Описание

Judgement Silversword is the winner of the "WonderWitch" 2001 game development contest, and was originally released in 2004. Designed for the WonderSwan Color, Judgement Silversword has the unique distinction of being one of the few shooting games designed for a handheld console, and it's also one of the best! Destroying enemies as quickly as possible is essential to scoring in Judgement Silversword, giving the game a ruthless tempo. One of indie developer M-KAI's first games, it can be seen as the inspiration and predecessor to the gameplay ideas in Eschatos.

Cardinal Sins puts an interesting twist on shoot 'em up gameplay with a score trial marathon spanning 7 different areas, each with a unique objective themed around the 7 Deadly Sins. Collect lives in Sloth, Hoard enemy data in Greed, and avoid Destruction at the hands of Wrath. Mastering the different objectives gives the game a great sense of variety. Getting an S rank in every trial is very challenging!

Key Features:
  • Two different games! Includes both Judgement Silversword and it's sequel, Cardinal Sins.
  • Relentless shmup gameplay. Use your three weapons efficiently to rack up a high multiplier. However, your multiplier will drop quickly, so wipe out the enemies as fast as you can!
  • Varied challenges and a deep scoring system create strong replay value.
  • A faithful port of hard-to-find WonderSwan Color games.
  • See where the legend began! Play the games that inspired Eschatos.
  • Steam achievements are supported.

I just barely recommend this one. If I could, I would give this a mixed review. Judgement Silversword has a lot of trial and error moments. As a result of this, it starts out quite frustrating but gradually gets more fun with practice. Luckily, this one is quite cheap price-wise, so buy this if you're really itching to add another shmup to you're collection. I strongly advise that you play this with the double shot mod. It is the definitive way to experience this game.
The following guide explains how you can set it up (I did NOT make this guide):

Judegement Silversword is a 1990s inspired retro vertical scrolling shooter. The game is on the simpler (but not easy) side with a focused shot, spread shot and forward shield. The game play is very fast with the exception of what I assume is manufactured slow-down when the game uncommonly becomes more like a bullet hell.

Judgement Silversword is not an easy game, even on easy. Stages are short but plentiful. More like waves, as each stage has set of enemy ships that the player needs to adapt tactics to deal with. Despite the speed of the game, I don't believe it is a reflex shooter. I believe the name of the game is dispatching enemies as quickly and efficiently as possible to prevent them from firing back at you too much forcing your route or employing your shield. Even the shield, which drains down its energy, doesn't feel like a worthwhile venture as it only blocks forward and prevents shooting. Even losing ship often puts the player on the road to force them to recover as the enemy has time to fill the field with bullets and temporary invincibility may not last long enough to correct it. Fortunately, the stages are pretty fast to get you back on track. As well as extends (extra ships) being plentiful (at least on Easy). Continues are in limited supply. So don't expect to credit feed your way to the end.

Additionally, the game features a sort of caravan mode called, "Cardinal Sins". Which has its stages roughly based on the 7 Deadly Sins. These stages start out pretty easy (for Judgement Silversword), but quickly become difficult as each stage requires differing skills of the player from holding fire to recover extends, collecting drops and sometimes just surviving. Many stages taking some practice just to not fail outright. Let alone getting a poor final grade.

Judgement Silversword is closer to the shmups I like. No fancy gimmick or complex mechanics. Just a couple of fire modes and your movement. Its a little fast (the slow-mo areas not withstanding) for my tastes, but as mentioned above; I think the game rewards a solid tactical plan over quick reflexes just the same. It's just going to take lots of practice to hone that plan if you want to get far in the game.

Excelent classic shmup. the game has simple yest good bullet patterns, simple and precise controls and a bullet clarity very good. I had the game in a emulator but this purchase was worth, as th emulation here is slightly better and it has leaderboards. The wonderswan was a limited console in terms of technology wich translates e in some slowdown and some flicker, as effects as explosions are not particulary well animated and smooth. Still i thinks that mechanicly the game has no faults. The control is perfect and minimal. Eschatos may have the fame of being the better from qute but personaly i think both are great and can´t decide wich one is better.

JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD - Resurrection - is the collection of two shmup games, released on the Japan exclusive WonderSwan Color portable console. Since they only released in limited quantities, they are quite rare and it's such a noble move from the devs and Degica to bring them to a wider audience and preserve them in a modern re-release. The collection includes two games: Judgement Silversword, which is a traditional shoot'em up game and Cardinal Sins, a WarioWare-esque take on the genre that gives you various tasks per level and grades you accordingly.
As there are lots of reviews on the store page talking about the details of each game in this collection (how is the gameplay, what are the general mechanics, et cetra), I will not go there. Instead I will go in-depth on other aspects of this collection and provide my own analysis on them.

Simply put, the quality of this re-release is praiseworthy as the devs did not do a rushed job. It transitions smoothly from menu to menu, and from menu to the games. There are no awkward pauses or sudden appearance of games' screens like in other retro collections; you choose an option and will be greeted with a smooth transitional animation to get what you want. It's also very nice that the devs have not forgot about the TATE mode and will let you turn the screen in any of the 4 main directions. As for the games, they hold up pretty well considering their age. However... are the games fun? While I very enjoy playing Cardinal Sins, I cannot say the same for the main game, Judgement Silversword.

Judgement Silversword is a brutal game and I do mean it literally. The starting waves are fine, but the more you go on, the more chaotic the game gets. It gets to the point where the game beats you down repeatedly, with sudden appearances of fast moving enemies or putting you in awkward (and rather unfair) situations such as enemies appearing from below the screen with no foreshadowing or warning. And that goes for all of the difficulty modes, as even easy is quite harder than a lot of other shmup games. But that's only a part of why the game is brutal, as the other part of it is because you will not be given enough tools to fight back properly.

First things first, it is nearly impossible to beat the game normally and you HAVE TO use the Double Shot. Double Shot is a glitch-ish technique that allows you to shoot both wide and forward shots at the same time, effectively doubling your firepower. That is done by holding forward shot while constantly tapping wide shot. If you don't mash buttons or use a Joy2Key script and play in a classic manner (changing between shots on demand), you will get destroyed by the enemies.

Second, the shield is not a good defensive tool. Instead of absorbing shots, the shield will just slow the projectiles down while gradually shrinking their size in order to disintegrate them. Not only that, but it also only covers the front of your ship and not all of it. Did I also mention the shield gets smaller when its power gets lower? Because of these traits, you are forced to use the shield as a last attempt to find a good way of getting out of the way, or use it in the way the devs intended and increase your multiplier by absorbing lots of small shots and dodging everything. The shield is so useless for defense that I preferred doing the double shot technique to increase the amount of projectiles on screen, make the game lag as a result and take advantage of the lag to navigate through projectiles rather than using it.

Now, these are not usually considered game breakers. You can totally deal with them and play the game to completion. But there are some things that sour the experience:

1- Some achievements are locked to the default settings. That means using your default number of credits and lives (3), playing normal or hard difficulty, while starting from level 1. You can increase the number of credits you have by unlocking them, but...

2- Extra stuff are locked behind the game's progression system which looks more suitable for handheld rather than desktop. As I have previously mentioned, this game was released for the WonderSwan portable console and therefore, uses a progression system that needs hours of playthroughs. Unlike games such as "The Tale of ALLTYNEX" trilogy where you get an extra credit upon failing or winning the game, Judgement Silversword keeps track of your total score (no matter if you win or lose, it will get recorded) and uses that to unlock extra stuff like the number of ships, the number of credits, the starting level number, BGM test, god mode, etc. Now that is not a problem on its own; but the problem is that you need an absurd amount of points to unlock most of the stuff in the game which requires you to play the game for hours, over and over again. Even then...

3- Credits do not let you continue from where you died. If you choose to continue your game using a credit, you will restart from the beginning of the stage or boss fight. That means if you want to go for the achievements, you basically need to play almost perfectly and manage to deal with everything the game throws at you. Or if you have trouble with a boss, you're stuck there until you unlock more stuff or get good.

All of the points above make Judgement Silversword very unfriendly to the lesser experienced audience, or those with limited time available to them. Judgement Silversword is ultimately a game made for a specific crowd of shmup players: Those who are willing to dedicate a large amount of their time to play the game over and over again. Cardinal Sins however, is much more interesting in comparison and can be enjoyed by everyone. That is except for the unlockable boss which introduces the same weaknesses of Judgement Silversword.

TL;DR

As I said at the beginning, this is a solid re-release with a noble intention. However, half of the package we have here fails to be accessible for the average player. If you can dedicate a large amount of time playing and perfecting your playstyle, or are interested in playing retro games that were nearly lost to time, then by all means get this collection.

WonderSwan baybee wooo!

Qute definitely knows what they're doing when it comes to shoot-em-ups. I was blown away with how much fun this little pack of games was. Don't be tricked by their simplicity, Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins will royally kick your butt if you don't give them the respect they deserve. JS especially, the game ramps up and ends on such a crazy and high note that I was not expecting.

This and Eschatos are must-haves for genre fans. This just jumped straight up to the top of my schmup favs, up there with R-Type Delta and Thunder Force V PS for sure.

Two good old shmups - true to the heart of the genre these games DO NOT contain all those horrifically annoying anime elements. No nuissance cut scenes. No cut scenes at all, in fact!

This game has shmups distilled to the essential (thanks party to it origins on a humble hardware). Player needs to learn how different enemies behave and what works through experimentation but given how the game follows shmup conventions, this is doable and satisfying.

This is a great little top down space shooter. As far as I can tell this is a pretty much perfect port of the Wonder Swan game. Controls are crisp, and difficulty settings allow you to work up from fairly easy to full on bullet hell.

A Wonderswan game, on Steam. That's a feat!

JSS Normal is mainly hard due to repetition and durable enemy HP, though. You need patience
Meanwhile Cardinal Sins is a unique fast-paced experience. Cardinal Sins is very much recommended for the casual weirdness alone.

Hard to believe that these were originally handheld games.

They're really good - reminds me of the "caravan"-type games they released for the PC-Engine. Challenging, but not ball-busting.

Great for the price.

Good shmups with some enemy wave randomization and a fast, seamless progression. Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins are both games I enjoy a lot and would recommend.

Minus points for not having autofire built-in - essential to the game is mashing or autofiring Wide Shot while holding Forward Shot to perform a glitch(?) called Double Shot utilizing both at the same time, and to use autofire for this you need an external program like antimicro, or a turbo controller. It's also locked at 60fps with a blended frame every few frames, rather than the original game's 75fps - same limitation as the 360 port. But overall it's a great port, and removes flickering and adds some new music compared to playing on a WonderSwan emulator.

Shmup shooter games were one of my favorite types of games, and since I've never owned a Wonderswan I got more interested to see how this game is. It's really a fun game, and for the time this came out it was nicely done, at least for a portable game. Of course, you'd have to understand since this was made for a portable gaming system back when it was made the graphics and sound are very simple, but really it's enjoyable.

I've long said that SHMUPS are an elegant genre. Simple in their goal, but complex in what they ask the player to perform. Judgement Silversword looks simple; it looks old, dated, and its 5 dollar price-tag may indicate it may be nothing more than a passing novelty. However, it's anything but. It's a perfect port of the Wonderswan rarity (which would easily cost you upwards of $500 to purchase otherwise), and plays like a dream.

The scoring is simple, but razor sharp. The controls are responsive, the bullet patterns are captivating, and the short rapid-fire levels are so much fun to blitz through! Best 5 bucks I've spent in a very, very long time. The addition of Cardinal Sins which was, previously, only available on the Wonderswan Development Kit, is the icing on the cake.

A must own. No question about it.

I picked up JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD – Resurrection – up completely on a whim without knowing anything about the game. I was looking for something to play and the low price point was enough to persuade me to give it a try. There are a lot of bad to mediocre low-priced games out there that target impulse purchasers, and I'm happy to say that JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD – Resurrection – does not fall into that category.

The two included games are somewhat obscure WonderSwan Color titles. For anyone out there that doesn't know: the WonderSwan is a handheld game console that was released in Japan. Judgement Silversword was the winner of a Bandai game development contest, and Cardinal Sins is a WonderSwan title based on Judgement Silversword but only playable through the WonderWitch Personal Software Development Kit. Physical copies of the game are quite rare, and very expensive, as it only received a limited commercial release in Japan.

Judgement Silversword is a more traditional shmup. You fly through each stage destroying enemies and fighting bosses along the way. It's a very challenging game, and unlike arcade style shooters you do not have infinite credits. While playing the game and earning points you will unlock additional credits and other features. The ship has two modes of fire and a shield which can also be used offensively. The game will feel very familiar to individuals that have played the Judgement Silversword's spiritual successor ESCHATOS.

Cardinal Sins is a different type of game. Judging by the fact that this release was named JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD – Resurrection –, I didn't really expect very much from the second game which isn't even referenced in the title. Recycle edition isn't exactly a very flattering subtitle for a game either. Despite its lack of prominent marketing, I ended up being more drawn into Cardinal Sins than I was Judgement Silversword. It has seven different stages, each of which has a special objective. You are graded on each individual stage, and the game gives you an average letter grade at the end. If the player performs well enough they will be rewarded with a chance to find the final boss. Cardinal Sins is a short and fast paced game perfect for people that are in the mood to play a quick game during a lunch break or between other activities. I've had a lot of fun trying to beat my personal best scores, and it is truly a shame that the Steam release doesn't have a global leader-board.

The graphical and audio aspects are about what one would expect from an older handheld release. It looks and sounds fine, and fortunately has aged well. It would have been nice to have more audio tracks but I suspect there aren't so many due to the technical limitations of the WonderSwan. I enjoyed what was there, and even recognized one song that was later recreated in ESCHATOS. The visuals are clear and bullets are easy to distinguish. My only criticism in regards to graphics is of a very brief section of Cardinal Sins where the colors suddenly change. It was slightly disorienting the first time I saw it, but a non-issue once I knew what to expect.

Overall JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD – Resurrection – is a great package. It offers two great shmups at a very low price. I'm glad these were brought to Steam as they are WonderSwan titles I was completely unfamiliar with and most likely wouldn't have had the opportunity to play otherwise. As previously mentioned, it's unfortunate that the game doesn't have leader-boards, but fortunately this isn't something that at all detracts from the gameplay. I definitely recommend buying this, they're solid shooters and great bang for the buck. If you're a fan of the genre you really can't go wrong with this one.

EDIT: October 6th, 2016 - It has leaderboards now! Buy this game!

I love this shmup. It's just rad. I love that you can see little reverse jets when you back the ship up and the little twitching movement your guns do as you pew-pew away. It's adorable.

I also like the overall set up over the game where you have fast attack pattens instead of 5 or so long levels--it really makes the action flow beautifully. JSS also does an awesome job at finding a balance between traditional shooters with less/faster bullets and the ever-popular danmaku bullet hell with slow down and tons of bullets. You get the best of both with JSS.

My only critique is that there's like 3 music tracks or so in the whole game. Guess it was just a software limitation from the original development of the game? Not a huge deal by any means, but a little meh.

ALSO--I am very bummed there aren't scoreboards. WTF? That's so easy to do and the xbox360 version has them so why not the steam version? So lame.

But still, all-in-all it's a fantastic shooter with well-balanced action, a unique shield system, lots of stocks so that it always feels fair, not a ton of memorization required, and a good mix of bullet-hell and traditional shooting style.

PROTIP: If you have a controller or stick with a turbo function you can set the spread shot to turbo whilst also holding the straight shot to basically use both simultaneously. Or you can cheat the old-fashioned way without turbo and repeatedly mash the spreadshot while holding down the straight shot ;)

This vertical shoot 'em up was initially released in 2004 for the system WonderSwan Color and later re-released for Xbox 360 as a bonus inside Eschatos, a modern spiritual sequel and also for PC (Steam). JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD is a game with simple graphics, but fluid, resembling a bit the classic Zanac for NES and MSX. The gameplay is fast, furious, but fun. You have two types of weapons: a more concentrated and long-range and other more spread shot, but short-range as well as a shield. Both the weapons and the shield are activated by pressing buttons on the controller. The soundtrack is also simple, but interesting. It's a cool game that has good challenge doses for lovers of the genre. To see me playinght this game, please check this video: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=716513404

These are great games. Do not be mistaken by my assassment of this particular port. This review speaks to the product at the state that it was originally relased on Steam. The games herein still play like butter and are highly refined examples of why the shmup/shooter/STG genre is so compelling, fun, and relevent.

However, one of the key componets for games like these is Score chasing. These two games are built around the idea of "high-score". All of the gameplay mechanics within are in service to the scoring system itself. If one can agree with this, then one may find the lack of online Leaderboards in this Steam version to be a very huge disappointment. Online leaderboards shouldn't be an afterthought or a missing feature for modern games of this type.

What makes this even more frustrating is that I own these games in their previous incarnation on the Xbox 360. That version, which is what I beleve this port was ported from, has fully funtional online leaderboards. That version remains the superior version, play it there if you don't wanna feel like you've been cut-off from the rest of the world.

So close to being pure bliss it hurts.

*******Update July 2018*******

Ok, the developers have since added Online leaderboards to these games post launch. That's great! While I still think theses games should have been included into the same package as Eschatos(like the retail version of Eschatos on Xbox 360), this addion is enough for me to change my review to "Recommended". Cheers to the publisher/developer Degica/Qute. Seemingly small things like this can make a huge difference. Thanks!

A vast amount of my playtime from this comes from the Xbox 360 version of Eschatos, however this is an absolutely excellent port with just a single problem - Lack of online leaderboards.

The Xbox 360 versions of these ports had online leaderboards and that's a pretty weird oversight for this release, especially considering Eschatos has them in place! With that said though, it's a set of two absolutely exceptional shmups that no fan of the genre should go without playing. Graphically simple but incredibly involving.

Judgement Silversword was a Wonderwitch title that won a development competition and got a cartridge release for the Bandai Wonderswan. It's an excellent shmup with great scoring that's just damn fun to play.

Cardinal Sins is more of a 'skill test' type of game, with objective based stages named after the 7 deadly sins. For example, envy has you destroying everything, and your score is based on destruction rate. Wrath has you vs. a boss throwing a screen full of bullets at you, and your score is based on how many times you've died.

The grades you get throughout these 7 stages determine what bonuses you get for the final boss fight, which is extremely difficult.

The two games bundled are amazing examples of good shmup mechanics and I'd highly recommend to any shmup fan. At this price it feels like I'm stealing.
