the glitches maybe a 10/10)
Pros:
it has many other games/puzzles in it besides the story's "hidden object" challanges, beauiful music (includes OST for download), wallpapers, concept art, and the graphics are divine (very bright and festive).
Cons:
voice acting...is...over the top sometimes. some of the puzzles make 0 sense and glitch often on certain ones (thank God for the SKIP option played on casual mode). there is a major LAG towards the end of the Bonus Game (which is a SHORT sequal btw)...that is a bit of a let down too.
the story is lacking in some departments but this is not an epic hardcore rpg either. this is a casual point and click hidden object game. (with prettier graphics and fantastic soundtrack.)
if you're into this type of game then by all means buy it :D but if you're looking for something in higher standards i'd say still give it a go but wait for it to go on sale.
i'm glad i bought this game. ive beaten it twice already. it never gets old. takes about 3hrs to beat (depending on your personal play speed).
