This is such a fantastic game. The theme is dripping with love for the culture and children's cartoons. The humor is great. Side note that this also plays great on steam deck, which is a bonus!
Yes, I know... this is widely held among the more frustrating experiences in the Metroidvania world. At least the first game is, anyhow. But I honestly haven't had that much of an issue. In fact, I've really had a great time playing it. Yes, you have a variety of keypresses that need to coincide with thumbstick movements, and sometimes those misfire. Sometimes you die because of it. Honestly though... I have found many, many games which I found more frustrating, and the positive elements of this game far outweigh any issues.
I'd like to point out in particular the music in this game adds so much to the experience, as well as the colors and the graphics.
The story is simple, and there is elegence in that. It's reminiscent of a Mexican children's cartoon, to be honest, and that's great because it just works. It doesn't try to convey complex moral messages. There is good and evil here, and you are out to avenge your death and rescue the princesa. It's beauty is in simplicity in that way.
This is a classic, it really is. If you are a fan of Metroidvanias, you are not doing yourself any favors if you have not at least tried out Guacamelee.
Absolutely love this game! Which is exactly why I'm helping add Archipelago support!
Great Metroidvania!
very nice
I played it when it came out, I'm still playing now.
Classic
Fun and funny. Some clever ideas. Definitely more of a 'beat em up' type game than a more methodical combat style like other Metroidvania's I've played. Well worth the $4 on the Steam sale.
i play this in coop, for all aspect i rate this game 10/10
GUACAMELEE! SUPER TURBO CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION!
Sin notas.
This is a really fun game. The rate at which you learn new abilities and/or upgrade feels just about right. Pollo is somewhat underused, but that is put right in numero 2.
It can be extremely hard in places, bit generally has a decent skill curve.
Buy it!
I think if you like Metroidvanias, then you'll like this game. I saw a lot of people saying they didn't care for the humor but the humor was fine. I appreciated all of the gaming easter eggs crammed in there I also remember some people saying the platforming was disappointing but I thought it was just right with plenty of puzzle rooms to work through. Maybe the most disappointing is that the game is a too easy until you get to hard mode and it even tells you that this is where the game really starts. I'm glad I'm a bit of a completionist because the hard mode really does feel like the proper way to play the game. Also the combat was a lot of fun, you can get stunlocked a bit but it overall it was very satisfying to play.
I'm actually super frustrated with myself for sleeping on this game for so long. The writing is amazingly funny and clever, the moment-to-moment gameplay is super fun and the music and art direction is incredible. They do a great job of making an expansive world filled with collectables, easter eggs and shortcuts.
My only real criticisms are for the endgame content. Guacamelee is very finicky to control when precision is required or mobs of enemies are on screen. Compared to other Metroidvanias, it doesn't feel as flexible with the controls and you'll often find the wrong move coming out because you're 1-degree off. Even worse, I've had many instances where the move just doesn't come out at all an Juan just stands there eating damage or falling to his death. The challenge rooms demand absolute perfection to pull off so... You can see how this would all kinda fall apart when put together.
Honestly though, the last part only affects psychos like me who try to complete as much as humanly possible. Buy this game and you'll have a great time.
Amazing game and a nice enhancement of Guacamelee (Gold).
ay caramba
Excellent metroidvania experience. Lots of parkour and puzzle with challenging combat (sometimes). It is causal in the sense that if you for instance get a boss to second phase and dies, you just continue on the second phase. it is very momentum heavy and minimizes the "running back to where you died" aspect. However the combos are pretty hard, after a few weeks i already forgot, so in that sense, it is not casual, you need frequent play to maintain your skill. Or maybe that's just me having a skill issue. Will recommend.
A shining prime example of how the age of a well made videogame doesn't matter. Have you ever wanted a 2D metroidvania but with deeper combat? Well look no further! With an art style somewhere between classic cartoon network shows and flash animation. I'm not an expert on Mexican culture, but a friend of mine who lives there seems happy enough with this game, it's worth mentioning because EVERYTHING in this game is very much influenced by traditional Mexican culture, music, luchadors and the day of the dead.
What else? Oh yeah, this game has gone through a lot of updates to make it more polished (earlier builds actually needed a seizure warning but that's been fixed!) there's a bonkers 4 player co-op if that's your jam (but no online play which is a massive wasted opportunity) and also lots of LOTS of references to other games, both classic and indie and even internet memes! Well... memes that existed in 2013...
No game is perfect, but I really do believe this game should be remembered up there with the likes of 2D Castlevania and Metroid, Doing what they do just as well but in it's own way.
I love the parts where you punch skeletons
exceptional game its on sale get it so full of charm and care
6/10 I Never Enjoyed It Because I Can't Activate my Bigger Tostada and Buffstada Mod.
The game is good i beat carlos but i didn't beat my meat in the process because there's no mod.
You are essentially buying the same exact game but again with this one. Also, they completely fucked up the "Assign Controllers" system and I don't know why. It worked perfectly in Gold Edition but for some reason in this game they force the keyboard and mouse to be Player 1 and the controller to be Player 2 in local co-op.
amazing experience guys!
For the first ~60% of this game, I was mostly enjoying it. Combat is simple but decently fun. The art style and music are nice. Exploration is much more basic than most metroidvanias as it is almost completely linear with occasional backtracking to break a few color coded walls later. Controls felt clunky at times, some of the arenas were just random enemy spam with no coherence, and the punishment for ANY hit received (even tiny projectiles) is a full 3+ second long knockdown stun which just felt atrocious even if the game is fairly easy most of the time. The game was on the repetitive side, but still fun enough for the first part so I overlooked all that stuff. Then the last two or three levels happened. Long, tedious, annoying, boring, repetitive levels. Add in some seizure-inducing lightning background effects that you can't turn off for good measure, pairing nicely with the flashing seizure-inducing upgrade screens. Maybe it's just me, but this game really got on my nerves by the end.
Great metroidvania, funny and full of videogame references.
The Mexican art style, music and world are excellent and the punching + grappling gameplay is very fun.
Highly recommended, specially on PC handhelds as it is very lightweight.
The Mexiverse is a really hilarious and entertaining place to set a game. Then they called the protagonist the Chosen Juan, and that's some god tier world building. It's a cartoony version of the Dias del los Muertos aesthetic. I think Guacamelee has an incredible art style, a good sense of humor, and is a great beat 'em up / Metroidvania too.
I got a little confused by all of the fighting combos in the menu, but it's easy enough to just button mash all the way to the end on normal difficulty. Some of the stand out mechanics are that you can switch between the world of the living and the dead, which completely changes the game's environments. You can also travel to hell, visit the devil, do some challenge based time trials, and I had a good time trying to get gold on them.
The music might be the best part of the whole experience. I loved how any time you'd get a new skill a mariachi band would start blasting some messed up distorted tune while the words GOAT JUMP flashed on the screen. The people who made this were clearly having a lot of fun, and it shows. I can recommend Guacamelee to anyjuan.
Short Version:
While "Guacamelee! STCE" gets the basics of what it wants to do right, I feel it also tries to tackle too much at once to utilize its full potential. I would recommend the game, but only to those who desire a simple-minded action adventure with brawling focus and decent OST as it is held back by its unforgiving platforming and no way to obtain completion without the will to re-visit the same areas over and over aimlessly.
Long Version:
Growing up, I played lots of Asterix and Obelix XXL, a game that reminds me a good bit of Guacamelee. Both games present a relatively simple story, are mostly linear action adventures where you need to backtrack to gather all the available collectibles as well as that they are primarily emphasized on their repetitive yet somewhat charming combat play.
Unlike other's fair opinion, I think that the variation in enemy design actually helped the game be less repetitive overall. As confusing as it may get sometimes, you are always presented with multiple ways to deal with a situation in combat, examples would be the Intenso mode or the invincibility you receive while grabbing enemies, so I have little gripes with that portion.
Like those others however, I would definitely agree that while it sounds like a nice idea to combine precision platforming and such combat, I think that Guacamelee would have been better off toning the difficulty of such platforming sections down.
With the said above, the metroidvania-esque approach isn't to my liking at all and especially in the instance of you wanting to complete the game, you have little means to make it easy to find missing rooms or pieces, that may even be required for a better ending!
With my section about Asterix and Obelix I'd say I am even a little more lenient than I'd usually be due to nostalgia.
For those wondering what I think about the story, for a moment it had me interested in these characters only to feel like much of said story was ultimately a scapegoat to justify the settings the brawling is supposed to be taking place, even when I adore the overall Mexican themes and find the OST pretty good as well!
Guacamelee is by no means a bad game and deserves a try but be advised that I cannot recommend completing it nor for when you are quickly bored by repetitive gameplay, which comes with the nature of this game.
Thank you for reading!
What a great game. I wish Mexicans were real.
i don’ usually play metroidvania games but Guacamelee was special
I really like the style and humor of this game and it is a really solid metroidvania.
It is pretty easy overall, which is nice. But as you play more.... they start adding some annoying enemies and there are a couple of dreaded platform challenges. There is a lot of backtracking if you want all the powerups, but you really don't need them all to get the normal ending. So it is worth playing but I feel like there are some annoying parts.
It's Still Awesome, but glorified DLC. Not necessary if you already own the original.
I believe this is like the original just with some extra features, but it still has the great gameplay and humor of the older edition and is really worth playing! I had fun with Guacamelee and am looking forward to playing the sequel!
A great Metroidvania beat-em-up with a quirky cast and simple story. It's fairly short, beatable in about 6 hours, but it's a good time.
GUACAMELEE SUPA TOBO CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION
I don't want to play super meat boy anymore
art and music 9/10 ...
... gameplay 2/10
The combat is pretty damn fun in here!
Throughout the game there are a bunch of cute funny references and details which make it super charming.
Power ups are pretty exciting as a metroidvania standpoint. My only complaint would probably be that the game tells you where to go (with a marker on the map) pretty often; that can hold the exploration back, but nothing too bad.
The game's awesome overall!
A short but very solid metroidvania with tight platforming and very fun combat. The platforming sections are fun challenges especially once most abilities are unlocked and especially demanding in the Infierno Challenges. The combat encounters while fun seem a bit too easy, like enemies usually die before you can even finish your sick combo. Wish hard difficulty was unlocked from the start.
The presentation in this game is top-notch, charming artstyle, fantastic soundtrack and the whole mexican setting with some fun references put in there was great. The story is alright, nothing you haven't seen before. There's alot of replay value if you're going for the true ending and 100%. Its not the greatest metroidvanias but it is a fun time which doesn't need hours invested in it which is honestly enough for me to recommend giving this a go and it also tends to go on sale quite often so do keep an eye out if you're interested.
Pretty great metroidvania with a latino theme. Artwork and animations are incredible. Abilities are fun and execution late game gets pretty crazy.
Very solid Metroidvania with a strong focus on combat and combos. The start drags a little bit, but once you get most of your abilities, the mid to late game becomes really fun and expressive. Also has a really cool aesthetic and soundtrack.
I bought the original Guacamelee and played it more than once, then they released an updated version and gave it to me for free and I played that through twice, now there's this version which they gave to me for free and it's changed significantly and I'm playing it through again...
I love this game - it's a fantastic update of side-scrolling, platform game. The mechanics are cool. The challenges are cool. The style of the art is cool. It's just a rad, fun game.
A great metroidvania where your combat abilities also act as traversal options. Also there are memes, which I appreciate.
I wanted to play this game for so long and finally got around to it.
It WAS NOT what I expected. I thought it would be a 2D fighter, but it was much more than that.
A puzzle, a parkour and even exploration game.
I never thought such a "simple" game could be played for 21 hours and I only opened like %33 of the map.
Fantastic production. Gracias.
It´s good and silly, not so funny if you're over 15 or 10 but it is a good game, I personally love the enviroments because they are well done. 8/10 Overall.
