Not to repeat a cliche, but I wish there was a middle option for reviews. I'm glad I played it, I loved the aesthetics, the art, and the folklore, but there's a twist that, in my opinion, makes the story take a kinda corny turn where I stop taking it seriously and start rolling my eyes a little bit. I prefer the beginning, when it feels more grounded and mysterious, and connected to actual folklore.
That said, it's super charming, I liked the puzzles, and I actually quite enjoy a game that makes me write down notes, so I recommend it. Not sure why I'm writing a review for a game from a decade ago, but whatever, have fun!
I had dozens of pens in my room that I haven't used in years because it's 2025 and who tf needs to write anything anymore.
Well, I look for a pen to use while playing, and none of them fucking worked. Not even unused pens fresh out the box. Why? Do pens fucking expire if not used? Do ball point pens have a "Best if used by" date or something? The answer is yes, apparently.
W/e. Found a mechanical pencil that got me through the game. This game is one of a kind; well written, cool puzzles, impactful visuals and music, genuinely creepy.
What a great game, the story gave me goosebumps. Absolutely worth playing on New Years Eve/New Year.
I wanted to wait specifically until New Year's Eve to play Year Walk and welcome in the new year as it seemed the most thematic time to delve into this game steeped in Norse myths and traditions. Overall, the game felt similar to a Rusty Lake game thematically and with some of the puzzles. Here's to 2025! 4/10
played this game for the first time in middle school when it first came out. It has had such an impact on my personal art style. Visually stunning and inspiring while still managing to creep me out all these years later. Happy new year

A short but sweet horror game, perfect for a comfy spooky playthrough done in one sitting
Definitely good music, no story, it is spooky. Navigating map is boring, you need to constantly check the map about where you are, you need to take notes/screenshots to remember stuff later on. Overall, I would not recommend to play it. Maybe it was good for 2014 but definitely not in the class for 2024.
I think if you're interested in folklore, puzzles, and a good short story, this game is great. I loved the encyclopedia with info on the supernatural beings, and enjoyed the journal entries you can unlock after the first playthrough, revealing much more of the story.
However, the game isn't very replayable. There's two endings and several very easy achievements; you can get all that done in like 3-4 playthroughs and it takes 20 minutes tops to complete a playthrough. After that, there's nothing else you can get out of the game.
My other complaint is the puzzles combined with how awkward the travelling/map is takes away from the suspense. The map is a bit weird to navigate and you need to take notes of all the runes in order to progress in a certain part. The spookiness and anticipation completely fizzled out for me as I wandered around feeling bored and confused trying to make sure I got every rune.
Overall, I would recommend it if you're into visual novels and folklore. I don't recommend it if you expect a game with a lot of engagement and hours of gameplay.
As a Swedish-American I appreciated this documentary of an ordinary winter's day.
That said, I could not have possibly picked a better game to play after Papo Y Yo, both because there are some lightly similar themes of childhood tragedy in both and because Year Walk falls into the "quick enough that you can just focus on enjoying the experience" side of casual games, though it also contains enough genuinely interesting and disturbing narrative and even lore (A+ to any game that has in-character journals!) to keep you thinking about it after you finish playing. And I have no doubt I will be thinking about this game on New Year's Eve this year.
