This game is INCREDIBLE. Beyond Incredible! Everything about it is amazing - The graphics, the soundtrack, the story, the game play, it's all amazing! This game is super underrated/not well known. Lynx are my favorite animals, and this game made me LOVE them more. The DLC's are amazing too. Worth the money.
Shelter 2 seeks to create an emotionally immersive experience that allows players to explore the natural world through the eyes of a mother lynx. The idea was to convey the feelings of protection, connection, and vulnerability that a mother feels while guiding her offspring in a wild environment. However, I didn’t find this game as memorable as the original.

The Hunt
In Shelter 2, you play as a mother lynx venturing through a vast and dynamic ecosystem, where every action is vital for the survival of her cubs. Hunting becomes both a means of sustenance and a test of your strategic thinking. The lynx must hunt a variety of prey hares, voles, frogs, pheasants, deer, and more each requiring different tactics to catch and providing crucial nourishment to her growing family. Hares, being the most common prey, often serve as a primary food source. The hunting itself is a carefully calculated endeavor, where stealth and timing are paramount. You must manage the mother’s stamina bar as you sneak up on prey, ensuring she doesn’t overexert herself. Some hunts demand quick, precise leaps to catch the prey, creating a thrilling challenge. However, most prey just requires you to run into them. The mother lynx doesn’t need to eat to survive, each successful hunt merely refills her stamina, allowing her to continue protecting and hunting for her cubs. The cubs, however, must be fed regularly to stay strong. If they go too long without food, they become weak and collapse, and their survival hinges on your ability to bring them nourishment in time.
Dangers
Beyond hunting, you must navigate environmental dangers like the lonesome fog, forest fires, and shifting seasons, as well as predators such as wolves, bears, foxes, and eagles. Each encounter with these threats is tense, requiring quick reflexes and careful decision-making. The tension of survival is constant, and the game effectively builds a sense of dread and urgency that keeps you on edge as you manage your family's well-being. For those seeking more depth, the Mountains DLC offers new challenges, including additional predators and prey, as well as a environmental hazard that expands the game's world and strategy. Foxes, eagles, bears, forest fires are included in the DLC. This expansion enriches the experience, but the core game remains engaging on its own, with its careful balance of survival mechanics and emotional storytelling.
Length and Replayability
While Shelter 2 is relatively short taking around an hour or two to complete the replay value lies in its generational system. After finishing the main campaign, you can continue playing as one of the cubs, going generation to generation. However, the game follows the same story beats, it can feel repetitive if you're expecting new variations in gameplay or the campaign itself. The Mountains DLC adds a fresh location to explore, but the core experience remains largely unchanged. Personally, I don’t mind it because I tend to get lost in roleplay. The aesthetics and soundtrack alone make it worth revisiting, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the world. If you like collectibles you can find plenty throughout the world which can add an extra layer of exploration and discovery.

Such a pleasing game to look at and a heartbreaking game to play. There were so many times i just had to turn it off cuz it hurt so much. It takes a lot to play, and even on my new computers it's a little slow sometimes. But overall great game, highly recommend it.

This is one of my favorite games ever, I've played it ever since I was like 9 or 10 and I still play it every now and then. I love everything about this game, like the music, art style, gameplay, literally everything.
You will probably cry your eyes out I'm gonna be real, but the art is unique and the plot is interesting. I love this game and I would highly recommend just be cautious if you cry easy.

a BEAUTIFUL game!!! i've wanted this game since it came out, but never had the money/computer for it.. but with the steam winter sale, i FINALLY got it, and other Shelter things!! the map is WAY bigger and prettier than any youtube playthrough i've ever seen.. it was an amazing surprise :3 and the collectibles are so fun to find!
Careless. The zones should be blocked off if you're just going to kill all my kittens if I follow the giant "something is here" symbol. You start the game staring off of a cliff, facing it, so I thought, "Oh, that's probably the hunting ground." Going into another zone apparently makes the next season go by, killing all my kittens.
Additionally, creeping around in vegetation doesn't work. The rabbits still see you and run off. The camera is finicky and blocked by vegetation so you cannot even see the prey.
The team did not do quality control and testing. It's frustrating, careless, and unintuitive. A few playtests would have noticed these issues.
I absolutely love this game. I've played it with my sisters for years since I was young and always liked it and thought it was a cool game. But I do recommend getting addons like the mountains for more dangers in the game!
Might be fun, but can't tell. Controls are totally broken on the steam deck with a Bluetooth Xbox controller.

Pros:
Stunning graphics. Unrealistic graphics i usually dislike, but the models and styles of this game are gorgeous.
Unlike in the 1st game (since all of your cubs died at the end), you actually get to continue Inna's legacy. You can play as her cubs, then her cubs' cubs, then her cubs' cubs' cubs, then her 321837215283th grandchildren's cubs.
The immersive lands of this game, such as the swamp and the spring atmosphere.
A peaceful ecosystem if you exclude predators trying to take your cubs. But i respect that, all survival games HAVE to have a threat like that otherwise it's not survival at all.

erm akshually lynxes are excellent swimmers. they can even last long underwater. this is a game about bobcats, not about slugcats.
A few more, but i forgot what they were.
6.5/10 Needs some improvement. They didn't research on bobcats that well, but atleast they acknowledged them as adept hunters.

Shelter 2 has long been one of my favourite games, it has beautiful graphics and art style.
There is no set way on how to play the game a certain way so after a few litters at first you can try different modes like survival mode and DLC mountains threats, or different challenges like only hunt a specific species of prey.
also the collectables are a great part of the game and kind of makes you have to explore all the nooks and crannies. (which i love doing in open world games anyway)
overall a truly great game!

I liked the first game. It was short and overpriced, but it had a nice story with unique levels, each of which had it’s own distinctive threat you were forced to deal with, and limited resources made it so that your cubs were actually at risk of starving to death.
I really don’t see the appeal of this one, and after thoroughly reading through the notes I took during my playthrough, I actually kind of despise it. The story here is only slightly longer than the original, yet the game has a 66% price markup. Where the first game had you trying to find a new den for your cubs whilst simultaneously keeping them well fed and protected, this game only offers up two of those facets for the player’s enjoyment. Feeding your young poses no challenge as food constantly spawns in your immediate vicinity, and without the Mountains DLC, protecting your young is as simple as staying out of the Tundra and going AFK when the sky starts to darken.
Even with the DLC (Which pushes the price well over double that of the first game), threats are still few and far between, and when they do eventually arise, they’re all mechanically lacklustre. In my first playthrough, I encountered two eagles (Which are as easy to deal with as any other animal in the entire game), two foxes (Which according to the wiki are predators, but they seem to just run away as soon as they get anywhere near you), and one forest fire (Which can be avoided entirely just by staying away from forests). Each of these threats were originally featured in the first game, and many of them were so integral to the story that they actually warranted their own chapters, so seeing them reintroduced as bog-standard predators in a DLC this expensive speaks volumes on the developer’s overall intentions. The survivial mode difficulty spike is marginal, I'd even go as far as to say negligible, and the entire game suffers from a myriad of technical issues including bad geometry and poor performance.
The game barely does anything to keep you engaged, and above all else, it has almost four hundred collectables, not including the DLC ones, all of which are required to finish off the achievements; no way of tracking them, aside from a faint sparkle which only appears under certain conditions, no way of seeing which ones you’ve already collected, and a few which have yet to be moved from their out-of-bounds positions almost a decade after release. The real kicker is that even after you’ve spent ten hours going around picking up every little rock, leaf, and stick, you’re still required to play the game an additional three times MINIMUM in order to get the generational achievements, because fuck the other thousand games I have sitting in my library, right? As a result, what should’ve been no more than an hour long experience ultimately took me nineteen to complete. It’s artificial playtime inflation for a shallow and unimaginative sequel which is two-thirds the game its predecessor was and five-thirds the price. Shelter 2? More like Shitter 2.
Keeps getting stuck on the how to jump/ run scene, but otherwise 10/10
Even after so many years, I still can't forget how I lost my only kitten on the very last day!
I was heartbroken! I called out for him and searched everywhere but couldn't find him anywhere. It was a very emotional moment when I finally realised that he was lost all alone forever in those swamps... And the fact that the other three kittens stayed with me until they were old enough to leave didn't make me feel any better. I kept thinking only of him and how I hadn't properly kept an eye on him. Bloody swamp! I wish we'd stayed in that cave...

I'll be kinda harsh here just because my first playthrough was pretty uneventful.
It's possibly a stylistic choice a lot of people like, but I'm really not a fan of just how little the game wants to tell you. I've learned more in the reviews and just looking the game up than I did IN the game. I didn't know you could pick up cubs. I didn't know prey not spawning when it gets weird and dark was an intentional event and not just buggy night time, or something. Good immersion? Sure, maybe, if it wasn't just a bit confusing and frustrating trying to figure out where I was, what to do, what I NEED to do.
Ultimately all of my cubs survived, but that was only due to reloading a couple of times when I was completely lost as to why there was nothing nearby to eat, and because the game cut short one of only 2 eagle attacks on its own to grow the cubs. Other than that, it really didn't feel like anything could happen or was going to happen. I barely had time to get to the areas that had any big threats to begin with. It sort of feels like you have to TRY to get into any real danger. And in my case, the game is walk... hunt... walk... hunt... eat... walk... hunt... repeat. Pretty boring, and not as fun to explore the big map when you're stuck to a snail's pace to save stamina between running down prey for 4 tiny bottomless pits + you.
It IS cute, and the music is really good. The art style is okay, just not really for me, so I can't call that a selling point. If you want a very simple survival game that might break your heart sometimes, maybe you'd like it, but for me it just doesn't give enough to connect with the themes and message it wants to show. There are other games that just do this better.

the mechanics of when you actually need to feed the cubs or not and when it's safe to feed yourself cause apparently they just have infinite bellies
The game forces you to walking pace because your stamina bar only fills like 1/3 of the way on it's own so you have to absolutely *crawl* to any new spot if you actually want your stamina banked to do anything.
Why do you have kittens with you when hunting? Who knows
and from what I've gathered online its just hunt, feed, hunt, feed, and nothing else.
I probably got this in a humble bundle and it still feels like I paid too much.

(i see some people say it's too stressful feeding the cubs, lowkey a skill issue /j, but it really isn't that hard depending on where you are- there's quite a bit exploring to do and while yeah, you may not be able to do much of that but you can always do it for as long as you want after the cubs leave. might be biased because it's my childhood game, but i don't think the game is meant to be extremely realistic or anything. if you want to explore the beautiful map of this game or you're a bit more focused on the meaning, i personally think this game is good for those things, not 'being realistic', which isn't what they're really trying to do, at least from what i've seen. i mean, the game was meant to send a message, not show you exactly how a lynx lives; it shows you the hardships of being a mother and the love most mothers have for their kids, and that's what makes me enjoy it so much. none of their games are meant to be easy or peaceful, neither is this game, because that's kind of how it is with family. we've all got our hardships and that's what i love about these games. also i have SO much love for the soundtracks, absolutely beautiful)
