Very scary. Too scary for me with the massive amount of jumpscares, had to stop playing. Can make it through Fatal Frame etc, but this is too extreme. Still looks well made - give it a spin and see if you like the jump scares!
Best one of the indonesian horror game, i like it
I really enjoyed this game when it came out in 2014. DreadOut has a really creepy atmosphere and story. I think that if you enjoy Asian horror games like Fatal Frame, White Day: A Labyrinth Named School, and other games similar to that you will enjoy this game, I certainly did. Despite it's aged look the game is still a good experience and it teaches you a bit of Indonesian folktales based around some of the ghosts. I give this game an 8 out of 10 the only reason why is because the game is a bit short and does not really tell you how to defeat certain ghosts but apart from that the game is still a fun experience. Hope you all enjoy!
I bought this game a couple years ago - not even really sure why I bought it, but I saw it in my library today and booted it up for the first time. 37 minutes later, I ended up ragequitting this game on act 0 which is apparently the tutorial level.
First off - there's no instructions that are given to you as you go. I only discovered the "manual" by trying to change a keybind in the settings. Saw a "how to play" button and clicked it. This REALLY should have been more interactive, especially with the tutorial. I had absolutely zero idea what I was doing, and it was more infuriating than immersive.
I got cornered by two ghosts who kept attacking me, which when you take a hit you get knocked to the ground. Apparently the only way to fight the ghosts is with the camera? Which I couldn't use because i kept getting knocked down. Into limbo I go...respawn? right back into getting knocked down over and over again. By round 4 I alt+f4d and submitted a refund request. The graphics on this game are glitchy at best, and the "horror" element is just jumpscares and overly loud sound effects 0/10
within 5 mins of playing the game it became unplayable ..
Increible Juego,Historia E Musica
a lil too scary for me
So Sceriiiii
Cool horror game with different working mechanics and a well crafted storyline.
l screamed my lungs out...
this game perfectly captures what true horror is, i like that you have to use a camera, what i don't like is that the hints are sorta vague.
lowkey unplayable
Nothing like fighting terrifying ghosts with the power of… a smartphone. Forget signal strength—I need an exorcist app. 11/10, screamed in multiple languages.
This game is horrendously bad. I forgot that I played it like 10 years ago and recently got swept up in the charm of its 2 best known cut scenes on Youtube. Funnily enough, I quit the game in the same spot I did all those years ago, even with my newfound patience. I thought that the rough looking graphics and jank would be worth the charm and a new approach to horror games using Indonesian mythology. Boy was I wrong!
The game is ugly AF, in regards to artistic style and graphical fidelity. Sound design is poor quality and negatively impacts gameplay because you'll hear a ghost moaning or the hint system cuing you in on something, only for you to not know that the thing/ghost you're looking for is on the floow above or below. It doesn't help that trying to visually find the thing is like finding a needle in a haystack because key items blend in with the rest of the crappy textures. Soundtrack is, on a few occasions, not the appropriate choice for the moment, and not in a funny way either. Dialogue is cringey and characters constantly talk over each other. It reminds me of Sonic Adventure 2's problem with this, except it's even worse here because you have to exhaust all the spaced apart dialogue to move on sometimes. Gameplay is boring and repetitive, you're literally just pointing a camera at ghosts while spamming taking pictures with no reliable feedback as to where their "weakpoint" is. You'll be wandering around aimlessly with your slow run speed trying to figure out what to do while wasting time because the level design is wide, empty, and has no direction. This was all in the span of a little less than 2 hours, I can only imagine how much frustrating this could have gotten if I tried to stick it out longer. I've heard of horror stories about how rage inducing and unbalanced the bosses can be in this game.
Listen, don't buy it. Look up cutscene footage or the summary of this game from Oranalysis on YouTube if you want to see what it's about, but don't waste your money. I feel like there are a lot of people who are way too forgiving of this game because the devs are indie (or they're being nationalistic), but I call BS on that. There are more than a handful of good indie devs that make quality art (Toby Fox, Team Yacht Club, Radical Fish Games, Casper Croes, Heart Machine, Super Giant, etc.). Digital Happiness even had the balls to re-release this pile of garbage on consoles recently under the pretense of it being a remaster, yet with the same ugly graphics and problems plaguing the original. My one thing I'm grateful for about playing this is that I did so on Steam, which has a fair refund policy.
Linda the waifu. A perfect blend of horror and action. F those jump scares though.
im at loss honestly. i wouldnt suggest you to play this game instead watch a playthrough because gameplay is ughguhguhguhghhhghghhhhhh i literally gave 4 chances to this game but naaahhhhwww i cant enjoy a bit. nonetheless its fun to watch it while eating.

Nice atmosphere and an interesting plot twist in the end! Taking into account the year that it was made, it is an ok horror game. Already have the next 2 games and I'm curious about where will the story lead.
Between all 3 acts (act 0, act 1, and act 2), I found act 1 the most boring/confusing one. Either because I'm a noob, or it was really not that intuitive.
Advice for achievement hunters: check the achievement's descriptions first, as you may need to repeat the game more than once.
I recommend it to whoever likes horror games!
The game overall is just frustrating. I really tried to like it, and got a good amount into Act 2 before getting soft locked over and over again, and gave up. I can't bring myself to repeat the act.
The game is too big at times for it's own good and you'll be wondering around trying to find where you're supposed to go to progress finally. The puzzles are minimalistic with very little context clues, if any, and require being at very precise locations and angles when you use the camera.
"Boss" fights, if you can even call them that, boil down to running in a circle and baiting an attack to take a picture, and repeating till the game decides it's done. Pair that with being soft locked a few times, and gluing my eyes to a guide to stop running in circles fruitlessly, and I just can't recommend it.
don't buy this game full price, wait for deals season, as a 5 dollar game its alright, horror game fans will def appreciate it but u really have to be into horror to enjoy it, not the worst thing I've played but surely not the best. The second game on console was really good so if u want to have some extra info behind the whole dreadout series u might as well just play this one too.
As the second game made by Digital Happiness it is really acceptable and good and I really liked the idea of this game. The Dread franchise has the potential for a great horror game.
If you think you are very brave but you are really scared, don't come to these games just to say I am brave (like someone told me to install this game and sit next to me in a dark room at night and play)
But if you have experience before, this game will only scare you the first time
Most of the bugs and glitches are related to Act 2 or the school stage, where the shutter lag is the only thing that bothers you throughout the game.
The pre-school part where you have to cross the bridge and go to the school is designed in such a way that you think the game has bugs/glitches, one of the reasons for that is the dry and lifeless environment and animations.
There are fights and boss fights with the camera that sometimes have to be done with a certain rhythm or else you will die many times. This fighting without cold or hot weapons was one of those good ideas that made it different from other games. Although it has some flaws, including short gameplay, it has tried to be balanced in all parts of the game.
Scaryyy
This game is an interesting one, it’s like if they took inspiration from fatal frame and made it more of a survival horror aspect (sorta).
The game explores Indonesian horror, which I found interesting. Unfortunately the game shows its age pretty often (it’s a decade old as of writing this), so a lot of the Indonesian folk lore elements are overshadowed by the jankiness of the older elements of the game.
Overall I would say it was enjoyable enough.
If you would like to check the game out before you buy, I humbly present my play through for your consideration: https://youtu.be/UN86vC2OeOI
Hands down the WORST game ive ever played. The first Ghost fight with the scissors is a nightmare. Not only is it a crappy place to fight but the mechanics want to stop working randomly. this game is a headache and a fucking slog.
I hope Ira is ok, seemed like she caught the flu or something last time we saw her
Drawing clear inspiration from classics like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and, most prominently, Fatal Frame (Project Zero), this game successfully captures the eerie atmosphere that fans of the genre, like myself, crave. The incorporation of Indonesian folklore and supernatural elements is a standout feature, offering a unique cultural twist that I, for one, enjoyed a lot.
However, DreadOut stumbles in a few key areas, unfortunately. First of all, it’s, in my opinion, painfully short, clocking in at just a few hours, which left me craving much more exploration and story development. Additionally, while I generally don’t mind how it was inspired by the Fatal Frame franchise, admittedly, it sometimes feels like a lesser copy rather than an innovative homage. The controls are another major frustration, feeling clunky and imprecise, especially during tense encounters. Trust me, use a keyboard and mouse, and forget about controllers! I also ran into a few glitches, and one time the whole thing crashed.
That said, the haunting environments and the game’s ability to create tension with its minimalistic design are commendable. The ghosts and locations are creepy, the plot is OK (the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, especially our mute protagonist…), the sound effects are fine, and the voice acting… well, it’s mediocre at best. Still, DreadOut is worth playing for its atmosphere and unique setting, but seasoned horror fans might find themselves wishing for a more polished and expansive experience. It’s a solid effort that ultimately falls short of the masterpieces that inspired it.
best game
short and sweet. good jump scares, but feels aged.
i alr miss this game
Behind the layers of baffling bugs, obtuse mechanics, needlessly disorienting level design, weird difficulty spikes, bullet-sponge enemies, disjointed story that cuts randomly between scenes, and systems that just don't work, there're a few good ideas for a game.
I just can't recommend this as-is to anyone. Even as someone who tends to enjoy the "jankery" of many horror games (for their charm), I found myself frustrated way too often.
This is one of those games that you'll enjoy once you understand what you have to do. I found that in some places you'll think "what do I do now?". The game is also more enjoyable the further you get into the game.
:3
it's nice
Flashing, Lights
This game has some of the most amazing atmosphere and animations. Really enjoyed it :)
In a way this feels like just an indonesian clone of Fatal frame but it has some really cool ideas that help separate it. I ended up enjoying it thoroughly, I hope the sequels are good too
I have a long history with this game. Its hard to believe that this came out 10 years ago at the time I'm doing this review. If you love atmospheric horror with Indonesian folklore and urban legends, than I definitely recommand DreadOut. I did a video review. Feel free to check it out

Good game, overall. Lots of creepy moments and cool enemies and discoveries. Lots to find off the main path, too.
The controls are a little janky, and some of the puzzles are extremely obtuse. Still, more good than bad about this game, even ten years later. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
uncanny

the game is too glitchy so i gave up 15 mins in
Day 22 of the October Horror Reviews: DreadOut
I've covered quite a few indie horrors, and I want to say that Digital Happiness made a reasonable ode to the Fatal Frame series with this game. From the start, you're presented with a helpless scenario where you must find your way out of a seemingly quiet, abandoned town. The thing that made Fatal Frame so potent as a horror series was that it rewarded a "shotgun" style of play from the player; the closer you get to the ghost, the more damage you do with the camera. Which meant basically in order to maximise your damage, you have to jumpscare yourself.
Similar enough, but still lacking a certain something. I feel as though this game explored the darkness of its setting quite well, but there was always a part of me that felt a little underwhelmed. As though it wasn't quite the game I was expecting it to be. Maybe it's because I'm wearing my Deja Vu brand rose-tinted goggles.
The characters in the game are reasonably amenable, you become engrossed in protecting your friends and finding your way through and eventually out of the town, but the game also hits you with tragedy after tragedy, and the bosses are intense and feel visceral and lively. I quite like the way the combat works here, and I like the little easter eggs that reference Fatal Frame.
The graphics remind me of an updated PS2-era FF, leaning more into PS3 times with the detail in some areas. The audio works to the advantage of the game, it builds tension reasonably well and overall, the story is pretty interesting, and it does feel like a desperate struggle.
I want to say that when we have a spiritual successor to something, it can go a couple of ways, and hit or miss. This was more an example of it being both. It was effective in some ways, but it was a bit of a letdown in others. The FF series feels like it's timeless, you can replay them and still feel unsettled and unnerved because they capture the player's fear pretty well: There were times during DreadOut where I genuinely was more frustrated with the game's puzzles and bad signposting than anything else and some of the ghosts felt more like an annoyance than something to be scared of.
Overall, a reasonable effort, and it's definitely worth a try: Just don't go in expecting anything lifechanging. 6.8/10
War schon absolut hammer damals kann ich nur empfehlen.
The ghosts are really well done and scary. There might be some bugs at times, but they're not a problem to handle. Overall, the game is great—from the story to the characters and the horror elements. I found many aspects of it to be really creative as well.
Definitely one of my favorites! <3
