I have mixed feelings about this game.
First off, as a game on its own, it's good! Pretty backgrounds, great music, improved graphics on people in comparison to the first game, you have a "show me all items" key, you can skip those horrendous slider puzzles now, there's an intriguing mystery you want to solve - it is a competent game. And if that's all you want, you'll enjoy this one.
However, I don't know if it's a good sequel.
You can tell it was written and developed by a different company. It has a much less eerie, gothic vibe, it uses a few cheap jumpscares and shock value instead of building up an uncomfortable atmosphere, almost every single character is a massive a-hole (yes, even the main character), and it annoys me that it changes details from the first game to make its own story work.
Of course, it is lovely to return to locations you saw in "Black Mirror" (and explore new angles of them) and reunite with familiar faces - after finishing two tedious chapters first, mind you - but the locations' layouts were changed and likable characters corrupted.
Also the plot's expansion makes the story from the first game unnecessarily more complicated and convoluted.
And be aware: this one abruptly ends on a cliffhanger! You need to buy "Black Mirror III" if you want to find out the conclusion!
If there was a yellow sideway thumb, I'd use it for "Black Mirror II" but since there's no such thing and I still enjoyed parts of it, I'd recommend it.
If it's on sale.
This review does have potential spoilers, especially if you didn't play the first game.
I do highly suggest playing the series in order for this game to make sense. Though if you don't want to play the first game there's plenty of stories and explanation of what happened in BM1 in this game.
BUT- still a good idea to start with BM1.
I guess after multiple replays and almost 50 hours I forgot to review this game.
I will warn, that if you play with "Advanced Graphics on" you'll get some graphical bugs mainly with character movements but it is nothing game breaking.
This game also handles being minimized very well.
There are a couple of plot holes in this game that are answered at the beginning of BM3.
This game is decently long, and honestly very well done. Can easily get 10+ hours of gameplay. I've replayed the game about 6 times now so I can beat the game in about 7 hours.
It's a very beautifully crafted game especially with the graphics, and yes when it comes to Darren he just might need some getting used to.
I like the whole series but this one is my favorite. It is also one of my favorite all time P&C games- being on my top 5.
I will say that this game does steer more away from the creepy atmosphere and story of the first game. It's still a very dark game with hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.
This game is about Darren
and the Gordon curse being passed on after Samuel from BM1.This game is more of a twist and this plays more as a build up for Darrens story and the continuation into BM3.
Darren is from Boston, which plays into him having a Boston accent but it can sound almost forced(?) so to speak and can be a bit irritating at times. I originally wasn't fond of his voice acting but it grew on me as the game went on.
He is very cocky, sarcastic, rebellious, and can be really annoying, but he's not that bad. Especially in the third game.
He just takes some time to get used to really. Even I didn't like him at first, but he's a good character.
As for the game itself, the story is good, and as I said above it's more of a build up of Darren's story and a continuation of the Gordon curse from the first game. It's done very well, and this game is quite the ride but is still a great addition to the series. But the 'original' curse story line does pick up more toward the end and into the third game.
This game does suffer a bit from moments where the music is loud and you can barely hear characters speak. There are a lot of obnoxious moments in the game but it's still a good game.
The ending is decently paced and doesn't end as 'abruptly' as some people say. There's a lot of steps to do what you need to do, but then you pick it up where you left off in BM3.
Everything about this game is good, even great for the most part, the story, the sounds/atmospheric sounds, the music, the story, and the characters.
I highly recommend this series.
Black Mirror II had big shoes to fill as the sequel to the original adventure. With a different developer the game took a new approach—modernized visuals, fresh characters, and a setting that gradually ties back to the chilling mystery of the first game.
While some of the animations feel a bit silly, the game still manages to build an eerie atmosphere. And despite its slower pace, some of the death scenarios genuinely caught me off guard(actually making me jump more than once).
From a gameplay perspective, Black Mirror II refines the point-and-click mechanics with quality-of-life features. The ability to highlight all interactive objects makes puzzle-solving more accessible, and the option to double click at the corner of the screen makes walking through sections of the game faster, saving time without breaking immersion.
It may not perfectly recapture the original’s magic of Black Mirror I but it is still an interesting continuation of the story and a solid point-and-click horror experience.
Picks up somewhat later in the game, but utterly lacks the haunted grace and uncanny charm of its predecessor.
The inner mind of some teenie bopping college kid (Darren) is just less interesting than that of the stuffy, cursed, aristocrat, Samuel Gordon, of Black Mirror I.
It's not a bad game, but if I really wanted bad graphics, unlikable characters, and mediocre dialogue I could walk down my own town street. Worth playing perhaps to get to Black Mirror III.
Good
*** PLEASE BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY, This was the PERFECT Game of all time ever! EVERYTHING fit into place perfectly! You never wondered if something would combine, fit or trigger the next part of the puzzle. There were all the elements of a true amazing adventure game. There was a detective angle to it as well. The story was excellent. The characters were terrific. And the locations were super duper COZY!!! EVERYTHING kept making sense as you went along. Like a great movie or novel, you couldn't wait to see what would happen next. There were tons of objects, conversations and things to do. It felt non linear at times which is a very good thing. If I were forced to complain there were a couple of puzzles that didn't make total sense and there were a couple of very small times when you had to backtrack slightly hence the dreaded how would I ever know to go back there?! Lastly there were a couple of times when you clicked on an object but couldn't interact with it - YET, then you'd go back only to use it. But in those few rare instances, he would usually make a comment about it. Towards the beginning you got to bang around a viillage, the next part send you to another village and hotel, then it got a bit puzzley which was fun and a bit much at times, then it went back to a mansion. The locations varied and made it an increditble, amazing game!! So please grab a bowl of soup , cup of coffee or hot chockies and snuggle up with a warm cuddley blanket and your favorite pet and PLAY THIS GAME RIGHT NOW! It's very very long too. I've played hundreds of games and if I had to pick just one, this would be it!!!
Black mirror I was a GREAT game. Good history, atmospheric, good characters. The devs forgot about all that in this game. The main character is a pain in the xxxxx, with his stupid remarks all the time, the story is just stupid, the way it's told is laughable...And I'm not even gonna comment on the animations, and the music and speech volume...
Some nice puzzles, that's all. DON'T play this one...
I really enjoyed the game - most of the puzzles could be solved logically if you paid attention to what was said and to your surroundings - I played the easy mode just in case I'd want to skip a puzzle, but they were all doable
it is a little gory, so be warned if you are squeamish, there are murders and multiple deaths for the protagonist - save often!
all in all a fun game, though - I highly recommend it - for me, Black Mirror III awaits :)
Black Mirror II, builds on its predecessor in every way. It continues the story of the haunted castle known as Black Mirror, but from the next generation. Some characters from the first game return, but having aged significantly. Many loose narrative ends are tied up quite eloquently, and we revisit many of our beloved locations: Willow Creek, Black Mirror, Wales.
The graphics and art style are gorgeous (sort of reminds me of LiS, but it predates it by over a decade). Compared to the first game, this one is much smoother, no bugs/glitches etc. And it retains the good parts of the first too: the puzzles are still high quality, the difficulty is quite sharp (something good), and the story is riveting. I have not yet played the third title, but these first two games have one of the most compelling 'haunted castle / hereditary curse / occultism' story arc I've seen in a long while. Most modern P&C games do not have such a complex and well written story.
[Süper oyun, ilkinden her açıdan daha iyi (ki o da baya güzeldi.)]
just started and the first thing I noticed is they didn't learn much from the previous title's mistakes. Apart from a new, obtuse interface that reinvents point-and-click needlessly, every time I inspect anything there's a lengthy explanations during which the cursor is deactivated and I cannot look around for points of interest? I mean.. really? Still keen on wasting players time and implementing unnecessarily frustrating controls, I see.
NEVER
TAKE
CONTROL
AWAY
FROM
PLAYER
WHEN
IT'S NOT
NECESSARY
Is that too hard of a rule to understand? Why do these devs feel the need of reinventing the wheel each time, and fail to make it round? Just use the same point-and-click interface that's been around since the advent of graphics.
Actually a really great adventure game and story. Would recommend.
This is the fourth adventure game I've played after Syberia, Syberia 2 and Black Mirror 1, and I can say that it's been a long time since I was dragged into a game -or immersed in other words- such as this. I open it planning to play one or two hours, but I find myself wanting to keep going. Then, eventually it ended, and I wished it didn't. The first game in the series, Black Mirror I was also a great one, and I loved it a lot, but honestly, it did not grab me like this one did.
Amazing music and ambience, and love the voice overs too. I can see myself re-playing this every once in a while, when I'm in Black Mirror mood.
