Very blessed 2003 core
There was indeed some desert and some thunder
Pros:
+Unlimited game time, fuel and ammo.
+Player can destroy terrain objects.
Cons:
-Bad camera design. I have really bad motion sickness in half an hour.
-The design of aiming point is bad too. I can't kill a soldier by using minigun at a distance.
-The first mission is very hard. Too many land mines.
This game is old, yes. It's outdated, yes. But it was also a part of my childhood, and when I saw that it was available on Steam, I had to purchase it. As perhaps the second game I ever played, the first of which was the original DOOM, this game will always have a fond place in my heart.

If all this doesn't work, why do I recommend it?
It's fun at a primitive level, blowing shit up with a tank is innately exciting. While it's not as developed as War Thunder, World of Tanks, Panzer Knights, Gunner HEAT PC, etc... It's honestly mediocre. Considering the game is from 2003 (which is a factor people seem to forget when rating these), don't get your hopes too high. Fairly linear levels, destruction physics that honestly impressed me for a game made nearly 20 years ago, decent enough gun sounds, some enemy variety, interesting levels, and some okay voice acting for the briefing.
This is a game to play to remind you of what just under 20 years ago that games were limited to. Even compare it to World of Tanks original release in 2010, gaming evolved at a staggering rate. This game is for anyone like me that's severely disappointed in the lack of tank sims, this game will satisfy that for about 2 hours. Then you may return to the blank void of unceasing disappointment that tank sims aren't popular enough. I really meant that part about the loader yelling "UP".

A short and delightful little tank simulator that's great if you just want to kill 2-3 hours. It's certainly no War Thunder or any other ultra-realistic tank game, but that's the point. It plays like an arcade game in many ways, with useful armour and ammo pick-ups scattered about the map. The overall feel of the game is also very arcady, especially when you squish terrorists under your treads in a spray of cartoony gore that is way more satisfying than it has any right to be.
Plot-wise the game is basically a rehash of every Middle-Eastern conflict of the last century, with the name itself being a dead giveaway (go read up on operation "Desert Storm" if you have no idea what I'm talking about. To summarise, evil terrorists take over a conveniently oil-rich country, the US/Coalition then invades/liberates the country's population/oil fields from the baddies using obscene amounts of firepower and (presumably) enough beer to drown half the population of Sudan.
You command a top-secret, experimental, super-duper kamehameha Abrams tank prototype with a minigun mounted on its roof and you can switch through a variety of ammunition for both your main cannon and the minigun up top, with my personal favourite being the napalm round, because who doesn't love the smell of war-crimes in the morning?
In terms of graphics and gameplay, the game is nothing to brag about. Average at best, frustrating or downright ugly at worst, but it is also old and was made on what could only have been a very limited budget.
To my infinite surprise, this short, fun title has an equally short yet banging soundtrack, with three or four glorious little heavy metal tunes that really add to the explosive and lightning fast pace of the game.
Desert Thunder is a quick, cheap experience and downright guilty pleasure, just like that time you went to Thailand/Rio de Janeiro and solicited a lady(?) in a shady back-alley for certain...services, but at least with Desert Thunder you will last longer and not run the risk of walking away with various afflictions which you will need a prescription to deal with.
I give it a solid 6.5/10, would invade again. Just buy it when it goes on sale and play it when you just want a quick burst of dopamine.
Putting aside the enemy placement in the game.. This game is one of the worst in giving me motion sickness. It is difficult for me to even reach 3/4 of the level.. if I were to try to play it again, I'd have to reserve more free time so that I can take a breather
Man, such a nostalgia
This game ain't that bad as you could expect. With some improvements it could have been great.
+ The destruction is pretty impressive. You can destroy most buildings and stuff. Falling Towers never gets old.
+ The layout of level design. It's very linear, but it's going all over the place. The caves, tunnels and bridges make you go back under or over the same place. it's kind of fun how it's layed over and under all over the place.
+ Final level was really good.
+ In each level there is a hidden hot dog car, it's kind of a collectable I guess, but if I destroy it, nothing happens.
- The controls are so abysmal. The reversed controls are inverted. The turning is so slow. Also you have free aim, but only 180 degrees, If you want to look at your back you have to rotate the whole tank.
- Camera's horizontal field of view is much higher than vertical field of view.
- Levels feel kind of empty, more destroyable stuff could be added.
- Most of the weapons are useless. All minigun ammo are same, they kill humans, but can't destroy anything else. The emp is the worst, it only slighltly slows down tanks and deal no damage.
- Human enemies don't react to the environments at all, the roof drops on their heads and they're fine.
- It's very repetitive.
- The survival missions. There are 2 survival missions, you have to defend the base for 20 minutes in each. That's a very long time, 5 or 10 minutes would have been more than enough.
- No scope aim?

This looks and feels like a budget title. It's not great, but you're likely to enjoy while it lasts (which isn't long).
This is an arcade action game, not a simulation, as proclaimed in the description.. It reminded me a little of the 2001 remake of Combat, released a couple of years earlier. Whereas that fully embraced its arcade nature, Desert Thunder takes place in a more realistic setting and maintains a SOMEWHAT more realistic feel. I would argue this diminishes replayability and overall fun factor. The games keep things moving pretty fast, slowed down just a lttle so you remember you're controlling a tank.
The story and voice acting are there but nothing special. You drive a lone Abrams battle tank through the desert to defeat terrorists and liberate a country that has a whole heck of a lot of old Soviet tanks at their disposal! Definitely a product of the time it was released (2003). Speaking of which, the graphics are pretty good for 2003. Not AAA-level detail but not at all an eyesore.
Gameplay is easy enough to learn: move with WASD and aim and shoot with the mouse. You have multiple types of ammo for both your main cannon and your machine gun. This adds a little depth, especially in the defense levels, where you have to conserve ammo or risk going to collect more while the enemy besieges your position. You'll mostly use the main cannon, with the machine gun sometimes useful to take out rocket launcher-wielding infantry (or you can just run over them). Most of the scenery can be destroyed, sometimes yielding powerups. Which is great, for those of us who like destruction! Yeah, trees and rocks expode easily when you shoot them. Kinda like Mercs.
The game isn't that hard, except perhaps for two devense levels. There's no major penalty for dying in those levels, and the other levels have a generous scattering of checkpoints. Even the final (and only) boss, with his regenerating health, isn't that hard to dispatch. It's also pretty short, with only EIGHT levels. Given the file size and date, I wonder whether they were trying to cram it all onto a single CD without skimping on the graphics. The last level takes place in a city and is probably the best, with enemies shooting at you from diestructible buildings. It's too bad all the other levels were pretty drab and empty by comparisson.
Desert Thunder wasn't a top game when it came out, and it still isn't today. It's a fun enough, if a little slow, arcade-y game for the 3.5-5 hours it takes to finish it. Maybe I'll come back and play it through again someday. And it's cheap: $2.99 may be a tad much, but you can get it for under $1 on sale. A good enough game for what it is. (But dang, I'd rather play the 2001 Combat, when is that coming out on here??)
For a small sized program and its age and crappy graphics it is still some times fun to play, just as a time waster.
Way better than I expected, if you like the idea of blowing up almost everything with a single tank, then this game may be for you...

A simplistic arcade shooter, pretty redundant from level to level. Still, it's fun for a little while.
It's certainly not worth full price...
It's rare to find a true gem such as the game "Desert Thunder". Released in 2003, this jawdropping Unreal Engine-powered masterpiece boasts unmatched excellence in virtually all categories - graphics, gameplay, soundtrack, story, cinematics - you name it. This is definitely a game that you will not regret buying. It is worth every single penny you could possibly throw at it, and then some. It is quite simply an amazingly unforgettable experience.
The controls are horribly laggy, especially if you're trying to use a mouse. There's no option to invert the mouse, by the way, and the top end resolution on the game well below what a modern monitor can use. All in all, it feels (and looks) like a PS2-era game. It certainly isn't worth more than a dollar, tops, although some modding could help.
