Salt and Sanctuary seamlessly combines fast, brutal, and complex 2D combat with richly developed RPG mechanics. Discover, craft, and upgrade over 600 weapons, armor pieces, spells, and items as you explore a cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, desecrated monuments, and the fallen lords they once celebrated.
From Ska Studios, the award-winning indie studio behind a long list of stylistic, visceral, and brutally executed action titles that includes The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, and Charlie Murder, comes Salt and Sanctuary, the studio’s most ambitious title to date.

Most atrocious level design I have seen in the last decade of gaming. Also, some of the worst bosses I have ever seen in gaming, such as Tree of Men.
While the premise of the game sounds cool (2D Dark Souls), it fails to understand that thoughtlessly copying 1:1 designs and entire mechanics from Dark Souls does not mean they will work as successfully in a 2D world.
As if that was not enough, the game balance is out of whack, even on the enhanced mode of combat, which supposedly was released to help with balancing the game. 2-handed ultra class weapons, having the same or almost the same attack speed as small weapons, while dealing 3-4 times more damage and having triple the reach is absolutely something that should not exist in a game such as this.
Finally, the game cannot decide if it wants to be Dark Souls, Castlevania or Hollow Knight, and thus, it fails at getting close to any of them. So, just go play any of those!
this is the closet metroidvania to soulslike i have played, i love the combat and the atmosphere of the game. there are some bosses that are wacky but overall the game is lit!
This game is the soulslike most directly similar to dark souls 1 that I have played. It is the mechanics/inventory/logic of dark souls translated 1 to 1 in a 2D metroidvania. It also has more modern conventions that give it some better QOL than dark souls, like earlier better fast travel, seamless perfectly implemented co op, a skill tree instead of a DS1's level up system. The co op is the main pull for me with this game as I am always looking for RPGs or complex games that have "perfect" local co op, meaning a complex game where both players can do everything, and this game fits the bill 100%.
I am playing the game in full co op and it is perfectly implemented. Both players make a character and then one invites the other to their world. Both players can level up, change inventory, buy upgrades, get items etc. If the host dies the co op partner can keep playing and there is no resummoning nonsense. This system can definitely be exploited to make the game easier and it is really fun.
Ranged and magic builds seem 100% viable and more accessible than dark souls. I think they are especially good in co op where 1 player plays traditional melee and tanks, and then the other puts out ranged DPS. This makes bosses a lot easier and is a good way to go if either player is not good at soulslike combat.
The 1 to 1 with dark souls also means there are familiar dark souls frustrations that may turn people off. The runbacks and bonfire placement are probably the worst part of the game and what will turn people off the most. There are much less bonfires like in DS1 so you often have to do runbacks to bosses. There is one section earlier in the game where you have to do a runback through what is effectively a poison swamp w/archers, and then complete a simple timed platforming segment. If I was playing single player I might have quit the game at this section. The game is also very dark and grey and it is sometimes very difficult to see enemies and trap, especially on your first run through an area.
I have only played a little bit of the game so far, (defeated first 2 bosses) but I think I can 100% recommend as a fun co op experience. If you are only playing single player I think the game would be much more frustrating and difficult and you should probably have some soulslike exp already.
A difficult and frustrating experience that is far more trouble than it is worth. The combat is unsatisfying at its best and nonsensical and unintuitive at its worst. I am 2 bosses in (fought 4) and cannot say I have had "fun" at any point. Most enemies are entirely too easy or insufferably annoying. Visibility is terrible and enemies have the ability to spawn out of the ground with no warning and attack immediately. In my nearly 2 hours of playing, falling to my death has accounted for 90% of my deaths. For some reason, the devs decided that lots of platforming in a game with a single jump and slow movement while bats and archers antagonize you constantly would be an interesting and fun challenge.
I get the sense that fast and light characters are the only ones that this game was designed for. My sword and board character swung far too slow and at seemingly random intervals. If an enemy attack hit, it always stunned me and stopped my attack. Perhaps heavier armor would stop this, but I did not have the patience to find out. Faster attacks would give the player and actual chance to hit and probably more opportunities to dodge at a reasonable time. Presumably it would help a lot with the platforming too.
I really wanted to like this game. I know this is a small indie dev team and not a lot can be expected, but I simply cannot recommend this game for anything less than free.
when the salt is stored in a sanctuary, i gotta make sacrifice to get it.
Would've been so much more enjoyable if they had added a map, but still, this feels like a lesser version of DS1&HollowKnight, and that is actually a compliment.
Many people call it a "2D Dark Souls," and it truly feels like Dark Souls has been directly translated into 2D. On the downside, the 2D world makes navigating the world and its map design much more intricate than expected. On the upside, it's impossible not to have fun.
2D 다크소울.
Extremely junky (platforming), simple "metroidvania" with combat focus. Satisfying gameplay, even with some weird balance decisions (Bitch of the Lake took me around 50 tries, while final boss took me 3 tries). Playable in 2025 only if you like games like this and know what to expect.
I wrote this review a few times in a few levels of tilt because damn it, you were so close. It's frustrating how much I want to like this game, but I just hate so many of your systems here. Enemies being able to auto tackle me with some Street Fighter II CPU levels of BS? Every attack having hit priority on me no matter how I build? Flying enemies being able to just pass through my character even though I can't pass through enemies? Blind falls? Mega Man II disappearing platform segments? Full on "we're so troll lol hweh hweh" traps at the end of platforming puzzles? Getting rag dolled if you dare to jump, but having no payoff for the risk? Broseph, this shit isn't endearing, it's annoying. I realize you've made other games (even another game in this series), but it makes me so effing mad how close you got to a legitimately good game. The vibe is great, I love the art, but the game itself is kind of miserable, and not in a "hit me harder, daddy" way like I normally enjoy.
It's a solid game made by two people that is more in depth than many AAA titles I've played. It's Dark Souls in Metroidvania form, and it is executed beautifully. Wife and I have been playing this game for years and we can't get enough.
twas a magnificent game. there was a calling... i answered.
2D Metroidvania with Souls-like elements. Stats, gear, and skill tree take a little getting used to but again, it's a souls-like. Fun game.
Perfectly Salted
Salt and Sanctuary is an amazing well polished game. Its a metroidvania with more souls-like elements where class, play style and traversal can all be determined by the players decisions.
It wears it strengths and weaknesses like a badge of honor and rightly so. The fish people style of art is unique. The religions and lore are deep and the world is littered with small jokes that use simple in game physics to make you think about combat and game play. Every biome has atleast 1 boss and is hauntingly beautiful and singular in its appeal. The RPG elements are well thought and tested and work perfectly to create fun, active gameplay.
If you want a souls-like metroidvania with fun game play, deep lore for not one but multiple playthroughs, I'd recommend Salt and Sanctuary.
I really like this game. For me, this is the best 2D soulslike like game with its own unique mechanics. Atmosphere also is really tasty. I do not like some platforming levels though. Team should be focusing on building Salt and Sanctuary 2 with not too difficult platforming with more boss designs and area details.
Salt and Sanctuary is sidescrolling platformer. Atmosphere and game world itself is cruel, bleak and desaturated. Players face against plethora of monsters, beasts and undead. Game poses a challenge by making players to learn enemy attack patterns and making jumps between platforms that can get harder than the actual enemies. There are plenty of unique bosses to fight, gear to find and upgrade. Game has plenty of melee weapons to choose from, some ranged weapon options, spells/prayers.
- Monsters are varied and change with each location. Most of the enemies have certain item drop pool and are farmable.
- All bosses have their unique attacks, combat rhythm, strengths and weaknesses.
- Game is hard. Saves are made on death and sanctuaries serve as checkpoints and area reset. It doesn't get much easier with a high level character and good gear but the game doesn't require to play like a pro. Players can take a beating, deal fast and heavy damage, exploit weaknesses and environment, make fool of enemies.
- Combat is mostly fair but enemies can stunlock, traps can push of the ledges.
- Experience is salt, currency - gold.
- Players temporalily lose all their salt upon death. Revives cost a percentage of gold carried at the moment of death. Getting revenge on the killer without dying gives back all the salt previously lost, but dying again - salt is lost permanently.
- Common enemies respawn upon area reset, bosses don't. Game encourages players to farm for salt, gold and items.
- Game indirectly suggests that it is best to spend resources when required ammounts are gathered for level up, upgrading and trading, so that those recourses wouldn't go to waste on death.
- Game world can be difficult to navigate. I would suggest to use fextralife wiki while playing. "Game progress route" in particular.
- Players equipment consist of 4 piece armor set, 4 rings, main and secondary weapon with a charm slot. They can use heals, weapon buffs, throwables, cast spells and prayers to buff themself and deal damage. Most of the gear can be upgraded.
- Heavy armor provides good resistance against physical attacks and stagger, while light armor have better stats against elemental attacks like fireballs, lightning, etc. Shields can block a barrage of elemental projectiles completely if wielders stamina doesn't get depleted to zero.
- There are secret items to find. Some areas need returning to.
- Skill tree is mostly stats and masteries to access higher level items.
- Going above 50 in single stat gives less improvement than before. Respec is available in small quantity of points.
- PVP exist. It can be done by making an offering of Stone Sellsword at the shrine. I have never tried it.
- There are no voice acting. Story is delivered in dialogues and can be ignored if not wanted.
- There are some things sought after by certain players. Most of the common enemies can be pushed of ledges or into traps by running into them. Certain player attack animations can be canceled and skipped. Some item combinations are pretty op (e.g. poison damage and glaives). Far sides of boss areas can be exploited. Monster hits can launch players through climbable platforms.
Game is great. First playthrough with equipped items fully upgraded took 26 hours. Second - 16 hours.
Fantastic early game gives way to just endless horrible programmed platforming. As a huge metroidvania and Dark Souls fan I WANTED to like this, I've tried multiple times to get into it, but it is just held back by a developer who didn't understand that the way they designed (and then heavily relied upon) platforming was BAD. Which explains the lack of success in the sequel, the devs didn't understand what they actually did right.
Very fun game. It has some serious inspirations as a metroidvania and soulslike, but I'd say it's neither in truth.
It's its' own thing, Ska Studios made an amazing game and should be proud.
Mildly janky but ultimately super enjoyable side scrolling metroidvania. Lots of builds, lots of variety, multiple endings and paths through the game. It feels like every build you can make is OP.
The gameplay is hard in the beginning, until you get the hang of the mechanics. The exploration though, that's something else. Crazy huge, you'll very easily get lost and more importantly, the game WILL last you for at least a few dozen hours. The gameplay doesn't push very far, you get to dodge, hit, jump and block, that's about it. Magic is gonna be pretty much the same. This really feels like a dark souls lite.
As a pure action game, it's okay. As an exploration game, it's great. As an adventure game, the dark, gothic, heavy metal atmosphere is incredible, and is something I have never seen anywhere else.
If you like Dark Souls then your gonna like this! It takes a bit to get the ball rolling to steam roll enemies but once it starts it doesn't stop especially if you spec into magic and use the incantation Lightning Storm (you'll stunlock everything)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Somehow the easiest and hardest souls game ive played. S tier.
While this game wasn't exactly what I expected, I’m still giving it a thumbs up. It’s definitely an acquired taste, even if you're a fan of Souls games. I first played it around 4 or 5 years ago, and it just didn’t click with me at the time. Since then, it’s been sitting installed on my PC until now, when I finally decided to give it another chance.
In essence, it’s a more simplified, 2D version of a Dark Souls-style game. Considering it was developed by just a two-person studio, it’s quite impressive.
My biggest issue with the game is the lack of a map, which would make navigation and backtracking much easier. That said, it’s manageable.
it is a good game, but its antiquity denotes certain details that I don't like very much.
This game needs a map, almost every time you dont know where to go and spent a lot of time going around.
The mechanics are simple, i like it, bosses and enemys are very unique.
i would have finished the game if i had some map to locate myself.
definitely a good game, i hope salt and safcrifice fix small mistakes from this game.
Good game, Salt must be gathered, Salt will be lost. 9/10
The whole point of this game appears to be that your character is a disabled imbecile fighting giant demons.
It's a bit dated now; the idea of an indie take on Dark Souls was probably more impressive in 2016 when it was more of a novelty, but Salt And Sanctuary has many areas that don't hold up to modern scrutiny. Stiff animations, bad character design, dim lighting, all things that greatly affect attack readability in a game where any one attack can kill you. An early attempt at Metroidvania map design is admirable, but the lack of a map and the use of repeated hallways makes it easy to get lost in individual zones, even as the overall map size is quite small.
But it nails the emotional appeal of a Souls game; even if bosses are generally easier than they should be, the thrill of killing a tough foe or finding a new area or unlocking some new equipment is still a gratifying feeling. There's some extra RPG leanings, especially in the level-up tree, that really emphasise character creation and make different playstyles viable. Those looking for a new take on Soulsborne should look to Blasphemous, Hollow Knight and Ender Lillies first, but Salt And Sanctuary remains an engaging adventure despite its quibbles.
loveletter to symphony of the night blended with dark souls designs.
thanks for making this game
I'm a huge soulslike fan and a huge metroidvania fan but I just couldn't get into this game. I gave it two separate chances but no bueno. I don't like the art style or the animations at all, the 2D combat is not clicking with me and being constantly killed by traps, ambushes or various other shenanigans doesn't help my mood. I guess if I played it five+ years ago... but I've grown picky after playing masterpieces like Hollow Knight, Ori 2, Grime, Lost Crown and others. Too bad.
A little too difficult for me, personally, but it's very well made with great artwork.
Really good game, however the platforming can get a tad annoying. Its a damn shame the sequel is garbage, dont even bother unless you've always wanted 2D platforming in a Monster Hunter game, with near impossible to read menus. 7.5/10
probably the best and iteration of a 2D dark souls yet
the final sequence of the game was exceptional. the lore, the theme, the atmosphere, the boss' wails of desperation and agony, WHICH BY THE WAY, ARE WAYYYY MORE PROFOUND THAN YOU THINK! you won't fully appreciate the fight if you didn't pay attention to the lore, so make sure to stay attentive!
though i do have some critiques here and there like how you'll very very often find yourself lost wandering round & round looking for where the next area is
but overall, amazing game, 8/10 <3
Souls-like with capturing gameplay and awesome 2D graphics.
There is no better Soulsvania game on the market, and it is arguably a challenger against Fromsoftware - even in 2d format.
Excellent game. Everything you could want in a 2D souls-like. Up to and including fat rolling.
bit late to play this game OMG Im really digging the hell out of this.
Wlways love the art from the dev and hope to see another dishwasher game i cant wait to play Salt and Sacrifice as i got them both
complete waste of money and an absolute pile of shite
Man, what can I honestly saw about this game? It's an absolute masterpiece of a Soulslike! Every boss just feels so well put together when you're an unga bunga greathammer wielding Paladin with the power to bless your weapon with divine strength! Some bosses went down in mere seconds, and other felt so good when you take them down when they can two shot you! This game is something else!! I'm a bit nervous to play Salt and Sacrifice all things considered, but definitely play this game if you're big into the souls combat like I am!!
One of my favourite games ever. The best 2D Side-scrolling RPG ever. It takes heavy inspiration from Dark Souls and it shows, but it's not so much that it's a ripoff. The art is stylistic and interesting (though the art is one thing some people have problem with). The gameplay is fun, the combat is interesting, the progression feels earned and gradual, the plot is interesting but ultimately very piecework, and sound and music and good if a bit odd sometimes.
My biggest gripe is that there is no online multiplayer and that magic is effectively unusable on mouse and keyboard due to direction casting using the direction keys rather than the mouse (seems like an easy fix but whatever) so I just didn't play any ranged styles while I didn't own a gamepad.
Has some fun little sequence breaks too. It's challenging but not too challenging although after the third or forth boss I never had to retry any bosses save for the witch and last boss, they still felt well designed and difficult.
10/10 - game so good I wish I had more of it.
Solid game overall, the art style's kinda uncommon for a dark fantasy type deal but that's what drew me in. Melee combos are fun and the skill tree means you've got leeway in choosing a build, weapons are in no short supply. The boss weapon and upgrade system is also flexible. Very fun to wander into secret areas and the backways into places. Go into it knowing it's a pre-DS3 soulslike and the backtracking/maplessness/slight platforming jank is fine. Difficulty wasn't a problem.
Gameplay's good but but takes a backseat to the atmosphere. Art and design are easily its best aspects - even the areas that are a tad boring or clearly derivative are still cohesive with the whole dreary, waterlogged tone and nice to run around in. The creed system also stands out for how integrated it is into both the gameplay and the world, really cool take on covenants for a single player game and fleshes out the medieval tone so its not just "fantasy but gray." Really like the one track that plays while wandering around but the music is sparse and the boss theme (singular) is unremarkable.
"Unique dark art style indie made by 2 guys" is enough to sell me on anything. Fun time.
I really love this game. But that's also because i grew up on the soulsborne series. I think the difficulty is perfect. Hard for new players but if you know the right weapons it's really easy for veterans. There are some overpowered weapons but they are kind of hidden so i think it's good. The ghraphics aren't THAT good. But for the time it is really good and the ghrapics still aren't bad. I have played this on more platforms than just steam so don't take my time at face value i in reality have about 100 hours atleast. but yes 8/10 would recommend
A great souls like platformer with some challenging levels and bosses. Will be doing a 2nd playthrough for the rest of the achievements. 8/10
Very good game. 2D soulslike in great fashion.
Só me people complain about backtracking, and this game indeed has it. It has Dark Souls 1 vibe, when you are always lost and trying to find where to go. The soundtrack is quite disappointing, as it has nice music, but very repetitive.
The gameplay is awesome, although not in Hollow Knight level. It indeed has more soulslike vibe due to having different builds, weapons and armours.
I didn't find the game too hard, but I concluded it without a guide so I probably missed some extras here.
I would this game a solid 6,5/10, worthy both your time and money, specially for soulslike fans.
This game was played on and Steam Deck.
I really love the game, It's like dark souls combine with Castlevania and it's a masterpiece.
Good mix of Souls and Metroidvania.
If you like one of those genres, you'll probably like this. If you like both of those genres, you definitely will.
All the jank of Dark Souls 1 without much of the charm
MOST ANNOYING SOULS LIKE IVE EVER PLAYED THE GRAB ATTACKS MAKE ME WANT TO KMS BUT PLEASE PLAY IT
It is a game that I haven't play in awhile but has been good going through the game
when going back to it. A Souls-like and Metroidvania game with bosses that are interesting, exciting, and a fair fight.
The soundtrack to fighting all the bosses does sound stale when you traverse going through place
to place finding every boss to wack at.
The story and lore is interesting if you are into looking into the lore.
Tis a good game.
cool kid play this
4/10, gave it several tries, I guess mage just wasn't made well in this game, but that means they lost me, the gameplay isn't interesting enough to make me replay as a melee. game simply seems outdated and I'm not trying to play jank in 2024 I guess, backlog of games is too long to continue giving this a shot.
Has been a good bit of time since I played, but from what I remember this game was really cool. Another must-play if you are into a dark fantasy twist on metroidvanias. Overall my experience was great and linear, but it is important to know I like sticking with melee weapons in these types of games.
Anyways, the pros are quite numerous, but nothing sticks out as absolutely amazing. The music is super cool, but does get a bit repetitive. The guitar riff is great, but like 20 hours of it gets to be a bit much at times. Not bad, though. The story I did not pay too much attention to, but seemed decent. The combat is just like other metroidvanias as far as I am aware, though maybe a bit more dated compared to the newest iterations. Not a problem, though, as I am sure it was great for its time. I just happened to show up late to the party. I do really like the artstyle. It looks soft, but quickly reminds you that it is not soft. Not at all. Lol. Oh and the game never felt unfair to me. That was cool. It is also very affordable.
There are no real major cons or anything that absolutely abhors me or would want me to not recommend this game. Again, it is dated, so the combat is a bit basic and maybe the story is a bit hard to grasp or pay attention to. Then again, it is nothing worse than you would expect from Souls games, where you really have to read the story through external means if you want to be most engaged. I get that vibe from Salt and Sanctuary. One last small thing is I can see it being easy for new players to get lost or forget paths, but it wasn't too much an issue for myself.
But yeah, overall a pretty good game. A good dark-fantasy metroidvania with a neat artstyle and a good guitar riff.
