A-Train 9 - Better Than Ever
A-Train 9 has had many major upgrades to the feature set and game play options over the years, with this version, Japan Rail Simulator, being the new pinnacle of the game.
What Is A-Train 9?
The biggest and best city builder, transport simulation game returns with a host of new features.
Drive a train! Actually step inside the cab and take control.
New control options.
Speed restricted track ensure your trains arrive when they are supposed to
Vehicle groups give you the vision you need to control up to 200 trains
New track layout options. The offset X junction, very handy for your marshaling yards and control of the entrance to sprawling muti-platform stations
New road flexibility. City blocks and roads that run at 45 degrees to add greater flexibility to your cities and allow more realistic city-scapes to be built.
With more trains, buildings and track side objects than ever!
What’s New in A-Train 9 V4.0 : Japan Rail Simulator
The new version of A-Train has a stack of new features that focus on the two most important aspects of game play: realism and control.
Enhanced Realism
A-Train is about creating working, profitable cities built around a strong transport network. Over the years we have seen our players create some fantastic cities, the scale and scope of which is staggering.
Whether it is the painstaking re-creation of 100 km² real-life cities, or imaginative sprawling utopias, A-Train has always allowed the player to use their imagination. The latest version increases the scale and scope of the game 100%. Twice as many vehicles can be placed on landscapes with twice as many art assets. More road and track-side features with new levels of flexibility in the way that road and rail are built.
The player can now use these tools to create more realistic and involved cities either from real-life or from their imagination. This extra realism is balanced by some great new control options which work at both the individual vehicle level and the management control level of the game.
Become the Driver
Have you ever wondered what it might be like to actually drive one of your trains? To actually experience the challenges the engineers may face in keeping to the speed limit, providing a comfortable ride, and delivering the goods and passengers on time? Well, in A-Train 9 V4 Japan Rail Simulator, it's now possible to step on the footplate and take control. Either from the first-person engineers point of view, or from a bird’s-eye 3rd person viewpoint, experience your cities like never before.
It’s not just trains. Jump on board a car or boat and see your creations from whole new perspectives. Ever wondered what it would be like to be a citizen or a worker in your city? While now you can find out.
Double the Vehicles
Doubling the number of vehicles in the game adds a massive amount of scope and scale to the game, and that brings with it its own challenges. It might be overwhelming to have 200 trains running simultaneously. Understanding what they are all doing and how to optimize their timetables and routes with so much going on would be a challenge for anyone.
Plan Your Routes
A-Train 9 V4 Japan Rail Simulator adds new features that bring you control from the transport planner level.
It's now possible to sort and filter your vehicles by type and group them into color-coded teams. How you use these features is up to the player. You may want to group your trains by the routes they travel, or perhaps separate them into long distance and commuter trains. It might certainly be a good idea to color code passenger and freight trains separately, but that choice is yours and with the filter and sort options it’s very easy to set up.
The control is there, and the choices are yours. Experiment and develop your own system using the new tools provided, and then see at a glance how your network is operating.
Precise Layout Control
The new version of A-Train offers more control than ever. Track laying has been improved, trains can now have their own custom consist and speed settings, land can be raised and flattened within the game itself (at a cost).
It's your world, creating the perfect rail and road transport system has never been more satisfying.
Assets to Create Realistic Environments
Hundreds of new art assets are included in the game. From roadside elements such as post boxes and bus stands right up to suspension bridges, landmarks airports. You can now create detailed and interesting worlds alive with detail.
Realistic or Model Scaling
Massive areas of land to expand in to. View it all in 4K resolution (with a suitable monitor) and decide whether you want to use the new 1:1 scale modelling in the game which adds a new level of realism. Whether it's the big image or the fine details, A-Train 9 V4 Japan Rail Simulator has scale covered.

Artdink are an extremely bad developer that clearly only cares about its Japanese market, and make zero effort for the English language version. The vast majority of trains are missing, as well as other content that exists in the Japanese version but is stripped out for the English version. From Atrain 9 v3.0, 4.0, and now 5.0, there is very little difference, and as of right now the game struggles to even launch without first lowering all the graphical options to low because Artdink couldn't be bothered future proofing this game despite the fact they just released a DLC for it.
Chances are none of the issues with this game or franchise will ever be resolved, because as I said Artdink have shown time and time again that they simply don't care about the English language version at all. Avoid this game, it has some really nice unique features, but they are buried under a trashy developer.
Great train business sim
If you can get it on sale, get it, fantastic game, just set the graphic settings on low in the launcher config and you are good to go.
Crashes and doesn't work on modern Windows gaming machines even in compatability mode or with settings turned to minimum. Avoid.
VERY steep learning curve in this game. It will be super frustrating at first but once you understand the economics and flow of the game play loop, it can be very rewarding watching your little cities grow. Remember the stock market is your friend, buy anything below $5 hold and watch to sell for quick cash. Build slowly if you try to expand to quickly you will go bankrupt. UI needs improvement and the game can ONLY run with LOW RES textures on a modern PC. The config tool in the launcher is your friend. Also read the manual and watch some you-tube gamer, it will help alot. Good luck and i hope you make your train station of your dreams! Expensive but worth it if you stick with it.
It seems that this Game is abandoned!
Will not run on any PC with Windows 10, crashes to Desktop when trying to load it.
Very poor Graphics having to run it in Low Textures settings.
I can't seem to launch this game at all. It starts up, I get the splash screen and then nothing. There is also little information on the web regarding this. Sadly it's too late for Steam to give me my money back as I have tried that too. I have not played but spent the 5.9 hours the timer says I've played, trying to figure out why it won't load. Don't waste your money or time.
Bought this game back in 2016 and its been a while since I played this game until recently. Its very similar to the Transport Fever/Train Fever games I am used to. That said. This game is all Japanese and it represents the Trains, Trams, Buses, Ships and Trucks. So what's it all about? Well you are put in charge of running the infrastructure to make sure that it earns a profit and that public transport has a sustainable future. Your input very much influences everything from trains running on time and expansion to lines. You can even start from scratch if you want and the game comes with a freeware train pack add-on. Note, if you a Windows 10 user like me, you will need to use the lowest settings otherwise the game will crash on bootup.
Pros:
You can build your transport network from scratch
Design routes and places
Good selection of included trains and vehicles/vessels
The included scenarios/scenes are a good start if you don't like building everything from scratch
Decent BGM music
Good graphics
Cons:
The interface can be awkward to work out at first
No mod support
No Steam Workshop support
No Multiplayer
Prone to crashing in Windows 10
Price is expensive when compared to other Transport Management titles available on Steam.
Overall Rating: 6/10.
It took some effort to get this to run... it would not start for me once installed. The trick was to set textures to low in the config tool as mentioned on some community hub posts.
That wasn't a great experience to start. Even after I got it running the game is not as exciting/interesting as I'd been hoping. It has some sort of interesting looking example cities, but the track setups are all oversimplified (one track per route it looks like, not really even junctions going into stations. So it does not seem much like a real "simulation", more just a simple tycoon game.
It's a good a-train series game. It's the newest for PC on western market at least. It's a shame that We don't have the v 5.0. It has some bugs, but overall It's playable. I recommend to play the A-train PC classic first, It has a lot more depth and a nice tutorial wich applies to these game too. I recommend reading the nice game guide avaible here on Steam community too. It's worth it's price just when on discount.
it takes a bit of time to know what to do in game and how everything works, but after that, you can spend hours and hours in game, for me, its a brilliant game
Edit Two: Lately the game has gone back to being completely unplayable, at this point it no longer launches. Not sure if the issue is caused by a change in Windows or my graphics driver (since the game itself hasn't been updated in quite some time).
Edit: After fiddling with the settings for a considerable amount of time, I was able to find some settings that worked for me (mostly turning the graphics down and a few other tweaks). I've been able to put a lot more time into the game and get some enjoyment out of it, it's a shame the game hasn't received more TLC from the developer, but if you're into transportation centric city building and don't mind a fairly steep learning curve this can be a lot of fun.
Original: I want to love this game so much, but consistent issues with starting the game and issues with crashing while performing certain operations (which I haven't quite pinpointed yet), make this incredibly difficult to enjoy. At one point I was able to get about 3 hours into a build and being immersed and excited that it was finally working, I forgot to save only to have the game crash when I tried to change the height of a track... shame on me, but also incredibly infuriating.
Many others here in the comments and on forums related to this game are saying that the dev abandoned it, which is really unfortunate because it has a lot of potential.
It's not the most intuitive, but if you can spend some time getting into it without it crashing, it really is pretty well done and can be a lot of fun.
The price of this version is almost the same as the ones on the original Japanese shop, while there are far less variety of train in this version.
If you come here after watching these Japanese game streams about this game, then do not expect this one would contain all contents in these videos. The version here only contains the basic trains, not the fancy ones. Also, the develop team had uploaded an updated final version, which is not include in this one. So I will provide the link below if you wanted.
Of course, if you have troubles reading Japanese, then this one is for you. But this one is really pricey, for its content., especially for the audience who are in North America So I hope the price can be reduced, or using the full updated content
Here is the links to the developer's website, which is in Japanese

LOTS OF BUGS. Many startup issues to the point the game has only launched successfully 1 time for me. Going on the forums it appears developer support hasn't responded in ages. The launch bug is a common problem that has been going on for years. On the 1 time it launched there is no support for higher resolution screens so the writing was unreadable it was so small. Really bummed I loved this game back in the 90's!
This game has a lot going for it but ultimately I do not feel like it is worth getting invested in. Why?
* The UI is incredibly clunky. Examples: if you want to demolish something, there's no bulldozing tool, but one removal tool for rail, one for stations, one for buildings, one for roads and so on. If you want to build roads, you first have to click the "Rail" button. Also, good luck figuring out how to operate the scenario editor's Save / Load options without reading the manual first, or trying to create a custom train (something which Transport Tycoon already did way better decades ago). And don't get me started on managing / editing train schedules. I've never seen that handled worse than here.
* The game misses some things which are integral to basically any other game of the transport management genre, like, uh... signals. Don't worry, trains are not going to crash into one another, but unless you meticulously micromanage your trains or give every train its own track, you will have deadlocks everywhere. It's annoying, especially because I actually *want* a complex network, but the tools are just not there unless, again, you are willing to micromanage train arrival / departure times. Even a simple block system could make things a lot easier and prevent trains from meeting in the middle of a single-track section.
* The camera is... ugh.
* The English translation is... ugh.
* The documentation is... ugh. Good luck figuring out what you're actually supposed to do. The underlying economics are basically guesswork, by the way. Also, there are five difficulty levels (from A to E) and even after reading the manual I have no clue what those actually do and which one is supposed to be the easiest.
* There is little to no indication if things are working as intended, or why they aren't. It took me like an hour to figure out that I needed to build a power plant if I wanted to see any city development, because high-voltage lines apparently don't exist in A-Train-Land. In Cities: Skylines (or even back in SimCity 2000), you'd get a clear indication that people are lacking electricity, but here, you are once more on your own.
The sad thing is, if those flaws weren't there, if the learning curve was mitigated a bit (and if maybe the graphics had a bit less fuzziness to them), I could absolutely see this game become the king of the Transport Tycoon genre and one of my favourites. But as it is, it's just breaking my heart a little bit.
I wish I could recommend it - I really do - because I spent hours upon hours building intricate cities and transport networks. However, due to a recent Windows 10 update, this game no longer works on that OS; there is a workaround, but it involves running the game with minimum graphics quality, and this game's visuals were already not its strong suit. Seeing as the community manager no longer works for the developer, and the developers are not responding nor fixing the game, I unfortunately can't recommend it, especially given its high price tag. I've had a good run, but I feel cheated that I can no longer use a game I paid for to its full potential.
EDIT: A workaround has been found and I can play the game with high graphics quality again, but the fact that it was only found months later by a fellow player, with no support nor acknowledgement from the developer, leads me to maintain my negative review. Buyer beware - this is an unsupported product and could very well stop working again at any given time.
EDIT 2: The workaround is no longer working, so the game is now basically impossible to play with high graphics quality on Windows 10. I hate to say this, but stay away from this one. It's dead and gone.
Since the last update, the game crashes during startup on Windows 10. The discussion forums have raised the issues but it seems that the publisher has abandoned the game. Not recommended at this stage.
A-Train 9 V4.0 is not about instant gratification. A-Train 9 V4.0 does not care if you feel daunted or confused. A-Train 9 V4.0 has no time for such trifles as tutorials. A-Train 9 V4.0 makes actual city planners tremble and weep.
And, I love it!
To start, calling A-Train 9 V4.0 a mere rail simulator is like calling a pizza nothing more than a kind of bread. Oh, no no no. AT9v4 is a full on city builder! It focuses around rail transport (be it cargo or passengers). But, soon (very soon!) you will find yourself managing truck routes and distribution centers, setting up passenger bus lines, playing the stock market, and even taking a leisurely cruise around the nearest ocean bay or scenic lake on your yacht.
Never before has learning to juggle been so much fun!
The initial challenge is learning what menus offer which commands. And. there be menus aplenty! Some menus are quite obvious, lining the top and sides, and bottom of the game window. Other menus are only found by clicking on various vehicles, buildings, and intersections. Yes, I said intersections. Did you know you can change the stoplight settings for each individual intersection? Well, you can. Because, all those menus equal player control. And, AT9v4 seeks to give the player as much control as possible.
It does take some time to get used to using all that control. Setting up train speeds and truck routes and laying out rail lines and roads and setting up factories and telling everything where to go and when can be a lot to churn through. Oh, yeah, this is all while trying to remember to buy low and sell high on the markets and make sure there are enough power stations to keep the lights on and making sure supplies are evenly distributed sufficiently so that all your cities and towns and villages and suburbs have the resources they need to go about building and whatnot.
Yes, by the way, your virtural AT9v4 denizens will grab available supplies and build up the city organically and on their own, in addition to the buildings you place yourself.
Does it all take time to become familiar with? Yes, quite a bit. Can it feel a bit overwhelming at first? Meh, only about as much as getting a 747 off the ground with no prior flight experience. But, once you sort it out (there are plenty of helpful videos online!), is it rewarding? Absolutely!
Hands down, this is one of my favorite simulation games ever. Period. Whether I want to strive ever onward towards a grand, profitable, and aestehtically amazing metropolis, or if I just want to sit back and take a leisurely ride on one my trains watching the scenery pass by, AT9v4 pretty much does it all.
PROS:
- Unparalleled levels of player control.
- Great attention to detail (watching the little tiny brake lights light up on the little tiny trucks always makes me smile).
- Very accurate Japanese theme.
- Infinitely customizable maps.
- Many ways to approach and play the game (just play it in map creation mode if you don't want to worry about resources, for example).
- Interconnected systems that work dynamically together (rail, road, manufacturing, etc.).
- Good environmental effects.
- Automatic, organic growth of population and structures.
CONS:
- Steep learning curve.
- Will require a pretty solid PC rig to get the most out the game.
- Lack of tutorials or in-depth, in-game explanations for the many features (there is an online instruction manual that will launch in your browser).
Like in City Skylines I'm rubbish at economics and making a profit but A-Train seems even harder to make money. So I stuck it in sandbox mode and just practiced building and making timetables and routes and I've never played it as a serious game since.
That's not to say it's not a great game. If you are like me and just enjoy planning and construction and making pretty cities and watching them grow then its the best game going.
I set a big map, started in the middle and worked my way out. It's now months old and the map is almost full.
It's a great way to relax for an hour, working on lines and routes and watching it grow.
It would be nice if saved maps synced with your other devices. I play both on the PC and on my laptop and I have to copy the saves across if I want to work on a map on another device.
Apart from that it's a great game and one I will be playing a long long time.
The gameplay, apart from being translated, is left untouched, so the experience is still authentic. Recommended for those who cannot read Japanese and can care less about the missing trains in this release to play this game.
Just keep in mind that many JR trains, amongst more from private Japanese railway companies, are not available in the international release due to potentially inhibiting licensing fees and/or reasons undisclosed by the publisher of the International Release.
On the other hand, for those who can actually read Japanese, know Japan enough to lust for the missing trains, and has enough knowledge to buy the download store version from the ARTDINK online store, BY ALL MEANS GO THERE INSTEAD. More trains are available there and trains from JR Central can be added via the JR Central Addon Pack.
IF THERE'S A SALE, BUY IT; OTHERWISE, NO.
Usually Steam (and all other overseas) versions differ from the original by that train sets are heavily confined, while I think about 2/3 of the game's price depends on that very thing.
The Steam release of V4 worths more than its predecessors by including a few Japanese trains, but I'd say $25 to $30 is all it deserves. I paid just $19.99 at a Steam Sale. Good luck!
I finally took a dive into the manuals to figure this game out. Now that I have played a bit more I continue to find gems in the game that make it shine. That full price is scary and hope that changes but the game does have a lot to offer from transportation to city building to watching it snow in the winter. Here is my first look into the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr2N1upflHk
